Loungers Overview

Loungers is an award-winning, all day restaurant/café/bar business that was established in 2002. It is led by Alex Reilley, Nick Collins, Jake Bishop and Justin Carter and is backed by Lion Capital Private Equity (www.lioncapital.com). The Loungers business comprises of 2 distinct roll-out brands, the Lounge café/bar concept and the Cosy Club bar and dining concept. Both brands are food-led and therefore both trade within Use Class A3.

Loungers has a current annual net turnover in excess of £90m and is regarded as one of the most exciting brands in the UK restaurant sector.

LOUNGES

Best described as being ‘like all the comfort of home but better...unless you have a bar in your lounge and a chef’, Lounges are a food-led neighbourhood café/bar business phenomenon that has grown rapidly from its Bristol beginnings to 80 Lounges as of March 2017.

Lounges are homely, relaxed and slightly eccentric and they offer quality, value-for-money, casual dining and drinking. As a result, they attract a diverse customer base including young professionals, mums, families, over 60s and students. The concept is informal, resulting in a rolling customer base where customers use ‘their Lounge’ to fulfill different needs at different times of the day.

Loungers have converted a variety of properties to Lounge café/bars including former banks and building societies, nightclubs, retail units and new developments.

Sites are typically located in busy secondary high streets in densely populated small towns, suburban areas of large cities and within mixed-use developments.

COSY CLUB

Cosy Club was developed by Loungers to fit into niche city centre opportunities and central market town locations. This concept has separate bar and dining areas, offers table service to diners and gives them the option to make reservations. The Cosy Club has a more premium food and drink offering, although the Loungers value-for-money ethos still prevails.

Cosy Clubs are typically located in period buildings or buildings of particular note and their interiors are eccentric, playful and unashamedly celebrate all-things Blighty; think 'gent’s club meets village hall meets cricket pavilion'. The concept first arose in Taunton in September 2010, where we redeveloped and refurbished a Grade II Listed former Victorian arts college.

Cosy Club sites have since opened in 16 more locations including Bath, Manchester, Cardiff and Liverpool among others. A further 5 sites have been secured for 2017 including York, Leeds, Worcester and Lincoln.

COCKTAILS

Raspberry/Blackberry Fizz 6.50Cartron Raspberry or Blackberry liqueur with raspberries or blackberries, topped with prosecco. Just darling.

Bourbon Shake (n) 7.25Yes, this is a milkshake. A milkshake that is laced with Jim Beam bourbon, Kraken spiced rum and topped with maple syrup and pecans. Delicious and very moreish, but certainly not for kids.

Mama Juana Punch 6.25Created by our very own Franco from Circo Lounge, this brings together tropical fruits, Ron Barceló rum and Spanish Garnacha wine to create a laid back mix of flamenco and the Caribbean that just works…

Mulberry Bramble 6.50/18.50 pitcher Boodles Mulberry Gin, smoked black tea liqueur and blackberries topped with cloudy apple juice and finished with cucumber and mint. Elegant, but approachable - if it was an animal it would probably be a Persian cat.

Mojito/Raspberry Mojito 7.25/7.50One of the most refreshing cocktails in the world and a definite classic as fresh limes, mint and crushed ice are lengthened with Ron Barceló rum – served with fresh raspberries and Cartron raspberry liqueur.

Cherry Bakewell 7.95/22.95 pitcherTake one Frobishers cherry juice and amaretto almond liqueur, gently mix with Ron Barceló Gran Añejo rum, add a drop of caramel syrup to sweeten, bake (or rather shake) and garnish with a cherry for the perfect Cherry Bakewell.

Martinique Margarita 6.50Smokey Cabrito Reposado tequila, with spiced Creole orange rum, lashings of lime and finished with candied orange. Sombrero meets hula skirt, get it on.

Baileys Chocolate Orange 7.25What do you get if you shake up Baileys liqueur, Crème de Cacao and Cointreau? Well, it’s basically a cross between a Christmas present and a chocolate pudding. What's not to like?

Bloody Mary 7.25The ultimate brunch tipple made with Tovaritch vodka, port, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and Frobishers tomato juice. How spicy would you like it?

Long Island Iced Tea 6.95/20.25 pitcherI say old chap, be a good fellow and mix me up a concoction of Tovaritch vodka, Rives gin, Cointreau, Ron Barceló Gran Platinum rum, Cazcabel Blanco tequila and top up with cola, there’s a good sport.

Espresso Martini 6.25A short sharp jolt to keep you going through those winter months. Kahlua, Tovaritch vodka and a double shot of espresso.

To Whom It May Concern

I write on behalf of Southbourne on Sea Business Association to advise that The Loungers Company took over an empty Woolworths premises in Southbourne High Street over three years ago. At that time the large former Woolworths site was a large void on our high street. Once they opened in June 2010 we have seen our high street with increased footfall and new independent businesses filling shops as they become vacant. We highly recommend The Loungers Company to become part of your High Street, they contribute much to the day time and night time economy creating an inviting, safe family environment. Family Café Culture is part of every day life and The Loungers provide this in a professional manner but in their own unique way. They do not attract the drinking culture that blights many high streets.

We were delighted that The Loungers chose Southbourne on Sea High Street to open the first venue in the Bournemouth area. They have since opened another three across the borough. We enjoy a good relationship with the Management and staff and they contribute much to both our business community and residents alike. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information.Kind regards

Every site also has a community board, and

hosts local activities and initiatives such as

a book swap scheme and local community

group meetings, as well as quiz nights and

fundraising events for local charities.

Reilley also takes a strong personal interest

in the interior design of each site alongside

an in-house build team that works to trans-

form units into an eclectic retro home from

home featuring quirky design touches rang-

ing from statement light fittings sourced from

decommissioned aircraft hangars, to 1940s

easy chairs, and bespoke mismatched chairs

and tables. The judges praised the business for its abil-

ity to trade strongly (company EBITDA stood

at £4.4m in the year to April 2014) in sec-

ondary locations that other operators might

overlook, as well as for its well organised, sys-

tematic approach that has made it one of the

fastest-growing casual dining businesses in

the country.

What the judges said

“Loungers has created one of the products that

is fit for its time – clever use of conversions from

retail, a product that is truly all-day and a value

proposition that appeals to its market. Then

it delivers it really well and grows it fast. Few

people combine all of the above. A real financial

success story.”Hamish Stoddart

“We think Alex Reilley stood out as an individual,

who was passionate about the Loungers concept

and has shown fantastic business growth from

humble beginnings. It shows how expanding can

be achieved through times of recession.”

James & Kate Mackenzie

Friends Alex Reilley, Jake Bishop and Dave

Reid founded Loungers in 2002. Since then,

the business, which started as one small

Bristol restaurant with just 10 tables, has

grown to nearly 50 sites across the country and

it shows few signs of slowing down.

Loungers, steered with seemingly bound-

less energy by managing director Alex Reilley,

has adopted a canny business model of open-

ing sites in densely populated suburbs and

secondary high streets, which enables them

to become hubs of the local community.

In fact, Reilley recently predicted that the

group’s Lounge format (currently at 40 sites)

could “easily” grow to 350, and more openings

are also planned for its premium Cosy Club

brand (currently at seven sites).

“A lot of the success we have had is because

we are not seen as a major player by our custom-

ers,” Reilley told The Caterer in a recent inter-

view. “That is going to be the biggest challenge

to us. We always say the facade of the business is

very cuddly. But if you peer behind the curtains

there is a very aggressive machine behind it.”

Each Lounge and Cosy Club is hard to

pigeonhole – while they retain aspects of what

could be described as a pub or bar they also

function as a café and restaurant, following an

all-day format that offers coffee from trained

baristas, alcohol, and food from a daily roll-

ing menu and ever-changing specials board.

“It is no coincidence that a lot of the estab-

lished casual-dining brands are desperately

trying to have a broader appeal, with a break-

fast offering. The likes of PizzaExpress, Zizzi,

Giraffe – they have all gone into that space.

Gone are the days when people stuck strictly

and rigidly to the lunch-dinner format,”

Reilley said in 2012. “I think that level of flex-

ibility and lack of structure with the Lounge

concept is part of its success. We have one

How I Made It: Alex Reilley, founder ofLoungers

We opened a cafe to lounge in — now we run 36 of them

ALEX REILLEY’Sbusiness planchanged the dayafter he wrote it.He vowed that hisbar business wouldnot serve food, butwhen he cameacross the perfectsite for his venture,it had a fittedkitchen.

“I was sick ofworking withchefs,” said Reilley,39, who had spentyears managingrestaurants andbars. “But wethought ‘why notgive it a go?’ Thebusiness might nothave succeeded inthe same way had we not put food on the menu. It was a perfect accident.”

In 2002, with his friends Jake Bishop and Dave Reid, he opened Loungers, a family-friendly cafe/bar inSouthville, an up-and-coming suburb of Bristol. It had 10 tables, which served food from 9am to 10pm. “Wemade almost double what we expected in the first week,” said Reilley.

The founders opened a site each year until 2006, targeting areas full of young professionals. Growth pickedup but they needed an outside injection of cash to expand.

8/14/13 How I Made It: Alex Reilley, founder of Loungers | The Sunday Times

Last April, Piper Private Equity put £16m into Loungers for a 43.5% share. Today the business, based in a

warehouse in Bristol, has 500 staff and 36 sites in southwest England and South Wales. Last year it had sales

of £22m and profits of £4m. It expects to report sales of £33m for the year ending next April and is on track

to open a further five outlets by December.

Reilley and his sister grew up in Leicester. His father ran a printing business and his mother was a

hairdresser. He attended New Parks Community College near the family home, where he met Bishop. “We

were very distracted young lads,” said Reilley, who failed his A-levels. “With Jake, I took a year out to prolong

reckless living.”

In 1993, the pair secured jobs at restaurants, with plans to save up and go travelling. Reilley worked at The

Case, a champagne bar in Leicester’s city centre. “I loved dealing with people and was looking at the business,

noting what I would do differently if it was mine,” he said.

After nine months, the friends had saved enough to go to Canada. They had been offered places at the

University of Northampton, however, and returned to give higher education a go.

The problem for Reilley was that he could not stay focused. “I was horrendously skint. Doing a Mickey Mouse

course that I wasn’t passionate about seemed stupid.” He and Bishop dropped out after five weeks to focus on

acquiring more experience in catering. “We had spoken about eventually starting something of our own,” said

Reilley. “Mum and dad weren’t pleased about it.”

Reilley went back to The Case on a management training course, but the urge to travel struck again after 18

months. He and Bishop spent the summer of 1996 in North America before they returned home jobless

although with itchy feet to start again somewhere else.

“Someone said Bristol was lively. We hopped on a train and got jobs within half an hour,” said Reilley. The

pair joined BYO, a company that operated four restaurants in Bristol. They worked at Hullabaloo, where they

met Reid, the area manager. “BYO was much more of a corporate structure,” said Reilley, who became

general manager before leaving in 1999.

He decided to try something different, joining the City Hotel Group in Bristol and running its restaurant and

bar. “I hated it but learnt a lot about myself. Your pager goes off and someone in room 21 wants something.

I dreaded going in to work.” He left after seven months to join Byzantium, a nearby restaurant, and was soon

managing the group, which operated four sites.

In 2002, a meeting with Reid, who had been travelling, led to a business partnership. “We really wanted to go

for it but Jake and I had well-paid jobs and saw it as too much of a risk. Dave said he would manage it while

we worked if we all invested,” said Reilley. The trio found vacant premises in Southville and put up £10,000

each and took out a £20,000 loan from Lloyds. “We wanted to open a place we would want to drink at.”

Today, half the sales are food.

By 2006 they were running five sites in Bristol and decided to expand. Two years later, Loungers opened in

Bath and Cardiff. “The potential was there to grow very quickly,” said Reilley. “Getting the right backers, who

want the same things as you, can be hard — but we did it.”

In November, Reid left Loungers and sold his 30% stake to his fellow founders. “He felt the time was right to

get off the Loungers bus and enjoy the rewards of the hard work he had put in.”
