From the Principal ... Dear Families, As this term comes to an end and we head towards two weeks of rest and recharge, I would like to thank our school community for the wonderful support they have given our school over the past 10 weeks. Our students and staff have had a very busy and rewarding term. Each of our students will have a different highlight, for some more than one, as so many interesting and exciting events, activities and learning took place over the past 10 weeks. Some of the standout events include: our Blue and Gold Athletics carnival, a very wet Barnes Cup, cricket and touch carnivals, the Ingham Junior Arts Festival, Mulkadee, Catholic Education Week, White Balloon Day, disco and Grade 5 school camp. I know that throughout this term our students have enjoyed a multitude of learning activities that have not only covered our curriculum but inspired them to learn and to be the very best they can be. This week we put the finishing touches on our new school logo! Many thanks to the very clever and creative Christine Stephensen for all of her work. Our new logo has an image of Our Lady and Bernadette to reflect the name of our school, the Mercy cross to reflect our Mercy heritage and charism as well as our motto… Faith …Mercy…Education…Hope Today we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy (actual date is in the holidays). We have chosen to acknowledge this feast day as Mercy Day at Lourdes in recognition of our founders, The Sisters of Mercy. Next term commences on Tuesday, 7 October - it too is action packed and eventful … school camps, swimming, gymnastics, Year 6 & Year 7 Farewells and hopefully lots of learning!! Before Ms Danielle Mastrippolito commences her maternity leave this Friday, I would like to thank for her commitment to her class and our school. We wish Danielle and Adrian our very best wishes and many blessings on the safe arrival of their baby and their wonderful journey into parenthood. Over the past weeks several members of our community have loved ones suffering illnesses - please keep these families in your prayers as they face these difficult times. Many thanks to our staff, students and parents who have given me so much support in my new role this term. I wish all an enjoyable, safe and relaxing break. Safe travels to any who are heading off over the next two weeks. Happy Holidays, see you in Term 4. Superpower Library Day this Friday!

This Friday, 19th September we will be celebrating our library theme “Reading gives us Superpowers”. Children are invited to wear their “Superpower” costumes to school on this day. It is important to remember that students will need to wear sun safe clothing and closed in shoes. During the day, students will participate in a range of reading and craft activities within their classrooms and we will have a shared

“Super Reading” time where all students will read simultaneously. We are looking forward to an exciting day!

IT IS ADVISABLE THAT CHILDREN BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES (T-SHIRT/SHORTS OR SCHOOL UNIFORM) IN A PLASTIC BAG TO CHANGE INTO BEFORE LUNCHTIME.

JOGGERS AND SOCKS TOO!

White Balloon Day – Thursday, 11 September

This year’s White Balloon Day was a great success! All children participated and had great fun. We started our celebrations with a wonderful liturgy performed by year 6. Our school was also introduced to our new Adopt-A-Cop, Constable Kirsty Jervis who was assisted by Constable Paul King. Constable Kirsty gave the students of Lourdes and St Peter’s great tips to stay safe. We also had a very special visit from Ditto who reminded us of his very special rules to keep ourselves and others safe. We then concluded the afternoon with a wide range of activities such as biscuit making, loom bands, pass the footy, diamond cricket, face painting and many more. Students generously brought in a gold coin to support the Bravehearts Foundation. Altogether we raised $340 which is a fabulous effort that will go a long way to supporting the work of Bravehearts. A big thank you must go to all of the teachers, staff and students for organising such a great day for us.

Last Friday, the Year One students spent the morning immersed in Aboriginal culture and art. Students listened to

"Buddy" Cassady, a visitor from Mungalla Station, who came to play the didgeridoo, as well recount a traditional

story of how the didgeridoo came to be. He also organised the boys and girl into different animal groups and

taught us a Corroboree dance. His didgeridoo playing skills were fantastic and he even did some beat boxing using

the didgeridoo! The students also participated in arts and craft, then shared in a lunch cooked by Ms Robyn

Smallwood’s family, who woke in the early hours of this morning to prepare a traditional Kup-murrii. It was delicious!

We thank Ms Robyn and her family for their hard work in cooking the delicious vegetables, meats and damper …

the kids loved it!

Year 2PC NEWS Year 2PC NEWS –– Term 3 Wrap UpTerm 3 Wrap Up Students in Year 2PC have been very busy this term and have participated and competed in a

variety of events including sports carnivals (Blue and Gold Athletics' Carnival and Barnes Cup) and

presentations from various guest speakers. Mrs. Nancy Mills (Wildlife Carer) and Miss Felicity

Vigh spoke to us about protecting turtles and showed us pictures of turtle nests and hatchlings.

We also enjoyed visits from the NET Team and Father Cipriano who spoke to us about Migrants

and about God’s Love in preparation for us to receive Reconciliation next term.

Students have also participated in outdoor sports and activities with the Year 11 Gilroy students

and have enjoyed this immensely. When ‘Ditto’ from Bravehearts visited our school, students

heard very important messages about how to keep safe. White Balloon Day activities reinforced

this message and students were asked to choose five adults they trust to write on their “safety

hand”. These are people they can go to, if they need help or feel unsafe. Our class enjoyed the

range of fun activities to celebrate White Balloon Day. Many thanks to Mrs. Quabba for organising

this fun, and very important, day.

Students participated in the Ingham Arts Festival competition by reciting two poems.

Students performed exceptionally well and placed 1st in their 2/3 part poem, “Little

Abigail and the Beautiful Pony” and 2nd in their unison poem, ‘Uncle Dave’s Car’.

CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 2PC!

In Science this term, students in Year 2 have investigated mealworms, watching them grow and

change into different life stages while testing if temperature effects their development. Students

were excited to see how the mealworms (larvae) that were kept in

the classroom, grew, shed their skin a number of times before

pupating and then finally emerging as adult Darkling Beetles. There

was a container of mealworms kept in the first aid fridge to see if

temperature effected their development - it did, as none of these

mealworms changed. Luckily they were kept in sealed containers so

none would escape and end up in Miss Rita’s and Mrs. Menegon’s

lunches!

Students have had a busy time in the garden too and have thoroughly enjoyed their produce,

picking cherry tomatoes, strawberries, lemonades, bananas, paw-paws and mulberries. They are

tending to and eagerly await produce from their baby peas, watermelons and purple carrots they

grew from seed earlier on this term. Finally, students have been studying about endangered

animals in English and are currently writing and completing their information reports on their

chosen endangered animal. They will present their research and information using chrome

presentations early next term.

Gymnastics in Term 4

Do you have any old books you don’t need???

Dr Charly Muke, a teacher at Abergowrie College, is collecting books to send to the Jiwake Province in Papua New Guinea to enable 10 rural schools in the province to set up their first ever school library. These schools have no reading books and students do not have any access to books at home. Please drop any books you no longer need into the Lourdes School office—we will be collecting for the WHOLE YEAR, in the hope that we can fill a shipping container by Christmas! Please help!

In weeks one to three of Term 4, all students will be involved in gymnastics lessons at the Showground Pavillion with qualified coaches from the Ingham Gymnastics Club. The students will walk to and from the Showgrounds, accompanied by either their class teacher or PE teacher. Year 6 and 7 students will need to wear their sports uniform on Mondays and Prep to 5 classes should wear it on their normal PE day (Tuesday or Wednesday). Girls should also wear blue shorts/bike pants. All students will need a water bottle and school hat. It is not necessary to obtain signed permission from you, as all parents signed a General Excursion Permission Form (as they are walking) as part of the enrolment process. If you have any concerns, please contact the office or class teacher.

TELSTRA THANKS IS GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE KATY

PERRY VISIT OUR SCHOOL! Katy Perry is coming to Australia on her Prismatic World Tour this November and December. While she’s here, she’d like to meet students from one of Australia’s most inspiring schools. So Katy and Telstra are asking us to create a video demonstrating what makes our school special, unique and inspirational. Katy will then visit the winning school herself! They will also provide the winning school with a $10,000 grant for their performing arts department. Two runner up schools will each receive a $5,000 grant. Entries will be judged on their creativity. The senior students and Mrs Bourke have come up with some unique lyrics about our school and Mr Robin Bugden, our IT guru, has composed the music. He has set up a recording studio in the music room and Carly, Annieka and Rachel are recording the song today!!! We have been busy collecting video footage (at the disco and here at school) to go with our song. We are all very excited! Stay tuned on Facebook to see our movie soon and be sure to like and share it!! Mrs Melissa Inunciaga
