PASTOR DANP O F F E n B E r G E r

Halloween, Saints, lutefisk, elections & loveI am writing this article on October 31, deadlines being what they are for production, printing and assembly (thanks to the faithful group that comes together every month to assemble the Trinity Today by hand – the prettiest and spunkiest group at Trinity). Yes, that makes today Halloween. Tomorrow, November 1 is the Lutefisk & Meatball Dinner, Sunday is All Saints’ Day and next week is election day. Usually, I try to contribute something to the newsletter that will be happening just as the newsletter arrives, but today, I am focused on these four major events that are in the near future.

Halloween activity is happening as I write. Living in our small neighborhood, with the youngest neighborhood “child” being in college, and our “boys” in their 20s, it is a quiet night. But today, in our offices, there was a parade of children from Lake Area Discovery Center (LADC) that came by in their costumes – princesses, firefighters, puppies, dragons, superheroes (male and female); they were all there and all smiles. LADC is a wonderful partner with Trinity, as together we offer preschool for almost 100 children and their families. It fills this building with happiness (mostly) every Monday through Friday, and is a wonderful faith-based experience with highly-qualified instructors and a great group of parents. I am so proud that we partner with LADC; they are a wonderful, hard-working, faithful

team. We are blessed in every way by their partnership.

All Saints’ Day is celebrated this Sunday. Carol Carver, Phil Kadidlo, the Worship Planning team, and the Fine Arts team do a wonderful job every year of providing us with a holy and special day to remember and give thanks for the saints that have filled our lives. This year will feature a time of candle-lighting and personal reflection that I am looking forward to. Sometimes my life moves too fast, and there is not enough time to center myself to reflect on all of the wonderful people who have inspired me, modeled faith for me and loved me really well. There is so much in life to be grateful for, but most of the significant blessings in my life have come in flesh and blood. You and I now stand in the line of saints, and it is our turn to be saints for those we touch every day. What a privilege that is; what an opportunity to live into. Join me in prayer that you and I might place ourselves in service to those God has given us as family, friend and neighbor.

Lutefisk happens tomorrow. All week, there has been a gathering storm of baking, meatball rolling, coleslaw making, lefse frying, table-setting and lutefisk cooking. Legions of guests come to buy tickets, volunteers bring their creations and donate their time, muscle and good humor to the effort. To be honest, it totally blows me away. What a wonderful

heritage we celebrate! But the best part is to watch all of the generations of Trinity coming together to serve side-by-side. The food may be great, but the community that is cooked up at Lutefisk is the best! Thanks to all who make it happen!

The election will be over (I hope) when you read this. Whoever wins and loses, it is a wonderful country we live in. Freedom to express oneself, freedom to demonstrate, to vote and to worship freely is a treasure. From time to time, excessive partisanship is distressing, and we need to remember we are all in this together. It is important to remember to think well of those we disagree with, and to realize that it is, finally, only politics. No one said it would be easy. After the lawn signs go down, let’s all get together over the backyard fence and work on being the best neighbors we can be, and let our faith talk through our actions. No matter our party, or our votes, we are followers of Jesus; let our unity shine through, and the Spirit move us all to a great witness of love as we “love our neighbors as ourselves.”

I hope this all reads well in hindsight – have a great Thanksgiving!

MISSIONM i n i S t r i E S

Tom ThietsDirector of Missions

MISSIONupdates

Over the years I have been asked a lot of questions about Trinity’s mission efforts both locally and globally. Along with the questions about the number of homes built, meals served, or how many school backpacks filled, the question that comes up most often is “How many people have participated in Trinity mission projects over the years?”

My honest answer is “I really don’t know.”

I explain that it’s not a numbers thing here at Trinity. It’s about serving others while living out our faith. Since all are welcome, we have members and non-members that have participated.

I can estimate a rough number of roofs completed in Mexico, or take a stab at the number of folks that have been fed a good meal here in Stillwater or St. Paul, but with the variety of ministries happening here over the years I really don’t have exact totals. That seems to satisfy most of the questions except the one about how many people have participated.

I, too, would like to know who has been involved, not for the number, but for the stories about how each person’s experience affected their faith. The stories of reconnecting to the emotions of the experiences, to the teams and to the community where they served are amazing.

Six months ago a small group of people approached me with a desire to help connect past mission team members. Along with their desire, they brought the energy and commitment to develop a method to reconnect across the decades and a new group was formed: the Trinity Mission Alumni Association (TMAA).

The TMAA was formed to gather mission participants from all Trinity mission ministries, both domestic and global, to celebrate and share the joy of their service. While the when, where, and how we served may vary, the common thread of serving Christ bonds us together.

The TMAA desires to give voice to the multitude of faith-filled stories shaped over several decades of service. Your stories, wisdom and enthusiasm are vital to encouraging and empowering future generations to live out their faith in Jesus Christ through a lifestyle of service.

At worship services on Sunday,

November 18 we are inviting everyone who has participated in a Trinity missions experience to apply and join the Trinity Mission Alumni Association, so we can connect and share your mission story.

TMAA members will be on-hand after the service (wearing their new TMAA blue polo shirts) to answer questions.

You can also apply online at www.trinitylc.org. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Missions Alumni Association” on the left, listed under “Missions & Service.”

Please consider joining the association and helping us reconnect with your team members whether they live near or far around the world.

Blessings,

Tom Thiets

LIVES

Grateful

The Characteristics of Vibrant Stewards, on the opposite page, illustrate that life with God includes healthy stewardship of all God has given. This month as we each prepare our individual 2013 Giving Plan, we delve into our sixth characteristic:

Vibrant Stewards embrace financial health as an expression of faith. We allow money to flow to and through our lives in ways that nourish us and our world. We recognize our capacity to give is defined by our heart, not our pocketbook.

Personal finances can be a touchy subject, and I feel it’s important to say upfront that there is no judgment intended in this article. We are each in different places financially for different reasons. Many among us are struggling financially, and the causes may be the result of our own decisions or due to a misfortune over which we had no control. Others among us have more than sufficient financial resources and greater than that, wealth.

Money, and even wealth, is not in itself bad, no more than food is bad. The biblical prophets rail against the rich, not specifically because they are rich, but because they are rich and oblivious. The rich man in Jesus’ parable in Luke 16: 19-31 is doomed to eternal torment because he was luxuriously rich and completely oblivious to the destitute Lazarus lying just outside. One wonders how things would have turned out if just one of those at the rich man’s feast had called his attention to the poor man at the gate.

Over the past several years, I have been fortunate to work in a community foundation. Through extensive study of foundations (private, community and corporate) I have come to understand and appreciate the great things that have been and are being accomplished when people use their wealth for the good

of all. I have seen countless real-life examples of “allow(ing) money to flow to and through our lives in ways that nourish us and our world.” The challenge for us, as imperfect humans, is to maintain a balanced relationship with money wherever we are on the spectrum.

God calls us to be disciples as whole people, all the time, engaged in all aspects of life on earth. And in this day and age, life on earth involves money. Our personal financial health is an important dimension of our overall “faith-health.” To put our finances in order, we have to order our life and priorities as well. “As I look into financial issues, the more I realize it is about more than math. In fact, I’ve been surprised how often the emotional and spiritual components of a financial decision outweigh the mathematical.” (A quote from Craig Ford, a former missionary who shares thoughts on debt-free living, frugality, generous giving and simple living.)

Personal financial health is best achieved in the same way as personal physical health: develop good daily habits and have an annual check-up. Good habits

include basics like preparing a budget so we live within our means; that we save, give, and pay debts on time, and continue to learn about financial issues.

Our annual financial check-up includes making a personal balance sheet. Record all the details of personal assets: bank accounts, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, cars and furnishings. Record all the details of personal liabilities: credit card debt, mortgage, student loan debt. Does the ratio of debt-to-assets indicate that we are living within our means? Review property and life insurance coverage to ensure that it is accurate and adequate. Have we developed the discipline of saving for emergencies as well as saving for retirement? At any stage in our life, we should have a will and/or estate plan that provides for any dependents and distributes our assets in a positive manner.

What if our financial health isn’t good? Fortunately, there are many resources to help us get on track:

FamilyMeans in Stillwater provides confidential tools and education so families can regain financial stability and reduce unmanageable debt through

Our personal financial health matters. Being financially healthy frees us to live a productive and joyful life in service to God. We are stewards, on behalf of God, of all that we have and all that we are. Stewardship is not a program – it is a way of life!

September and October financial reportsThe September 2012 financial results are posted on the Trinity website and the October financials will follow soon. Our $86,000 increase in operating deficit (through October), as compared to October 2011, is attributable to four primary factors. First, we are $20,000 behind last year in income. About half of this is from ministry program fees and payments and half from facility rental. Our contributions are about flat compared to last year through October. We were running behind, but we had an increase in giving this summer and early fall. Second, our personnel expenses are higher due to filling the pastoral care position that was vacant the first half of 2011. Third, our finance, facilities and operations expenses are higher because of some leftover expenses from the old post office that were not anticipated in our budget. Last, certain Children, Youth and Family expenses are higher due to timing issues and increased participation.

Contribution income is the only way we have to overcome these deficits since most of our expenses are committed earlier in the year. We need a strong finish to 2012 as we did in 2011. Please do your best to meet or exceed your pledge amounts. Your Giving Plan is very important to us to predict income and plan accurately for our 2013 budget. We would be grateful to receive your 2013 Giving Plan the weekend of November 17 & 18.

If you have not already done so, please complete and mail or bring your 2013 Giving Plan to Trinity. Giving Plans and automated giving can be completed online at www.trinitylc.org as well.

Thank you for your generosity and for helping Trinity plan for ministry in 2013.

Creative Practices: Connecting to God through Creative Expression

Remember, there are many ways of connecting to God…

When multiple friends and family members received ugly and scary diagnoses, Sybil MacBeth found herself exhausted by the words of her prayers and stymied by a lack of focus. One summer day, she retreated to her back porch for a session of mindless doodling with a basket of her favorite colored markers. She drew a shape, put the name of a friend inside, and added lines and color. She drew another shape with another name and added detail and color. When the page was covered with designs and names, Sybil realized she had prayed. The action of drawing was a wordless offering of friends and family into the care of God. The page of drawings became a visual reminder to pray. This was the beginning of Praying in Color.

Praying in Color = prayer + d o o d l i n g

Here’s what you need to get started:1. Paper2. Pen3. Colored markers or colored pencils

or colored gel pens4. A table or clipboard or book for

your paper.

On the left is an example of an Advent Calendar by Connie Denninger

Here’s how to get started:1. Write your name for God on a

piece of paper. Draw a shape around it or just start to doodle. The drawing becomes a prayer space, a small prayer closet.

2. Add marks and shapes. Focus on the name you chose. Ask God to be part of your

prayer time with or without words. If words come, pray them; if not, enjoy the silence.

Here are some reasons to Pray in Color:1. You want to pray but words escape you. 2. Sitting still and staying focused in prayer are a challenge. 3. Your body wants to be part of your prayer. 4. You want to just hang out with God but don’t know how. 5. Listening to God feels like an

impossible task . 6. Your mind wanders and your body complains.

7. You want a visual, concrete way to

pray. 8. You need a new way to pray.

CONFIRMATION

update

jr.high* ministry

The new format of this year’s confirmation experience offers junior high students unique and fresh ways to grow in faith and understand our Christian identity. One of the most exciting additions to the experience is a monthly worship service for all students in grades 7-9. This month’s worship theme centered on stewardship. Students were encouraged to consider how their gifts and strengths might be used in response to a need they see in our community. As an expression of offering, our young adults brought perishable food items to be donated to local food shelves.

Angel Tree 2012in Narthex Sun., nov. 25

Angel Tree connects parents in prison with their children through Christmas gifts provided by the Trinity community, and given in the parent’s name. Trinity receives information on 45 children and the team then contacts the children’s caregivers for gift requests.

This year Trinity is partnering with Bethlehem Lutheran in St. Paul where gifts will be distributed to families at a party at the church a week before Christmas. Each child receives two gifts, clothing and a toy, each valued at about $20. You are invited to take a tag, purchase a gift for the child on the tag and bring the gifts to Trinity by Sun., Dec. 9. Donations may also be made toward $20 gift cards for the caregivers and party expenses.

Watch for the Angel tags on the tree Nov. 25!
