isers, Grandstand Events, spend
most of the year putting together
a diverse mix of traders for this
spectacular three-day event. This
will be their 19th year of staging
the Christmas Shopping Fayre at

Fun-run for a good claus
Chase the elf
charity event
THIS year, North Devon Hospice
has launched a festive fun-run
with a twist.
Runners taking part in the 10-
mile event will be chasing an elf
along the route, with a prize avail-
able for each person who finishes
ahead of the playful character.
Chase The Elf takes place on
Sunday, December 14 and will
see runners run, walk, skip or hop
along the course through the
Tarka Trail from Bideford to Barn-
staple Football Club.
Emma Lowe from North
Devon Hospices fundraising
team said: We think this is a
great seasonal twist on a clas-
sic 10-mile event because its
always more fun to have a tar-
get in front of you.
Our anonymous elf is a bit
like The Stig of the running
world. Hes very competitive
and wont like getting beaten,
so it will be even more sat-
isfying for runners when they
catch him and claim their prize
at the end.
With lots of long straights on
the route, runners will often
catch a glimpse of our elfs
bright red hat and stripy leg-
gings, but whether theyll be
able to catch him or not is an-
other matter!
Simon Haywood from North
Devon Road Runners, who are
helping to organise the event,
said: We love this idea because it
is a lot more fun than a standard
race.
Were really happy to be help-
ing out with this event, not only
because its a great laugh but also
because all the money raised
goes to North Devon Hospice.
The care they provide to local
people is amazing and well do all
we can to make this a success for
them.
Themain Chase The Elf event is
for those aged 18 and over, but
there will be a shorter Tinsel Run
for youngsters involving a 3km
route around Barnstaple, starting
and finishing at the football club.
Emma added: Itll be a great
way to get into the Christmas
spirit so we hope to see lots of
people there.
This year is the hospices
30th anniversary and it would
be amazing if the runners taking
part could raise 30 sponsor-
ship to help us celebrate.

FROM wreath making to carol
singing, Arlington Court has some
seasonal delights planned this
Christmas.
A beautiful knitted Christmas
tree will be on display at Arlington
Court this year, with each section
knitted by numerous volunteers of
the All2Knit group. The tree was
created in 2005 and took nine
months; this will be the highlight
of the decorations in the staircase
hall.
Visitors can listen to and join in
with festive Christmas carols at
Arlington on three dates this
winter, on Friday, November 29
with the Northam Chorale Society
from 12pm to 1.40pm, Sunday,
December 7 with the South
Molton Town Band from 3.15pm
to 4.30pm and Saturday,
December 13 with the Victorian
Arlington servants at 12pm and
2pm.
Ana Chylak, general manager
at Arlington Court, said: The
Chorale Society gave a concert
at our Christmas fair last year,
which sounded fantastic.
This year theyll be returning
to the house and will give the
concert from the gallery.
The knitted tree will reduce
the amount of space available
in the staircase hall so there will
be no seating available. In-
stead, listeners will be able to
walk around the house in the
festive ambiance which should
lead to more people being able
to hear the singers.
Staff and volunteers at Arling-
ton Court are busy decking the
halls this winter for a memorable
Christmas. Every weekend from
Saturday, November 29 to
Sunday, December 21 the
house, carriage museum and
groundswill be open for visitors to
enjoy the festive decorations.
Spectacular decorations in-
clude blue, silver and white
themes in the grand long room
and crafts in the explorer room,
which families can do together
and take home. The sculptures in
the grounds will be dressed for
the season, too!
In the tea room the cosy log
burner will be lit to warm chilled
fingers and toes, together with
festive treats including mulled
wine and homemade mince pies.
Arlington Court will also be wel-
coming a very special guest this
year, as Father Christmas will pop
by to meet the children. On
December 13, 14, 20 and 21,
Father Christmas will be visiting
from 12pm to 3pm. All children
will receive a gift. The cost is 4
per child and normal admission
charges apply for adults.
The magical grounds will be
transformed for a VictorianChrist-
mas on Saturday, December 13.
Meet the Victorian servants in the
house and be greeted by the but-
ler before seeing the cook sorting
menus for the festive season. Dis-
cover the gifts servants would
have given to each other and even
make something to take home. In
the beautiful gardens there will be
information on which plants are
used to decorate the house, in-
cluding a demonstration by a
gardener.
This is a unique event not to be
missed.
Workshops at Arlington Court:
Make an advent calendar Saturday, November 22.
12pm- 4pm. 1 per calendar.
Wreath making workshop Saturday, December 6
and Sunday, December 7. 10am or 1.30pm. 12 per
person, booking essential.

MAGNIFICENT decorated trees
will adorn St Mary Magdalenes
parish church this Christmas.
Whether its shuttlecocks for
the badminton club or sweets for
the local sweet shop, each tree
will represent the various groups
in South Molton.
The South Molton Business
Association (SMBA) said: Each
tree is a work of art in itself, but
when they come together in the
church they create a magical
Christmas experience.
The exhibitionwill be open each
day from Thursday, December 4
toMonday, December 8 from 10
am to 4pm. On Friday this will be
until 5pm. Last year 65 trees ex-
hibited representing groups in-
cluding schools, businesses and
activities organisations. More
than 2,000 visitors flocked to the
event which grows each year.
Margaret White, a volunteer
for the Christmas Tree Festival,
said: This will be our fourth
year of running the Christmas
Tree Festival and its always a
delight to see somany beautiful
and originally decorated trees
displayed throughout the
church. It is also a lovely way of
uniting the South Molton com-
munity at this very special time
of year.

Fatstock Show promises
delicious food, carols
and demonstrations
Choir to hold Welcome to
Christmas concert
SOUTH Moltons annual Fatstock
Show will be celebrating its sixth
year this Christmas with a wool
theme and a performance from
The Military Wives Choir.
On Sunday, December 7
between 10am and 4pm, the Fat-
stock Show will demonstrate how
wool is produced, starting the
journey with sheep shearing
demonstrations, hand clipping,
hand powered and the modern
day electric systems.
The organisers of the show
said: Sheep and thewool trade
first brought wealth into the
SouthMolton district during the
17th century and indeed the
towns emblem still incorpor-
ates a ram at its heart.
Even today there are more
sheep per acre in this area than
anywhere else in the world. So
what could be more appropri-
ate than having wool as the
theme of this years Christmas
Fatstock Show.
Devon and Cornwall Wool will
also be present, explaining the
Wool Boards role in both pro-
duction and marketing.
As always, the event is firmly
rooted in traditional agriculture.
As such, the day includes illus-
trations of the production of meat,
from judging the live pens of
sheep and bullocks to an auction
later in the day.
There will also be rare poultry
breeds, a cart horse and Exmoor
ponies, pigs and alpacas to meet
at the show.
From 10.30am to 3pm, the
stage will be filled with demon-
strations and entertainment, in-
cluding South Molton Choral
Society and children from Bray-
ford School singing seasonal car-
ols.
Food plays a huge role in the
event, whether youd like to
sample or buy produce. There will
also be hot drinks and snacks
available from the South Molton
Market Canteen girls.
For those seeking a delicious
Christmas meal, a full carvery will
be served in The Assembly
Rooms by local farming sisters
Garfields Girls. Amouth-watering
range of meats will be supplied by
local butcher John May, including
beef, lamb, venison and pork
rolls.
Of course there will be plenty of
stalls offering Christmas-themed
goods throughout the day.
For those who want to be cre-
ative or competitive, there is a
scarecrow competition.
Chivenors Miltary Wives will be
performing at the show and a bar
will be open courtesy of The Bell
Inn, Chittlehampton and refresh-
ments provided by the events
chosen charity, North Devon Hos-
pice.
Tickets for the event will be 10
(adults), 3 (children) or 20 (fam-
ily tickets with two adults and two
children) available from Print-
workx, Stags Auctioneers, John
Walker Insurance and John May
Family Butchers.
Local farmer Morley Heal, an
organiser of the show, said: We
areparticularly pleasedwith the
way the Fatstock Show is sup-
ported by so many people, both
visitors who now come from all
over the South West and ex-
hibitors.
It is wonderful to welcome
The Military Wives Choir this
year and we hope that this will
be a great success.
Last year we raised more
than 3,300 for charity through
the raffle and auction.
This year we hope to exceed
this with all proceeds going to
North Devon Hospice.
FESTIVE music will ring through
the elegant Assembly Rooms this
year, when the South Molton Cir-
cuit Choir hosts their Welcome To
Christmas concert.
For a night of carols and songs
including South Molton Junior
Schools Choir, this concert will be
a heart-warming way to start the
winter season.
Mike Courtney, a founding
member of South Molton Circuit
Choir, said: This will be the first
year that we have joined South
Moltons Big Christmas Festival
event.
We are greatly looking forward
to being part of this successful
weekend which brings thousands
of folk to town to celebrate this
important time of year.
All proceeds from the concert
will be going towards South
Molton Community Hospitals
League of Friends, which is cur-
rently fighting proposals to close
the hospital.
The Welcome To Christmas
concert will take place at 7pm on
Saturday, December 6.
Ticket prices include a buffet.
6 (adults) and under 16s go free.

Characters from Frozen
and a party on the quay
A HUGE party in Bideford will start the towns
festivities this year, with a reindeer, live music and
stilt walkers.
Darren Sparrey and Amy Beer of the Bideford
Christmas Committee have organised the event,
which will see the Christmas lights illuminated on
Sunday, November 30.
Starting at 12pm, Hopps andChapple will kick off
Bidefords Christmas Tidings.
Following a hugely successful run last year,
Childrens Hospice South Wests Santa Run will be
returning to Bideford. This starts on Bideford Quay
at 3pm.
There will be childrens fairground rides, ma-
gicians, stilt walkers and a visit from the characters
of Disneys Frozen. Anna, Elsa and Olaf will be
meeting the crowd from 1pm to 5pm, saying hello
and posing for photos.
Of course, they will be joined by Sven and his
friends from the Cairngorm Reindeer herd later in
the afternoon. This promises to be a truly magical
event.
Bidefords spectacular Christmas lights will be
switched on at 5pm, followed by a Reindeer parade
through the town at 5.30pm and a magnificent
fireworks display at 6.30pm.
Bidefords Christmas Wish, organisers of the
event, said: We are delighted to announce that this
years Bideford Christmas Lights will be switched
on by Imogen Smale.
Imogen lives in Bideford with her mum, Emma,
dad, Mark and her little sister, Evie.
Imogen is three-years-old and was born with an
undiagnosed genetic condition which has resulted
in her suffering with extreme epilepsy and multiple
other difficulties.
Mum, Emma, says she is a very happy, sociable
little girl who loves lots of attention, cuddles and
musical activities.
Please join Imogen on Bideford Quay at 5pm on
Sunday, November 30 to begin the countdown to
Christmas.
Throughout the day, there will be festive music from
St Marys School Choir, Bideford Town Band, Bideford
Youth Pipe Band, Steve Ley, Oscar Young and various
other artists.
Bidefords Christmas Tidings is sponsored by DS
Electrical.
The Business of Bideford (BOB) will be producing a
delightful window display throughout the town on the
theme Every Window Tells A Story.
Ready for the light switch on, each shop will choose
a childrens story book to theme their windowdisplays,
including Jack And The Beanstalk and Mother
Goose.

with reindeer and gifts
FESTIVE food, gifts and Father
Christmas will be heading to Tor-
rington for the Nostalgic Christ-
mas Fayre on Sunday,

Great Torrington Chamber of
Commerce.
