Cannons roared from across the shimmering crimson eld that lay before

him, each blast briey masking the screams of the dying and those who have

taken their lives from them. Looking out to the horizon he could see the

disorganized formations of men and beasts alike, as they embraced their

deaths in full force and with open arms. The shouts and commands around

him seemed mued as the words skated along his consciousness while heremained consumed in the perpetual carnage as though the soldiers were

actors in a tragically morbid play set on stage before him for his amusement.

!n the distance, rapid moving gures caught his attention, his eyes lazily

following them as they charged down the eld like an arrow curving along a

gust of wind. The creatures swept around those locked in combat, ignoring

everything but their goal.

" commanding voice boomed out behind him, #$n your guard% The wolves

have &oined the fray%#

#'olves# he echoed softly, momentarily brought back into reality. (e focused

in on the large pack as it moved into a wedge formation. "s the wolves arced

around the battleeld they made for their target, picking up their pace and

speeding closer with each passing second.

#To the air%#, the voice behind him bellowed, and immediately a strong burst

of wind shoved him forward as he stumbled to keep his balance.

" new but familiar voice began #)uickly your...# the man was cut o* as a loud

cannon blast red near by. #+ou must take to the sky#. ingers gripped his

arm as he was turned around to face the man.

#-ahdrick# (e muttered, still stuck in limbo between reality and the

performance of gore that played out all around him.

#+ou arent safe here# -ahdrick shouted, shaking him by the shoulders, trying

to bring him to his senses and to face the immediate threat placed before

them. #They are almost on us, you must go# -ahdrick pleaded.



#/eline# The man choked the named out as though his throat was bogged

down with grief.

#0lease sir, come with me# -ahdrick insisted, not hearing or caring to delve

into the sub&ect of this woman.

#!1C$-!12%# "n unknown voice screamed as -ahdrick took to the air with

hands still grasping him, taking him several feet o* the ground with great

strain when the cannon ball struck the earth they stood upon. Their grip

broke immediately and sent both of them ying back toward the ground. "

loud crack tore through the air as -ahdrick landed on his wing, unbalanced

by the e3plosion and desperation to save his superior. The impact left

-ahdrick with nothing in his lungs to articulate his pain and laid on the earth

curled in a ball gasping for air.

lat on his back he gazed into the sky, oblivious to his friends su*ering,

oblivious to the battle around him or his own in&uries. #/eline# (e whispered

to the clouds, ears ringing, body unresponsive. (is eyes grew heavy as

e3plosions fell around him. (e could feel the vibration of synchronized strides

beat against the ground in the distance. Tilting his head to the side, cheek

lying on the cool earth, his eyes searched the distance between the legs and

gap along the human soldiers defending their dwindling brigade. (e could

see the wolves closing in 4uickly, though before they hit their mark, another

pack tore in front of them and merged into the front of the wedge. These

beasts were heavily armored and were going to break through the lines with

ease. Turning back to the sky he gazed up at the moon and a sense of guilt,

desire and longing ached within him.

The clash of steel and thuds of bodies slamming to the ground signaled the

breach of the front lines. (owls, snarls, tearing of esh and the smell of blood

lled his senses with dread. 'ithin his mind a mental battle waged as he

thought about all he would be leaving behind him with his coming death. Tears would be shed by his new friends he had made, though his family would

shed no tears, for there was no family left to mourn for him. There were

complicated feelings for /eline, #'ould you feel pain at my passing# (e said

to himself with a sigh, #Could you feel pain5# his heart clenched as the words

crossed his lips.



#'e all feel pain# a feminine voice responded, followed by a gure standing

before him, blocking the sun from his eyes as it towered over him #!ts how

you manage the pain that matters. There is too much at stake to give into

emotion# the womans voice grew 4uieter as she spoke. " shrill grinding,

scraping sound emanated from her hip as the sun caught the polished metal

of a long thin blade. /he held the sword at her side and shook her headslowly from side to side, staring down at his helpless form. #+ou dont have to

hurt any longer, ! will relieve you of your heavy burden# she promised him

before carefully sliding the blade through his chest and pinning him to the

earth. #2ood night my prince# the woman whispered, the sunlight embracing

her face and revealing a wide grin before all of the light in his world faded to

darkness.

#Theres always a small patch of clouds, a bright white against a deep

blue sky. ! remember spending entire days staring up at the sky, believing my

world was perfect, and it certainly felt so. Tran4uility and happiness seemed

to radiate from the very earth ! rested on. 0eace was my e3istence, it was our

knowing war and chaos. This is where the mystery of 2eneaph began. 'here

a calm and contentedness swelled within every citizen of 8ncorvey9 2eneaph

drowned in turmoil, violence, and waste. :angerous creatures, inhabit

2eneaph and we are taught throughout school that it is a prime e3ample oflearning from your mistakes. There is hardly a day that you cannot see the

disharmony of 2eneaph from your front door, as lights burn bright and icker

o* throughout the distant fractured continents scattered along its surface.

There is much to fear, but perhaps the most frightening is also the most

familiar. !t has been rumored that the humans will have established the

strongest foothold on the planet since the creator planted the seed of life and

with it came its rst sentient creatures. The creatures adapted 4uickly, but

none as fast as the humans. The balance of the planet 4uickly spiraled out of

control and drove the weak to the shadows, and creator to seclusion. The

humans grew too fast, too smart for their own good and soon plunged

themselves into the dark ages, &oining those that they cast aside, leaving

themselves at the mercy of the starving and enraged. !f they are regaining

dominance, this will be my most reckless decision, but it is the only choice !

am left with.

Tomorrow is my only chance to reach 2eneaph. They could never nd me

Two vampiric lovers sit atop a cli*, their legs gently swaying in unison as they

entwine their ngers with one another and bask in the rich moonlight that

holds them together in its embrace. They gaze up into the darkness, their

eyes gliding from one constellation to the ne3t. 2iddy with the feeling of new

love, he leans over to kiss her, and for one moment it is as if the emptiness of

their cold hearts has been lled.

" streak of light races across the night sky and they watch e3citedly as itpasses over them. Their gaze follows the star until it disappears into the rst

signs of a sunset on the horizon. They rise to their feet, hands still clasped

together, and head home to retire for the morning9 memories of the night

swimming through their minds as they vanish into the shadows.
