Rhythm & Blues is a term used to describe the blues-influenced form of music predominantly performed by African-Americans since the late 1930s. The term 'Rhythm and Blues' was first introduced into the American lexicon in the late 1940s.

The upbeat popular music performed by African American artists was a combination of both Jazz and the Blues. Over time the name was shortened to R&B as a matter of convenience.

R&B/Hip-Hop

Page 4: Love in the Media

Hip-hop has always been about making something out of little or nothing. Few knew that that something would become the biggest pop music innovation since rock and roll in the 1950s.

Hip-hop was born in New York City in the mid-1970s as a vehicle for inner-city youth to throw parties on their blocks and at area clubs, and for them to make money as DJs and promoters. Early hip-hop was largely a "throw-your-hands-in-the-air" music, however, hip-hop remained largely ignored outside of New York City's ghettoes until 1979.

Now a billion-dollar industry, hip-hop has become the voice of young people on the planet breaking down racial, ethnic, gender, class, language and regional barriers. Hip-hop is manifest everywhere, pushing the sales of entities as different as high profile designers and soft drinks, and turning rappers like Will Smith and LL Cool J into box-office stars. Like rock and roll in the 1950s, hip-hop has become the great cultural bridge in these times.

Music is very influential and symbolizes different feelings for everyone.

Some people may listen to music just because they are bored or they like the beat; others listen to it for the lyrics and the expression the artist is trying to send out.

Musicians write, sing, or rap about what they have been threw as a child, how they were raised, struggles they had to overcome, society problems, and what they see and hear throughout their lives. They are sending a message to those who can relate in certain situations.

Music appeals to everyone and can be an escape for people.

Many songwriters express raw emotion in their music, especially when writing about failed relationships or unrequited romances. Exposure to such lyrics can be difficult for someone going through a trying time in his life.

Just gonna stand there and watch me burnBut that's alright because I like the way it hurtsJust gonna stand there and hear me cryBut that's alright because I love the way you lie, I love the way you lie, I love the way you lie

I can't tell you what it really isI can only tell you what it feels likeAnd right now it's a still night in my wind pipeI can't breathe but I still fight while can fightAs long as the wrong feels right it's like I'm in flightHigh off the law, drunk from my hate,It's like I'm huffing paint and I love it the more I suffer, I suffocateAnd right before I'm about to drown, she resuscitates meShe hates me and I love it.Wait! Where you going? I'm leaving youNo you ain't. Come back we're running right back. Here we go againIt's so insane cuz when its going good its going great.I'm superman with the wind at his backShe’s Lois Lane but when its bad its awful, I feel so ashamed I snapWho's that dude? I don't even know his nameI laid hands on him, I'll never stoop so low againI guess I don't know my own strength

You ever love somebody so much you can barely breatheWhen you're with 'emYou meet and neither one of you even know what hit 'emGot that warm fuzzy feelingYeah, them those chills you used to get 'emNow you're getting sick of looking at himYou swore you'd never hit him; never do nothing to hurt himNow you're in each other's face spewing venom in your words when you spit themYou push pull each other's hair, scratch claw hit himThrow him down pin himSo lost in the moments when you're in themIt's a race that's the culprit controls your boatSo they say you're best to go your separate waysGuess if they don't know you cuz today that was yesterdayYesterday is over it's a different daySound like broken records playing over but you promised herNext time you show restraintYou don't get another chanceLife is no Nintendo gameBut you lied againNow you get to watch her leave out the windowI guess that's why they call it window pane

Now I know he said things hit things that we didn't meanAnd we fall back into the same patterns same routineBut your temper's just as bad as mine isYou're the same as meBut when it comes to love you're just as blindedBaby, please come backIt wasn't you, baby it was meMaybe our relationship wasn't as crazy as it seemedMaybe that's what happens when a tornado meets a volcanoAll I know is I love you too much to walk away thoughCome inside, pick up your bags off the sidewalkDon't you hear sincerity in my voice when I talkI told you this is my faultLook me in the eye ballNext time I'm pissed, I lay my fist at the drywallNext time. There won't be no next timeI apologize even though I know its liesI'm tired of the games I just want her backI know I'm a liarIf she ever tries to leave againIm'a tie her to the bed and set this house on fire

Love the Way you Lie-Eminem Ft. Rihanna

“Love the Way You Lie” is about a physically and mentally abusive relationship that many women can relate to.

Abuse can be physical, emotional, or sexual.

Physical abuse means any form of violence such as hitting, punching, pulling hair, and kicking.

Emotional abuse can be difficult to recognize because it doesn't leave any visible scars. Threats, intimidation, putdowns, and betrayal are all forms of emotional abuse that can be harmful.

The first step in getting out of an abusive relationship is to realize that you have the right to be treated with respect and not be physically or emotionally harmed by another person.

Now after all of this time that we triedI found out we were living a lieThat after all of this love that we madeI found out you don't love me the same

The way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love you

I woke up kinda early todayAnd something told me from that momentIt wouldn't be the sameI knew you were hiding somethingBut I didn't push itI didn't know what to sayI tried to pretend, like I didn't see it'Cause deep down I knew I didn't want to believe it

There it was, it was you and herYou left your sidekick on the nightstandAnd I read

Everything you did, and everything you said andAnd now I'm standing here looking like damn..I thought it was you and INow I all I got to say is why'

After all of this time that we triedI found out we were living a lieAnd after all of this love that we madeI found out you don't love me the same

The way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love you

I notice now, that when your aroundYou be trying to lock the doorWhispering on the phoneNow wait a minute since we been in this houseYou ain't never did this beforeTell me what's this about'

I tried to sit and say to myselfThis here is too good he don't want nothing elseThere it was, it was you and herYou left your credit card receipt inside the beamer babe

Everything you bought her, and everything you spendingNow I'm standing here once againI thought it was you and INow all I have to say is why'

After all of this time that we triedI found out we were living a lieAnd after all of this love that we madeI found out you don't love me the same

The way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love youThe way that I love you

Sitting here feeling kinda crazyBut not just any crazyIt's the kind you feel when you love somebodyAnd I dont doubt that my babyIs calling somebody else babyAnd I can't sit stillLook how gone it got me

Who knew that my heart could ever bruiseYou see this scar here on my chestI'm hurting and he don't even care

It's 4 AM and my lover won't answerHe's probably somewhere with a dancerSippin' champagne while I'm in his bed

It's 4 AM and I think I might lose itThis motha thinking I'm stupidHe must have bumped his headDon't he know it's 4 AM

Standing here and I'm getting heatedPour me up a drink I swear I need itI think I'ma aboutAbout to hurt somebodySwear this man is begging me to leave himGetting sick of being so mistreatedAnother night withoutWithout his arms around meWho knew that my heart could ever bruiseYou see this scar here on my chestI'm hurting and he don't even care

It's 4 AM and my lover won't answerHe's probably somewhere with a dancerSippin' champagne while I'm in his bed

It's 4 AM and I think I might lose itThis motha thinking I'm stupidHe must have bumped his headDon't he know it's 4 AM

Who knew that my heart could ever bruiseYou see this scar here on my chestI'm hurting and he don't even care

It's 4 AM and my lover won't answerHe's probably somewhere with a dancerSippin' champagne while I'm in his bed

I wish I could believe you then I'll be alrightBut now everything you told me really don't applyTo the way I feel insideLoving you was easy once upon a timeBut now my suspicions of you have multipliedAnd it's all because you lied

I only give you a hard time'Cause I can't go on and pretend likeI haven't tried to forget thisBut I'm much too full of resentment

I may never understand whyI'm doing the best that I can and II tried and I tried to forget thisI'm much too full of resentment

I may never understand whyI'm doing the best that I can and II tried and I tried to forget thisI'm much too full of resentment

I'll always remember feeling like I was no goodLike I couldn't do it for you like your mistress couldAnd it's all because you lied

Loved you more than everMore than my own lifeThe best part of me I gave youIt was sacrificedAnd it's all because you lied

I only give you a hard time'Cause I can't go on and pretend likeI tried and I tried to forget thisBut I'm too damn full of resentment

Resentment-Beyonce

Page 13: Love in the Media

“The Way that I Love You,” “4 A.M.,” & “Resentment” are all songs about cheating.

Infidelity is becoming more common among people under 30.  Many experts believe this increase in cheating is due to greater opportunity (time spent away from a spouse) and young people developing the habit of having multiple sexual partners before they get married.

Songs such as these are portraying the message to society that infidelity should be expected in relationships.

Infidelity

Page 14: Love in the Media

She's staring at me, I'm sitting wondering what she's thinkingNobody's talking, cause' talking just turns into screaming And now as I'm yelling over her, she yelling over me,all that that means is neither of us are listening, and what's even worse, that we don't even remember why we're fighting

So both of us are mad for nothing (fighting for)nothing, (crying for)nothing, (oohh)

When we won't let it go for nothing, (come back for)nothing,it should be nothingto a love like what we got oh baby

I know sometimes it's gonna rain,But baby can we make up nowcause' I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)girl I don't want to go to bed, mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at meno I don't want to go to bed mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at me (oh noo)

And it gets me upset girl when you're constantly accusing(asking questions like you already know)we're fighting this war, but baby both of us are losing(this ain't the way that love is supposed to go, what happened to working it out?)We fall into this place where you ain't backing down, and I ain't backing down,so what the hell do we do now?

So both of us are mad for nothing (fighting for)nothing, (crying for)nothing... (oohh)

When we won't let it go for nothing, nothing,it should be nothingto a love like what we got oh baby

I know sometimes it's gonna rain,But baby can we make up nowcause' I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)girl I don't want to go to bed mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at meno I don't want to go to bed mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at me (oh noo)

Oh baby this love ain't gone be perfect, (perfect perfect oh no)And just how good it's gonna beWe can fuss and we can fight long as everything is alright between us before we go to sleep...

Baby we're gonna be happy...

I know sometimes it's gonna rain,But baby can we make up nowcause' I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)girl I don't want to go to bed mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at meno I don't want to go to bed mad at youand I don't want you to go to bed, mad at me

Mad-Neyo

Page 15: Love in the Media

“Mad” is about a couple who are constantly arguing and fighting.

In many cases couples say things and do things that would not be acceptable with anyone else. These things can destroy a relationship.

Fighting makes anger habitual and yelling a standard practice. When people fight, they use their energy for recrimination and abuse, rather than real communication that could strengthen the ties between themselves.

Fighting & Communication

Page 16: Love in the Media

These songs are examples of unhealthy relationships that people are involved in everyday and does not portray a realistic view of love and healthy partnerships.

The songs portray passionate love rather than companionate love.

Abuse, cheating, fighting, and lack of communication are all negative influences and can destroy a relationship instead of strengthening it.

Media & Relationships

Page 17: Love in the Media

Couples need to be aware of outside influences from the media since they can have a negative impact on relationships.

Relying on the media definitions of love can make people think that infidelity, abuse, and fighting are the norm in relationships and that they are to be expected.

For a healthy relationship couples must build a foundation based on respect, trust, common goals, and communication.

Occasionally it is healthy to set aside time to check in with each other on changing expectations and goals. If a couple ignores difficult topics for too long, their relationship is likely to drift without noticing.
