Overview for Parents: While adults are learning about the nine personality types of the Enneagram as a tool to show how we’re uniquely made to experience life-giving relationships with God and others, the children will be learning something similar: there are nine ways that people show love for God and for others.

Over the next nine weeks, you will read some similar stories to your preschool-age children that you will be reading for the What’s Your Number? series. The elementary age kids will be reading about the same Biblical figures and some of the similar passages as the adults.

We encourage you to also watch the fun teaching videos that will be posted each week for the children on the church website. Use this link to see them as well as other materials provided by the Children’s Ministry Team to help enhance the lessons: www.andersonhills.org/cfm-online

We hope that this series will help you and your children to see that God uniquely designed each of us for His purposes and will equip you to better love others.

Week #1 Choose Right! June 1-5

This week read these three stories in The Beginner’s Bible with your child and use them to explain that making good choices, the kind God wants us to make, not only helps us but also other people. Jesus shared the story about a father who had two sons, one who made good choices and one who did not. We should celebrate when someone we love changes their wrong choice into a right one! We also show love for God and others by doing the right thing, like Josiah and Daniel. Everyone benefited from Josiah’s good choices to repair the temple and to obey God’s law. Daniel’s good choice helped others to honor and respect God. Ask your child about how his/her choices will show others that they love them. Be sure to watch the teaching video this week on the church website!

Week #9 Peace Be With You! July 27-31

Recommended version of the Bible to read:

New Living Translation (NLT) God calls us to live in peace with others, which means we are to avoid fighting and arguing. Abraham knew that God did not want people to fight, so he worked out a solution with his nephew Lot about the land. He let Lot take the best of it! Esau and Jacob had a big fight and separated for many years. In the end they forgave each other and made peace! Helping to create and keep peace with others is a way to show love.

Week #8 I’ll Lead the Way! July 20-24

Recommended version of the Bible to read: New Living Translation (NLT)

Another way to show love is by leading others and protecting them. David offered to take the lead and fight Goliath. He wasn’t afraid to stand up against the giant in order to protect the people from their enemies. John the Baptist was not afraid to tell people to stop making bad choices, and lead the way for Jesus to start His mission. All of these people were leaders who did hard things out of love for God and others.

What did John the Baptist preach? Has God given you boldness like John to tell people the truth? Day 3 - Read 1 Timothy 4:12. In what ways can you set an example to other believers as a young leader? Week #2 I Will Help You! June 8-12

This week read these three stories with your child and use them to talk about how helping others is a great way to show that we love them, and that God loves them, too. The friends of the paralyzed man helped him by getting him to Jesus to be healed. Jesus told the story about the good Samaritan to show how we are to love our neighbors. The Samaritan helped the hurt man when others wouldn’t. Martha had a big heart and wanted to help make Jesus’ visit to their home really special by cooking and cleaning which was nice, but that day Jesus wanted her to sit, rest and listen, like Mary. The video on the church website will expand on this topic. This week, help your child find ways to help others, sharing Jesus’ love with them.

Week #3 I’ll Get It Done! June 15-19

This week read these three stories with your child to teach them that another way to show love for others is by working hard and getting things done that make a positive difference for them. God asked Moses to do a big job for Him and with God’s help, Moses ended up rescuing the Israelites from being slaves in Egypt. Joshua led the army around the walls of Jericho and was able to take over the whole city! And Samson ended up using his strength from God to get an important mission completed. He defeated the Philistines and saved the Israelites from their enemy. Invite your child to help you plan and accomplish a task that will show God’s love to others. And take time to watch the video on the church website to hear a different story about this topic, and check out the activities, too.

Week #4 Be Creative! June 22-26

This week read these three stories with your child and talk about what it means to use our creativity to show love for God and love others. David used his creative gift of music and writing to praise and worship God, and to teach others how much God loves them. We still use his songs, called psalms, in worship and prayer today! Making something as a gift for others is another way to use creativity to love people. The couple who became friends with Elisha created a room for him to use when he visited them! Encourage your child to use his/her creativity this week to make something that show love of God and love for others. Go to the church website to watch this week’s video story and get ideas.

Week #5 Check It Out! June 29-July 3

This week read the these three stories with your child and discuss how taking time to explore and/or check things out before acting is wise, and shows you care about someone. Moses sent out 12 spies to check out the land that God had promised to give them. He wanted to know what it was like so they could be prepared before going in— that showed love and care for others! Gideon asked God twice for a sign to be sure he heard God right. Zacchaeus heard about Jesus and decided to climb a tree to observe Him when He came to town. Share with your child times when you “checked things out” before acting to keep them safe. Watch the video about Nicodemus on the church website this week with your child.

One of the fruits of the Spirit is joy. When we take joy in God and others, we are living the way God wants us to! The shepherds rejoiced after they saw the angels and baby Jesus, and they shared their joy with others. Joy is contagious. When we laugh, others usually join in! It is an act of love to help cheer people up.
