We asked specialist bathroom designer, Penny Schoeman for her Top 10 Tips for creating your perfect bathroom.

Penny has loved beautiful interiors for as long as she can remember. It was after renovating her first home then building a home in Sydney that she realised she wanted to be a part of the building industry. After working in new home sales, Penny spent several years working for a boutique building company where she learned all aspects of residential building from an experienced Master Builder and was encouraged to grow her passion and talent for interior design.

After completing her Diploma in Interior Design, a role with a bathroom renovations company in Perth ignited Penny’s passion for bathrooms. She now works with Oliveri and also designs bathrooms for home owners who wish to DIY with the help of skilled tradespeople and quality products.

1Your bathroom

is your sanctuary. Decide on a style you love that will complement your home, then stick to it – whether it’s

Hamptons, traditional, industrial, modern or classic. Research your style and collect pictures to keep

you on track.

2Consider wall-hung vanities and toilets to create a feeling of

spaciousness. Wall-hung vanities free up a little extra

floor room to store small items. A semi-recessed basin in

a narrow vanity is another great way to save space in

a small bathroom.

3Match tapware colours to

your wastes and accessories for a more cohesive look. If you decide on black tapware, choose

the same finish throughout.

4If you prefer a more masculine

feel in your bathroom, go with square or chunky tapware and accessories. Alternatively, softer, curved shapes create a more feminine atmosphere.

Matching the shape of the tapware to your bath and

basin gives continuity.

5The placement of your shower

mixer and accessories may seem like a small thing, but can cause frustration. Place your shower

mixer close to the entry of the shower so you don’t get wet whilst waiting for the water to

warm up. Keep the towel rail close to the shower door so it’s easy to access when you’re dripping wet.

6Create a hero piece in your bathroom –

a whole wall of amazing Italian tiles, a beautiful vanity or perhaps

a gorgeous mirror. It’s a great way to give the room a focal

point; tying all the design elements together and setting

the overall tone.

7Every home should have at least one bath. Not just for practicality, if you have young

children or for relaxation at the end of a long day, but a bath transforms

a bathroom. Remember, it is important to sit in the bath before purchase. Baths can vary greatly and if you love bath time, you’ll

want to be comfortable.

8There’s nothing quite like a

beautiful freestanding bath against a big window to create a sense of luxury.

However, you will need space for this feature to work

and enough room to clean all the way around it.

9Know your budget and stick to it.

Bathrooms can be costly! Choose quality, affordably priced products, backed by a good warranty. Get

quotes for labour before you start and only use licensed tradespeople. Ask friends and family for personal

recommendations on tilers, plumbers, electricians, and plasterers.

10Finally, don’t forget storage, storage, storage! Consider adding in a mirrored cabinet

above the vanity for extra toiletries and items used daily. You won’t

regret adding a shelf or wall cut-out in the shower; you’ll have

more space for shampoo and conditioner bottles, rather than

leaving them on the floor.
