There are more ways than ever to care for your skin: cleansers, serums, moisturizers, noninvasive cosmetic procedures, over-the-counter products, as seen on TV gadgets. Everywhere you turn there is a way to tight- en, tone and lift. We have you covered for what works, what’s trending and what our well-seasoned writers have discovered for keeping your skin its healthiest. FIRST UP: EXFOLIATE Mature skin tends to be drier, and skin turnover starts to dwindle, which means the cells don’t slough off as frequently or as easily, leaving many of us with a sort of dull, colorless facade. Exfoliating is the answer, and there are two ways to go. Mechanical exfoliation is the time-honored method of scrubbing the skin to release those dead cells with a terry washcloth, a Clarisonic gizmo, or a cleanser packed with scrub- by granules. This provides your makeup routine with a smooth canvas, not a rough road. 1 NextTribe.com The Voice of Smart, Bold Women 45 - 65+ Like. Love. Share. Comment. Welcome! 2SKIN LOTION YOU’LL LOOOOVE FOR CREPEY SKIN It happened during downward dog. I looked down and the flesh on my arms and legs suddenly decided to hang loose, and not in a good way.

While it seemed to be an all-at-once occurrence, surely decades of sun worship had something do with it.

Naturally, I went into crepe-y skin damage control, even watching a mind-numbing infomercial for an in-sanely pricey “miracle” cream. I came to my senses and assumed I’d just have to live with looking like a lizard.

Then, at a routine visit, my dermatolo-gist recommended ammonium lactate 12%. She wrote me an Rx (though it’s available OTC, too; the leading brand name is AmLactin), and for 15 bucks I got the best damn body lotion ever!

The lactic acid, an alpha-hydoroxy, is neutralized with ammonium hydroxide to blah-blah-blah-science… I don’t fully follow but I do know for me, it

works! Well, to an extent. It didn’t cure the crepes completely, but now, in one of the coldest, driest winters in recent memory — my skin looks noticeably less reptilian than before.

A little goes a long way: One dimesized dollop for my upper half, another for my lower.

...my arms and legs suddenly decided to hang loose, and not

in a good way.

THE OIL BOOM: A SECRET TO SMOOTHER SKINI took some time to get on board withthis skin oil trend, but I have to admitthat the Tin Man was onto something.

For years, I was afraid to use oils onmy skin, especially my face, thinking(wrongly) that they would make megreasy, slimy, and possibly pimply. Now, I live for oils, slathering onproducts balanced with multiplewellness benefits, a veritable A to Zingredient list from Argan to ZeaMays (corn) oils.

My body loves me for it. My skin looksand feels smoother, less lined, andglow-ier. Oils have become myfountain of youth as my aging skinproduces less natural lubrication.

While I’ve found that coconut oil is fine as a daily go-to, I’ve becomedevoted to Angela Shore’s divineoils from her lovely Jiva-Apoha (or“soul-healing”) collection. Not onlydoes her Sundara face oil make mefeel (dare I say, look?) younger, but itsmells delightful, imbued with rose, lavender, chamomile and jasmine, among other essential oils.

At $110 for a 15ml bottle, it certainlyisn’t inexpensive, but it’s made withthe highest quality ingredients, minimizes and fights lines, improvesskin tone and texture, and you onlyneed a tiny bit at a time.

4CELEBRATING HEALTHY AGING WITH CLEAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS What’s not to love about this missionstatement from two organic skincarecosmetic execs who recently launched their own company: “Instead of fighting aging or antiaging, we embrace healthy aging—even celebrate it.”

These are the words of Lynne Florioand Renee Tavoularis who launchedtheir business Well Within—a beauty and wellness company—this past spring after working together for 20+ years at the super-luxe La Prairie.

They founded a collection of skincare products that are organic and then some (free from toxic insecticides, her-bicides, fungicides and fertilizers, par-abens, petroleum, sulfates, phthalates and more), environmentally responsi-ble and enhance beauty inside and out.

Working with pure, toxin- and chemi-cal-free ingredi-ents, they blend ingredients like pomegranate

extract, beech tree bud extract,

lotus flower and green

algae into products that help bright-en and firm skin. What we love most, though, is just the ethos of celebrating ourselves at midlife and beyond. What a gift to see organic skincare products that don’t talk about “erasing” the years or “correcting” lines but about protecting delicate skin and nourishing the senses.

Skin cancer rates continue to rise, and

medical professionals advise using at least

SPF 50, reapplying every two hours.

5THE BEST SUNSCREEN: THIS ONE WILL REALLY HAVE YOU COVERED Think back to your teenage summers.Remember slathering on baby oil, grabbing one of those silver reflectivegizmos, and lying on a beach, by a pool, or pretty much anywhere unshaded in pursuit of the perfect tan? Your older and wiser self knows that was not the smartest strategy, but you may think an SPF 30 cream is the best sunscreen you can use right now. Nope!

Skin cancer rates continue to rise, and medical professionals advise using at least SPF 50, reapplying every two hours you’re out in the sun. Since sunscreens are an in-exact science – Did you really reach all of your back? Did you sweat some off? – some der-matologists are rec-ommending you go even higher.

For instance, Joshua Zeichner, MD, who’s Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Derma-tology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, recently said, “A recent study of sunscreen with SPF 100+ compared to SPF 50 on the ski slopes of Colorado showed SPF 100+ gave significantly better protection against the sun.”

To take care of your skin and your- self, look for a stratospherically high SPF. We like Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 100+ for less than $10 a tube.
