Dear Members,

Greetings and Jai Shree Krishna to all the members of the Leuva Patidar Samaj. Ihope everybody has been able to enjoy this summer filled with many weddingsand gaam conventions. The past few months have seen various events not only inour community, but also nationally and internationally. I would like to wisheverybody a very happy Raksha Bandhan. Even though this tradition was startedin India, we have continued celebrating it abroad. On August 15th, Indiacelebrated 61 years of independence. As we remember the struggle and strifethat our ancestors endured, let us appreciate and respect the political processthat many of us will be a part of in November here in the US. I encourage all ofyou to participate in your local communities as well as following the Congressionaland National Election later this year.During the summer, the LPS Board and I have been busy visiting you acrossAmerica. We have had the honor to attend a regional meeting in Lexington, KY,a Tri-State Regional in Memphis, TN, and a regional meeting in Houston, TX.Moreover the picnic in Florida has raised the enthusiasm of all Leuvas. All thosewho attended the picnic mentioned how memorable it was. The tremendous effortsof volunteers and local support have brought our lifetime membership number tomore than 1001 members! Our upcoming meetings are scheduled to be inBirmingham, AL, Richmond, VA, Tulsa, OK, Louisiana and Oregon. I look forwardto visiting the Leuva Communities in these areas and learning what we can do tomake our Samaj stronger.During the next few weeks, LPS members will be receiving their family's useridentities and passwords. One login and password will be provided per family. This login is to be used on our website, www.leuvapatidarsamaj.com wheremembers will be able to edit their family information and demographics. As Ihave mentioned earlier, I would like to promote the use of our Samaj website toencourage communication between you and the Board, as well as to keep membersupdated about future events. I would also like to call your attention to the LeuvaAchievers section of the website. This section contains information on how todonate to the scholarship fund, how to apply for the scholarship and the by-lawsof the scholarship program. The recent news from our home country have been shocking. More than 50innocent people lost their lives and another 100 injured in the serial bomb blastsin Ahmedabad in July. Surat was fortunate to have escaped the terror attemptthanks to efficent police action that disabled dozens of bombs around the city.We extend our sincere condolences to the family members of those affected bythis ghastly and inhuman act.We are in the process of planning a LPS Youth Summit that will be targetedtowards our Leuva Youth in the age range of 13 years through 19 years. Tentatively, the Summit has been planned for early next year in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg,TN area. In the coming weeks, we will be updating you with the progress of theevent. Stay tuned to the website for the finalization of the plans for the Summitand registration for participation. If you have any questions or suggestions, pleaseemail us at [email protected] again, I hope everyone has had a great summer. As we go into the Fall, there are many auspicious events we have to look forward to such as Navratri,Diwali and the New Year. The LPS Board and I wish you the very best during theseoccasions and we look forward to serving you.

OUR LEUVA Community has been on the run, literally, all through the summer heat, juggling family businesses, kids, attending weddings, gaam conventions, family vacations and dedicating time and efforts towards makinglocal events successful. And what’s awesome, is that we have done it gracefully with happy, smiling faces! If

you’re looking for a reason for this joie de vivre (the joy of living), the answer lies in our very own LPS Mission Statement.

The objective of the LPS of USA, a non-profit organization, is to foster an environment that enhances unity and provides aplatform for generations to preserve our community’s religion, culture and heritage through fellowship, education andcommunication.

This page is dedicated to the Cincinnati, Ohio and vicinity area Leuvas who worked tirelessly (along with other Hinducommunities) prior to and during the preparation for revered saint Morari Bapu's Ram Katha. Our members woke up in thewee hours of the morning to prepare for the daily food. Kids rolled out of bed early during summer break to help serve thefood as Leuva mothers prepared hot rotlis for the faithful. It was an effort marked by the participaton of members across allages and it was their bit to help preserve our religion, culture, and heritage. Thank you, Tristate Leuvas.

I RECENTLY bought a cooking oil thatis new to our supermarkets, CanolaOil. I tried it because the label assuredme it was lowest in 'bad' fats. However, when I had used half thebottle, I concluded that the label toldme surprisingly little else and I startedto wonder: where does canola oilcome from?

Olive oil comes from olives, peanutoil from peanuts, sunflower oil fromsunflowers; but what is a canola? Therewas nothing on the label to enlightenme which I thought was odd. So, I didsome investigating on the Internet. There are plenty of official Canola siteslauding this new 'wonder' oil with allits low-fat health benefits. It takes alittle longer to find sites that tell theless palatable details.

Here are just a few facts everyoneshould know before buying anythingcontaining canola. Canola is not thename of a natural plant but a made-upword, from the words ‘Canada’ and‘oil’. Canola is a geneticallyengineered plant developed in Canadafrom the Rapeseed Plant, which is partof the mustard family of plants.

According to Agri Alternatives, anonline innovation and technologymagazine for farmers, ‘By nature, theserapeseed oils, which have long beenused to produce oils for industrialpurposes, are toxic to humans and otheranimals’.

Rapeseed oil is poisonous to livingthings and is an excellent insectrepellent. I have been using it (in verydiluted form, as per instructions) to killthe aphids on my roses for the last twoyears. It works very well: it suffocatesthem. Ask for it at your nursery.Rapeseed is an oil that is used as alubricant, fuel, soap and syntheticrubber base and as a illuminate forcolor pages in magazines.

It is an industrial oil. It is not a food.Rapeseed oil, it seems, causesemphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability, andblindness in animals and humans. Theoil was widely used in animal feeds inEngland and Europe between 1986 and1991, before it was discontinued.

alarming number of processed foods.Did you know that the rapeseed oilwas the source of the chemical warfareagent mustard gas, which was bannedafter blistering the lungs and skins ofhundred of thousands of soldiers andcivilians during World War I? RecentFrench reports indicate that it wasagain in use during the Gulf War.

Here’s what you can do to look outfor this health hazard: check productsfor ingredients. If the label says, ‘maycontain the following’ and lists canolaoil, you know it contains canola oilbecause it is the cheapest oil and theCanadian government subsidizes it toindustries involved in food processing.

Contrary to popular opinion, Canola oil is a health hazard, says this artcile compiled by Darleen Bradley...

• Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is arare fatal degenerative diseasecaused by a build up of long-chainfatty acids (c22 to c28) whichdestroys the myelin (protectivesheath) of the nerves. Canola oil is avery long chain fatty acid oil (c22).

genetically engineered rapeseed andmanufacturers use its oil (canola) inthousands of processed foods, with theblessings of Canadian and USgovernment watchdog agencies. Thecanola supporting websites say thatcanola is safe to use. They admit it wasdeveloped from the rapeseed, but insistthat through genetic engineering it isno longer rapeseed, but 'canola'instead.

The new name provides perfectcover for commercial interests wantingto make millions. Look at theingredients list on labels. Apparentlypeanut oil is being replaced withrapeseed oil. You will find it in an

Ganpatbhai Patel, son of Dayabhai Bhikabhai Patel hailingfrom gaam Tundi of Surat District found his abode in Brahm-lok on July 18, 2008. Born on December 14, 1936 to DayabhaiBhikabhai Patel and Revaben Bhikhabhai Patel, Ganpatbhaistarted his career as teacher in a secondary school in India. Here he married a loving, beautiful woman Gulabben, daugh-ter of Bhulabhai Vanmailibha Patel and Gangaben BhulabhaiPatel of Sevni. He got an opportunity to move England in 1961and spent 16 hard-working years there.

Moving to the US in 1977, Ganpatbhai jumped into the mo-tel industry. He was considered a very successful hotelier whobrought about many reforms in this area.

Ganpatbhai was not just a successful businessman. Hehelped lot of needy people and became mentor to those inneed. He rendered selfless services for the cause of religion byvolunteering in many social organizations. He was foundingmember of Ambika Bhajan Mandal, India club of Central Coastand many other religious organizations. His passion for deepcommitment to humanity has left an indelible impression onall who knew him.

We salute Ganpatbhai, caring husband of Gulabben; proudfather of Praful and Mukesh; affectionate father-in-law of San-gita Praful Patel and Mukta Mukesh Patel; and loving grandfa-ther of Neil, Neelam, Bhavesh and Shivani.

Ganpatbhai’s mortal body was cremated on July 22 at theDudley Hoffman Mortuary, Santa Maria California. His asheswill be scattered in a holy river in his home country India.

We pray to God to rest his soul in peace.

The soul is indestructible, it cannot be burnt or made wetor dried. It is immutable, all pervading, all permeating, ever

calm and unmovable, eternally the same.

We are shocked at the unexpected news of passing awayof Satejbhai Lallubhai Patel at an early age of 45 years. Hebelonged to the village Afva, of Surat District and lived inHuntsville, AL. He was a great leader and a selfless, dedicat-ed member of the Leuva Patidar Samaj. It is difficult to fillthe vacuum created by his sad, unexpected demise. But wehave to accept this rude reality as we are helpless at the handsof God. We express our heartfelt sympathy and convey condo-lences to members of his family to bear this irreparable loss. His funeral services were held on Thursday June 12 at theBerry Hill Funeral, 2305 Memorial Pkwy, Huntsville, AL.

SEPT 2008

Although many of us out therefancy ourselves as warm, loving, and competent fathers,

we are sometimes the problem in ourrelationship with our kids. This may bedifficult to hear, but if you make thissecret the cornerstone of who you areas a father, you'll increase yourchances for success and effectivenesswith your kids. Deny that this is evera problem, and you'll continue tocreate problems without yourknowledge of it. Sounds complicated? It's not, just read on.

It's incredibly easy to get to a placeof judging your children harshly andblaming them for problems in yourfamily. If you're married, you may alsoget to the same place with your wife.

Fathers can easily see themselvesas hard-working dads who care abouttheir family and do all of the 'right'things for them. You may have a hardtime seeing your own contribution toany problems your family has.

But there is an important reason whyyou are the problem - and it's a conceptthat can be used in any relationship inyour life. In any relationship that you'rein, the other person really knows howyou feel about them! Words don't haveto be spoken here. Your loved ones havean intuitive sense about your feelingsfor them, and they're usually quiteaccurate.

When you're not feeling good aboutyour son or daughter, when you'refeeling they are embarrassing you oraren't living up to 'your standards,'you're letting them know in some waythat they're failing.

When they pick up on thosefeelings, what you will notice is thatyou will get more of the very behaviorthat you are disturbed about. If you seeyour son as incapable, he will tend to'live down' to your expectation andbe incapable. If you see your daughteras weak and dependent, you'll get agood dose of these qualities as well.Do you see how you're the problemhere?

It's important to note that this initial'seed' of blame will have a tendencyto cycle and grow stronger. The more

Accepting that you are the problemA father carries many burdens, but the heaviest is acknowledging your shortcomings with your family, says Anil Patel…

your kids feel blamed for their behavior, the more negative feelings will comeyour way. In their book, Leadership andSelf-Deception (2000), the ArbingerInstitute talks about how easily wedeceive ourselves and blame others, causing our relationships to worsen. Notonly do we easily blame others, we aretotally unaware of how we contributeto the problem by initiating this blame.

It is not being suggested that youshould never have any negativethoughts about your family. These kindsof thoughts will come and go. What'simportant to remember is that blamingyour kids isn't just ineffective, it'sdestructive!

So why do it? What will work is tofind ways to be more aware of howyou're pointing fingers and to take onthe responsibility of lessening theimpact when you're doing it.

The most important way you can dothis is to love your kids unconditionally. You can see them as the wonderful, resourceful, loving people that they areand not as their flaws.

It's also helpful to realize that yourego will often manipulate things so thatyou can't always see the best in yourkids. This effectively prevents you fromhaving to consider your own

contribution to the problem. Acceptingthis as a permanent condition foryourself will allow you to be moreaware of the problem when it doessurface.

So what can you do when youbegin to see your kids or your familyas 'the problem' and your relationshipsbegin to suffer?• Be committed to staying aware ofthis tendency and to get accountabilityfrom your wife or others around stayingaway from it.• Know the behavioral signs when youare judging others as the problem- youare most likely to feel irritated, angry, argumentative, etc.• Don't try to change your kids; they'llknow what you're up to and will resistyou.• Always look at what you can do tochange - and this takes a lot of courage.• Get support; for a long time fathershave believed that they should be ableto do it all on their own. Enlist otherfathers or a coach or mentor to helpyou to be as effective as possible.• Find a way that you can 'practice'the skill of loving your childrenunconditionally - being loving andsupportive when they're not at theirbest is one way to do this.

Our children, our future: One of the easiest ways to connect to your childrenis by not judging them harshly or looking down on them

YOUTH CLUBS are an important part of building a strong, consistent Samaj. As someone once said, ‘The survival ofour Samaj increasingly depends on the success of the youth.’Eventually the people who work day and night for our Samajwill stop and the youth will be looked upon to take over. We, the Houston Youth, started our Youth Club in the summerof 2007. We had a few problems that caused us to remakethe club this past summer. Overall, we had our fair share ofups and downs which is the way it goes. Every neworganization or club will have their struggles in thebeginning. We do not regret anything we have done in thepast because it has helped us become stronger as a YouthClub. We encourage all youth to stand up and take theirSamaj to the next level by forming a Youth Club.
