Cati Diamond StoneKomen Atlanta Executive Director
#IAmKomenATL - I proudly serve Metro Atlanta as the Executive Director for Komen Atlanta. Five years ago, at the age of 35, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. My cancer was aggressive, and so was my treatment: chemotherapy, radiation, a mastectomy and numerous reconstruction surgeries. But one treatment ultimately saved my life: a medication called Herceptin, which was developed through funding from Susan G. Komen. Thanks to Komen and its many supporters like you, I survived. I promise to work every day until we fulfill Nancy Brinker’s promise to her sister Susan G. Komen: to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

BREAST CANCER IN ATLANTA: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in women in Georgia. It is also the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Georgia women. Early detection through screening is key to survival. However, many of Metro Atlanta’s women are diagnosed at later stages, making both screening and diagnostic services vitally important to the health of our community. When combined with educational outreach conducted by Komen Atlanta, these services provide health care options for all at any stage of breast cancer.

GET SCREENED: Have a clinical breast exam at least every three years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40. Ask your health care provider which screening tests are right for you and when you should start having regular mammograms based on your personal risk factors.

25 YEARS OF IMPACT 1991-2016
JANUARY 2016
BREAST CANCER BASICS: Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States; it accounts for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed. Each year, more than 200,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and more than 2,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in men in the United States. Early detection saves lives. In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer was about 74%; today, that number is 99%.

#IAmKomenATL – Women of color have the worst breast cancer outcomes in Atlanta. That’s why I am part of Komen Atlanta’s Sisters of Promise, which is a group of prominent African American women in Atlanta that serve as ambassadors to help educate and expose our community to good information. We work to aggressively and proactively ensure that we get the right information and resources to everyone.
As a 3-time breast cancer survivor, my promise is to educate, to inform, and to be an inspiration to others. Here are the top 5 things I learned during my journey:1. In the words of songstress Erika Badu, I am not my hair, and most certainly I am not my boobs!
2. Always put your prostheses in the same place at night. It is a terrible thing to be ready to start your day and you cannot find your STUFF!
3. A sense of humor really is medicine for the spirit and nourishment for the soul!
4. One must launch your own individual battle against breast cancer. I learned I had to do ME! I had to find my own statement of strength and victory. To signal my victory, with my surgeon’s approval and absolute delight, I completed a mastectomy tattoo across my chest, a flower garden that reminds me of how victorious I have been and how beautiful I am in spite of or even because of breast cancer.
5. And, early detection leads to long life!

KOMEN ATLANTA WORKS WHERE ATLANTA MOST NEEDS US: In Atlanta, socioeconomic factors including race, ethnicity, income, language isolation, sexual orientation, immigrant status, and county of residence often impacts one’s ability to detect breast cancer early and survive cancer. Komen Atlanta biennially conducts needs assess-ments that identify target areas within Metro Atlanta that display the greatest risk for experiencing gaps in breast health services, barriers in access to care, or those most vulnerable to poor breast health outcomes. #IAmKomenATL – I joined the Komen Atlanta family in 1995 as a Race for the Cure participant and have continued to support the organization as a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 1998 while training for an October marathon. Through early detection and healthy life choices, I was able to make a full recovery and run the marathon.
As a breast cancer survivor, I promise to be an advocate to ensure that every Metro Atlanta resident has access to life-saving breast health services.

METRO ATLANTA IS AT RISK: When compared to the rest of the state of Georgia, and the United States as a whole, Metro Atlantans are more likely to receive a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and to die as a result of breast cancer. With such dire statistics facing us, Komen Atlanta is constantly evaluating programming, expanding partnerships, and working within our community to ultimately end breast cancer in Metro Atlanta.
Don’t miss out on Worship in Pink 2016. Order educational materials at no cost for your local congregation at www.komenatlanta.org/wip

YOU’RE THE THAT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
One is a funny number. It sounds so small. The thing about one is, it never stays one for long.
One small thought turns into one word, which turns into one action which affects one life, one community, one country, one world. Every nineteen seconds one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Every
second we waste, one grows larger until it's someone you know, someone you love.
You’re one. YOU ARE KOMEN ATLANTA. YOU can help! Start small – spend one hour, spare one dollar, give one woman a chance at life.
Cancer starts as a single cell so small we can’t even see it. If it cangrow and spread into something so big, just imagine what one of you can do!
