The Commission Pennant
commission pennantis the symbol of a man-of-war. It is said that when th ech Admiral Van Tromp defeated an English Fleetin 1652, he cruised witha)m at his masthead tosignify that he had swept his enemies from the sea.when
ositions were reversed the following year, the British admiral hoisted a longimerfrom his masthead to show that he had whipped hisadversary. Thus theow "coach-whip"pennant has been adopted by allnations as the distinctivekofa ship of war.
ay, when th e order to commission th e ship is given, th e commission pennantbe hoisted at thega ff , high on the mast. It will fly day and night, and will be'ed down only to display th e personal flag of an embarked officer of higher: than th e Commanding Officer.

AmphibiousWarfare
Amphibious warfare is not a modern-day concept . It s history is?ed back thirty-five centuries w hen an Egyptian king, face d w ith theblem of t ransport inghi s t roops acrossa large body of water, con-'ted the f irst recorded am phibious ass ault . The Gree ks arealso> w n fo r their successful invasionsby sea .
Amphibious warfare continued to develop duringthe medieval' early modern periods, the British beingthe f irst to form a formalvine unit espe cial ly prepare d for sea service. In1775 Congresshorized the first American Marinesand they playeda large par t incrossing of theDelaware . In the Mexican W aramphibious warfare
used very effectively a t Vera Cruz, 10,000 Americans being putthe beach by amphibious craft.
The amphibious operat ionsof the Second World W a rwere unpre-ented in history. Each landing gaining exper ience , they pavedtheas the warprogressedand American strength increased.By the
' of the w a r, 84,000 landing shipsand craft ha d been built.
The experienceof World Wa r II, technological advances, and
concept of ver tical enve lopmen t by helicopter ha ve all ma deihibious warfare an importa nt part of our nation's stren gth.
