    Commissioningof a Naval Ship

commissioning ceremony marksth e acceptance of a ship into th e operating> e s of the United States Navy. An historic event in the life of the ship will takee during th e ceremony today. Th e Commander, Naval BaseLo s Angeles-Longch, Rear Admiral Valdemar G, Lambert, acting on the authority of theChiefaval Operations, will place BRISTOL COUNTY(LST1198) in commission.

iwt time the national ensign, union jack, and commissioning pennant willbe?d, our National Anthem played, and BRISTOL COU NTY w ill become theTE D STA TESSHIP BRISTOL C OUNTY, TANK LANDINGSHIP 1198, a n a v a of th e line. Th e Commanding Officer, Commander DonaldL. Waggoner, to -er with the ship's officers and men, assume the responsibility of ensuring the

's readiness to serve her country in war or peace. US S BRISTOL COUNTYT1198), merely metalan d machinery until this day, has had both a personalitysoul instilled. This personality an d soul willreflect th e willan d spirit of all

    > serve aboard h e r during h e r l i fe .

    The Commission Pennant

commission pennantis the symbol of a man-of-war. It is said that when th ech Admiral Van Tromp defeated an English Fleetin 1652, he cruised witha)m at his masthead tosignify that he had swept his enemies from the sea.when

ositions were reversed the following year, the British admiral hoisted a longimerfrom his masthead to show that he had whipped hisadversary. Thus theow "coach-whip"pennant has been adopted by allnations as the distinctivekofa ship of war.

ay, when th e order to commission th e ship is given, th e commission pennantbe hoisted at thega ff , high on the mast. It will fly day and night, and will be'ed down only to display th e personal flag of an embarked officer of higher: than th e Commanding Officer.
