BETHANY ROSE HARRISON

Bethany graduated from Arts Educational School (Tring) in 2008 and has since been working in the commercial dance scene and teaching in London. Bethany’s professional performing experience includes; “Britain’s Got Talent!” Semi-final contestant with Ruby girls, reserve girl for ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ (2010), and the ‘Moshi Monsters’ video. Bethany also appeared in ‘Street Dance’ the movie. In 2009, Bethany performed in ‘Roulette’ with the Ruby Girls and ‘Down’ - the Jay Sean Music video. She danced as part of the dance ensemble in Paul Hendy’s pantomime, ‘Cinderella’ in 2008, and following this appeared on the BBC television show ‘Sound’ for the Pussycat Dolls. Bethany was a dedicated member of The National Youth Ballet Company for nine years, dancing in many productions for each annual tour, at theatres including Sadler’s Wells, Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Hippodrome and The Peacock Theatre. She also performed in Christopher Hampson’s ‘Nutcracker’ with English National Ballet Company, at the age of thirteen. Other television appearances include ‘Pineapple Dance Studios’, ‘Blue Peter’, ‘Down to Earth’ (BBC Drama Production) and ‘Southwest News’. Bethany entered the BBC show ‘So You Think You Can Dance?’ again this year and made it through to the semi-finals as one of the top three girls! She performed in every live episode of the season, dancing routines across a diverse range of genres and worked with many world re-nowned choreographers including Mandy Moore, Sean Cheesman and Kate Prince. Bethany and Israel received a standing ovation from all four judges on the panel for their outstanding ‘Spider’ routine (Sean Cheesman) which Sisco called “Commercial perfection!” Since then she has done various music videos including ‘Melanie C’(weak) and ‘Sneakbo (the wave) and filmed the 4music ident. Most recently she performed on ‘The Brits’ for Ollie Murs.

JONO KITCHENS

Jono Kitchens is a Dancer and Choreographer from London. He is also a founding member, and one-fifth of Britain’s hottest, up and coming dance crew The Breakfast club. Having carved out a strong reputation in the London East End club scene, Jono and his side-kick Lottie choreograph and style the team of dancers for performances at fashion shows, nightclubs, theatrical events and private parties. Jono regularly teaches commercial jazz at London Studio Centre, Bird, Italia Conti and The Centre, as well as holding open class at Pineapple and Studio 68. Jono also teaches at workshops in UK, and Europe and recently finished choreographing Pantomime for Evolution Productions. As a dancer, Jono has performed for Lily Allen at the Brit Awards, Eliza Doolittle, Bucks Fizz, Xfactor, Miley Cyrus, The Paul O’Grady Show as well as enjoying a successful career in Radio, TV and Film.Jono is very excited to be judging this competition and will be looking for interesting choreography, lines and patterns delivered cleanly with great style and confidence - good luck to EVERYONE!

Katie trained at Bird College for Dance and Theatre performance. Upon graduating, Katie set up her own theatre company DE:FAULT THEATRE which develop mutli-arts theatre productions. Having showcased work at various events over the years, Katie received funding in 2009 from the British Council for her first full scale production ‘Dangerous Fields’ which was staged at Strat-ford Circus Theatre, London. Since then the company has produced a further two productions, including the recent ‘Cabaresque!’ which featured eight of the contestants from BBC One’s So You Think You Can Dance! The company is in the process of devising new work and hopes to run a new production later this year. Details will be posted on the company website www.defaulttheatre.co.uk so keep an eye out for future events! Katie also teaches at Bird College and freelances throughout the UK with workshops and masterclasses. James Fogerty is a member of Trinity Warriors BBoy Crew, Derby. He started dancing in 2001, and has worked with Hip Hop Artists such as Redman MethodMan, Eric Sermon, KRS One and Rahzel. James works with youth groups and educational facilities to help spread a positive message with Dance as the vehicle. As an individual and with his group, James wants to help and encourage the next generation, as well as continuing learning for himself.

HANNAH BATEMAN

Hannah joined the Northern Ballet in 2002 and is now a first soloist, after previously performing with The Israel Ballet company. She was born in Surrey, and trained at the Susan Robinson School of Ballet, and then later at the Central School of Ballet. Hannah lists some of her career highlights as dancing Juliet in Romeo & Juliet at Sadler’s Wells; being featured on the posters A Sleeping Beauty Tale and Dangerous Liaisons; dancing with the Kirov Ballet at the Royal Opera House; working with Wayne McGregor.

The current Aston Wildkatz Dance Society has been danc-ing together as a team for around 6 months now, taking part in performances for events associated with Aston Uni-versity; however this will be our first competition as a team. We are known as the university’s hip-hop crew, however this does not give justice to the wide range of talented individuals that we have performing for us today; we have experimented with team member’s individual inputs of free-styling, tutting, and also have our own dancehall enthusiast; all aspects of dance that we have been keen to include in our routine to show the diversity of our skills and creative flare. We practice 2-3 times a week and have become a close unit of friends who all share a passion for dance. For some of our team, university was the first time they experienced a dance lesson, and for others it has given the opportunity to grow as performers. We hope today will ex-press to everyone our love for dance, the creation of all our hard work, and the enjoyment that it brings us to dance within a group of such amazing and inspirational individuals.

Bodysoc is University of Bath’s dance society and we welcome all levels and styles of dance. We range from Hip Hop to Ballet, from Tap to Contemporary and love putting on shows and performances. We really enjoyed coming to Loughborough Dance Competition last year and entered three categories coming third in one of them. This year we are bringing four brand new exciting dances and hope to do even better! Bodysoc participates in a huge amount of performances and shows at Bath Uni-versity, including our huge annual show every year where we invite any member of the society to choreograph. We are an energetic society with well over 150 members who all love to dance! We are very excited about dancing at Loughborough Competition this year and getting to watch all the other amazing dances! Good Luck to everyone performing!

We are group of selected dancers who get together to rehearse routines in various styles, choreographed by two Squad Leaders. Our aim is to represent our University to the highest standard by performing in events, competitions and shows throughout the year. Previous events have in-cluded dancing at the HMV Institute in Birmingham, sup-porting Katy B and providing entertainment at half time of Vernon Kay’s last American Football game, filmed for ITV2 series ‘Under Pressure’.

Brighton Panthers dance squad have been together for the last three years, however this year we have a whole new squad! We are returning to Loughborough dance competition for the second time and can’t wait to put our new members and routine to the test. The squad is made up of a group of students from across all subject areas but who all have fun and let the crazy out when it comes to dance. Brighton Panthers have taken part in events in and around Brighton and are hoping to compete in even more competitions this year. Thank you again to Loughborough for hosting this competition!

The University of Bristol Dance society is one of Bristol’s largest and friendliest societies! We run many classes rang-ing from ballet, contemporary and jazz to hip hop, zumba and much more, throughout the year at student-friendly rates. Classes are taught by professional teachers and are available for all levels, beginners to advanced.Throughout the year we have various social events, work-shops, trips, competitions and other choreography and performance opportunities. This culminates in the annual show, with a sell-out audience of hundreds, which brings together the many different styles of dance in one perfor-mance. This is performed in the Union over 3 days and all profits go to charity.

Approaching our tenth year, Derby Dance Team are going from strength to strength with the help from our committed members and sharing a passion for dance.Last year was a massive achievement for us as we placed 1st in Novice Jazz, 2nd in Novice Contemporary and 2nd in Novice Hip-Hop, after lots of happy tears and lots ...of celebrating we were so proud to take the trophies back home and show Team Derby that our months of hard work has paid off!!This year we are back stronger than ever, after performing at a lot of successful events and receiving amazing feed-back and support we aim to show that hard work and dedication will pay off for a second year in a row!!This year we are competing in Advanced jazz and Ad-vanced Ballet as well as Novice contemporary and Novice Hip-Hop!After forming some really strong friendships and bringing along some amazing supporters were really looking for-ward to Loughborough Competition 2012!!

At Exeter University, dance is a major part of the student life. Our society runs classes in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, street and hip-hop and hold many workshops throughout the year to enable our members to experience all forms of dance. We have been attending Loughborough Dance competition for many years now and it always proves to be a fun filled weekend for our dancers and the other teams. We want to thank the choreographers and members for all the hard work they have done and want to thank Lough-borough for holding this competition. UoG Dance is a fairly new team that has gone from strength to strength over the past 3 years with numbers increasing year on year to create the team we have now. The current team consists of vibrant characters with bubbly confident personalities, plenty of enthusiasm and a pas-sion for dancing and having fun. The team have worked incredibly hard to get to where they are now and are not prepared to stop just yet. Their clear commitment to the team is present in every task they undertake and is evident by their achievements to date.This is the first year that UoG Dance have entered into any competitions and this is a new and very exciting challenge for them, Something they will approach with a clear deter-mination and a smile.

The KCL FUSION Dance Troupe stem from main Dance Society at King’s. We are a diverse family of individuals who possess different strengths in various dances styles, fused together by our passion and love for dance. We pride ourselves on our love for creating, sharing and per-forming dance, but most of all we love to have FUN whilst doing so! We hope to showcase this through our perfor-mances. The KCL FUSION Dance Troupe was originally formed in 2007 and we have thoroughly enjoyed sharing our passion for dance at national university dance competi-tions over the last five years. Leeds Freestyle Dance was established in September 2010. It is a fusion of a variety of different dance styles, such as, modern, street, commercial jazz and contemporary dance. We’ve had an amazingly successful first year involving win-ning first place in Advanced Modern at ‘Durham Dance Fusion 2010’, winning the Modern category and Best Cho-reography at ‘Salou Fest’, filming a flash mob for Channel 4’s ‘Gok’s Fashion Fix’, participating in shows including the RAG Fashion Show and Leeds Rocks to name a few and finally performing in local clubs. The year was topped off perfectly when we were short-listed to be nominated at the Riley Awards 2011 for ‘Best New Society’. We are a fun, passionate society and we welcome people of all abilities to join the society. We hope to get involved in more events and competitions such as the Loughborough University Annual Dance Competition as we believe it is a great opportunity to interact with other dance societies from different Universities and observe what the other dance societies have been put-ting their hard work into.

Being one of the biggest clubs in Loughborough’s Athletic Union, LSU Dance has gone from strength to strength in recent years, winning AU ‘Club of the Year 2009/2010’. Loughborough’s annual inter university dance competition has become bigger and better every year, having a record number of entries we hope to expand further into a two day competition next year! Our club is open to every ability of dancer and offers weekly classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Con-temporary and Hip Hop at a variety of standards, giving every member of the club a chance to dance! Newcastle Dance Society is one of our University’s most popular societies with over 300 members. We have class-es for a range of abilities in a wide variety of styles in-cluding ballet, jazz, hiphop/street, contemporary, musical theatre, tap and this year’s newest addition, lyrical. All of our classes are taught by members of the society who all have years of experience and most importantly lots of en-thusiasm, creativity and commitment. As well as attending lots of competitions up and down the country, every year we have an annual show to showcase all our hard work to our family and friends. We also give our dancers the op-portunity to take part in a variety of workshops taught by professionals, which are always lots of fun. This year we held our second competition, it was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone. We are all very excited to be per-forming in the Loughborough competition, it’s been a great year for Newcastle Dance Society and we hope to carry on getting bigger and better!

Being only 5 years old, competing at LSU is still very new to the Dance Club. We have grown with each year we have been running, and achieved so many things along the way. In 2011, we won “Best Overall Club” at LSU, a massive achievement for such a young club, and an award we will treasure for many years to come. We thrive on the support we have within both the club and the university, with a dedicated squad and great team spirit. The club relies on the devoted committee to organ-ize and manage the squad, as well as the dedicated cho-reographers: Amy Leach, Anne Draisey, Becca Jermy, Chelsey King, Karen Pajarillaga and Natasha Jackson. Competitions are the highlight of our year, enabling us to perform and do what we love and enjoy most. We can only hope our success continues in the years to come at Loughborough!

The University of Nottingham - NUDance and Nottingham Rubix - are delighted to be returning to Loughborough to compete in all 5 advanced sections! Having been placed in every section last year all teams have been working harder than ever to keep up their fantastic standard. We have some fantastic new dancers this year that will be joining previous competitors to bring you some fantastic routines today! Our professional dance teachers have put together superb routines this year bringing some fantastic original ideas which we hope the judges and audience will enjoy. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sue Sparham, Kristy Speed, Gareth Woodward and Haley Clarke for their hard work and marvellous choreography again this year. NUDance has continued to go from strength to strength in the past year winning Best Society and Best Performance for the second year running in Nottingham University’s An-nual Societies Awards. The University of Portsmouth Dance Club was formed 5 years ago and is now in its 4th year of competing. What started out as a hip hop squad has now expanded to allow Jazz, Contemporary and Lyrical squads. The univer-sity does not provide any dance related courses and so all the members of the squads are formed from a wide variety of students, spanning all 3 years. The squads per-form at local clubs, fundraisers, sports games and even Fratton Park for the Portsmouth vs Manchester Utd game. The Contemporary squad is coached by 3rd year student Rosie Powell who takes time out from her placement at IBM to teach the girls. This will be Rosie’s 2nd year as choreographer and she hopes to make a big impact at this year’s event. The Hip Hop squad have won 2 advance titles at Sunder-land University competition and hope to add to this in the future. They are coached by Dave Terril and Tega Alex who sometimes find it hard to control an all girl squad! The Jazz squad is comprised of students from both hip hop and contemporary girls and is choreographed by the dancers themselves. The squad placed 1st in the begin-ners category at Sunderland last year after putting the piece together in 5 hours the week before competition.Portsmouth are very excited to be coming back to Lough-borough this year and wish all the teams the best of luck.

QUEEN MARGARETEDINBURGH

Queen Margaret Dance Society aims to provide a safe, happy and friendly environment in which students can come along to learn new skills of dance as well as keep-ing fit and making new friends. QMU Dance Society prides themselves on being a team which can promote all styles of dance to the highest standard throughout the Edinburgh Area. Our Dance society has become bigger and better each year. We started with a very small Select Team who would perform at local events and fundraisers. In 2011 with our members almost doubling we now have started to grow into a large dance company which has two defined teams of Beginners and Intermediate. QMU Dance Society will be competing for the very first time this year. This has opened new doors for us as a society and helping us to get recognised, learn new skills and meet other dance teams. QMU Dance Society earned the Society of the Year Cup in 2010 and the Chancellors Cup in 2011, these awards demonstrate our dedication to our society and well we work throughout the year at Queen Margaret University.

2010 saw the beginning of Southampton University’s dance society competition development; the ballet society were the first to enter an inter-university competition, gain-ing 3rd place. This was a huge achievement that gave a confidence boost to the dance society as a whole which spurred the other genres to enter competitions. Since then the SUSUPA dance society have moved from strength to strength entering many competitions in most genres producing fantastic results and are holding their own com-petition later this year. SUDS is one of the University of Strathclyde’s biggest and best societies! It aims to bring together people with a pas-sion for dancing, teaching a variety of styles of dancing at levels to suit everyone. We have classes in hip-hop, ballet, jazz, contemporary and tap and often hold extra classes in alternative dances for a bit of variety and excitement! Anyone is welcome; students of all ages, genders and abilities and our competition team is comprised of all of our most hard-working dancers! We compete at different competitions across the country to raise the profile of our society and university which we are very proud of! We hope to bring it home again this year for Glasgow! Our dance squad is about giving opportunity to people who have a passion for dance but have never before had a place to facilitate it. We are about equal opportunity and give anyone the chance no matter the level of ability because Sunderland Dance Squad is about the people who want to dance. We all love to dance and perform and we support each other and enjoy each others company, we are all friends not just dancers. We do a variety of styles and most of our dancers compete in all of these, we have amazing team spirit and have a strong bound, that is what makes our squad work.

University of East Anglia has two separate dance clubs, which come together to perform a range of shows and events in-cluding fashion shows, and in the student nightclub. We also have a bit of a fun side and both clubs striped off and did a naked calendar for charity! Each club has had to audition their members to select a squad to represent UEA in the competition. UEA Ballet: Ballet was formed four years ago, to promote dancing and provide dance tuition for all its members. We have beginners, intermediate and advanced classes, so there is a class to suit everybody, whatever their experience and ability level. The advanced class follows the RAD intermediate syllabus with more advanced exercises for those that have already completed this syllabus.UEA Dance Squad: Dance squad encompasses hip-hop, contemporary and jazz dance, run by a few fantastic student teachers. We welcome all ages and abilities for a fun fitness session and great routines to new music.

UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND

UWE dance is a fantastic sport that we offer to all of the stu-dents at UWE. We offer a range of classes such as ballet, jazz, dance fitness, beginner’s hip-hop, advanced hip-hop, belly dancing, contemporary, tap and zumba. We also have two squads which enter competition around Brit-ain. Every year we use the process of auditions to select the most talented students to be part of the squads. Both squads train for 6 hours a week with a coach and individual training. The contemporary squad is a triple threat, and takes part in categories of jazz, ballet and contemporary. They also take part in the beginners hip hop section of competitions, and every year is a powerful and talented squad. The street squad ranges their dance skills in street, hip-hop, break dancing, popping and locking, LA locking and free styling. This squad takes part in advanced hip-hop/street competitions around Britain and many of our dancers in free styling battles. The squad is a tight and talented group of dancers. Both squad members are passionate about dance, which is reflected in our team spirit and standard of dance and unity together.

WARWICK

Classical and Modern Dance (CMD) is one of the largest and most successful clubs at the University of Warwick. We offer a range of dance styles including Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Lyrical and Contemporary; all from beginner to advanced level. We at CMD pride ourselves on letting all members attend any classes that they wish, with an ac-tively inclusive ethos being promoted to all members within the club. Success is important to CMD, but so is participa-tion, which is why we truly welcome everyone regardless of previous dance experience. We pride ourselves on letting all members compete at our national competitions each year; as well as our interna-tional competition in Europe each Easter. We also perform in shows in the local community on a regular basis, as well as at prestigious events such as the Olympic Torch tour. CMD also partake in many charity projects throughout the year in an attempt to use dance to raise awareness of im-portant charitable issues, and improve community relations through this art form. Warwick Tap is one of Britain’s long-est running tap dancing societies. We run weekly classes, both student and professionally taught, offering training to tap dancers of every level. Eqho is the largest hip hop and breaking society at Warwick, with weekly classes for all levels.

Winchester University Dance squad have gone from strength to strength in the past two years. Last year we placed first in Advanced Hip Hop at Nottingham Trent Dance competition and third in Contemporary. We went on Tour for the first year, Came runners up for Sports Team of the year and performed a great amount locally. We also performed our first ever showcase at the end of last year, which was a great success. Winchester Dance Squad are a close team who always work their hardest to achieve great results. They are great fun, friendly and amazingly talented people. I am extremely proud to be their Captain for the second year, they have made my third year unbelievable. I’d like to take this moment to wish the Freshers good luck in your first Competition and the third years good luck in your last! We wish everyone the best of luck at LSU dance competition 2012, and want to thank Zosia and Ellen for putting this great competition together.

This is York’s fifth consecutive year at Loughborough’s inter-university dance competition, and we are excited to bring a new team to the competition for 2012! York Dancesoc is one of the biggest societies on our campus, providing classes in classes in Tap, Jazz, Street, Salsa, and Breakdance, and keeping our passionate dancers busy with performances, competitions, and events throughout the year. We’re delighted to be welcomed back to Loughborough, and hope that the competition will be a fantastic way to mark the end of a great ‘year in office’ for our current committee. Our choreographers are all students at the University, and have taken time from their hectic schedules to organise and teach their routines, so we thank them for their hard work and creativity, and also our dancers for their time, energy and dedication, we love you all! Break a leg!
