Morton is a small town of 1,126 ineast Lewis County that was officially incorporated in 1913.
The local economy runs off logging andwas once known as the “tie mill capital ofthe world” in the 1950s. The westernWashington town hosts the Loggers Jubileeevery year. The event has been goingstrong for 76 years and started with logbucking happening on a vacant lot by MainStreet. An arena site began construction in1952 and now the Morton Logger’s Jubileeis known as the “Grandaddy of LoggingShows.” People enjoy the Main Street parade, lawnmower races and of course, the logging show which brings the best loggers from miles around.

Some say it was 1937 andsome say 1938 when the firstLoggers' Jubilee was held. It is aquestion of whose memory isbest, as there doesn't seem to bea permanent record of those ear-ly shows. Some say the late F.E.Coleman was the main force be-
hind the first Jubilee. Others sayColeman started it in coopera-tion with Ed Baker, PetermanTimber Company superinten-dent, and Jack Sutherland, su-perintendent of Kosmos Timber, now known as the Morton Divi-sion of Champion International.
Still others credit J. Longmirewith instigating the first loggingshow in a lot near his auto andtruck repair shop. Reg Lesterwas arena director. Log buckingwas held on a vacant lot on MainStreet, and tree climbing was
later added on a tree near theGlen Fisher place.
A colorful "hillbilly" band ad-vertised Jubilee by touring near-by towns, including Tacoma,Chehalis and Centralia. A mock"hillbilly" wedding on MainStreet was a feature of the earlyshows, with plywood axes sold assouvenirs.
As Jubilee grew, it was ar-ranged to hold the show on thepresent grade school playground.World War II came in 1941, andas efforts turned in other direc-
tions Jubilee was not held for theduration of the war.
In early October 1946, the cel-ebration was revived as "TimberWolves Daze," with Ross Surn-worth managing it. The nextyear it was renamed Loggers' Ju-bilee and Nels "Bill" Hanson washired as manager.
Bleachers were built andportable bleachers were broughtin the following year to handle

the crowds. High climbing wasdone on trees near the Tilton River, and cable splicing and tie loadingwere added to the program. For thefirst time, the roar of power sawswas heard in the show.
More bleachers were added in1950, and climbing trees wereraised on the ground. A tug-of-warbetween the loggers and the millmen was especially hilarious. Itwas that year Kosmos Timber dis-played a truck loaded with 34,170board feet of logs.
With Morton known as "the tieproducing capital of the world" itwas fitting that the tie loadingcompetition garnered much inter-est. Competition between ArchieCheney of Kosmos and Dean Blaks-ma of Oregon was also a highlightof the shows.
Morton's Chamber of Commerceaccumulated Jubilee funds eachyear and purchased two blocks inthe Collar-Wood addition to giveJubilee a home and provide Morton

Jubilee Park is another addi-tion brought about by the Log-gers' Jubilee. Through the ef-forts of the Chamber of Com-merce, the park has graduallybeen improved and now has aLittle League ball field andplayground equipment. An oldsteam donkey, believed to havebeen in use in the Morton-Min-eral area around 1918, was do-nated by Otto and Bill Studhal-ter for display in the park. Thesteam donkey has since been
moved to Gus Backstrom Park.In 2016, Jubilee donated$20,000 to the City for play-ground equipment in the Park.
For nearly 30 years Eugene"Bing" Bingaman commandedthe arena events. In 1989 hisnephew Charlie Russell accept-ed the challenge and responsi-bility. In 2004 the torch washanded over to Brian Dalton.
The voice from the announc-er's mike was Gil Coleman inthe early years. Gary Coleman,Reg Lester, Jr., and MikeFairhart all Morton natives, have handled the job.
In 2008, the Jubilee lost RegLester Jr. after serving the show

for 42 years. In 2009, RickStockdale another Morton na-tive, joined Mike Fairhart inannouncing the Jubilee.
Any history of Jubilee mustbe sketchy because of space, but would not be completewithout mention of the fine co-operation offered by the loggingoperators of the surroundingarea. They have made dona-tions of money for contestantprizes and have supplied logsand materials needed for theshows. The countless hours ofvolunteer work by community-minded people in staging sucha show can never be valued indollars and cents and it wouldhave been impossible to list allthose whose efforts have nour-ished the infant fledgling into afull grown show over the years.
Each year the Jubilee, startedso many years ago, grows biggerand better. It has become knownas “the Granddaddy of LoggingShows”. On Thursday night, theQueen's Coronation begins thenow four-day weekend, whileFriday night hosts the annual"National Championship Lawn-mower Races". Saturday beginswith a 10K run as well as bedraces, our grand parade, and thefirst of our two day logging showhosting some of the nations topprofessional logging competitors, and ends a street dances onMain Street for all ages.
One of the most interestingfeatures of Jubilee weekend isthe Saturday parade, sportingjunior events, floats, marchingunits, clowns and displays of log-ging equipment. It has beentabbed one of the best loggingshow parades in the country.
Thanks to the BudweiserBrewery and Peterson Distribut-
ing of Chehalis, Loggers' Jubileehad the rare privilege of hostingthe Budweiser Clydesdales twicein four years. In 1989 they werehere for Jubilee's WashingtonCentennial celebration. In 1992,they marched in our parade andlogging arena as a part of Log-gers' Jubilee's 50-year anniver-sary. We would always welcomethe grand horses and hope tohave them back again some day.
Without the help of our com-munity, Show Sponsors - KINGDistributing of Chehalis andPort Blakely, our Event Spon-sors, local businesses, and themany volunteers, the Jubilee
would not be the success it is.Proceeds from the Logger's Ju-bilee are distributed throughoutEast Lewis County. Besides dedi-cating a majority of funds backto the Morton Chamber of Com-merce, the Jubilee supportsscholarships, sport teams andother organizations from Cen-tralia to White Pass. Please browse around on ourwebsite, we hope you will visitMorton this next year -August 9 - 12, 2018

Are His eArs stiLL ringing?Old cat skinners are going to be amused by this picture. There is aright way to grub out a standing tree, and this photo shows how notto do so. This operator is one very lucky individual. Oh, he made thetractor go back and forth and the blade go up and down, but he didnot know what he was doing. Luckily for him, the Caterpillar D8-Khad a heavy duty canopy, as only a limb riser suffered any real dam-age. This photo of western road construction was found in an olddesk being discarded in the Memphis,Tennessee area. It was sent tome by my friend there, Rob McCleary, who also happens to work forthe Cat dealer In Memphis, “Thompson Machinery.” I’ve been there, and they are nice folks.

is tHis A LoAD or WHAt?Some loggers would horribly overwork or overloadthe old moving cars. These flat steel-deck donkeymoving cars were designed with rounded corners andedges, so the machines could pull themselves on, turn, and be moved down the line to the next job. This relatively light-weight car is moving a big yardingdonkey for the West Fork Timber Co. of Mineral,Washington. West Fork Timber, which vowed to neverclose, and used to say “There will always be WestFork,” was recently sold to Sierra Pacific. West ForkTimber is no more.
