Healthcare in its various forms require patients to visit clinics, hospitals and healthcare centers for treatment and services. In

developed areas this is possible due to availability of clinics, hospitals and healthcare centers, but in remote and rural areas

access to even basic healthcare can be difficult.

Other factors like access to transport, skilled staff, trained doctors, access to proper medical equipment and medical sup-

plies ads to the burden of proper healthcare delivery in remote and rural areas. The African continent has over 30 million

square kilometers of land and large portions of these are still deemed rural (almost 70% of population still resides in rural

areas) with little access to proper healthcare centers, clinics and hospitals. With overcrowding at public healthcare centers a

solution to offer medical and healthcare services to rural, remote and even developed and overcrowded areas can be done

by implementing mobile clinics and mobile healthcare vehicles.

Mobile clinics and healthcare vehicles can take on various forms from small panel vans, light duty truck, heavy duty trucks

with 4x4 and 6x4 capability to busses, as well as container based units and fast erectable systems. Just as varied is the

disciplines and services offered in these units ranging from primary healthcare services, mother & child services, laboratory

and pathology services, dental & eye services, occupational health screening, radiology and imaging services to more spe-

cialized surgical intervention and medical emergency services.

When deciding on mobile clinics and mobile healthcare vehicles it is important to take into consideration what services and

procedures the patients would be requiring or the needs of the areas those units should cover. It is also important to under-

stand the geographic area when deciding on mobile clinics and vehicles since poor roads and lack of infrastructure requires

rugged and self-sustained solutions.

The medical equipment used for mobile clinics should be secured and suited for these applications and conditions since

poor designed, installed and secured medical equipment can result in a non-functional mobile clinic or vehicle. The usage,

training and after sales support of the medical equipment, vehicle and sub-systems is vital in making sure that the mobile
