LTE Bands vs Channel Bandwith
Source: 3GPP TS 36.101 version 10.7.0 Release 10
More spectrum i.e. more capacity available at higher frequencies
LTE and Carrier Aggregation
• LTE Rel 8 & 9
– Single-carrier operation
– Bandwith from 1.4 MHz, through 3, 5, 10, and 15, up to 20 MHz
• LTE Rel 10
– Aggregation of up to 5 “component carriers” i.e. the LTE Rel 8 & 9 carriers
– As a result up to 100 MHz (i.e. 5 X 20 Mhz)
– Each component fully compatible with Rel 8 & 9 i.e. co- existence of Rel 8, 9, & 10 Ues possible
Frequency Impact on Cell Size
LTE Prime Spectrum Bands • New Spectrum
– 2.6 GHz in Europe & APAC (main LTE capacity band) auctions completed in many european countries
– Digital Dividend (coverage bands) • Most Common LTE Bands (FDD)
– 700 MHz: band 12, 13, 14 & 17 (new) – 800 MHz: band 20 (new) – 1800 MHz: band 3 (typically re-farmed) – 2600 MHz: band 7 (new)
• Other LTE Bands – 2.1 GHz : band 1 – AWS: band 4 – 900 MHz: band 8 – 850 MHz (Japan - various): band 6 – 1700 MHz: band 9
NA - 700 MHz - AWS
LATA - 700 MHz - AWS - 2600 MHz APAC
- 700 MHz - 800 MHz - 1800 MHz - 2100 MHz - 2600 MHz
Middle-east - 900 MHz - 1800 MHz - 2300 MHz - 2600 MHz
Europe - 800 MHz - 1800 MHz - 2300 MHz - 2600 MHz
Digital Dividend Bands • Switchover from analog to digital TV • 2007 World Radio Conference (1st
Digital Dividend) – Region 1 (Europe, Middle East and Africa) identified
790–862 MHz for mobile services : Band 20 – Region 2 (Americas) identified 698–806 MHz : Band
13-17 – Region 3 (Asia) mobile allocations are 470–960 MHz,
with a number of Asian nations identifying 698–806 MHz for IMT systems.
• 2012 World Radio Conference (2nd Digital Dividend)
– allocate more UHF spectrum for mobile services in Region 1 (Europe, Russia, Africa, parts of Middle East). This allocation, 694–790 MHz, to come into force in 2015, is next to the existing digital dividend band (790-862 MHz).

LTE Bands in Asia-Pacific
UAE makes mobile broadband breakthrough in 700 MHz band • Combining the 800 MHz
band plan for Region 1 with the lower portion of the Region 3 700 MHz band
• First country in Region 1 to offer mobile broadband in both bands
2012 World Radio Conference (2nd Digital Dividend)
Second Digital Dividend in Europe
790-862 MHz digital dividend
UHF TV channels (UHF band IV and V)
490 MHz
694 MHz second digital dividend 790 MHz
0 Second digital dividend is often reffered to as "700 MHz band"
0 This is a natural candidate for second digital dividend
0 WRC-12: use band 694-790 MHz for mobile IMT after WRC-15
LTE Re-farming Bands LTE Refarming in NA - 1900 MHz - AWS - 2600 MHz (TDD)
APAC - 700 MHz - 800 MHz - 1800 MHz - 2100 MHz - 2600 MHz
LTE Refarming in Middle-east
-1800 MHz - 2100 MHz (TDD) - 2300 MHz (TDD) - 2600 MHz (TDD)
LTE Refarming in Europe
- 900 MHz - 1800 MHz - 3500 MHz (TDD)
LTE Refarming in LATA
- 1900 MHz - AWS - 2600 MHz (TDD)
Q4-2011: 30% LTE Subscribers served by re-farming bands (mostly AWS & 1800 MHz)
Evolution of frequency band allocation New Bands:
- 2.6GHz spectrum mainly for LTE; mainly for hotspot and dens urban areas
- “Digital Dividend” (e.g. 800MHz/700MHz bands): mainly for suburban and rural areas
2.1GHz Band: Mainly for UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+
900MHz & 1800MHz Bands;
to LTE
- 900MHz refarming already started for UMTS usage
- 1800MHz will be re-farmed directly

Re-farming 2G Band into LTE Band
• The Whole BW is 2G i.e. mostly voice traffic
• Re-farming some BW from 2G to LTE i.e. increased data traffic
• The whole band is LTE i.e. with LTE offering both voice & data support
Commercial RAN vendors offer flexible spectrum
2G
2G
sharing among multiple RATs (e.g. 2G & LTE)
LTE in re-farming spectrum : The 1800 MHz Case • Widespread Allocation
– More than 350 operators are estimated to have been allocated 1800 MHz spectrum
– Today 1800 MHz is mainly used for voice (GSM) service – GSM voice traffic is peaking/reducing; data traffic is growing exponentially – 1800 MHz is a prime band for LTE international roaming
• Large Spectrum – In many markets 1800 MHz represents the largest spectrum allocation – 60% of 1800 MHz spectrum in the top 7 EU markets (*) is available in 10
MHz or wider assignments – 1800 MHz band is harmonized, non-fragmented, and often only partially-
utilized
• Technical Advantages – Coverage area is about 2X larger than LTE2.6GHz with better indoor
penetration. – 35% improvement in cell edge throughput compared to LTE2.6GHz. – Reduction of Extra sites results in quick delivery of the LTE to market.
Providing initial widespread coverage with LTE in the 1800 MHz band can be as much as 60% cheaper than covering the same area with LTE using higher frequency bands
– Reuse of existing GSM1800 sites and possibly share antenna systems
• Ecosystem Readiness – 1800 MHz RF components now available in volume production from
multiple vendors – 14 commercial LTE1800 networks launched
* France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, UK
