Lecturer: Drs. Rumbardi, M.ScEnglish Department - Andalas university

Smt. VIII: 2013-2014

Terminologies Curriculum is a complete course of study offered by a

school; it includes a list of subjects or courses to be learnt/taught during an academic program. It is usually given by a school to new students in the beginning of the program.

Syllabus, is the subpart of curriculum, which outlines a single subject or course; it includes a detailed outline of topics which should be covered for a term or a semester. It acts as a guide to both the teacher and the learner. It is usually given by teacher to student in the beginning of the program.

Lesson plan is a subpart of syllbus; it is a teacher's

plan for teaching a lesson of a specific topic of the syllabus.

Lesson PlanWhat Is A Lesson Plan? A lesson plan is a teacher's plan for teaching a

lesson. It can exist in the teacher's mind, on the back of an

envelope, or on one or more beautifully formatted sheets of A4 paper.

Its purpose is to outline the "programme" for a single lesson. That's why it's called a lesson plan.

It helps the teacher in both planning and executing the lesson.

And it helps the students to learn some specific thing that they didn't know at the beginning of the lesson (or practise and make progress in that specific thing).

Making a Lesson PlanKey Concepts A lesson plan is written document that

contains well planned activities (road map) for delivering a lesson for a session of teaching. It is made to develope the teching units of the syllabus of a teaching program.

A lesson plan is a plan for the objectives of teaching, the materials to teach, how to teach, and how long to teach.

It is an essential foundation for a successful lesson.

A lesson plan will include: The title of your program. The grade/level of your class. The date of your teaching. The material (text book) you will use. (Unit title/ page) The topic: function/ task/ structure you will teach. The total time you need. The objectives of your lesson. The teaching visual aids you will use. The grammar focus you will teach. The vocabulary you will teach. The pronunciation you will teach Classroom procedure, the detailed techniques of your activity

Warm-up This includes a review of the

previous lesson linked to this new lesson;

Questions and answers used to elicit conversation using the new structure and function; to show examples of what your students will learn in this lesson.

Presentation In the presentation you do about

75% of the speaking. You are presenting new concepts,

modeling vocabulary/structure/function, etc. to the class. Use the white board, OHP, LCD in focus!

Practice Students speak about 60% of the time,

you 40%, modeling of vocabulary, dialogue, pronunciation, intonation, etc.

A practice exercise is used for individual/pair/group work that is monitored by you.

Practice is done by the students at their desks.

Production Students speak, write, listen and practice

what they have learned. Students speak 90% of the time, you 10% -

only to correct if necessary. A production exercise is given – generally

not the same sheet of exercise/activity that was done in the practice section.

Student has freedom to produce what thay want to say based on the lesson they have learned.

Evaluation and Conclusion Discuss/recap what you have taught and

students learned today. Ask question to evaluate if objectives are

achived. Ask students to ask question “Any

Questions?” Collect sheets for marking, if necessary. Give homework assignments, if any.
