And so we usher in a New Year and as always we begin each year with much positivity, vowing to make sure that this year is the year. Well, one good way of making sure that you don’t bring any unwanted “baggage” is to make sure that you get rid of stuff and begin the New Year afresh.

I myself am in the process of moving apartments and as a result have begun analysing what I really need. The prospect of looking for a new place is especially exciting as I begin contemplating concepts and themes. I first moved into my current place seven years ago and I have to ask whether I am the same person I was then At the time, my design concept was “whatever my mother didn’t want.” Now, I guess I have I more definite opinions – thanks in part to editing Home & Decor - which should be reflected in my living space.

This month we feature various aspects of the kitchen and dining, an essential aspect of the home, particularly for those who enjoy hosting dinner parties and get-togethers (pg. 56). We also feature new designs that hail from China (pg. 156), suitable for those looking for new edgy designs.

With the advent of modern technology, the role of a refrigerator has evolved from just keeping food chilled or frozen to possessing smart features

while demonstrating cutting-edge designs. The new Samsung side-by-side refrigerator, which

embodies the aforementioned qualities, is set to become the superstar in your kitchen.

The Twin Cooling System™ reinforces Samsung’s aim to continuously introduce consumer electronic products that enhance users’ lifestyles. As the name suggests, the Twin Cooling System™ comes with two separate evaporators which supply cool air to each compartment independently. This eliminates the transfer of odours between the freezer and the refrigerator.

Even cooling is also of utmost importance. Samsung utilises a Multi Flow technology to let cool air flow out

through multiple outlets, ensuring the freshness of your foods. Furthermore, environmentally-conscious consumers would be pleased with the refrigerator’s green ideas. Not only it is lit with energy-efficient LED lights, the refrigerator comes with a Digital Inverter Compressor for even lower power consumption.

To illustrate that technology and beautiful designs can go hand-in-hand, Samsung added a contemporary touch to the overall look and feel to the side-by-side refrigerator. Its premium design is enhanced with avant-garde recessed handles and hidden hinges. A high-end colour selection such as Shiny River White or EZ Clean Steel completes Samsung’s Superstar for a minimalist refrigerator that sings the tune of the style and flair of the 21st century.

WHo He is

Furniture designer Robin Day was one half of Britain’s most celebrated post-war design couple. He and his textile designer wife, Lucienne, were often compared to noted American couple Charles and Ray Eames. Unlike the Eames, who worked as a team, Robin and Lucienne mostly worked separately and independently, although their creations harmonised aesthetically.

Day is best known for the Polyprop, the injection-moulded polypropylene stacking chair he created in 1963, which is now considered a design classic. He was the first to appreciate that the then-new thermoplastic material could be made into light and flexible yet strong and hard-wearing furniture. It was one of the many designs he made for British manufacturer Hille, with which he had a long-time collaboration. Day helped the company move from specialising in period furniture to producing modern, low-cost, mass-produced pieces.

Although he was most noted for being a furniture designer, Day has

also worked in many fields, including graphics, exhibition, carpet and vinyl design, radio and television receivers, and interior design for aircraft.

The Day name is synonymous with British post-war modernism. The recognition he received from his furniture commission for the Royal Festival Hall in 1951, which included auditorium seating that is still in place, and the series of rooms he designed for the Festival of Britain not only proved his capability as a groundbreaking designer, but also helped bring modern British design to global attention.

Durability and comfort were the top characteristics of Day’s furniture designs. From the series of polypropylene chairs (armchair, school chair and Polo chair) to the Days Forum sofa for Habitat to the Sussex bench for Magis, Day proved that simple and clean-lined forms can be both versatile and timeless.

The Sussex table and bench (top) by Magis is a modular system designed by Day for outdoor use.

Naomi and Lars Hüners share the same dream. They dream of building a boutique hotel where Naomi would take the lead in its decoration while Lars its design. Such is the way the husband-and-wife team work since the establishment of their interior design company in 2005. They complement each other with their respective skills.

“It is a journey that we embark on together,” says Naomi. “It was hard at the beginning but we soon realised that we really need to concentrate on what we’re passionate about. Otherwise, we’ll never get to go where we want to. We want to wow people with our creativity. I believe that we should focus on the one thing that we’re good at in order to excel.”

What the couple is good at forms the fundamentals of their company. They specialise in interior, furniture and custom designs. Being a qualified German bricklayer and an interior designer, Lars has a unique design perspective that is forward thinking and practical in its execution. “We favour wood, concrete and metal,” he discloses. “They are inexpensive and, most importantly, eco-friendly.”

Naomi, on the other hand, has a strong affinity towards decorating, handicrafts, gardening and baking. She shares her views on her blog, Liebe Love. Coming from an artistic family, Naomi worked in broadcasting before she joined forces with her significant other. “Our passion for design has brought us together and we’re working towards our goal,” she says.

To date, the couple has worked on various architectural and interior design projects for prominent clients in both Malaysia and Singapore: Casa del Mar Langkawi, Opal Damansara Penthouse, DNA 360, The Wardrobe and Skyloft @iFly Sentosa, to name a few. “We’re, however, still waiting for the appearance of the Holy Grail in design,” Naomi reveals, laughingly. “An open-minded client with a deep pocket who allows our creativity to run wild.”

who Zakaria Zainalwhy This freelance phoTographer has Turned his peT projecT of documenTing reTired gurkhas inTo a phoTo bookhe loves The chance To work wiTh really creaTive peoplehe hates rude individuals

Zakaria Zainal never set out to publish a book. It all began when the now 27-year-old met a former Singapore-based Gurkha in Nepal while doing a school internship there four years ago. “It struck me that he knew more about Singapore than I did,” Zakaria recalls. The Gurkha Contingent was a vital unit in the Singapore Police Force during the turbulent ‘50s and ‘60s. Known for their fierce loyalty and sense of discipline, Gurkhas continue to guard important places here.

Due to Zakaria’s chance encounters with the retired guards and their families back in Nepal, and the parallels he drew between Nepalese and Malay culture, the freelance photographer and educator took it upon himself to document the accounts of these Nepalese soldiers. Zakaria says, “I felt I was the chosen one to tell their stories.”

The idea for a photobook came about when Zakaria met Epigram Books at a gathering of local photographers. He thought a photo essay-style book, with stark portraits of the retired Gurkhas as well as quotes and anecdotes about their memories of Singapore, would be a great way to make their history-rich tales more accessible. “I wanted to tell stories that would resonate with people,” he explained. (A 10,000-word journalism feature Zakaria had written on the subject for a school project had garnered little response online).

Through the ex-Gurkhas’ recollections of Singapore, this book takes the reader through our country’s social, political and cultural changes from 1950 up to the present. As one of Zakaria’s former lecturers aptly remarked, this book is more about Singapore than the Gurkhas themselves.

Stephanie (centre), with artists Chun Kai Feng (left) and Tang Ling Nah (right). inset Kai Feng’s effort, Some Deeper Recognition is at Work, is part of the gallery’s Untitled exhibition.

Stephanie Fong, owner of Fost Gallery, offers this analogy for the relationship she maintains with the artists she represents. “You need to have a level of trust and openness. It becomes more than just a business relationship. It’s a bit of a dance – you need to have good partners or you’ll be stepping on each other’s toes.” Now into its seventh year of operations, Fost certainly enjoys a track record of good “dance partners”, having built a reputation as one of the best local galleries for contemporary art.

In fact, the first exhibition at its new premises at the Gillman Barracks art hub features the work of Singapore’s brightest (and most established) young talents – Heman Chong, Chun Kai Feng, Tang Da Wu and Tang Ling Nah. Not bad for a lawyer-turned-art connoisseur who readily admits she was “naive” when she started the business. Stephanie recalls, “When I came back from London in 2004 after completing my Master of Arts in Art History, there wasn’t a gallery here that presented contemporary art. So, I started one. I was a bit naive but I guess if I knew how difficult it

would be, I wouldn’t have started the gallery.”Although Fost is now known as something of a flagbearer

for contemporary Singaporean art (being the only local gallery at Gillman Barracks), even that status evolved organically. “I started alone and didn’t really carry the works of locals at first, although I knew I also wanted to support local artists.” In the end, it’s all about the art. “We don’t have a big space, so we have to pick our artists carefully – they’re usually more established names as I want to show the works of people who have found their own language.”

Artists Chun Kai Feng and Tang Ling Nah are two names that pass what Stephanie calls her “litmus test”. She says, “The works need to make me do a double take and go ‘hey, what’s going on here?’” – this means Kai Feng for the “dark edge” to his works, and Ling Nah for her moody charcoal depictions of transitory spaces. This looks like one dance that might never end.

The Mix and Samantha Pynn: The Party airs on Li TV, Astro B.yond Channel 728.

samantha PynnQuestions

with...

5decorator, stylist and host of The SwiTch and The Mix

How did you come to discover that contrasting styles can actually work when put together, like in The Mix?I learned long before I worked at a design magazine that if you buy all your furniture from one place, it will not have any depth of personality.

Do you normally start out with a plan or go along by instinct?I always have a plan. You have to have a plan. Inspiration shots and a floor plan. I won’t make a single move without a floor plan. My advice on how to get started is to flip through magazines or visit websites and create a file filled with images that you like. Don’t think about it too much. Once your file is filled with enough pictures of things you like, look closely at them, you will start to see some recurring themes. Next, apply what you see to your own home.

What do you think is the biggest risk that people are not usually willing to take with home decor? They don’t decorate in their style. How can they overcome it? Don’t listen to other people like neighbours and family.

Tips for those on a budget?Work with what you have. Sometimes it’s just a matter of rearranging. Invest in things you sit or sleep on and things that you are going to have for a long time. I also like vintage or second-hand furniture that gets an update with paint. Maybe you have to paint or refinish a piece or maybe you have to just simply move it to a different room.

What is the biggest faux pas when it comes to interior decorating?Small furniture and accessories. Little things collect dust. If you have a collection of little things then display them as a large collection all together rather than one little piece here and there. You also have to make sure that your furniture fits the room. Again, you don’t want lots of little tables and chairs. Better to have one sofa and two chairs than several chairs and stools and tables.

Samantha Pynn mixing patterns up with assistant designer Julia Black.

Is there a formula for style? design’s reference to mathematical equations throughout history might suggest so: for example, danish designer Poul Henningsen’s celebrated PH family of lamps, which has shades aligned at calculated angles to distribute light evenly without glare. they were designed in the ‘50s.

More recently, Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake conceived the In-ei lamp for Artemide. the lamp’s folded structure is calculated using a mathematical programme with 3-d geometric principles. It is part of Miyake’s “132 5” project, where 3-d shapes are created from a single piece of fabric.

endless configurations, as evident in Legge Lewis Legge’s Fractal Garden, a group of 21 planters in three diamond shapes that can be arranged to form infinite plot designs.

Chilean design studio Great things to People also uses algorithms for its hand-worked designs, such as the Wall Cracked shelf. similarly, young Brazilian designer nicole tomazi’s Fractal Collection merges bouncy hand-crochet with the rigid geometry of stainless steel structures in armchair, table and shelving systems.

Italian ceramic company Bitossi’s vases and table centrepieces were inspired by the Fibonacci sequence discovered by the eponymous thirteenth century mathematician. the cylindrical pieces are decorated with rings etched into their exteriors spaced at heights according to the famous numerical sequence.

Earthy and warm, camel brings to mind sandy deserts, breezy autumn afternoons, and rustic Mediterranean dwellings. unlike chocolate brown, a big trend that tends to exude a formal look, this buttery brown with a golden undertone is more casual and laidback. It fits into most interior design styles, creating a timeless and classic impression.

Seen as a popular autumn colour trend in major fashion runways (think handbags and trench coats), it is now favoured in interior design, too. A colour scheme of camel, black and white is moody and elegant, reminiscent of crisp autumn. When grouped with similar hues such as caramel and butterscotch, or even with darker browns, the effect is nothing short of elegant and calming.

Lately, the shabby chic decorative approach has slowly made its way into our abodes, thanks to the restaurants and cafes around our neighbourhoods that have so generously adopted this soft, cottage-style look.

Bits & Pieces rides the popular shabby chic trend by offering a wide selection of home accessories, all of which are “rustic, vintage and country”. “Our home accessories possess a charming time-worn look that adds a sense of calm and comfort to your homes,” says Gan Yong Chuan, who runs the online store with his equally passionate wife.

The conception of Bits & Pieces stems from the couple’s love for travel. The globetrotters have a penchant for finding treasures and keepsakes from their cross-continental voyages. Many of the products available at the online store have been sourced from various countries that the husband-and-wife team has visited. “We provide ‘bits and pieces’ of decor items from around the world to make your house a home,” shares Gan.

Ornaments, bookends, wine bottle holders, clocks and lighting are available from the website. These small, colourful trinkets can easily blend into any corners of your home and give the space a contrasting twist. The Horse Head bookend, with a design inspired by the shape of the knight in the game of chess, adds a subtle yet artful touch to your book rack. The items in new lifestyle shop Benares may appear overtly ethnic at first glance, but a closer look will reveal that every piece is actually very contemporary. “We wanted Benares to look like an art gallery, but feel like an eclectic Indian bazaar,” says chief executive officer Pooja Kapur, speaking about each item with as much passion as an art gallery owner.

With its mix of decor accessories, homeware, apparel and jewellery, Benares celebrates modern India by collaborating with designers and artists from the Subcontinent. “Even though India is known as a sourcing hub, we don’t just buy off the shelves. Our products are made in limited numbers, and each one has a story behind it,” says Pooja.

Named after a town in India famous for its silk, Benares stocks embroidered cushions,

table runners, and bed sets crafted with natural materials such as cotton, linen and silk (of course). Indian designs are often associated with a riot of vibrant colours and decorative motifs. But at Benares, the traditional look is done with a contemporary twist, giving the products a wider, more universal appeal.

With its elongated walkway and elegantly lit arched ceiling, the store exudes a sense of old-world grandeur. The main visual point of interest, however, is the daybed setting at the end of the space. With vintage teak furniture making a strong comeback in homes, a local favourite brand is also showing us that wood pieces never really go out of style. Scanteak, the almost 30-year-old brand synonymous with teak furniture in Singapore, has just launched a new 2,388sqf store at The Star Vista at Buona Vista. Scanteak Signature offers a fresher, more contemporary environment to house the company’s clean-lined, Scandinavian-inspired pieces.

There’s something for every part of the home – living, dining, bedroom and study areas. As the designs echo the modernist mantra of form follows function, the pieces are versatile enough to match most decor schemes. The new Elements collection, in particular, features contemporary minimalist aesthetics and, being unvarnished, has a lighter tone compared to the warmer golden browns of the other ranges. The Elements range is only available in this store, and when new collections are launched in the future, they will be available first at this outlet, too.

In another first for the brand, Scanteak Signature also carries accessories such as clocks and photo frames to complement the furniture pieces. Shopping here, within the cosy and comfortable environment the wood furniture provides, you already feel right at home.

Going all out with a modern design theme doesn’t necessarily have to turn out with rigid, straight shapes. The latest collection from Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2013 season proves just that. While lines remain crisp and bold, the collection turns modern design into something a little more timeless with soft neutrals and brightens it with soft yellows. The same can be said with the items we’ve chosen here – while each design is undoubtedly minimalist, each item toys on shaping rigid lines and sporting warmer tones that creates an atmosphere that is more comfortable and adds character to the design theme of modernism.

For centuries on end, silk has been associated with luxury and beauty. Originating from Asia, the opulent textile has long been linked to royalty and extravagance. World-

renowned textile artist Carol Cassidy has made her name working with the lavish fabric. Cassidy is renowned for her signature work, where she combines traditional textile weaving techniques with contemporary aesthetics, where themes and patterns constantly evolve. The result is a wide array of textile designs, ranging from striking colours, to beautifully-matched gradients to intricate patterns.

As she had been interested in textiles from her younger days, Cassidy began studying weaving at the age of 17. She spent almost 10 years working on United Nations weaving projects in Africa and the Caribbean. It was in 1989 that she went to Laos under a United Nations/International Labour Organisation contract. Soon after in, 1990, Cassidy founded Lao Textiles and since then, has made Laos her home.

Cassidy has since trained a team of about 40 Lao artisans to produce high-quality fabrics that not only features traditional motifs, but combines colours and various techniques in innovative ways. Top quality silk is used for all of Cassidy’s creations, each hand woven and hand dyed. A technique used to produce Cassidy’s textiles is the vertical pattern heddle system which uses thin bamboo rods or nylon threads to interlace into a framework of vertical threads to establish the master template. Adding to the complexity of the skill, a master weaver may compose the pattern as she weaves or transfers a design from a textile that was made earlier.

recently, Cassidy’s renowned textiles were on display at the Shalini ganendra Fine Art @ gallery residence, which received much positive feedback. The exhibition displayed some of Cassidy’s newest designs – some of which were created specifically for the exhibition. This year, the Textile Museum, Washington dC will present an exhibition of her work, to celebrate her illustrious contribution to the art of textiles. Cassidy’s textiles are a part of the permanent collections of various museums including the guggenheim Museum, New york and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

our goals, Freiburg in Germany and the upcoming 6.4-square kilometre Masdar City in abu Dhabi are prime examples of a future renewable energy society. in a global effort to start designing for a sustainable future, the British Council’s recent exhibition titled ‘Everything Forever Now’ showcased products, solutions and approaches in sustainable design by designers and architects from the UK and Malaysia. Having started in Bangkok and travelled to Vietnam, the 21 projects that were in the Malaysian show drew in five interesting local projects.

as part of the exhibition, three creative spokespersons, namely the exhibits UK curator Henrietta Thompson, Editor-at-Large of wallpaper magazine, Evonne Mackenzie, Project Manager of architecture, Design and Fashion at the British Council, and Lisa Foo, the Malaysian curator came together to talk about the exhibition and what they hope to achieve with sustainable design.

What is the main goal When you talk about sustainable design?henrietta: I think what we’re trying to show in this exhibition is another approach to designing. ‘Sustainability’ is a very good word because it is products that are not just reducing our resources but products through their design can actually give more back than what is taken out. In a longer term, it is not just reducing the impact but it is about making it better. For example, a young graduate designer from the Royal College of Arts in this exhibition, Florie Salnot was looking at the Saharawi refugee camps in the Sahara desert and developed a way so that the women could use plastic bottles to make fine jewellery. It is very luxurious and aspirational jewellery. By doing this it gives a whole community a sustainable way for generating income and reduces their dependency on humanitarian aid.

hoW is the malaysian projectso far?lisa: We selected five local Malaysian designers with the theme of sustainability. Most of the work are not just products, but community based as well. Although the same topic is done in the UK, in Malaysia, the projects have their own unique qualities because of the context. The process might be the same, but the outcome is based on its context.

What are some of the more common everyday items in the exhibit that could be used by anyone?henrietta: There are many things. The Plumen lightbulb is an energy saving lightbulb designed by Samuel Wilkinson. They redesigned the traditional lightbulb and it is doing phenomenally well. On another idea, Bethan Laura Wood designed a set of teacups called Stain and the idea is that the more you use them, the ceramic cup gradually becomes stained by the tea. It challenges the notion that old things can grow to be more beautiful with time.

do you think the creative industry has the capacity to create change?henrietta: Absolutely, by being the people who are innovating and thinking about it differently as well as experimenting and having the ideas. Previously designers were seen as the stylists that are brought in at the end to make things look great. Now they are seen as people who can make a difference on the processes and the bigger picture. The people who are getting into the creative industries are doing so with an ambition to create change.

For Design Manager Adam Wishney, his passion for design and engineering started when he was growing up. “I always loved

making things when I was a kid. I would make radio controlled cars and planes, or work with my dad in his garage making stuff,” Adam says. “In school my favourite subject was design and technology, woodworking and metal crafts. I studied math, physics and art as well, and they all complemented each other really nicely,” he adds.

For Adam, his background in product and industrial design is shown in his work for Dyson. He has worked with a few of Dyson’s vacuum cleaner range and was the lead engineer for the DC38 – the company’s first lightweight cylinder vacuum using the brand’s trademark Ball technology for easy manoeuvring around tight corners. Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Adam to talk about Dyson and the design that has gone into the DC38.

“Whenever We design our products,

How well do dyson vacuum cleaners perform?

wHat makes tHe dc38 special?

wHere do you get your inspiration wHen creating a product like tHe dc38?

wHat was most difficult wHen developing tHe dc38?

Whenever we design our products, we will always make sure that they’re always the best performing. In terms of measuring the pick-up of vacuum cleaners and their performance, they will sprinkle a certain amount of dust on the carpet and run the vacuum cleaner over it. Then the amount of dust is left on the carpet is measured. We always have to design our vacuum cleaners so that they pick up the most dust compared to all competitors.

What we were trying to do with this machine was to make cylinder vacuum cleaners more manoeuvrable. As conventional cylinder vacuum cleaners have two fixed wheels and a castor, they don’t follow you around the room very well. As you’re pulling them around, they veer off-course and crash into furniture. We wanted to stop that. We knew our ball technology was working very well on our upright vacuum cleaners, so what we wanted to do is bring that to our cylinder cleaners. We created a series of test to measure the manoeuvrability to make sure that it is better than a conventional one. We went through various iterations and kept going.

Inspiration is a funny thing and it can come from anywhere. One thing that’s great about working at Dyson is the amount of freedom that we get. We’ve got cool workshops, machines and prototyping equipment. And we’re allowed to make as many models as we want. That is the thing I really enjoy about Dyson, the freedom to try things out.

because of its compact size, parts are thinner and become more fragile. but we have to make sure it is completely robust. We have to make sure it lasts because each of our vacuum cleaners come with a five year guarantee. On top of that, because parts become thinner, smaller and more compact, it becomes more difficult to contain the noise within the product. The cable rewind was always difficult to engineer because fitting it into a sphere is difficult. There are no flat surfaces and everything is rounded.

Dyson Design Manager, Adam WIshney.

The French brand has churned out plenty of attractive bottle designs over the years but it was in 2008 that Evian took design to the next level and begin collaborating with world-renowned fashion designers to produce limited edition bottles. The Jekyll & Hyde Project is passionate about design. Its endeavours to fuel the flame of the local design scene

was on vivid display when it teamed up with revered Japanese design giant +d to give rise to Monozukuri Design 2012. The inaugural design competition aimed to encourage Malaysian citizens to put on their thinking caps and, well, design.

Since its establishment in 2002, +d has been working with budding designers in Japan. Over the years, these collaborations have lead to the creation of various innovative lifestyle products and have garnered accolades from organisations like Red Dot Awards, Good Design Awards, IF Design Awards and so on. craftsitems that +d is known for.

The term “monozukuri”, comparable to the English word craftsmanship, was coined in 1998 when the Japanese government set up a consultative council with the purpose of reaffirming the country’s strengths in manufacturing. Takahiro Fujimoto, a professor of University of Tokyo and a “monozukuri” theorist defined the principle as “the duplication of design data into a material”. He has also called it the “art, science and craft of making things”.

The entries were evaluated by Hideyoshi Nagoya, CEO of +d based on designs and concepts that best met the company’s ideology. Recently, the winners have been announced and here, we take a look at their innovative winning ideas and the inspirations behind their work.

Reading while you eat and drink is made easy with the Booky book stand.

Whatbooky book stand. Affectionately called book bear, the coloured plexi-glass book stand is designed to hold a standard sized open book in place, making reading an ease while eating and drinking. The book is held in position at the bottom by a turned-up lip and at the top by an elastic band with two beads.

WhO dEsIGnEd ItKuala Lumpur-based American multi-disciplined designer Eric Christen. He has won several awards throughout his 20-year career in the design industry.

Why“If you’ve ever tried to hold a paperback book open at a cafe or a restaurant in an effort to read it while munching away, you’ll undesrtand that it is irritating at best,” says Christen. “About 15 years ago I came up with a series of plexi-glass stands which were designed to keep a book opened. booky is a stylised version of one of them.” booky proves to be a very useful daily product. Its simplicity in design and its functionally are the reasons why it was chosen as the winner of Monozukuri Design 2012.

Netzap adhesive polypropelene stationery holder. It is consist of a ring with two layers of elastic wires crisscrossing each other creating a netting system that firmly grips pencils and pens of varying sizes and diameters. Netzap can be adhered to a vertical or horizontal surface, enabling one to have more desk space.

WhO dEsIGnEd It23-year-old graphic designer Shaaminee Chandran. The PJCAD graduate is keen to express herself through design. She believes that designers have the ability to influence the lives of other people.

WhyThe use of web-like strings, inspired by spider’s web, gives the conventional stationery holder an interesting twist. That was one of the main reasons why Netzap was chosen as the runner-up. As a designer, Shaaminee is familiar with the buzzes and clutter that go around a designer’s desk. “My idea was to create an elastic web and to use the space between the web to grip things,” she reveals. “And since the pencils are gripped mid-air, you need not worry about damaging their tips.”

The practical NetZap stationery holder doubles as a ornamental sculpture on your work desk.

kitchen often hidden from guests’ view. Now, we are seeing a fusion between these two rooms. The role of a kitchen has evolved. It has become the new living room.

In the past few years, open-concept kitchens have experienced a steep rise to fame. According to Lam Li Hua, Brand Manager of Signature Kitchen, the popularity of open-concept kitchens can be attributed to the spatial limitations of modern homes. “As our homes get smaller in size, the boundary between the kitchen and the living room becomes blurred,” she says. “This scenario is especially true for apartment dwellers. Many developers of high-rise homes have eschewed the traditional wet and dry kitchens layout, favouring a compact yet continuous design.”

i recently attended a house-warming party hosted by a friend of mine. The hostess, who has been polishing her cooking since she moved

into her 900-sqf apartment with her husband a few months ago, decided to show off what she has learnt by preparing dinner. As she got busy in the open-concept kitchen, we gathered around the island, nibbling on appetisers. She would occasionally stop at the counter to chop herbs and laugh at our jokes.

It was during that evening that I finally realised the veracity of the saying “the kitchen is the heart of the home”. The fact that dinner was served on the island instead of a dining table was testament to the change in the way we cook and dine. During our mothers’ days, the kitchen and dining room were clearly two separate spaces; the

ENHANCING wORK FLOwOne of the advantages of having an open space is that it allows more flexibility when it comes to designing your dream kitchen. Your lifestyle and, more importantly, the way you cook directly affects the design of your kitchen. “Imagine how you would cook and move around the kitchen before designing its layout,” shares Lam. “Then, divide it into different zones. For example, one section for cooking and another for baking.”

In its 2013 catalogue, IKEA urges consumers to consider the “working triangle” floor plan where the sink, the fridge and the hob is placed in a triangle. This eases movement around the kitchen when cooking.

Lam recommends having a U-shaped kitchen with an island in the centre. The ergonomic U-shaped design facilitates cooking and traffic flow in the kitchen. The island, on the other hand, can be used as a preparation area or even double as a dining table. “If you have a bigger island, you can install hobs and use it as a cooking station as well,” Lam suggests. “It’s almost like a teppanyaki restaurant, if you will. You can interact with your guests while preparing a meal.”

Such a design is evident in Poliform’s latest kitchen collection. Despite having varying configurations, styles and materials, they share a striking similarity where islands play multiple roles as a preparation area (complete with sinks), a cooking station (hoods hanging above) and a dining area. Storage units can also be incorporated into the design of the island, making it more utilitarian.

One end of the kitchen island can be used as a dining table. This is suitable for small families. From Signature Kitchen.

59

MAXIMISING STORAGE SPACE“Malaysians are generally very practical people. And this translates into their kitchens, too,” comments Angie Tan, Managing Director of Snaidero Malaysia. “Of course, we like a good-looking kitchen, but we like to have a good quality countertop and plenty of storage space as well.”

The demand for more sophisticated and customised storage solutions has grown exponentially over the years as space becomes a scarce commodity. Be it base or wall units, these storage compartments hide unsightly clutter and help you keep your things organised. Snaidero’s kitchens are equipped with drawers, baskets and columns with wooden linings for an extraordinary sensorial flair. Even awkward corners are turned into a full larder. If necessary, the height of wall units and cupboards can be extended to reach the ceiling.

“Snaidero’s kitchens are designed to improve our quality of life. They come in various modules; from sleek, modern designs to timeless, classic ones,” Tan elaborates. “The uniqueness of each Snaidero kitchen is that it is designed by well-known designers around the world. Practicality, however, remains the core in each design. Celebrated Italian designer Paolo Pininfarina, who has designed for Snaidero, famously said that ‘beautiful design cannot exist unless it is practical, and maximum functionality cannot be achieved without a perfect shape’.”

SELECTING SURFACE MATERIALSThe next phase of kitchen design is to choose the surface material. “Tiles are a traditional choice but they become dirty over time due to their porous nature,” shares Lam of Signature Kitchen. “Stainless steel was, at a time, a popular selection but it gets scratched easily.” She reveals that solid surface has enjoyed widespread popularity as customers favour its clean look. Furthermore, solid surface tends to match easily with high gloss-finished kitchen cabinets. “Signature Kitchen offers a type of quartz surface called Silestone. Its non-porous property makes sealing and polishing unnecessary. In addition, it is resistant to scratches, scorching, stains and microbial activities.”

Wood is generally not recommended as a material for kitchen surfaces as it absorbs stains easily. Prolonged exposure to heat and water deteriorates the material. The use of veneers is also not advised as they tend to peel off over time. To replicate the warm look of wood, Lam suggests customers to opt for laminates. Not only are laminates easy on your wallet, they are durable.

INCORPORATING APPLIANCESUnlike traditional homes where appliances are simply placed on the kitchen counter, modern homes adopt a more unified look where appliances like refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers and coffee makers are incorporated into the kitchen. This produces a clutter-free workspace and, without messy electrical cords getting in the way, working in the kitchen is safer, especially for children. Ovens can also be installed to a height where children cannot reach.

“It’s crucial to plan ahead. We understand that furnishing is a step by step process. Sometimes it takes homeowners months after the construction of their kitchen before they finally purchase the appliances,” shares Lam. “Therefore, we always recommend allocating empty spaces for installation of appliances in the future. These empty spaces, for the time being, can be used as storage units and they can remain as storage units should you decide not to get the appliance you had initially planned to get.”

1 the first thing to do prior to buying a dining table is to determine the layout of your dining room. start by measuring its area and its architectural features, such as doorways and windows with a scale ruler or a measuring tape.

2 take traffic flow into account. the combination of your furniture in the dining room should allow for easy movement throughout the room. arrange the large pieces first, followed by smaller ones and distribute them evenly around the space.

3 to allow diners to sit down and get up easily from their seats, we recommend leaving 60cm of free space behind each chair. begin your measurement from the walls or the edges of the furniture. if you plan to get a table with leaves, include them in your calculations.

1 although the size of your dining table should be proportionate with that of your dining room, it ultimately boils down to your own lifestyle. if you have a family of four and only ever need increased capacity occasionally during festivities, an extendable smaller table is a smart choice.

2 there are few rules of thumb that we recommend adhering to. ideally, a dining table should not be narrower than 90cm. any less than this and you’ll find yourself struggling for a common serving space. any wider than 120cm, however, your guests would have to stand up to pass the food around, which can be quite inconvenient.

3 besides, also bear in mind that each diner will need about 60cm of space without coming into contact with each other’s elbows. therefore, in order to sit eight guests comfortably, including two on both ends of the table, the length of the table should be at least 180cm.

1 rectangular dining tables are common as they best fit the dimensions of the conventional dining room. it works especially well in a long, narrow space as it leaves more room for traffic flow. a sturdy wooden rectangular table gives a dominating flair.

2 square tables, often small and compact, are useful in tight spaces as they can be easily tucked into a corner. however, the bigger a square table is, the harder it will be to reach for food. you can fix this problem by installing a lazy susan in the middle of it.

3 round tables are often favoured as they can fit more diners due to the absence of corners. and because everyone is an equal distance apart, round tables make a more intimate dining experience by promoting conversation. We recommend pedestal tables as they offer more legroom.

1 a dining table is a lifetime investment so it’s important to choose one that’s sturdy and easy to maintain. Wood remains the most popular material as it can withstand wear and tear. highly polished surfaces, however, need to be protected from heat or scratching by using mats and tablecloths.

2 Walnut and mahogany exude a formal feel while oak and pine channel a rustic mood. marble and glass tabletops are more durable but they may appear cold and uninviting.

3 inspect that the wooden tables have been completely sealed as moisture can sneak into gaps, leading to bowing or cracking. if you’re buying an extendable dining table, make sure that you’ve tested the moving parts before sealing the deal. metal parts are prone to rust and would eventually jam. timber joints have a longer life span. 1 dining tables and chairs needn’t come in a set. feel free to mix your new table with existing chairs or vice versa. measure the chairs before you go out hunting for a table to ensure they will fit underneath. We recommend a 20cm distance from chair to tabletop for a comfortable dining.

2 consider light-weighted chairs to make moving around an easy task, especially if the table you’re buying has leaves. When opting for fabric chairs, we recommend those with removable covers that can be washed or changed.

Before you taste the food on your plate, you actually “eat” the meal with your eyes first. Plating and food presentation play a huge role in creating a delicious meal – and this includes the tableware you choose. Even with no food, beautiful tableware can still whet your appetite – witness this at Tableaux, an exhibition of “table arts, design and traditional savoir-faire”, presented as part of annual French festival Voilah!. Salivate over 10 tables put together by 38 of France’s most talented designers, including creative luminaries such as Philipe Starck and Ora-Ito. Each a balance of colour, pattern, shape and form, the tables reflect both a classic French refinement as well as a pragmatic approach with utilitarian crockery, cutlery and crystal. By simply using tableware, the designers show how they create different moods and dining experiences, be it the whimsical flight of fancy of So French or the young carefree vibe of Picnic.

Local tableware designs also have a place on our tables, with Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) alumni providing a Southeast Asian perspective. The Colour of the Year 2013, ‘Inspired Violet’, adds a surprising, elegant strength to your home. The versatile hue pairs very well with bright, citrus colours and various shades of blue, purple and green.

Once a year, the Global Aesthetic Centre invites an international group of creative experts from the fields of design, architecture and fashion to determine the key colour trends for each year. These experts come from different parts of the world and draw on a variety of cultural sources and influences, from fine art, technology to nature and pop culture. Their views, insights and findings on trends are translated into colour palettes and images, and captured in the 2013 edition of ColourFutures™.

Inspired Violet is this year’s Colour of the Year. This benevolent indigo hue, like the dreamy ocean landscapes, evokes a sense of tranquillity and stability. The mood that Dulux is striving to channel through this colour is Connection, an allusion to our modern lives where human connections are strengthened through networks, dialogues and technological innovations. Based on the Connection ideology, five key colour trends are derived.

A connoisseur of high-end furnishings, finance industry professional Jeremy wanted to display his designer decor

pieces in a warm yet modern setting, says designer Keneth Chee from Free Space Intent. Giving shape to his Manhattan-inspired vision, however, involved overcoming a major challenge. While the 1,668sqf double-volume apartment had plenty of height, it offered limited floor area for Jeremy and his family, who had a substantial amount of knick-knacks from their old home. The designer was tasked to create a spacious, expansive feel and incorporate hidden storage to preserve the clean, clutter-free look the family sought, while devising a luxe, contemporary backdrop for the furnishings.

bigger and betterLooking at the hall today – a spacious, neutral-hued sanctuary with a soaring almost five-metre-high ceiling that plays up an opulent chandelier – it’s hard to believe the living area had been disproportionately small compared to the adjoining balcony just months prior. The living area also featured plain compressed marble flooring that, according to Keneth, would have done little justice to the concept.

The designer shifted the full-height glass panels segregating the living space and the balcony, outwards to create a larger common space and allow breathing space for the furniture. This also resulted in a higher ceiling for the extended section. He then hacked the flooring,

replacing it with Volakas marble, and created a false ceiling to house the recessed LED lighting.

Wrapping the wall behind the TV in an earth-toned wallpaper let Keneth inject an element of warmth, as did planting a flame-finished granite feature wall beside the dining table. “We made a last-minute decision to push out random pieces to create a more dynamic effect – it looks especially striking at night when light bounces off it,” explains Keneth.

A custom-designed console and cupboard provide storage in the living area, together with a shoe cabinet with a mirrored door that visually

enlarges the room. In the two first-floor bedrooms, Keneth built storage up the full height of the wall to capitalise on the double-volume space, with doors concealing a TV and built-in workstation in the parents’ room. The bed there was also designed to be higher so it can perch on the bay window ledge to maximise space.

Another set of glass panels, fitted with curtains, segregates Jeremy’s bedroom from the study. Both areas are also demarcated through a shift in colour scheme – while the furnishings in the workspace are mostly black with white trimmings, the opposite is true in the sleeping space, where largely white decor provides a more restful vibe. was the real-life spectacle witnessed during the two-month renovation of this corner bungalow.

Bought because the homeowners admired its architectural elements – namely, its rectangular, boxy shape fronted almost entirely by glass panels – the house was in such poor condition that a total revamp was necessary. “It was in ruins, with bathrooms infested by termites,” said designer Rick Tay of One Stop Concept. “We retained the structure but had to gut all else.”

With hindsight, this may have been a blessing in disguise. Starting on a clean slate in one of the loveliest and most unorthodox spatial designs allowed Rick to create the perfect setting for the

Neither was a fan of over-the-top ornamentation, so Rick decided on clean, refined environs that take on a slightly raw vibe for the ground floor.

The result is something pared-down, yet not minimalist. Concrete screed flooring, which offers the perk of being easy to maintain, extends from the living and dining area to the heavy-duty

kitchen, while furniture in cream, wood tones and deep, rich hues inject warmth and colour. Full-height glass panels let in sunlight and allow a glimpse of the greenery outside, adding to the laid-back ambience.

The personable couple, Rick shares, “love the openness of the living and dining space”, in part because they frequently host dinner parties. It’s easy to imagine guests mingling at the casual dining area, which features a collection of classic chairs. The George Nelson Bubble lamps suspended above match the hue perfectly, giving the dining zone a polished touch.

When guests visit, sliding doors close off the kitchen. Rick reveals that the wife is an excellent cook, and that professional kitchen equipment – including two ovens and a wine chiller – was a priority. For a clean-lined look, Rick built storage to sit flush with the appliances in the customised kitchen system, which has a black and white theme that was chosen by the homeowners. Stainless steel counters give the space a distinctly masculine vibe.

stepping upWhile the couple initially had reservations about the staircase – really steps reinforced in concrete, with no barrier on one side – they grew to like its streamlined, unobtrusive air. Painting the concrete below the steps in white also enhanced their “floaty” feel.

One truly appreciates this home’s unconventional second-storey layout. A long corridor leads to the master bedroom at one end and a guest bedroom at the other, while the rest of the rooms – an entertainment nook, a small office and the second guest room – sit to one side. Glass doors take the place of conventional bedroom doors, while maple flooring throughout conveys a sense of warmth and visually segregates these private spaces from the first floor.

In keeping with the homeowners’ love of unpretentious design, a wall in front of the master bedroom entrance (built for geomancy reasons) was stripped to reveal the core of the material. “The couple like to see the purity of materials and didn’t want a plain white wall,” explains Rick. Similarly, the brick outlines of the wall behind the bed are easily visible. The space was intentionally kept sparse, with a cabinet and wardrobe behind the bedhead wall providing ample storage. Everything is sleek and sits flush in the master bathroom, with a recessed wall ledge for toiletries and a built-in nook for toilet paper so nothing juts out.

The house might now seem worlds apart from its pre-renovation state, but it doesn’t look overdone. As Rick says: “It lets you feel the couple’s personalities and presence, even when they’re not home. It’s calming and soothing, just as a home should be.”

Since foraying into the lighting design market in 1994, Slamp has changed the way we look at lighting. The sleepy, almost formulaic industry has been given jolts of fresh, electrifying

shocks with its unconventionally beautiful designs. One of the brand’s most recognisable products is the Slamp Tube. The floor lamp, which features silk-screened patterns, has been widely reinterpreted by some of the biggest names in design like Anna Gili, Alessandro Mendini, Nanae Umeda and Maria Cristina Hamel.

Like many of Slamp’s products, the Slamp Tube is made of Opalflex. Opalflex, along with Cristalflex and Lentiflex, are patented materials developed and produced in Germany for Slamp. They are virtually unbreakable, non-toxic, recyclable, anti-dust and colour resistant. All lamps from Slamp are 100 per cent handmade in a factory in Rome.

Slamp is available from Lightcraft, 145-5 Jalan Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur, tel: +603-9222-4219.

When it comes to tiny apartments, most homeowners would be resigned to their spatial limitations. There might

be structural restrictions, but for Mike Tan of The Interarch Design, the devil is in the details. When his friend, air stewardess Madeline Tan, approached him to plan her new shoebox unit, he took up the challenge and began conceptualising the smallest home he ever had to work on.

“Mike and I have been friends for a long time, and he did my previous home. He knows what I like, and I trust him,” Madeline says. What she likes is colour – lots of it. She picked a rich palette for her former residence (her family’s four-room HDB flat), and so was quite disappointed when Mike proposed a black and white scheme for the new place. He explained that a crisp background is crucial for the apartment to appear bigger, and

that he intended to rely on accessories to add colour instead. Even against a plain backdrop, this apartment, which took a month and a half to renovate, stands out with striking pops of colour.

Sized UpHaving enough storage was crucial. To maximise the available space, the designer customised the main pieces of furniture – a large daybed with drawers underneath was tailored for the living room, and the bedroom’s queen-sized bed is made with the same dual-purpose concept. Mike also fit the smaller bedroom with floor-to-ceiling cupboards that run the length of the room, so it resembles a walk-in wardrobe. “Because I travel so often, I find it great that I can retrieve and store my bulky suitcases so easily in this cabinet,” says Madeline.

White walls mean extra maintenance, but the homeowner didn’t have much of a choice as it was the best solution to making the tiny apartment seem larger.

A standalone dining table was something Madeline had to give up due to her space constraints. As the kitchen and living room occupied one seamless area, a slim L-shaped table (anchored to the wall) was customised to avoid disrupting the flow. “Space planning is crucial for such a small house,” Mike explains. “It’s all about proportion.”

the right acceSSorieSWhat is also evident with this home is that the lack of space doesn’t mean one would have to hold back on decoration. Leaping out of the black and white canvas are many well-designed furniture and decor pieces, with silhouettes so slim they create a cosy rather than cluttered look for the apartment.

Next to the main door is a collection of accessories (some are from Egg3, the stylish lifestyle brand that Mike owns). Tastefully styled, the clean lines of the Jim Thompson tealight stand, glass amber medicine bottles (one is used as a vase), and a zip of colour from the pink stool

come together to welcome guests. At the other end of the common area, a white Diesel standing lamp gives the living room understated drama with its large faceted shade, while a slender black and white armchair anchors a reading corner. Shots of green from the live and artificial potted plants placed throughout also contrast with the white walls, giving the home a relaxing touch of nature.

In all, Madeline spent RM130,000 on the built-ins, furnishings, accessories and appliances for her new home. And although she is glad that there is storage at every turn, she says she still has to remind herself not to shop as much!

When a pair of creative individuals with a knack for DIY get married and move in together, you’d expect their abode

to be something experimental, funky and even a little irreverent.

Home to Jonald and Yu Tong, both in their 30s, is a cosy four-room HDB apartment in Punggol that certainly ticks all the boxes above. “They wanted a raw concept with an industrial feel – one that could incorporate retro items,” explains designer JQ Ong of The Association. So, ceiling beams were left exposed, paint was scraped off, and raw ply rather than the usual sleek built-ins was used for carpentry. This had the extra effect of of helping the couple keep to their budget as they could save on laminate or veneer, says JQ. Hand-me-downs and vintage finds from second-hand stores, combined with

custom-made utility pieces, add to the casual, lived-in vibe.

works of artIf you find the open-concept living, dining and kitchen area reminiscent of an artist’s studio, it isn’t just due to the loft-like layout created by hacking the kitchen wall. It’s also thanks to the mannequin displaying jewellery designer Yu Tong’s works and the “feature wall” alongside. The “accidental illustration”, as JQ calls it, resulted when he tried to remove the paint to uncover the underlying concrete, only to discover – to the homeowners’ horror – that the concrete was in different tones. Rather than spend on repainting, JQ scribbled and sketched around the shapes, turning them into a cartoon-like character. The graffiti-like graphic has since become a talking point among guests.

WorldMags.netWorldMags.net

WorldMags.net

Page 124: Ltv1u.home..Decor.malaysia..January.2013.True.pdf

122

Pleasing aesthetics aside, the living area is also a functional space tailor-made for entertaining. Created for dinner guests to gather informally around, JQ’s custom-designed coffee table – another conversation piece – was designed to be utilitarian, made with a wooden pallet, a glass top for easy cleaning and wheels so it can be easily moved. The customised TV console doubles as a display space and stunning light feature. The track lighting addressed practical concerns as it allowed the couple to save on installing individual lighting points. For extra seating, JQ positioned barber chairs re-upholstered in a cheery mustard fabric in a corner, pairing them with a vintage pay phone for a fun touch.

The brown and grey palette of the living space – picked for its industrial feel – extends to the pantry, with laminate wood flooring running through the space. As neither Jonald nor Yu Tong cook much, a kitchen where they could whip up simple dishes was sufficient. “What they wanted was a cafe feel,” says JQ. So, the designer opted for an all-in-one structure incorporating a hob, sink, storage and breakfast counter. The cabinet behind has storage for cutlery, crockery and groceries, as well as the fridge.

show or hide?Jonald and Yu Tong converted a bedroom into a study-and-storeroom and another into a walk-in wardrobe – “they have a lot of clothes!” jokes JQ. The open wardrobe on one side of the room was fashioned with galvanised steel rods, which JQ reveals was much more affordable than a conventional wardrobe. Jonald and Yu Tong furnished their boudoir with hand-me-downs from their grandparents. Like in the rest of the bedrooms, JQ revarnished the existing parquet flooring to give it a cosy ambience.

Following the renovation, which took about two-and-a-half months, the couple are pleased with how the spaces sync and work together, with a “mini cafe” and area for “retail therapy” (the wardrobe), as JQ puts it. Experimental though it may be, the fresh, playful vision didn’t require the couple to spend a fortune or sacrifice comfort. “Ultimately, it was all about the basics: Conjuring up a nice environment to live in,” says the designer.

You wouldn’t have thought a home with four young children could be this classy or flawlessly chic. While the layout is tailored

to suit a family lifestyle and activities, you won’t find kids’ furniture, toys lying around, or even a speck of dirt.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that one of the homeowners has an impeccable taste in decor, and the other previously worked in real estate. “I’ve seen a lot of houses, so I knew what I liked,” explains Avril Sing, now a homemaker, of the adult sophistication the modern furnishings and finishes exude. Avril left the specifics of the renovation to her husband, Andrew Tan, and designers Therdnapa Charoenkool and Jeremy Lee of Box ID Studio. Having young kids, however, prompted her request for an open concept (so she could better supervise them), as well as easy maintenance and ample storage.

CHANGING SPACESAs Andrew travels frequently, the renovation took over six months. The couple wanted from the start, however, to push back the wall that divided the living area and kitchen. “We had the space hacked within a week,” says Avril, adding that the wall had made the house look darker.

Today, the elongated space has been transformed into two distinct zones: A convivial sitting area facing a walnut laminate TV wall with integrated storage and a casual dining area by the angular dry kitchen, visually united by marble flooring throughout. The wall now conceals only the bathroom and wet kitchen for heavy cooking, while a staircase with the original floors stained black and an elegant glass banister leads to the bedrooms. Full-height glass panels run the length to reveal a cosy outdoor lounge with timber decking.

Andrew conceptualised the walnut laminate feature wall in the living area, which builds in open and concealed storage for the tv console, books and ornaments.

On a typical afternoon, Avril opens a door beneath the staircase that stores the children’s toys and playpen for the youngest, Abraham. Then, she watches them frolic as she prepares lunch and cleans up the dry kitchen. “I like how I have a clear field of vision from here,” she says. “The outdoor area is mainly for nighttime, when the weather’s good.”

StrIkING A bAlANCEIn line with the couple’s penchant for pared-down modernity, the palette is monochromatic, mixed with glass and wood for warmth. While Andrew got his inspiration for the black and white scheme from hotels, he daringly infuses it with colour. The most striking of the furnishings is the Bonaldo Big Table dining table, which might look nondescript if not for its wide, slanted legs in bold hues. The couple even bought their outdoor furniture to match its colourful legs.

The beauty of the ground floor comes in part from its sense of balance and symmetry, which Avril jokingly reveals to be the subject of Andrew’s obsession. “The coffee maker was shorter than the oven, but they were positioned side-by-side in the cabinetry. Therdnapa and Jeremy designed a stainless steel base for the coffee maker so they align,” she says.

tHE fINEr dEtAIlSAndrew’s favourite hideaway is the second-floor study, which Therdnapa describes as “the most visually interesting space”. To create the impression of being surrounded by books, the designers sealed the windows and covered two walls with shelves.

The study’s black-stained parquet extends to the master bedroom on the third floor. Though already spacious, mirrors by the bed conspire to visually expand the room further, with an

couples often look back fondly on their honeymoon days and wish they could relive them. Marketing manager Adeline

Goh and counsellor Samuel Yeo took this sentiment a step further by attempting to bring their hotel in Switzerland back home.

“The concept was to replicate the whole feel,” says Adeline. This, however, presented a host of problems: The hotel’s predominantly pale wood finishes could not be duplicated as they were pricey, difficult to source and unsuitable for humid climates. The size of the couple’s tiny four-roomer, bought under the HDB’s Design, Build and Sell Scheme didn’t help either, as wood finishes could potentially make small spaces appear enclosed. The limited dimensions also meant an open plan and clever storage were prerequisites for the couple, who approached designer KK Koay from Prozfile for help.

wide openTo create a fluid space, KK knocked down the L-shaped wall that divided the kitchen from the living area. From the entrance, one can see across to the balcony with its artificial grass patch.

The TV wall in the living area sports a “corrugated” effect and is clad in a wood grain laminate, which is echoed in the console below. As in most of the home, a white and grey palette offsets the woody look. Modelled after the Swiss hotel’s concrete walls, a feature wall opposite the TV in what KK terms “misty grey” extends down one side of the corridor, while the walls, floor and sofa are white.

While the kitchen was left largely untouched, the dining set extends the “woody” vibe. KK designed the oversized wall-mounted steel dining lamp as Adeline and Samuel were concerned that strong winds might affect pendant lighting.

The couple were concerned the wooden bench seating would give the dining area the feel of a school canteen, so they paired it with upholstered seats too.

136

What makes the dining area pop, though, is the white wall feature alongside. Part of the corridor feature wall that extends to the kitchen, its “staggered” appearance hides the doors to the bathroom and household shelter while adding visual interest.

watch the detailsOf the three bedrooms, one was converted into a study and display room, while another became a walk-in wardrobe. Because Adeline and Samuel may convert the former into a baby’s room, they left it devoid of much furniture. “The red bricks gave me sleepless nights as I had wanted white,” quips Adeline. “But KK thought the red had more character, and the look grew on us.” To achieve the effect the couple wanted, KK sanded the floor to lighten it instead.

The master bedroom was done up to closely resemble their hotel room in Switzerland. The bedside table, for instance, is actually a hallway table with a few inches shaved off the legs so it is proportionate to the height of the bed. The couple also took pains to recreate the hotel’s minimalist vibe because, as Adeline explains, “if there are too many things,

adeline wanted black glass for the wardrobe, but KK suggested layering the black mesh used for the Tv console over clear glass for a unique effect.

everything fights for attention.” To avoid further clutter, the couple opted for false ceilings to hide the lighting.

However, the home’s piece de resistance has to be the walk-in wardrobe – its entrance was moved from the corridor to the master bedroom for easier access. Made of the same pine bark laminate as the cabinet in the study and interspersed with white laminate, the fascinating array of sliding and swing doors, pull-out drawers and cases conceals clothes, shoes, accessories and even makeup. Sliding

glass doors keep dust out of Adeline’s clothes wardrobe, while wire mesh layered in front – similar to that which fronts the TV console – provides visual continuity.

The six-month renovation was well worth the wait for the couple. “The apartment fits our lifestyle – the concealed storage keeps maintenance to a minimum, and we have ample storage!” says Adeline. The best part is that they get to enjoy the happy bonus of always feeling like they’re still on honeymoon, which is something priceless.

Decked out with an elegant lounger and comforting greenery in a relaxing sunlit space, as well as a large sofa with plush

velvet upholstery, the airy living room of Mr and Mrs Loh’s new home embodies exactly what comfort means to them.

Relaxation is the core essence of their entire four-bedroom condominium unit. From the soothing colour palette and subtle textures of the bedrooms to personalised recreational rooms, the refurbishment by Substance Living helped the Lohs turn this seven-year-old unit into a space that they can fully enjoy through their retirement days.

Taking iT EasyMost of the couple’s time is spent in the house – enjoying a home-cooked meal, watching TV and,

for Mrs Loh, having friends over for an afternoon of chit-chatting over a round of mahjong. And she takes the game seriously – when her favourite mahjong table had to be replaced, Mrs Loh requested a customised version that would resemble the imported one she’d owned. Now, this special table graces a room dedicated to mahjong-playing alone – Mrs Loh’s me-time room. Mr Loh’s dedicated space is a pragmatic one with storage for his golf bags, a sturdy desk for him to do some DIY-work, as well as a cushy recliner in front of a flatscreen television.

“The home was re-designed to suit their lifestyle,” says Elden Lim, one of the two designers from Substance Living who worked on this project. Besides their individual hobby rooms, both the kitchen and dining room were also catered to their lifestyles. Because their

posh accEnTsAside from making it practical, the Lohs also wanted luxe touches worked into the home’s design. Substance Living remodelled the master bedroom to resemble a hotel room. Bathed in neutral hues, this space has a restrained yet sophisticated vibe, with marble-clad bedside tables acting as a contemporary yet luxurious highlight. Natural stone, in the form of travertine marble, was also used in the attached bathroom to complete the classy hotel feel.

The common toilet takes on the home’s neutral palette, with a mosaic feature wall setting it apart from the other bathrooms.

Who says only leisure and business travellers can choose this hotel for a design-rich encounter? Make it your staycation venue and get that eye-popping experience, too.

For seasoned urban travellers, “W Hotel” immediately translates to something sensational – this hospitality brand has built a global reputation for its posh boutique look. The W Singapore - Sentosa Cove is no exception.

Designed by London-based architects WATG and local partners Axis Architects Planners, with interiors by New York/Madrid-based firm Rockwell Group, W Singapore certainly wows. The eco-friendly building (it recently received the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award for its sustainable design) looks out to a lush poolside garden and the luxurious Sentosa Cove marina, with its many boats and private yachts.

Bespoke details inspired by the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid were incorporated throughout the hotel, from the lighting fixtures to the room dividers and wall finishes, says Rockwell Group managing director Charles Wood.

B&B Italia in the lobby, Vermelha chair by the Campana brothers for Edra in the spa-located Away Suites, and Smoke chairs by Maarten Baas for Moooi as well as the Zanotta lounge chairs in the presidential suite complete that “wow” look. Even the standard rooms, while not having as many designer pieces, “have multiple layers of design details”, says Wood, from doorknobs and upholstery to laser-cut decor on the headboards.

Backlighting is a trademark at all W Hotels, and the bathroom vanity counters wear this dramatic look well.

Ambience enhances a good meal – a posh-looking entrance, well-set tables, and the mood created by the lighting. At two of the newest see-and-be-seen dining outlets here – Zafferano atop Ocean Financial Centre, and Supertree by Indochine at Gardens by the Bay – the ambience created by their designers certainly enhances the meal, and their fantastic views.

Zafferano, located on the 43rd floor of Ocean Financial Centre in Collyer Quay, boasts a 270-degree view of Singapore. On the F1 weekend this year, it hosted an exclusive party where guests had a bird’s-eye view of the qualifying rounds. (TV screens were also provided for a closer look.)

Another key concept for the restaurant is “wine”, hence the Wine Room with a custom-designed cellar featuring over 200 Italian and premium labels, and a specially designed self-service wine dispenser.

Designed by Singapore-based firm Designphase DBA, which was also behind the chill Aussie look of hipster hangout Cafe Melba in the Mountbatten area, Zafferano serves contemporary Italian cuisine. Its design takes inspiration from three key concepts of Italian dining: antipasti, wine and saffron, with a generous helping of “Italian style”.

Saffron, a star ingredient in Italian cuisine (the famed Risotto alla Milanese comes to mind), is highlighted in the centre of the restaurant, rising up from the circular bar as a chandelier of “saffron threads” sculpted from steel. The reaction this ambience elicits is a quiet, awestruck “wow”, before you stand up straighter and feel just a bit more sophisticated than when you first walked in.

Zafferano, tel: 6509-1488 or

www.zafferano.sg for online reservations.

The antipasti bar is clad in Rosa Peralba marble to show off the rosiness of the Parma ham and other cured meats. RIGHT Italian-style means simple, streamlined shapes that let their luxurious finishes speak for themselves.

the LookThe lighting, neutral colour palette, marble and leather are all Italian, and Designphase

DBA’s artful use of these in the 7,000sqf space give Zafferano that understated yet

elegant look so associated with contemporary Italian design.

Get It■ Use luxurious materials such as Rosa Peralba marble from Italy.

■ Choose clean-lined leather furniture – try Andreu World from Xtra, or Maxalto from Space

Asia Hub for a similar feel.

■ Adopt a neutral colour palette: dark brown with cream, and touches of gold and soft red.

Warm, amber-hued lighting complements the saffron sculpture and brings out the gold tones of the wood and marble.

Perched above what is currently the world’s most talked-about garden, Gardens by the Bay, Supertree by Indochine boasts that wow factor just with its address. It is set inside the tallest of the Supertrees, those energy-generating, concrete-and-steel topiaries modelled after the shape of Western Australia’s karri tree. Designer Mink Tan of Mink Architects had to conceptualise the restaurant within the constraints of the Supertree’s structure – a small, doughnut-shaped floor area (the “tree trunk” support houses the lift and staircase), a kitchen that had to sit on a separate floor from the dining area, and a rooftop bar that had to make do without a canopy because of the strong winds. Tan and Indochine boss Michael Ma managed to transform these physical constraints into truly “wow” concepts. The open rooftop needs no unattractive safety bars higher than the banquet seat backrests because the tree canopy (which contains the Supertree’s solar panels) doubles as a “safety net” for the rooftop bar. As for the revolving bar, you won’t need to request a table with a particular view – as the platform turns, you’ll enjoy all of them.

Who she is The daughTer of The founders of MorosoAbout the brand The brand’s track record as a design incubator is impressive – designers such as Patricia urquiola, ron arad and Tord Boontje have all benefited from the support given by the progressive company, which has been art-directed by Patrizia since the mid-eighties. founded in 1952, the brand is now watched for its products, which combine a myriad of global and cultural art and architectural influences for truly unique designs such as the Victoria and albert sofa, the shadowy chair and the fjord armchair.

Who he is The son of eugenio Perazza, The founder of Magis

About the brand Known for incorporating cutting-edge production

methods into mass manufacturing, Magis (which means “more” in Latin)

has produced the work of some of the most important names in contemporary design today, such as Jasper Morrison,

Marc newson and the Bouroullec brothers. founded in 1976, its roster

of products include both cutting-edge iconic designs such as Chair one by

firm is also known for its expertise with plastic, although it works with external

manufacturers to realise the designs.

a

art is a very important inspiration for design. These two things have to be together, but artists might not want to design and i can’t make them. art installations however, are very close to design. We (me) and artists share ideas just talking to each other. artists are very special people – they are sensitive to reality, and i always learn something important from them. designers working for me (such as Patricia urquiola) are also very interested in art. We go to see museum exhibitions together.

Magis is a technology-driven coMpany

(Moroso is art-driven). Which is the Main driver

– technology/ art or design?

Both have the same importance. Magis is technology-driven at every stage of the process and try to be as precise as possible in the manufacturing. With technology, you can make differentiated products. We switched early in our history to plastic, and that’s where our core expertise lies.

however, now we have products such as the steelwood chair by the Bouroullec Brothers (2008), made of wood and metal.

The fjord armchair by Patricia urquiola – it’s a beautiful project done with spirit, soul and inspiration. she was inspired by a visit to scandinavia in 1999, and she was also in love with ‘50s furniture designs. The armchair is very special as it is asymmetrical. i was very happy because people said it was too different, but it became a bestseller, and is still the bestseller.

Which product personifies the spirit

of your coMpany best?

The air chair or Chair_one. They fusetechnology and design. The air chairlooks so simple with its neat and straight form, but it’s very complex. it’s the first chair in the world made of air-moulded polypropylene. Chair_one is die-cast aluminium made by a mould and not soldered. it requires high-technology performance to control the flow of material within the mould cavity. These two are also our best-selling products, the air chair is number one and Chair_one is two or three.

i think maybe they aren’t aware that it’s a copy, and maybe they bought it because it was cheap. But they are buying an object without a soul. Many of the things we create have a strong personality, which isn’t something you can reproduce. objects speak through their “skin”, and our furniture is all about the upholstery. our fabrics are all high-quality and expensive, and if they copy us, they can’t use the same fabric or else it would have to be the same price. i don’t like the idea of people making copies. They are stealing ideas, and that is one of the worst things someone can do.

What Would you say to soMeone Who buys a reproduction piece

of furniture?

reproductions are a problem as wehave been copied a lot. Consumers are buying a product of inferior quality that will not last long. We tested the replicas. The Bombo stool copy is only suitable for light domestic use. ours is suitable for heavy contract use. i would tell them that they would save some money, yes, but in two years’ time they’d have to throw it away and buy the original or change it. But the “copy industry” is here, and will continue. i don’t think we can stop them.

everyone is looking at creating plastic without using mineral oil, but oil from plants. Many big companies (us included) are starting to research new resins derived from the fibre of plants, such as flax and hemp. now you can mould small things, such as a pen or part of a shoe, with this material (resins made with plant-derived oil) – but not yet a chair. This will be possible in a few years’ time.

in your opinion, Which neW Material Will have the saMe

revolutionary qualities as plastic?

Perhaps bioplastics made from natural fibres. There are still many things we can continue to do with plastic – it is always in development. for example, the Tom & Jerry stool isn’t 100 per cent wood, it still has plastic details. Magis’ new approach is to use plastic, but in a more measured way when plastic brings an added value.

a p

People want something that isn’t too violent. They want designs thatare very sweet, and help you to be happy. Materials have to feel “close to you”, such as wood. Wood is a fantastic material. There is less metal, chrome and shiny surfaces. We are using fabrics, upholstery and natural materials. People want to live with materials that are natural and certified organic. We are very good friends with (danish textile brand) Kvadrat, which has high-quality fabrics.

What change in lifestyle has had

the Most iMpact on design?

We are paying more attention to theenvironment, it’s more than justfashion. i hope the green trend is here to stay. zartan is the first product in that direction, and we also have an iso-certified environment management system. all the wood we use is fsC-certified. What is important is the idea, people like Magis because we are not superficial.

a

p

We are still working with importantdesigners such as Patricia urquiola. But we also try to work with new designers such as raw edges, a husband-and-wife team from Tel aviv who are students of ron arad. swiss company atelier oi is doing a seating system for us. soon, we will meet with Benjamin hubert, a British designer who has a lot of creative ideas.

What are you Working on noW

for next year?

Konstantin grcic is designinga low chair with a metal wire frame and an upholstered seat and back. it’s a new typology for Magis, but in our language. The Bouroullec brothers are creating a collection of storage containers – systems using pressed metal steel plates. There are also new designs from Marc newson, ron arad and Philippe starck.

a p

Launched this year, the Magis Tom & Jerry stool by Konstantin Grcic combines a beech frame with joints and screws in injection-moulded polypropylene.

Alberto and Patrizia both believe that innovative hybrid materials will lead design.

The new generation of designers are creating things that are simple, yet not minimal. They are thinking about sustainability, raw materials, and new techniques. They are creating designs that are more human and simple. it’s not the “idea of the future”, as in the past, like a perfect machine using incredible materials, like a ferrari. We don’t need ferraris. The world is changing – we need a nice car that runs on electricity to get around where we live.

Which young designer

should We be Watching?

Many young designers had their first project with Magis. We are in talks with some designers, but not for products yet. They include Jerszy seymour, giulio Jacchetti, dutch design firm formafantasma (we are working with them) and Bijoy Jain from Mumbai.

a p

We look for natural people with apersonal approach; a designer who is thinking about his work. i don’t like superstars. i have friends who are superstars, but they are funny and crazy. People who work with us are like friends. They are people i can go out for lunch or dinner with, and talk about music and books; this is natural between people who like each other.

What qualities do you look for in

designers Who Want to Work With you?

We look at what they did before, if we feel their designs would be a good fit with Magis. The designers i mentioned all meet this requirement. it doesn’t matter where they’re from if they’re ready to cooperate and are open to changes throughout the process.

a p

The Magis Proust armchair by Alessandro Mendini uses rotational-moulded polyethylene, to combine a traditional baroque form with the versatility of contemporary furniture.

With the second-generation leading the way for Magis and Moroso, the best seems yet to come.

If you want to know more and discover what lies beyond the knowledge of tradition and culture, Joey Yap Consulting Group could provide professional help on how to Feng Shui your home properly to boost your personal well-being in 2013. Get in touch with them at +603 – 2284 1213 for a personal consultation.

Balance is paramount in Feng Shui and one of the many ways to achieve that is through lighting. Lighting, both artificial and natural, greatly affect the

flow of Qi within your home. If you’d like to promote the flow of qi in a certain part of your home, installing a lamp is a good way to “activate” the energy. However, too much artificial lighting in a small enclosed space can lead to a rise in Yang Qi, disrupting the balance of energy. Therefore, it’s important to keep the light work minimal, particularly in a tiny area.

Lighting up your garden or front porch could be good for the flow of qi outside your house. Avoid installing a lamp post just next to your main door as it obstructs qi from entering the property. It’s true that chandeliers can add a classy touch to your home but we do not recommend hanging one directly above a study desk or a bed. The pointy edges of a chandelier produce Sha Qi.

Your house would be in its most ideal state when it is bathed in warm sunlight. Natural lighting brings about good vibe and gives your abode a “healthier” feel. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels are great for introducing sunlight into your home. Do take note that sunlight must be able to reach the inside of your house through the main door. A heavily shadowed entrance produces Yin Sha and could have adverse effect on the occupants’ health.

A creative renaissance is bubbling in China, shifting the country’s notoriety for “made in China” towards “designed in China”. Held in October this year, the second annual Beijing Design Week showcased works from design-minded brands and independent designers from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan based on the theme of “craft thinking”. These ten distinctive, envelope-pushing highlights from Beijing Design Week offer a revealing insight into China’s rising design scene.

nike Flyknit collectiveFeather PavilionIn an exploration of Nike’s Flyknit brand of high-performance running shoes, Taiwanese architecture firm Miniwiz created an interactive installation using high-tech recycled materials and an intricate pulley system of cables that responds to movement: walk onto the pavilion, and create a sensory action elsewhere in the structure. What’s more, the circular structure was installed in an old water drum and beautifully lit at night, making it a design beacon in the former industrial gas plant of 751 D-Park.

01con-traditionHeld at a gallery in Caochangdi, Beijing-based designer Sara Bernadi of Micromacro Lab presented works highlighting the contradiction between contemporary and traditional design, resulting in this collection of lanterns, tables, stools and screens in contemporary steel, concrete and glass (opposite and below). The abstract pieces featured beautiful shapes and patterns inspired by intricate decorative details, made even more obvious by a minimalist design treatment.

i am a monumentHoused in her home and studio at Caochangdi,

the latest collection by Harbin-born, London-trained architect Li Naihan brought the world’s

superstructures to the home with a bed replicating the Pentagon and a wardrobe in the

form of Beijing’s CCTV Tower. Meant to recall the legend of the Han Dynasty emperor who

recreated his entire empire in his courtyard so he could look at it from his window, it also provided an up-close look at the architectural

icons, even more graceful in this scale.

craft & industryA thoughtful response to the event’s “craft” theme, Dutch designer Henny van Nistelrooy’s exhibition at Caochangdi’s C-Space gallery juxtaposed industrially woven and handmade textile works. The Fabricate collection, comprising fabric patches stretched over wire frames, exemplified how woven lampshades could be produced efficiently on an industrial loom, while the Shelter collection displayed furniture-like screens and daybeds exhibiting geometric patterns created by deconstructed woven material.

From YuhangTwo years of research and experimentation gave rise to this collection, which celebrates traditional materials from Yuhang, a town close to the Chinese city of Hangzhou. Pinwu Studio used bamboo, water silk floss, porcelain, and bamboo paper to create modern furnishings such as the Gu chair (pictured) and Luo lamp, which is surprisingly robust despite its papery exterior. Founded by designers Zhang Lei from China, Christoph John from Germany and Jovana Bogdanovic from Serbia, Pinwu Studio had already won the Salone Satellite Design Report Award at this year’s Milan furniture fair for this collection.

10Who Henny van Nistelrooy, 32Why Having already made a name for himself when studying at London’s Royal College of Art, the recent graduate’s research-backed designs reinvent traditional industrial manufacturing techniques. Beijing-based Henny first came to China for personal reasons, but was attracted by how the country inspired and spoke to him. “As I work often with textiles, there is a vast amount of Chinese traditions to explore, such as dyeing processes and weaving techniques,” he says.

howknowconcrete screed

text Chiquit torrente

Many people use the terms “concrete” and “cement” interchangeably. Technically, however, cement is simply one ingredient in the mixture that is concrete. Concrete is made of aggregates such as gravel and sand, and a paste of cement and water. So, when you give your designer or contractor a brief for a “cement screed floor”, make sure you clarify that what you really want is a concrete screed floor.

A concrete screed floor is a raw-looking finish often seen in industrial buildings – originally it served merely a functional purpose as it is relatively cheap to install, and practically zero-maintenance. It was the award-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando’s buildings that gave the raw concrete finish its glamour, while the recently revived trend in industrial-style interiors popularised it among homeowners. The original industrial-style interiors were borne out of scarcity – “starving”

artists in the mid-20th century made old, small factories and warehouses their places of residence. These spaces then became known as SoHo lofts, and they couldn’t afford to renovate the sparse spaces.

Concrete screed floor finishes applied at renovation stage “is a relatively thin flooring layer of 25-50mm,” says architect Bu Shukun (Kun) of design firm Architology. “In most (residential) cases, it does not require structural loading approvals. The only complication comes when there is a raised floor, i.e. the homeowner wants to add a step-up of 175mm.” Architect Aaron Goh of Eco Arch adds: “Structural loading for screeding in an isolated area is not a problem, but it is always good to check with the building owner for details or as-built drawings, which are drawn-up after the construction is done, to be sure of the floor’s makeup.”

to sCreed or not to sCreedApart from the “industrial look” of concrete screed, the other plus factor is its affordability. Interior designer Maena Ong of Mong Design Studio says that generally, concrete screed costs RM5psf, or “if it is an area less than 300sqf, we normally charge a lump sum of RM1250-RM1500 inclusive of installation.” Compare that cost with a RM19psf tab for homogenous tiles or RM50psf marble slab, and it’s easy to see why many budget-conscious homeowners prefer this finish.

In terms of application, concrete screed is also simpler. Aaron explains that “most developments will already have a 50mm layer of concrete screed, so no worries about slapping on another (layer).” If the original flooring is tiled, however, he recommends hacking away the tiles “as overlays of screed on tiles may tend to crack or chip off depending on the bond with the existing material”.

Designers, too, like the look of concrete screed. Kun shares: “We use concrete screed floors to create a seamless look across a continuous/large floor area like an open-plan foyer and living-dining space. This creates a contemporary feel to the space, as the floor becomes a seamless design element.” The architect also says that what other people consider as the “cons” of concrete screed is subjective. “Concrete screed ages well, its cracks add character, and its raw, uneven appearance looks great.”

The main drawback to this finish is that because concrete is porous, it stains easily. Maena says that during the renovation process, “we have to lay plywood protection over the concrete screed as it is easily stained by paint or plastering material.” A good sealer coat, says Kun, should be sufficient to protect against stains caused by daily use.

the alternativesIf the cracking or staining worries you, there are other options that offer a similar industrial-style look. Maena prefers to use concrete-lookalike homogenous tiles as they are easier to maintain (than actual concrete screed).

Aaron suggests self-leveling epoxy or Pandomo flooring (this trademark flooring by Ardex provides a super-smooth finish), “which are less drastic and disruptive, and significantly thinner. They can be applied with a mere 5mm thickness directly on existing tiles.”

Eco Arch’s senior interior designer Justerine Lavilla shares that other than homogenous tiles, which come in warm and cool shades of grey, there are also high-pressure laminate (HPL) sheets that “can remarkably capture the real look. However these are not recommended for flooring; they are better for walls, doors and cabinetry.”

Aaron shares that “even if these solutions were executed flawlessly, they would differ in aesthetics and feel. Though some products may look the same as concrete screed, they may not feel the same – just like how some plastic boulders that we see in landscapes look real, but just aren’t. It all depends on how comfortable the homeowner is with the finish.” As Kun says, “we prefer a real concrete screed floor for its dynamic character, which changes with use.”

other surfaCes you Can sCreedbeing so budget-friendly, it’s easy to conclude that you can finish any surface of your home, and not just the floors, with concrete screed: walls, kitchen countertops, and bathrooms. this might not be the case.

do Walls. kun says: “there is less contact on walls compared to countertops and floors. the (concrete screed) layer is really just a decorative finish, thus it doesn’t affect acoustic values.” if you’re not a fan of the cold grey hue, kun advises to “use warm lighting to tone down the coldness of the concrete wall, so it won’t appear like a sterile space.” do note that concrete screed walls do not evoke a warm, cosy feeling that spaces like bedrooms require.

don’t countertops. considering how susceptible concrete screed finishes are to cracks, it would not be hygienic to use it on your kitchen worktop or dining surface as food particles may get stuck in the cracks.

MayBe bathroom floors and walls. Wet concrete is usually slippery and, as previously mentioned, the material is porous and will absorb standing water. if you insist on a concrete screed bathroom, kun says, “apply proper finishing coats of either oil- or water-based sealers that serve to coat and protect the concrete finish from getting stained and prevent water penetration. due care has to be taken with daily use to prevent hard knocks or scratches, though, as the concrete layer is not as hardy compared to other materials.”
