16th AnnualConference Program
Welcome to LOUIS Users Conference (LUC) 2015! We are happy to return once again to the C.B.
Pennington Jr. Conference Center. We have an exciting conference planned this year.
This has been a year of great change for the consortium, with more still to come. We seized the
opportunity to migrate our SirsiDynix Symphony system from a locally-hosted environment to SirsiDynix’s
SaaS environment. We are also moving forward with SirsiDynix’s BLUEcloud suite. We said goodbye to
an old friend, A-to-Z Admin, and migrated to EBSCO’s new interface, Full Text Finder with Holdings Link
Management. Many of us have had to rethink our collection development policies, moving from traditional
print to predominantly electronic collections with new emphasis on e-Books and e-Textbooks, as well as
reinvent library spaces. As with most journeys, we have experienced a few bumps and bruises, with the
possibility of more to come along the way. However, we will continue to weather any storm as we always
do—together.
In light of our recent experiences, this year’s conference is focused on embracing change and taking
advantage of opportunities that come our way.
Remember to take advantage of the number of rest areas, patios, and meeting rooms available in the
facility for networking and collaborative opportunities. There is also a selfie booth if you would like to take a
break for a bit of light-hearted fun with friends and colleagues. Please share your memories with us!
We would like to thank everyone who submitted presentations and posters for this event. We would like to
thank our sponsors for their generosity: EBSCO Information Services, SirsiDynix, IEEE, LearningExpress,
Annual Reviews, CAS, Credo Reference, Gale Cengage, OCLC, Thomson Reuters, and Marcive. Most of
all, we would like to thank all of you for attending and bringing your expertise to LUC 2015. You, our
partners, have the vision, knowledge, experience, and motivation to carry us into the future. We look
forward to experiencing LUC 2015 with each of you!
The LOUIS Team
Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate
change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable. —William Pollard

Main Auditorium A
My mother’s time as a music and art librarian at the
New York Public Library, helped set me on the path
of my 35+ year career in both the academic and
military worlds. While a personal journey, I will focus
on the teaching/learning/research trinity which has
changed dramatically during that time, in large part
due to the technology represented by the LOUIS
consortia. While not a discussion of "disruptive
innovation" per se, my theme is the need to embrace
change.

Adding Document Delivery Services to an
Interlibrary Loan Department
Room 326
The ILL Department in Southeastern Louisiana
University's library first began dabbling in article
delivery in the fall of 2012. Initially the service was
offered on a limited basis as it was reserved for
students enrolled in distance-education programs
(primarily through the Nursing Department).
However over the last 3 years the service has grown
and expanded, and now Document Delivery is
available to all of our library's users. This
presentation will discuss how the Document Delivery
service was implemented into ILL, and how the
department's policies and workflows have changed
as a result. Additionally it will illustrate how ILLiad's
Document Delivery module is utilized to process
these article requests. Questions and discussion will
be encouraged throughout the session.

Alt-Advocacy in Special Collections: Collection,
Preservation and Long-Term Access to
Louisiana alternative publications in the Digital
Age
Room 327
Alternative press publications in print present
interesting challenges and opportunities for libraries
to advocate for alternative cultural history sources in
Louisiana. Holdings of free weeklies and irregular
art, music, and political magazines have significant
research value for researchers, but at the present
time libraries may not have policies that can
accommodate changing issues relating to collection
development, long-term access, and digital
preservation. With the vigorous community of
printmakers, illustrators, artists, zinemakers, and
activists who are producing what could be
considered ephemeral materials that speak of 21st
century alternative culture, there is, most often, no
direct digital equivalent. This panel explores the
ways that libraries can approach this latter group of
sources as a collecting area for special collections
and establish outreach relationships that could pave
the way to digital preservation. Panelists and
attendees will also discuss potential methods for
fostering collaboration and awareness in alternative
publishing culture about the long-term value of these
materials as reflections of Louisiana culture.

Planning a Library-Wide Open House: Data-
Driven Decision Making in Action
Room 324
In February and October of 2014, LSU Libraries
hosted two open house events to highlight services
and resources available to LSU undergraduates.
Data collected from the pilot event in February was
used to determine the feasibility of an annual open
house. Likewise, the data collected from the
subsequent October open house was useful in
facilitating change for future events. Join librarian
Rebecca Kelley, chair of the LSU Libraries Open
House Planning Team, as she discusses how data-

The Remedial Challenges Faced by College
Students
Main Auditorium B
Colleges continue to encounter the challenges of
educating and offering tools students need in order
to be successful. One challenge is the dropout rate
faced by both 2-year and 4-year academic
institutions. To succeed in today's fast-paced,
information-driven economy, students need strong
basic skills to communicate effectively, solve
problems, and work efficiently. Colleges are also
challenged to provide students with effective
remedial resources to improve retention, enable
academic success prior to graduation, and assist
them in moving into careers. Students frequently
need valuable added skills practice to master the
subject matter, stay engaged, and graduate. By
helping students get and stay on the right track
academically, colleges can better support students'
career goals and get them workforce ready.
Planned is a discussion of how LearningExpress can
assist in identifying the issues facing a rising
percentage of students and work with academic
institutions to address them.

Room 326
Word has spread around the state about ULM's
conversion to a primary digital library model. In
pursuit of that project, the Library is undertaking an
aggressive weed: the collection is being reduced by
half. This presentation will describe the deselection
project, its intentions, faculty involvement,
adjustments made for faculty involvement,
associated challenges with the project, lessons
learned from those challenges, and how we plan to
move forward in the next year - the second year of a
two-year project. It will make recommendations,
identify best practices for similar deselection and/or
digital projects in the future.

Embracing the Framework: Exploring
Approaches for Implementation
Room 327
This sharing session/roundtable will discuss the
different ways that librarians have begun or are
already integrating the Framework in their
instructional landscape. Regardless of one's
instructional role, e.g., credit, embedded, one-shot,
this roundtable will serve as an open laboratory for
discussing or sharing Framework implementation
approaches. The takeaway of this roundtable would
be to generate ideas, strategies, and enthusiasm for
what could work in your academic setting. The
presenters will provide up to three discussion
questions and related handouts.

Making Meaning from User Analyics
Main Auditorium A
New integration with web analytics platforms such as
Google Analytics and Piwik allow EBSCO Discovery
Service libraries to see how users interact with the
interface. In addition to basic traffic information that
describes how many interactions users have in EDS,
libraries can now see how often limiters and facets
are used, which customizations make an impact, and
what types of materials students and researchers
are using. These data elements can be used to
power visualizations and graphical dashboards to
bring the activity that happens in EDS to life!
With these new data, what kind of meaning can we
make that helps us tell the story of our libraries?
Come see the new data available at your finger tips
and help brainstorm ways to turn it into actionable
reports.

Aesthetically Pleasing and Useful: Xavier
University of Louisiana Library Renovations
Continue
It was at the LOUIS Users Conference (LUC) in
2013 that three Xavier University librarians first
presented their ideas for renovating their library. At
that time, the Xavier Library had not undergone any
renovations for aesthetic or functional reasons with
the exception of repairing carpet and furniture
damage experienced during Hurricane Katrina in
2005. This poster illustrates how discarding items
formally collected in print and currently collected
electronically, gave new life to the research spaces
at the Xavier University of Louisiana Library.

Real World Ready: Experiential Learning and
Academic Libraries
Room 324
In 2015, Southeastern Louisiana University adopted
a new QEP entitled "Real-World Ready," which
focuses on experiential learning. Our university thus
joins other academic institutions revising their
curricula to increase practical, authentic experiences
for students. This trend reflects the increasing
number of professions that expect graduates to
exhibit a holistic knowledge that blends theory with
practice. After attending a series of workshops and
researching experiential education in academic
libraries, we feel that academic librarians are in one
of the best positions to support such learning
initiatives and projects. In this session, we will share
what we have learned through these experiences
and our own teaching of an information literacy
course. If you want to learn about experiential
learning in general or its specific appearances in
academic libraries, then this session is for you! Note
that session attendees will participate in an activity,
but no outside materials will be required.

E-Books @ LSU: Moving away from the DDA
model
Room 327
In early fall of 2014, LSU Libraries discontinued
demand driven acquisition (DDA) plans and removed
the majority of e-books with Digital Rights
Management (DRM) from the collection. In their
place, the Libraries focused on investing in large e-
book collections that met 3 essential criteria: DRM-
free titles that allowed for an unlimited number of
users and provided perpetual access. DDA has been
described as an acquisitions strategy to move from a
"just-in-case" to "just-in-time" collection model,
allowing the library to be more responsive to user
needs than traditional acquisition models. Yet,
collection analysis and ROI statistics demonstrate
how the large e-book package model has met user
demands while allowing us to collect for the present
and future. This model removes the roadblocks to
usability, allowing users to easily access and
download e-books. Finally, the model has allowed
the Libraries to pursue an innovative project that
aligns the Libraries' e-book collection with required
course textbooks to provide students with free
access to required materials.

LOUIS Training Focus Group
Main Auditorium B
LOUIS has always had a commitment to provide
quality training to its membership. However, LOUIS
has recently renewed its commitment to provide
training based on feedback provided through various
surveys and reports. One outcome is the
development of the LOUIS Training Hub, a one-stop-
shop for all training resources. This focus group will
allow LOUIS to debut the training portal to a smaller
audience and discuss what it currently has and what
the membership would like to see. We will also
discuss other training opportunities available to the
membership.

Showin’ Your Stuff: Poster Session Success
Room 324
Poster sessions are a common and popular
presentation format at many kinds of conferences,
and competition for poster session slots is often
strong. This session describes how to create
aesthetically-pleasing posters and how develop
winning proposals. Examples of good and not-so-
good posters will be included, along with tips on
design, printing, transportation, and display. And of
course, the presenters will advise on how to talk
about your poster's topic with conference attendees.

Downloads, Dollars, and Data - Journal
Collections as Databases
Room 322
Evaluating any "Big Deal" content offer from a
publisher can be daunting to the point that many
libraries choose to not consider them at all. Often the
assumption is that it is "too expensive" and the
philosophy is "we only want 50 titles, why buy 700 of
them?" This is a presentation of usage, turn away,
ILL, and cost-per-download statistics to tell the
various good, bad and ugly stories of large journal
package purchases. We will examine title-by-title
and Big Deal scenarios from the smallest to the
largest libraries. We will present a candid view of
pricing structures and some of the calculations
publishers use to discount.

The Weeding Planner
Room 326
Weeding is an integral part of the collection
development cycle and should be done on a
continuous basis, but when LSU Libraries was
tasked with weeding and shifting a large portion of its
collection within a short time period to accommodate
remodeling, a more radical approach was necessary.
Project planning and communication were vital for
efficient workflows and productive work
relationships. Discussing concerns before the
beginning of the project created a plan that took into
account the knowledge and concerns of all
stakeholders, including managers, librarians, and
those working in technical services and stacks
maintenance. Understanding the role and challenges
of each stakeholder allowed us to plan for most
potential problems before they happened. Join us to
find out what we learned about collaboration and
large-scale weeding projects.

The Fault of Our STAR Committee
Room 324
For the last two years, Jennifer Jackson has been
Chair of the STAR (Successful Transitions to
Academic Research) Committee for ACRL-LA. Due
to an array of responsibilities and tasks as the
Learning Commons and Instruction Librarian for Earl
K. Long Library, the ability to increase membership
has been challenging. Desperately wanting to give
the committee the attention it so deserves, she
hopes that this encounter will encourage any and all
librarians who work to promote information literacy at
all levels (K-12 and secondary education) to
participate in the growth and development of the
committee. Presented will be the history and the
mission of the STAR Committee, as well as a five
year outlook plan and discussion for the committee.
Anyone interested in participating and becoming a
new member is encouraged to attend.

Navigating Reclassifying from Dewey to LC:
Reclass Rehash
Main Auditorium A
In November 2011, Ellender Memorial Library at
Nicholls State University began reclassifying its
stack collection from Dewey Decimal to Library of
Congress. This presentation examines the
intervening years' progress from technological,
cataloging, and circulation perspectives, with an
emphasis on how those viewpoints changed with
personnel and resources. As capacity increased in
Technical Services, how did Access Services
respond? What preliminary legwork had to be
completed? What logistics demanded discussion to
preserve patron satisfaction while undergoing this
massive project? How was the reclassification
originally envisioned? What were unexpected
issues? How did the different units respond? This
presentation will address these questions and
generate dialogue about how other universities have
undertaken this project. Through dissecting our own
process, we can receive input as to pitfalls and
guidance as we go forward.
