LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Spring is almost here and I am proud to present the new Spring Volume of LUCY’S Magazine. For this issue I was able to meet and collaborate with the very talented Cibelle Levi, to bring you 14 pages of New York Fashion Week and Paris Couture runway showcasing the latest and greatest designs the fashion world has to offer.

Choosing a cover for LUCY’S has always been one of the most difficult and rewarding aspects of creating each new volume of incredible artwork. I am excited and proud to bring runway to the front and center of LUCY’S for the first time ever! A special thanks to Cibelle for capturing such a beautiful image for our front page.

I’ve always had the urge to wander and explore ever since I was a child. I went on my first trip abroad with a friend when I was 17 years old and since then I try to visit new places every year! So far my favourite place would be Bali. I’ve been there twice and each time I’ve fallen in love with the island, the kindness of the locals, the deep friendships I’ve made, the simple living, the artistic energy, and the incredible food! Oh yes, the food is fantastic. Second to Bali, I really enjoyed Japan and I can’t wait to go back there again.

I believe travel has the capacity to inspire something in everyone. For me, from the moment I am headed to the airport, I suddenly feel released from my “real life” and in that freedom ideas flow. I get excited when I meet new people and see how life passes by in different places, the colours, the art, the music, the energy of a place, the beauty of people, the ugliness too, the philosophies, the manners, the language, the history, all these things feed a soul and I genuinely believe that I am a richer person for the experiences that travel brings. All this is channeled through my life, my existence, through art, writing, understanding, consciousness and so on. - Bella Kotak

RAMONA What is your favorite photo from your portfolio and why? BELLA I have a lot of favourites as each photo has a story behind it, but if I was pressed to pick I would say one of my favourite pieces is, “For now I slumber”. I took this picture in the summer of 2014 with my friend Lulu. It was an impromptu shoot and I’d forgotten to bring my ladder. I climbed a nearby tree to get the angle I wanted and after we got this shot I actually then fell off the branch but thankfully the lens was saved !! A couple of days later I travelled to the US to visit my boyfriend. I edited this picture in the middle of the night by his side in a cute little place in Austin.At the time I was very shy about my editing process so for us to work on this together was a step forward in trust and openness between us. I suspect this is why this piece will always have a special place in my heart.

RAMONA Where do you get your inspiration from?BELLA To be honest, everywhere! I love art, design, illustrations, stories, fairytales, history, paintings, architecture, people, movies, music, nature… I try to have an open mind and let myself be receptive to any ideas floating about. At the moment I am focusing on nature and allowing myself to immerse in it completely as an artist. I have lots of ideas planned for spring in England. It’s my favourite season, this year I really want to go all out and express that.

RAMONA You have such a beautiful eye for colors, it’s very impressive! What is your favorite color and why?BELLA Thank you very much! I’d say currently my favourite colours are in the cooler palette, so soft hues of blues, purples and greens.

RAMONA If you could photograph anyone anywhere, who would it be and where?BELLA If I could photography ANYONE, then the first person would be Angelina Jolie. She is someone I really look up to and truly admire. I’m not sure how exactly I would photograph her but I’m sure flowers and water would be involved ! And maybe lily pads!

RAMONA Where do you see yourself in 5 years?BELLA In 5 years I would like to see myself established as an artist. I’d like to still have a wandering spirit, exploring and photographing the world. Who knows, by then I might be based in the US !

RAMONA What other passions do you have besides photography?BELLA I have lots of passions, too many actually. Art, architecture, interior design to name a few. I also love writing, beauty, and lifestyle choices. I actually recently began a YouTube channel which I’m using as a platform to share all the different things I’m interested in!

RAMONA Have you thought about creating more underwater art?BELLA I have thought about it!! It’s a project I’d love to take on properly at some point. I actually began exploring underwater photography while out in Bali on a creative retreat I organized in 2014. I created a picture called “Let Go”. This piece, along with a few others, was then selected to be part of an exhibition in a gallery in New York! It’s now available to buy via the gallery. I can’t wait to create more underwater art!

RAMONA Which one do you love most, taking photos or editing them afterwards? Or both? Why?BELLA Definitely both! Taking the picture is only half the creative process. A lot of thinking and artistry happens in the post process stage too. I love the energy of the days and moments leading up to a shoot, the preparation, the weather, the light, the location, the model, and when it all comes together, it’s Magic. I think every photographer can understand that feeling, knowing the specialness of what you’re creating whilst in that moment. After the shoot I wait a couple of days before looking at the pictures. This allows me time to detach from those feelings from the shoot and allows room for new emotions during editing. I take pictures apart and put them back together in different ways. Essentially everything I do is to enhance the magic I felt whilst capturing the shot.
