Merry Christmas, Sailors,
I just wanted to write a few notes to keep you informed about what’s going on in the world of CYC sailboat racing.
- The Winter Keelboat Series is off to a slow start. Races were scheduled for the first three weekends of December, however, they were all cancelled because the weather wouldn’t cooperate. Since no races were scored in December, everyone is tied for the lead in the series. The first Winter Keelboat Series races of the New Year will be on Saturday, January 12th. I can’t wait to get out there and do some racing. Hopefully some nice winter weather will draw a big crowd of racers.
- The Keelboat B-Fleet Series will begin on Sunday, March 31st. The B-Fleet Series is designed to be a fun and not-so-competitive way for novice racers to test the waters to see how they like racing. The emphasis is more on learning new skills than on competition. Mistakes are condoned and expected as they present learning opportunities and typically a few laughs and some good stories. If you like, we will try to arrange to have an experienced racer sail with you as a coach on your boat. If you don’t have a boat but want to try racing as a crewmember, we can try to match you up with a skipper that needs some crew. We’ll have two Learn to Race Classes (both are identical, so you don’t need to attend both) at the clubhouse before the series begins. If you are interested in participating in the Keelboat B-Fleet, either as a skipper, crew, or coach, please contact me at [email protected].

- The ever popular Race Committee Class will be offered on Saturday morning, February 16th, at 9:00am in the classroom beneath the back patio. Participants will receive two work hours just for attending as long as you serve your mandatory race committee assignment. This date is a change from the one printed in last month’s Luff Letter. If you’d like to attend, please send me an email at [email protected].
- It would be great for CYC if we could reestablish a Dinghy Racing Fleet. For the last couple of years, dinghy racing at CYC has dropped to nearly nothing. For all practical purposes, at CYC, dinghies are any sailboat smaller than a Holder 20, to include catamarans. A 2019 Dinghy Racing Series is on the schedule and will run on eight Sundays, concurrent with the Keelboat B-Fleet, from March 31st through June 9th. Check the schedule on the website for specific dates. To help give the Dinghy Fleet a boost, I’d appreciate it if someone who has raced or who will race dinghies would volunteer to be the Dinghy Fleet Captain. The job would entail working with the 1st and 2nd Vice Commodores and other dinghy sailors to help encourage and organize Dinghy Fleet participation. Anything that you could think of, within reason, that would encourage dinghy sailors to get their boats out on the water would be greatly appreciated. You’d get work hours for your efforts as well as the satisfaction of having other dinghy sailors to sail and race with.
- On a separate, but related note, Jeff Gamey will be working with several CYC youth sailors and Sail Camp graduates in a new youth sailing league this spring. They may even have a youth regatta. If that happens, don’t be bashful about volunteering to help out Jeff and the youths.
- Lastly, I have to apologize for not getting another edition of the Racer’s Edge articles in this month’s Luff Letter. I’m sure some of you have been waiting on the edge of your seats for my promised article: Mark Rounding: Tacking in the Zone. I’ll get that to you in next month’s Luff Letter. In the meantime, however, I need to correct a mistake in last month’s Racer’s Edge article on Mark Rounding. I wrote, “. . . when rounding marks, the standard rule that boats on starboard tack have right of way over boats on port tack always applies. Nothing trumps that primary rule.” It turns out that’s only true when going to the windward mark. When going downwind to round the leeward mark, there are situations when a boat on starboard tack will have to yield to a boat on port tack. I know at this point your brains are on fire and you are questioning everything that you ever knew about sailboat racing or perhaps you think that I’ve lost my mind. 2018 Commodore’s Gala Thanks to Catherine Trapp and her volunteer staff, the gala was a wonderful affair! Attendees dined on pork tenderloin, cooked by Chef Eva, and yummy sides and desserts, surrounded by festive holiday decorations. Tables were adorned with poinsettias and greenery, and vintage sailing trophies supplied by Johnny and Lauren Ballatin.
Before and after dinner, Tom Sayres’ jazz group, Smooth, played some awesome tunes and provided pages of lyrics for fun sing-a-longs! The incoming and outgoing Board members rallied around the mic to belt out a few songs!!!!
Outgoing Commodore Neil Quigley handed over the reigns to new Commodore, Johnny Ballatin. Neil sported a great big smile while doing that!!!!!!!
And, of course, trophies were awarded! Congratulations to the following racers for their accomplishments-
