LTAB Installation
Louder Than a Bomb (LTAB) is a youth slam poetry competition created in 2001. The UC MetroLAB Design / Build / Research studio teamed up with LTAB to create a temporary performance space for the poetry competitions. Our challenge, collectively, was to empower the artist and enhance the performance without distracting either audience or performer.
Instead of moving from the general to the particular - from abstract idea to detail – we started with full-scale experiments of material assemblies. The feedback that results from the unexpected behaviors, resistances, tolerances, material limits, and serendipitous discoveries can only be understood through a direct engagement with the tools, techniques, and materials of construction. In contrast to the clean virtuality of architectural production in our digital age, this studio sought to uncover the tangible facts of construction — weight, material, weather, touch, smell.

Eden Folly
This proposal is a modern day folly in Cincinnati’s Eden Park evoking the child like, adventurous curiosity in the user, urging them to explore the folly. There are 5 distinct experiences, each a separate element or space, interconnected together, which utilize the users senses to manipulate the perception of the space. This is achieved by manipulating factors such as daylight, form, scale, position, user expectations, and views.
As the user moves through one space and approaches another, they are faced with the decision of which path to take, and that decision determines what they will experience next. Each user experiences the spaces in a different sequence based on the decisions they make regarding their path of travel, so the overall experience will be different for each user.
The folly is located at the top of the highest hill in Eden Park, taking advantage of the incredible views.

Experience EdenExperience Eden is a modern day folly in Cincinnati’s Eden Park evoking the child like, adventurous curiosity in the user, regardless of age, urging them to explore the folly. There are 5 distinct experiences, each a separate element or space, interconnected together, which utilize the users senses to manipulate the perception of the space. This is achieved by manipulating factors such as daylight, form, scale, position, user expectations, and views. Each experience is designed to make the user feel a certain way and evoke certain emotions, and as the user moves through one space and approaches another, they are faced with the decision of which path to take, and that decision determines what they will experience next. Each user experiences the spaces in a different sequence based on the decisions they made regarding their path of travel, so the overall experience will be different for each user. The folly is located at the top of the highest hill in Eden Park, taking advantage of the incredible views nature has offered.
Folly (fol-ee) noun, plural follies
1. A whimsical or extravagant structure built to serve as a conversation piece, lend interest to a view, commemorate a person or event, etc.: found especially in England in the 18th century.
2. A building in the form of a castle, temple, etc, built to satisfy a fancy or conceit, often of an eccentric kind.
3. A very unusual or fancy building that was built in a garden for decoration or amusement in the past.
4. An often extravagant picturesque building erected to suit a fanciful taste.
View Terrace
The View Terrace is an elevated terrace designed to take advantage of the exceptional views of the river and Northern Kentucky offered by Eden Park, rising up to the level of the surrounding trees. A set of stairs winds up the exposed steel structure to take you to the view deck. T he steel structure holds up the floor and roof of the terrace, which cantilever past the structure, and a glass railing encloses the space to create an open, floating feeling while standing in the terrace and allow for the least obstruction to views. This space is also a great place to see the rest of the folly and Eden Park, especially in fall and winter when there are no leaves on the trees. The space is designed to be a peaceful, serene setting to enjoy the view and watch people interact with the other spaces of the folly below. This is a great spot to view the other spaces from a different vantage point.
The reflecting pool is the first space the user encounters and is meant to make the user curious want to explore more. Moving around the shallow pond is like walking on water, and light reflects the rest of the folly off the water when the sun is out, showing the user a different perspective. and There are many paths the user can take, each leading to the different experiences, or spaces, of the folly. There are places the user can sit and relax, or they can keep exploring.
Reflecting Pool
The garden area is a natural, relaxing space with green walls and a tree in the middle. This somewhat private space provides a place for the user to relax eat a quiet lunch. The garden is partially below ground, but open to above so it directs the view to the sky and the surrounding trees. An opening in the wall leads to the underpass space, and a staircase leads up to a bridge above the garden to exit or move to the other spaces.
Garden
The sculpture area is a forceful circular interruption to an otherwise orthogonal form. To enter the space through one of the two entrances, the user must enter between two vertical planes from the reflection pond, where there are stairs leading down to the space. There is no point when the user is entering the space that the can see where they will be going next, or what is in the space, which is intended to make the user curious. The path is not on axis with the circle, but enters in tangent with the circle, requiring the user to make tight turns. In the center is a sculpture and an area to sit and use the space.
Sculpture Area
The underpass leads from the bottom of the view terrace stairs to the garden, then to the reflecting pool. This is the only enclosed space in the folly, and it is very condensed, different from the other spaces. The stone walls protrude up through the ground and the ceiling does extend all the way to the walls, leaving a reveal to let natural light in and creating an interesting, unique environment. At the end of the underpass between the path going to the stairs and the path going to the reflecting pool there is an opening in the wall leading to a water feature with a light well that creates and interesting ambiance in the space.

InspirationDuring my travel, nearly every day consisted of seeing amazing architecture, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures. Being in new places, trying new food, seeing historic architecture, and especially, seeing some of the most well known architecture designed some of the most significant architects in history was incredibly inspiring.
These photos are a selection of a few sites that directly influenced the vision I had with this project.

Clifton Literary Center
A public library located in the heart of Clifton, designed to draw the user in, create moments that encourage curiosity and learning, bring the community together, and add an enjoyable experience to the typical function of a library.
The core concept is executed through the massing that composes the library. Each mass is on one of two angles, determined by the 2 surrounding streets. These angles set the form of the library.
The semi-circular staircase rising through the cylindrical glass structure is the focal point of the library. The stairs create a dynamic path through each primary space and end on the thirdfloorterraceoverlookingthescenicforestacross the street.

Pool House
This pool house, surrounded by trees and a river, takes advantage of it’s natural environment and creates a heightened aquatic experience for the user. The tiered section creates a level of disassociation and complexity upon reaching the top platform, while the bottom extends into the landscape. The pool house uses one water circulation system that is shared between the three pools, connecting with vertical planes of water.

Hibiscus Island Residence
A single family residence on Hibiscus Island in Miami Beach, Florida. This project focuses on creating a seamless transition from outside to inside, taking advantage of the incredible viewsofBiscayneBayandDowntownMiami.Thesecondfloormaster bedroom completely opens up to the views, without sacrificingtheoutdoorlivingspacebelowonthissmalllotbyfloatingoverthepool.
My role in this project was collaborating with the project manager to take it though the design development process, creating the 3D model and construction documents, and contributing to the creation of the renderings.

Mountain Guest House
This design is for a small guest house in the mountains of Truckee, California near Lake Tahoe. This house is a contemporary take on the traditional cabin, creating an outdoor living space that’s as cozy as the indoor space. The outdoor living area takes advantage of the amazing weather Tahoe is famous for in the summer.
Iwasfortunatetoseethisprojectthroughstarttofinish, working on design development, CD’s, 3D model, rendering, and finally being able to walk through thehouse during and after construction to see it come to life.
