37th Annual

What a year in Sports! A Triple Crown winner after more than three decades; the Yankees fail to make the cut while the Cubs make the playoffs and the Mets get to the World Series (thanks, Kansas City); a Super Bowl that crowns a king as he retires; a changing-of-the-guard at the Masters; can anyone beat Curry and the Warriors; and the Rangers almost make it to the Stanley Cup (again).

As you can probably figure out, I’m a New York sports fan and I’m also the President of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 37th running of the Sports Emmy Awards!

It is with great joy that we honor tonight’s many outstanding nominees who accept the challenge to find new and exciting ways to engage the sports viewing audience each year. This has been a banner year at the Sports Emmy Awards with almost 1,000 entries in 40 categories with more than 300 judges participating. The high-level of achievement in so many categories is a testament to the depth and strength of our industry and as a

reminder of the dedication and commitment that each

nominee brings to every game, each day. It is that perseverance

that we honor tonight.I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the

Sports Steering Group for their contributions in making tonight’s event a success and very special thanks to our very dedicated National Staff for their efforts in recognizing tonight’s talented nominees.

Enjoy the game!

As the Chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 37th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards at Jazz at a t Lincoln Center’s Frederick P Rose Hall.

We are here tonight to salute our nominees, those who continue to advance our medium, who continue to say yes to the challenges of each game and who allow us to experience the myriad world of sports television in new and exciting ways. The quality of sports television continues to surprise and astonish us as the coverage available to the consumer in multiple formats grows exponentially. We are truly in a world where we can watch anything going on anywhere, at any time, on an every-growing number of devices.

In this new world of sports television, the audience has been taken from the sidelines and put into the very center of the action, no matter what the sport, no matter where in the world it might be. This combination of innovative technology coupled with the talent of those individuals that bring us their knowledge and insight into each play continues to raise the bar on what sports television can be.

It seems appropriate that tonight we are honoring one of those

individuals who has left his mark, or should I say voice, on an almost countless number of Sports categories across his more than forty-year career, Verne Lundquist. Whether it be the Olympics, Golf, Football, Basketball, Track & Field, Swimming, Diving, and just about every other sport known to man, Verne Lundquist has brought a new and unique style to every game he touched. It is with great joy that we honor him tonight with our Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports.

There are many individuals to thank, beginning with our Sports judges, who took of their time and talent to evaluate the entries. It is their efforts that allow us to celebrate these nominees and their accomplishments this evening.

In addition, I would like to thank our Sports Steering Committee, led by David Levy, for their support of our National Staff in the planning and execution of tonight’s program. To our National Awards Committee and its Chair, Linda Giannecchini, I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to honoring excellence. And finally, I would like to thank the staff of the National Academy, especially our Senior Vice President of Sports, Stephen J Ulrich, and Stephen Head, Director, Sports for their countless hours of hard work to make this evening’s event a success.

W hen fans recognize him in airports or restaurants, they usually don’t call Verne Lundquist by name.

Instead, golf fans, for instance, will greet Lundquist by letting out a hearty, “Yes Sir,” parroting his famous call of Jack Nicklaus’ birdie putt during the 1986 Masters. Or they might recall a moment of more recent vintage, and do a throat-clearing bellow of “In your life,” for his tagline to Tiger Woods’ famous chip shot in the 2005 Masters.

“How many times has someone said ‘Yes Sir’ to me?” Lundquist said. “Millions.”

If Lundquist is walking through Southeastern Conference country, he is likely to hear--with extra gusto from Auburn fans--“An answered prayer,” for the perfect way he summed up Chris Davis’ 109-yard touchdown run on a missed field goal, giving Auburn an improbable victory over Alabama in 2014.

Then there’s “Puts it up…Yes!” for his call of Christian Laettner’s winning shot in the epic 1992 Duke-Kentucky game; and “Bless his heart” for his description of Dallas’ Jackie Smith dropping a sure touchdown pass in the 1979 Super Bowl.

All those memorable lines serve as Lundquist’s ultimate calling card.

“If an announcer can have one or two calls like that in his career, you’re fortunate,” said CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus. “Verne has had 5 or 6 that you’ll always remember. It’s really remarkable.”

Those calls, which rank among the greatest in sports broadcasting history, are a big reason why the National Academy of Television of Arts and Sciences is awarding Lundquist with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th Annual Sports Emmys.

In announcing the award, Bob Mauro, NATAS president, said Lundquist “is one of the most iconic voices in sports television.”

“I can’t imagine anyone more deserving of this award,” McManus said.

When McManus informed him of the award, Lundquist was speechless.

“I had no idea,” Lundquist said. “I was flabbergasted. I was really overwhelmed by the whole idea, and I still am.”

The award honors a 53-year career that has seen Lundquist, 75, demonstrate an impressive versatility in excelling in a myriad of assignments, ranging from golf to figure skating; he was the call for the famous Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding during CBS’ coverage of the 1994 Olympics. During recent years, Lundquist has distinguished himself in working with Gary Danielson on

CBS’ coverage of SEC football and he remains a fixture on play-by-play during the NCAA basketball tournament.

The essence of Lundquist’s success is a warm, affable approach to a telecast that very much mirrors the man himself. Danielson says he never met a person who has “so many dear friends.”

Lundquist doesn’t overwhelm a telecast; rather, he complements the action on the field. He is what can be best described as a comfortable listen, a high compliment. McManus calls his play-by-play “soothing.”

Simply put, Lundquist invites the viewers to join him for a few hours.

“You can’t practice or learn what Verne is good at,” Danielson said. “He is tremendously generous with the microphone and has that unique ability of knowing what needs to be done. He has that likability. That comes across to the viewer.”

None of it would have happened if Lundquist had used his voice in a different way. He actually went to college planning to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a preacher. However, he quickly realized it wasn’t going to be his calling. After taking a job with an Austin (Tex.) radio station, he broke the news to his father.

“When dad found out one of the perks (of the radio job) was getting four tickets to the Texas Longhorn football games, he said, ‘the Lord works in mysterious ways,’” Lundquist said.

Lundquist eventually moved on to Dallas, serving as the sports director of WFAA-TV for 16 years. At one point, Tex Schramm talked him out of accepting a position in Los Angeles. The legendary Cowboys executive convinced Lundquist he had a better chance landing a national network job as the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys.

“He said, ‘You’re never going to get a chance to do playbyplay in Los Angeles,’” Lundquist recalled. “Tex goes, ‘Perhaps you’ve heard of Dick Enberg? You might have heard of Vin Scully?

5

There’s this guy named Chick Hearn.’”Schramm was right, and Lundquist did do some network work

with ABC during the 1970s. The highlight for Lundquist was getting to work soccer games with Jim McKay, who served as an important role model.

“If I had to pick one man whose style and personality and character I would hope to emulate, it would be Jim’s,” Lundquist said.” I just admired him on so many levels, not the least of which is I think he’s the best storyteller I’ve ever known in sports television. When he was the host of ‘Wide World of Sports,’ I just thought you could not invest 90 minutes on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in a better way than to spend it in his company.”

From McKay, Lundquist started to learn the art of being minimalist in the booth. Less can be more if you choose the right words. That point was further driven home when he joined CBS in 1982.

One of his first CBS assignments was to work golf tournaments for Frank Chirkinian. The legendary golf producer has strict mantra for his announcers: Don’t tell the viewers what they just saw on the screen.

“Frank had said, ‘If I ever hear you say, he made it, I’ll fire you,’” Lundquist said.

Good thing Chirkinian phrased it that way, because in Lundquist’s first tournament, he blurted out “he missed it” on a crucial putt down the stretch.

“Chirkinian says, ‘You stupid Scandinavian SOB. If I tell you not to tell me he made it, can you not deduce on your own you’re never supposed to say he missed it?’” said

Lundquist, letting out a hearty chuckle at the memory.Lundquist says he never made the mistake again. The lesson

had long-time ramifications for him. It ultimately goes to the heart of why Lundquist has been able to produce so many memorable calls.

Lundquist sees his role in those big moments as “being a caption writer.”

“I think brevity is at the soul of all that,” Lundquist said.It is an art that takes considerable talent, not to mention

refinement through many years in the business. Time and time again, Lundquist is able to select just the right lines to put the punctuation mark on indelible moments in sports history.

“If a kid returns a missed field goal 109 yards, you just have to be conscious of what’s going on in front of you and try and make an appropriate statement,” Lundquist said. “You can’t really be prepared for it. You’ve just got to adjust and react to what happens in front of you, complement the action on the field.”

Few announcers ever have done it better. “It’s something that he’s able to come up with phrases that

people remember,” McManus said. “He always manages to find that sweet spot. The fact is, he’s very, very good at his craft.”

McManus changed the trajectory of Lundquist’s career in 2000. He moved him from CBS’ No. 2 play-by-play for the NFL to lead voice for its SEC package.

McManus recalls it was “a tough call to make.” McManus, though, wanted an established voice for the SEC games in Lundquist.

Lundquist remembers

reluctantly telling his wife, Nancy, “Pack your bags, we’re going to Tuscaloosa.” It’s funny how things work out. Lundquist jumped on board just as the SEC began a run of dominance that saw CBS garner the highest ratings in college football.

“It turned out to be the greatest professional move of my life,” Lundquist said.

Indeed, it has. Lundquist loves being in SEC stadiums on a college football Saturday, especially for the big games. Danielson contends his partner’s work on the SEC helped elevate him to another level. For once, sports viewers got to see him as the No. 1 guy.

An Answered PrayerAuburn pulled off a miracle win over Alabama when Chris Davis returned

a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown. Lundquist punctuated the moment by saying, “Touchdown, Auburn! An answered prayer!”

Bless his heartIn 1979 Super Bowl, Dallas tight end Jackie Smith dropped a sure touchdown pass in

the endzone. Lundquist, with the Cowboys radio call, said, “Bless his heart, he’s got to be the sickest man in America.”

Lundquist: “There’s a background story to that I think is significant. On Wednesday night of that week, we went live (his Dallas Ch. 8 sports report) from Tex and Marty Schramm’s yacht, or boat. I had asked Jackie Smith to be my guest that night. I asked him as part of the conversation, having been made aware that it was going to be his last game, what would be the most satisfying way he could end the career? He said, if I could have a meaningful catch and a victory over Pittsburgh, that would be everything.

“So when he dropped the pass, the immediate thought I had was back to that Wednesday night conversation. Here he was on his back in the end zone and the ball was next to him. And so I said what occurred to me, that he’s just got to be sick.”said as, ‘In your life, have you ever seen anything like this,’ because I hadn’t. That was just an honest expression of emotion for what had just happened.

Lundquist Famous CallsVerne Lundquist discusses his most memorable calls.

Yes SirLundquist put the exclamation mark on Jack Nicklaus’ incredible victory at the 1986 Masters. When

Nicklaus made a birdie putt at 17, Lundquist made the moment indelible by saying an emphatic, “ Yes Sir! ”

Lundquist: “It’s still my favorite afternoon of any sporting event after 53 years. I’ve seen it maybe 7,800 times, and it finally occurred to me what helped make the call memorable. As I’m saying, “Yes sir,” Jack is reacting with a pump of his arms, and it’s almost in synchronicity with the call.

“So he emphatically underwrote the “Yes, sir” with his own gestures. And I really think that enhanced people’s memory of that moment.”

appreciation from fans of what’s he’s done and how good he is,” Danielson said.

Lundquist is humbled by the recognition from the NATAS. He is thrilled that McKay’s son, McManus, will present him with the award. In addition to McKay and others, he plans to thank Frank Glieber, the long-time announcer, and Dallas TV executive Dave Lane for the impact they had on him.

Lundquist realizes he is in the fourth quarter of his career. However, he isn’t planning on retiring just yet. He hopes to continue for at least a couple of more years.Knowing Lundquist, there still is time for another memorable call before he packs it up. Another phrase to add to his collection.

Looking back, Lundquist recalled an encounter he had with Mike Krzyzewski in 2007 that put it all in perspective for him. His colleagues informed the Duke coach that Lundquist had been selected to be in the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.“I said to Mike, ‘I think DukeKentucky might have had something to do with that,’” Lundquist said. “He looked at me with a little bit of a grin, and he said, ‘OK, I understand what you say, but it’s been my experience that if you are provided with the opportunity, then you need to capitalize on it, and you have.’“I’ve been blessed. There’s no doubt about it. And thankfully, one of the reasons I’m getting this incredible (Lifetime Achievement Award) is that I’ve been equal to the task.”n

Puts it up The Duke-Kentucky game in the 1992 NCAA tournament featured Christian Laettner’s last second game-winning shot. Lundquist simply said, “Puts it up…YES!!!”

Lundquist: “For a split second, I remembered I announced Grant Hill’s birth on a Dallas TV station. His father, Calvin, and I were good friends. Now here’s this guy (Grant) about to throw in the pass. I thought, ‘Oh my God.’ It was very personal to me.

“You hope you get the call right. Mine wasn’t particularly brilliant. I channeled my inner Marv Albert and yelled ‘Yes!’ Somebody once asked if I was proud of that call? I’m proud I didn’t muck it up. It wasn’t an innovative piece of broadcasting, but it captured the moment.”

Lundquist Famous Calls

In Your LifeIn the 2005 Masters, Tiger Woods sinks an impossible chip shot on the 16th hole in the final round. The ball literally sits

teetering on the hole for 1.8 seconds before it drops in. Lundquist nails the emotion, saying: “Oh Wow! In your life, have you ever seen anything like this?

Lundquist: “That’s 40 years of experience. I was reacting to what I saw. What I said was, ‘In your life, have you ever seen anything like this,’ because I hadn’t. That was just an honest expression of emotion for what had just happened.

“I actually had people ask, ‘Did you plan that?’ Yeah sure, if the ball sits on the cup for 1.8 seconds, I’m going to say, ‘Oh wow.’”

In separate interviews, the Alberts share--with considerable amuse-ment--a line they hear over and over.

“People come up to me all the time and say, ‘Your brother Kenny really does a good job,” Marv said.

“I know he loves that,” Kenny said. “It makes him feel younger.”

Indeed, Marv likes to go one step further. “I always say Kenny is my older brother,” he said.

Let the record show that Marv and Kenny Alberts are making his-tory as the first father-and-son, not brother, tandem to be nominated for a Sports Emmy in the play-by-play category.

Kenny actually had just hung up

with his father when he heard the news. He quickly called back to tell him about the nominations.

“It was surreal to look at the list and see not only my name, but his too,” Kenny said. “It’s been really exciting for both of us.”

Being self-deprecating, Marv said, “We have a lot of family voting on the board.”

Then the proud father added, “It’s really a huge thrill. I couldn’t be happier for Kenny. He really de-serves it.”

It is a considerable achievement for a father and son to be at the peak of their profession at the same time. It also explains why it is understand-able that many people think they

are brothers. Both Alberts have been on the

scene for a long time. Kenny, 48, has been a national presence for more than two decades for his work with Fox Sports and NBCSN. He is well on his way to rivaling the longev-ity of Marv, who shows no signs of slowing down at age 74.

It was natural for Kenny to go into the family business. Marv’s broth-ers, Al and Steve, also are play-by-play men.

“When he grew up, it was like he had a broadcast clinic,” Marv said.

Marv recalled young Kenny started keeping stats at the age of 6. He would turn down the sound of a game on TV and then call it

Undoubtedly, there will be people who will make a common mistake when

they learn that Marv and Kenny Albert both were nominated for a Sports Emmy under the category of Outstanding Sports Personality—Play-by-play.

into a tape recorder. Kenny made up his own radio station called WKGA. Even though his son was shy as a kid, Marv remembered whenever an athlete visited the Al-bert home, Kenny would take him to his room to record an interview.

Kenny still has fond memories on going on trips with his father and being by his side when he broadcast games.

“I told him when I got to college, I had such a head start on every-one else,” Kenny said. “Everything kind of just sunk in, like osmosis. I couldn’t have had a better teacher.”

The education proved to be in-valuable. Lesson No. 1: Preparation.

“That was the biggest thing I learned from him,” Kenny said. “He is a fanatic about preparation. I could remember being in those hotel rooms and he’d be up at 1-2 in the morning writing the final notes in his charts.”

Kenny then took that knowl-edge and started his own broad-cast career. His first job was doing play-by-play of minor league hockey in Baltimore in the early 1990s. He calls it a turning point in leaving New York for the first time.

“It was a tremendous oppor-tunity to forge my own identity,” Kenny said.

Marv has his own special memory of Kenny’s days in Baltimore. He remembered the first time he sat next to his son in the booth, getting a close-up view of him calling a game.

“I said, ‘He has it. He really has it,’” Marv said.

It didn’t take long for other people to notice that Kenny had it. He was one of Fox Sports’ first hires when it acquired the

NFL in 1994.There is little doubt that having

the Albert name helped Kenny get in the door. But it certainly didn’t keep him there.

“The names helps, but then you have to prove yourself,” Marv said. “If you don’t have it, nobody will hire you. It was obvious that Kenny was really good.”

Besides excelling at the craft, the other thing Kenny has in common with his father is a workhorse men-tality. You will be hard-pressed to find a pair of announcers who work more sports and maintain such a back-breaking schedule; In fact, Kenny currently calls all four major sports.

In April, Kenny had this stretch

during a week: Tuesday, a Knicks game for MSG; Wednesday, Rang-ers game for radio; Thursday, NHL playoff game in Miami for NBCSN; Saturday, baseball game in Boston for Fox; Monday, NHL playoff game in Philadelphia for NBCSN.

“(Marv) likes to joke about my schedule,” Kenny said. “But he for-gets what he did back in the day.”

Indeed, Kenny can recall accom-panying his father when he did play-by-play on four games in two days. In addition to calling Knicks and Rangers games, Marv also did nightly sports reports at 6 and 11 in New York.

Kenny says it must be in “the Al-bert DNA.” Marv believed the work

ethic goes back to his father, Max, who put in long hours at the grocery store he owned.

“He set the tone for my broth-ers and me,” Marv said.

That tone helped Marv win five Sports Emmys. Kenny, meanwhile, was thrilled to re-ceive a nomination this year.

“Just to be one of the five fi-nalists feels like a win,” Kenny said.

Indeed, regardless of who is the eventual winner of this year’s Sports Emmy for play-by-play, both Alberts feel like they already have claimed the ultimate prizes when it comes to the incredible paths of their careers.

“Some people work jobs that they really don’t like,” Kenny said. “I never felt like what I do is work. I feel so fortunate to be able to do something I love, and I know my dad feels the same way. He still loves what he’s doing.” n
