Perhaps a book about that form of prayer would simply be entitled, ‘What?’. Listening prayer may be the most important – and most overlooked – form of prayer for the church and all the baptized, Spirit-sealed people of God at times like our time. We live in times when it is so easy to lose heart, when so much of what we hear, experience, and feel is about loss, decline, diminishment, and uncertainty. Listening prayer begins with questions like: What is God’s narrative—God’s story—about the present and the future? Or, better, listening prayer begins like this: Gracious God, what are you saying to us, to me, in this challenging time? What are you up to? What needs to change in my life, so that I may follow faithfully? Such listening prayer begins with deep, slow, careful, exploratory listening to scripture and tradition. We listen for both for the promises of God that have sustained and guided God’s people through the centuries and for the stories of what God’s deliverance looked like when the promises were fulfilled. Here’s a hint: it was seldom what God’s people first imagined it would be when they started listening! Listening prayer arises from hearts and minds that learn to listen below the surface of the routine humdrum of daily life for the God who is present and speaking right now, in this moment. It calls us to intentionally let go of what we think should happen and open ourselves to whatever God’s Spirit may be saying and through whom God may be saying it. After all, God often speaks through those through whom we least expect God to speak, as old Balaam discovered [see Numbers 22:22-35]. Listening prayer invites us to let go of the need to always speak and, instead, to be quiet for a time, to create “empty” and expectant space in our hearts, our days, our life together for God to fill with God’s Word by the power of God’s Spirit for the sake of God’s renewing work in us and in our world. As we embark on the season of Advent and into a new church year—making our way to Bethlehem, anticipating God coming among us ‘in the flesh’—may we remember to listen. Pray Always. Do Not Lose Heart.

Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. (Luke 18:1)

Pray always. Do not lose heart.

What is the intimate connection between these two needs (not commands) as Luke portrays them? Is prayer, constant prayer,

prayer in all situations, a key to avoid losing heart? Does losing heart, becoming discouraged or disillusioned, become a barrier to active prayer?

And, by the way, how is your prayer life – and that of our faith community – these days in which it is so, so tempting to give up and give in, to lose heart?

In her helpful book, Help, Thanks, Wow, author Anne Lamott suggests that these three words capture the three essential prayers. In many ways, I think that she is right. From Genesis to Revelation, scripture is filled with cries for help, expressions of gratitude, and wide-eyed wonder at the works of God.

Yet, I wonder whether we need to be reminded that “praying always” also suggests listening, the kind of listening that any life-giving, relationship-growing conversation requires.? Perhaps a book about that form of prayer would simply be entitled, ‘What?’.

Listening prayer may be the most important – and most overlooked – form of prayer for the church and all the baptized, Spirit-sealed people of God at times like our time. We live in times when it is so easy to lose heart, when so much of what we hear, experience, and feel is about loss, decline, diminishment, and uncertainty.

Listening prayer begins with questions like: What is

God’s narrative—God’s story—about the present and the future?

Listen, dear people of God: Pray always and do not lose heart!

Are you tired of all of the TV and radio commercials, newspaper adds,

and displays throughout stores for the buy, buy, and buy more toxic attitude?

I have always been offended by the commercialization of Christmas and the idea that it’s perfectly fine to go deeply into debt for more trinkets and “toys” than we need. The whole idea of Christmas seems to get totally lost through the retail industry and our desire to be spoiled rotten. I understand that much of the retail market relies (so they say) on this season to swell their coffers enough to ride through the rest of the year. We understand the world revolves around marketing,

jobs, and all of the needs to keep the “balls in the air”. But then we see retail CEO’s and other top officials commanding huge six figure salaries, and wonder where does this stop.

That’s where we as Christians come in, showing the world that this is all about a child born for us. We can celebrate His humble beginning without all of the commercial rhetoric. Knowing that God gave us this incredible gift of His Son, without quid pro quo, is so wonderful. My take is to love more, spend less, and feel a whole lot better about it. Find your joy in Christmas with family and friends by celebrating Christ’s birth!

are made, and some of techniques used to put them together. Thank you to all who came and helped with refreshments.

W.E.L.C.A. and the Youth Group have joined together and adopted 4 families for Christmas. The first week of December you will see a Christmas tree with paper Angels indicating a wish list item. If you care to help make a less fortunate family a very Merry Christmas, just pick an Angel off the tree, purchase the item and either wrap it yourself or bring it to church and the youth will wrap it for you. PLEASE ATTACH THE ANGEL TO THE ITEM. Also, we are collecting food for these families, so if you are able to buy a few things to make their Christmas a bit brighter, you may drop off non- perishable food at the church. For further information please contact church secretary, Linda Wilson (882-3020) or Trace Angel (721-5495)

Our next W.E.L.C.A. gathering will be our cookie exchange and Bingo party on Saturday December 14th at 1pm. We are hoping you and as many friends and family will join us for a fun-filled afternoon. There will be prizes and refreshments. I am asking W.E.L.C.A. members to bring an ornament to be given away as prizes for the Bingo games. There will also be a couple of surprises for everyone in attendance. their achievements and their goals and display some of their beautiful quilts. There will be light refreshments. A sign-up sheet will be placed on the WELCA bulletin for anyone who wishes to bring something. This is open to everyone. Please invite your friends and neighbors. Let’s show our support to the group that does so much for our Veterans.

The LEE Grouporiginally, “Life Enrichment for Everyone” now commonly defined as “Lutheran Eager Eaters’ meets the first Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and is opened to everyone, especially the ‘grandparent generation’ to meet on a regular basis for friendship and fellowship.

Our next meeting is December 5th and our host will be Linda Wilson who will provide Ham for the main course. Our January 2nd meeting will be hosted by Ruth Fitzgerald. We ask, if you are able, to bring a passing dish of your choice, potatoes, casseroles, vegetables, salads, breads and desserts etc. for each month. Questions? Please consider joining St. Paul’s ‘Stitchers’ quilting group. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Friendship Hall, and EXPERIENCE IS NOT REQUIRED. They will be happy to show you what needs to be done. The ‘Stitchers’ are busy working on all sorts of projects. They make beautiful quilts and make and deliver lap robes to various senior assistant living homes and Convalescent centers here in Carson City. The seniors are so happy and appreciative in receiving these gifts.

The Stitchers wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Stewardship NewsAs we approach the holidays, we have time with our families, giving thanks at Thanksgiving and sharing gifts & decorations of Christmas, then all of a sudden, we begin a New Year.

Do we wish we didn’t have so much to do, like shopping & preparing for upcoming company etc?

There was a wonderful article in the local newspaper written by Teri Vance. The article focused on ‘Gratitude’. If we give thanks to God, expressing our gratitude, wouldn’t we get a calmness allowing us to feel God’s presence even more?

During the holiday season, may we give thanks for the people in our lives, expressing love and generosity to all we come in contact with each day.

We pray that our eyes will be open to see the real wonders of the season.

May God bless you and yours. Stewardship Committee-

St. Paul’s Lutheran Family CHRISTIAN EDUCATIONA Blessed Holiday season to all from the Sunday School! We are planning our annual program to be presented on Sunday, Dec. 22 at the 10:30 service.

The program is based on the story of Christmas as seen through the children’s eyes with some new songs and readings. We have Vicki Hamilton accompanying us

on the piano and Deanna Fine on the guitar. The children have practiced during Sunday school time for several weeks and are looking forward to performing this short play for the congregation during the service. There are several people to thank

for their efforts in making this possible as well as the Youth group for putting on a special coffee hour after the service. We will have some special surprises at the coffee hour so we hope you can all attend.

I would additionally like to thank our “top-notch” teaching staff for their GREAT HELP as always in any occasion and all year long for doing such a good job.

They are Shelley Stevens, Judy Webster, and Ruth Fitzgerald. I have had a lot of challenges myself this past year and know that I never have to worry as these ladies always are there for me.
