Manion [email protected] If you’re curious about the art of pottery, you can satisfy your desire for knowledge during the 2015 Tampa Bay Tour de Clay. This is the eighth Tour de Clay, which is always held during the second weekend in December. It’s an event that gives visitors a chance to see potters in action at four pot- tery studios and the opportunity to experience a kiln opening at each. “It creates a situation where people can come in and talk to the artist,” said Jack Boyle of San Antonio Pottery, owner of one of the studios on the tour. All four of the studios are hosting their kiln opening on Dec. 12. The first kiln opening is at 9 a.m., at Pottery Boys Studio, 30 Bogie Lane in Palm Harbor. The next opening is at noon at Hidden Lake Pottery, 16705 Hutchison Road in Odessa. Then, there will be an opening at 2 p.m., at Wellman & Welsch Pottery, 17202 Whirley Road in Lutz. And, finally, there will be a 4 p.m. open- ing at San Antonio Pottery in San Antonio, at 11903 Curley Street. “It is rare that people get a chance to see a kiln opening,” said Glenn Woods of Pottery Boys in Palm Harbor. “Potters work for weeks to create enough pieces to fill their kiln. When it’s finally time to open the kiln, after days of firing, it’s always exciting to see, because the artist never knows exactly how a piece will turn out, or how a glaze will look, until the kiln is opened.” He likens the experience of opening a kiln to that of opening presents on Christmas morning. “Sometimes you get a shiny new bike, and other times you get socks and under- wear,” he said. After a piece is taken from the kiln, it is passed around to those gathered, so they can see and feel it. Sometimes, the newly fired piece is still warm. “We talk about the results,” Woods said. Sometimes, the effects are intentional; some- times, they’re a surprise. The tour gives people a greater under- standing of the art of pottery,Woods said. “I think it’s really important to see that a piece of handmade pottery isn’t just anoth- er pot sitting on a shelf, that’s been made in a factory. Pasco County planners are reviewing azoning request for about 32 acres owned byHighway 54/56 LLC. The sale of the proper-ty is pending approval of the project.

Lutz businessman Carl Anderson is thecompany’s manager, according to staterecords.

The site — named Brightwork Crossing— is north of State Road 54 and State Road56, and west of County Road 54, also knownas Wesley Chapel Boulevard. The site is be-hind the Walgreen’s drugstore and nearbygas station, on both sides of Old State Road54.

candle, are lit together. There are other traditions as well.A spinning top called a dreidel is used

to play a game, often with gelt, which arecoin-shaped chocolates. Serving latkes, which are potato pancakes, is another tradi-tion.

There are songs and melodies, prayersand a recounting of the miracle, as well.

The sharing of those activities is whatmakes Hanukkah special, Weiss explained.

“It’s all about the story, it’s all about re-membering,” he said.

Weiss, now 58 and living in WesleyChapel, has his own memories ofHanukkah. He grew up in Edison, NewJersey, in an area with a large Jewish com-munity. So large, in fact, it was nicknamed“Hanukkah Hill.” Some of his fondest mem-ories include when his grandmother (whowas a Holocaust survivor) wouldmake latkes. Hers were a bit different, being made with squash instead of pota-toes. He also remembers using a specialmenorah that he made with his father andbrother when he was 10.

Even though those celebrations oc-curred decades ago, the traditions survivein his family. He still has his grandmother’srecipe, and the Weiss’ enjoy squash latkeseach year. And, the menorah he used as achild still resides in his parents’ home.Seeing it brings back special memories, hesaid.

It’s not unusual for adults to rekindlefond memories of Hanukkah from theirown youth, Weiss said.

Kol Ami has a special Hanukkah celebra-tion each year that’s open to the public, onthe third night of the holiday. While it’s atime for celebration, it also conjures up abit of nostalgia.

“We have a lot of seniors here that, intheir past when they had their holidays, they remember the good times with theirparents,” Weiss explained. “When we havethe candle-lighting ceremony, sometimesthere are tears, because they rememberhow good it was when they hadHanukkah.”

Today, children still have it pretty good, with presents usually opened on each of

the eight nights. But, like Christmas, theholiday goes beyond material gifts. It’sabout fond memories, continuing traditionsand spending time with loved ones.

“All Jewish holidays are always aboutfamily. No matter what holiday it is, it’s allabout family,” Weiss said.

before settling on the design and type of im-provements for the intersection. The study’scompletion date is spring 2016.

Area business owners and the CentralPasco Chamber of Commerce had hopedfor additional opportunities to discuss thematter.

On Oct. 30, the chamber sent a letter tothe state agency requesting a public work-shop. Pasco County Commissioner MikeMoore also brought up the request at aNov. 12 meeting of the county’sMetropolitan Planning Organization.

State transportation officials were at thatmeeting to present the 2015 priority list forcounty road projects.

However, they said the public hearing isthe only meeting on the schedule.

“Sometimes with workshops you havemore time to discuss an issue than at a pub-lic hearing,” said Elayne Bassinger, presidentof the Central Pasco Chamber. And, areabusiness owners, she said, “want an oppor-tunity to speak.”

No one doubts that improvements areneeded at the heavily travelled intersection.

According to the state transportation de-partment, the intersection’s crash rate ishigher than the state average.

About 99,000 vehicles per day travelthrough the intersection, but by 2040, statehighway officials predict an estimated208,000 vehicles per day.

Both highways are part of the county’sevacuation route, and they also are regionalroadways for trucks that deliver goods toand from Tampa International Airport, PortTampa Bay and Port Manatee.

One alternative would cost about $160million in total, including about $91 million

for more than 70 acres of rights of way.More than 40 parcels, including existingbusinesses at the intersection, would be af-fected. About 24 businesses could berelocated, according to state transportationdata.

The new interchange would providefour through lanes on U.S. 41 in each direc-tion, two through lanes at-grade and twoelevated lanes on State Road 54.

The other alternative would cost about$180 million in total, including about $50million for nearly 30 acres of rights of way.About 20 parcels would be involved, butonly six businesses would be relocated, ac-cording to state data.

Under this option, no additional laneswould be added to U.S. 41, and turn laneswould not change. There would be twothrough lanes at-grade and two elevatedthrough lanes on State Road 54.

Draft documents describing the projectare available to the public through Dec. 21at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, at 2818Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes. They alsocan be viewed at the state transportationdepartment’s District Seven office at 11201N. McKinley Drive in Tampa.

Statements, and exhibits and oral com-ments, will be accepted at the hearing. Also, all exhibits or statements must bepostmarked or emailed no later than Dec.21 to be part of the official public hearingrecord. A court reporter also will be avail-able at the hearing for one-on-onecomments.

SCORES & SCHEDULE

PHSC volleyball reaches national tournament, again

Sources: MaxPreps, various

By Michael [email protected]

The Pasco-Hernando State College LadyQuistas always participate in their regionaltournament under head coach KimWhitney. In her 12 years at the helm, they’venever failed to qualify with a .500 or betterrecord.

But, they don’t always win theirregion and qualify for the NJCAA Division IInational tournament. Whitney’steams had done it five times. And after a 1-3start, and eventually a 5-4 mark, this year’steam didn’t look like the kind of squad thatwould make it six national appearances.

But, Whitney knew better.“If they don’t see that tough competi-

tion, then it’s not going to really help themunderstand where they need to be,” she saidabout the early part of the season.

The coach deliberately scheduled chal-lenging opponents right off the bat, in orderto provide good tests and get a feel forwhere they stood against skilled teams.Taking some early losses can drive a team towork as a group and improve, Whitney said.

And, that’s what happened with the LadyQuistas.

After coming out of those early contestswith a few wins and plenty of determina-tion, they ramped things up as the seasonwore on. The squad went on a five-matchwinning streak. It won 11 of their final 16regular-season matches and easily qualifiedfor its tournament.

The early season challenges paid off forthe team in North Carolina, site of their re-gional tournament for District P. Theyknocked off Brunswick, Cape Fear andCatawba Valley without dropping a singleset, and breezed into the national tourna-ment for the second straight year.

“We were really at the moment in ourseason where we were peaking,” Whitneysaid.

Then, it was on to Arizona for the nation-al tournament. The Lady Quistas played

well, but ran into a tough Lincoln Land teamin their opening match and fell in four sets, eliminating them from the championshipbracket.

The team had its chances in the match,Whitney said, but a few errors at inoppor-tune times prevented it from gainingmomentum. After an opening-set victory, thesquad dropped the next three and was rele-gated to the consolation bracket.

At that point, many disappointed teams

would simply pack it in and bow out withanother loss. But, the Lady Quistas bouncedback with a five-set victory over MuskegonCommunity College before losing toNortheastern Oklahoma A&M and finishingat 11th place in the tournament.

Winning a consolation game might notseem like a big deal, but Whitney has beenthere enough times to know it matters. Itdemonstrates perseverance and determina-tion and it gives younger players more

experience, which is importantas they take on leadership rolesnext season.

Players also showed theircoach that they weren’t goingdown without a fight.

“They still fought through, and they pushed themselves towin that next match,” Whitneysaid.

Next season’s matches willfeature new players, as they doevery year. As a two-year college, athlete turnover is a regular partof the game. But, with some tal-ented players returning nextseason, the Lady Quistas willbuild around a nucleus of expe-rienced athletes. Whitneymentioned Nadine Mattmannand Danielle Christian as a pairof defensive standouts who willbe part of the school’s run for athird-straight national tourna-ment appearance.

She also credited her assis-tant, Brian Kachurak, for runningthings in the early part of theseason while she was on mater-nity leave. The coaching staffand the players did their jobs, al-lowing Whitney to make asmooth transition back to thesideline, and eventual tourna-ment victories.

As a competitive coach whobrought the school a national

title back in 2010, Whitney never likes tolose. But, she’s proud of her players andwhat they were able to accomplish on thecourt, and is glad to have reached the na-tional tournament in back-to-back seasons.

“In coaching and in sports, in general, youalways want to win. You want to get to thepoint where you’re at the end,” Whitney said.“But, I think that looking back, looking at ourteam and looking at what we went through,an 11th place finish is pretty good for us.”

PHOTO COURTESY OF PASCO-HERNANDO STATE COLLEGEDanielle Christian and the Lady Quistas flew past their regional tournament competition without drop-ping a set to earn another berth in the NJCAA Division II national tournament. They would go 1-2 at thetournament to finish 11th.

The Central Pasco Chamber ofCommerce will host the 22nd AnnualFlapjack 5K (and 1-mile fun run) on Dec.13 at the Land O’ Lakes RecreationComplex, 3032 Collier Parkway. The 5Kbegins at 8 a.m., and fun run begins at8:45 a.m. The race will be in memory of

Kris Keppel, the popular Land O’ LakesHigh School cross-country coach whopassed away earlier this year from pan-creatic cancer.

Jack Boyle has been turning lumps ofclay into works of art for the better part ofhis life.

His first encounter with pottery camewhen he was just a little boy.

“My mother’s brother, Uncle Al – he andhis partner owned Jug Town Pottery, up inSeagrove, North Carolina, in the midst ofabout 120 potteries.

“As a child, I would go there. I wouldmake little bowls,” he said.

Then his uncle would fire the pots andship them to Boyle’s house, where they’d beused as ashtrays by Boyle’s mom.

The San Antonio man said he isn’t sure ifthose early experiences helped to mold himinto the potter he became. But then again,he said, maybe they did.

Boyle has spent the past 44 years creat-ing art from clay.

He began dabbling in ceramic sculpturalwork before arriving at the University ofSouth Florida in 1972.

When he walked into the pottery studiothere, and saw the teacher working at thewheel, he was instantly enamored.

“Part of it was that old clay smell,” Boylesaid.

“The thing about pot-tery is that it is soincredibly challenging,”Boyle said. “When you seeme centering clay, you’regoing to think, ‘Oh, pieceof cake, I can do that.’ ”

That assumption wouldbe wrong, he said.“I cannot stress to youhow difficult it is to get anylevel of expertise in pot-tery making,” Boyle said.“There’s a thousand thingsthat go into making a suc-cessful pot.

“When you first startout, it’s anything but beau-tiful.

“There’s no such thingas a shortcut in learninghow to make pottery. Youcan’t read a book about itto be a better potter. You’vegot to put the time in,”Boyle said.

Every part of the crafthas its own set of de-mands, he explained.

“The first thing you dowith clay, is you wedge itup – which is the processof homogenizing particlesin the clay body as well aseliminating any air bubblesin the clay.

“Then it goes on thewheel, where it has to becentered.

“The act of coaxing the clay up throughthe cylinder is a coordination of the cylin-der of the wheel with the subtleapplication of pressure, with the most pres-sure at the bottom, and you release it as yougo up, synchronizing that rotation with thatrelease of pressure,” said Boyle, noting ittook him about 20 years to put that processin words.

Working on the wheel is just one aspect. Then there’s the finishing, the trimming onthe bottom, the handles, the decorations andso on.

“Then it’s dried, and it goes into the firstkiln, which is a bisque kiln. It’s fired at 1,800degrees,” Boyle said.

Next, comes the application of glazes.A lot can go wrong there. Glazes can be

too watery or too thick, for instance, or theycan be fired for too long, he said.

The second firing is in a gas kiln, at 2,400degrees, he said. Generally hundreds ofpieces are being fired at once.

“You go through the entire cycle of pot-tery making, and the last stage is takingthem out of that pottery kiln, and afterweeks of effort, there’s bubbles in the glazeor the glaze has dripped off onto the kilnshelf,” he said. “That’s probably my least fa-vorite thing.”

Over the years, Boyle has created thou-sands of pottery items, which he has sold atsuch shows including Gasparilla in Tampa, the Mainsail in St. Petersburg, and shows inVirginia Beach and Pennsylvania, to namejust a few.

“Back in the old days, when I would do

From ‘mud’ to beauty — one man’s labor of love

these big shows up North, I would fill myvan and rent a trailer,” he said.

He’d pack hundreds of pieces, unpackthem, display them and then break downthe displays. And, that was the easy part.

Producing the works to sell was signifi-cantly more demanding.

Generally, though, he said he got into arhythm in producing for big shows.

When he’s doing a production of 50mugs, the work can be almost meditative,Boyle said. While immersed on artistic, sculptural pieces, his he’s in a zone and hismind is elsewhere.

Boyle said he enjoys switching back andforth, to stay mentally alert.

Sustaining a pottery business is a differ-ent kind of challenge.

Boyle said he never turned down an op-portunity to market his works.

“I did art and craft shows for 40 years. Isell in gift stores and galleries. I do a lot ofcustom work,” he said. “Pretty much anywayyou can think to make a buck in the potterybusiness, I’m either doing it, or I’ve tried it.”

It’s essential, too, to keep promises, Boylesaid. “To be successful in anything, you haveto be true to your word. You don’t makepromises you can’t keep. You take an order, you deliver an order,” he said.

Providing quality is important, too, hesaid.

There’s an unpredictability that goesalong with handmade pottery, Boyle said.“Sometimes it takes more than once to get itright.”

Being competitive matters, he added. He considers the cost of materials, the

value of his time and how his prices fit inthe market place.

“You can’t be much more expensivethan your neighbor,” he said. Price points areimportant, too. “I would rather sell 100 itemsfor $20 each, than hope to sell one item for$2,000.

“What I tell my fledgling pottery friendsis, ‘You’re not going to go broke making pot-tery mugs.’ You’re not going to get rich, butyou’re going to pay your bills,” he said.

Now that he’s stepped away from the art

show circuit, Boyle is focused on teachingclasses and making pots at his San AntonioPottery, his studio for 38 years.

It’s not a venture he would necessarilyrecommend, but he loves it.

“I have a passion for it,” Boyle said.“I make people happy. Not a lot of peo-

ple can say that people are genuinely happywith your labor.”

He’s planning to keep at it, too.“I can’t retire,” Boyle said. “I’ll do this until

I fall into a pile of spinning mud.”

Jack Boyle uses a tool to embellish the surface of a smooth clay bottle-form piece while itspins on the potter’s wheel. He said many tools are available at pottery supply shops, but hechooses to use just a few.

FRED BELLET/PHOTOSJack Boyle has been creating pottery and teaching students at San Antonio Pottery, on Curley Street, for decades.

San Antonio Pottery, at 11903 Curley St., is an area landmark.

For decades, Jack Boyle has traveled to arts and crafts showsnear and far. Now, he’s focusing on teaching and making pot-tery in his studio.

PET of the WEEK

Prancer loved the car and campingPrancer was a birthday gift from my son, John, and was 1.5 pounds when I gothim. We fell in love with him, and he was the best pet in the whole world. Hemade us so happy because he loved his family. We are so thankful we hadPrancer for many years — he was 12 years old. I wanted to share a Christmasphoto, where he sat so we could take pictures even though he didn't like beingdressed up. We love him and miss him very much. Prancer was part of theDoreen and Carl Kidd family of Land O’ Lakes.
