The LuxIQ™ is the first exam tool to provide task lighting assessments and prescriptions, a new servicefor the growing +60 population and K-12 children. While bright light is known to be important forfunctional vision, it is challenging to measure or prescribe. With the LuxIQ you can quickly quantifynear-vision performance over a broad range of light levels, color temperatures and colors, and thenprescribe specific bulbs or lamps.

Simply place the LuxIQ calibrated light source over reading material at a person’s working distance.Move its sliders to vary the brightness (lux) and color (°K or nm). The lightweight, portable deviceenables lighting assessments in an office, home, school or lab. With its Light Bulb Calculator™ orLightChooser™ software, recommend commercially available optimum task lighting in < 5 minutes.

Difficulty with reading or working? Lighting is a low-cost intervention.

Published studies show that many need bright light of 2,000-5,000 lux to maximize acuity. A typicaldesk lamp provides only 800 lux; an exam room 600 lux. Most people need additional light to work.Now you can give patients a concrete recommendation. The LuxIQ™ makes it practical to vary intensityfrom 0 to 5000 lux, and color temperature from 2,700 to 6,500°K—without swapping hot bulbs orchanging fixtures. Use it to:

5-Minute Lighting Exam

To assess acuity performance at various levels of illuminance and color temperature, switch on theLuxIQ and place it over reading material, such as eye charts and newspapers. In the white mode,examine the patient with intense, cool to warm light. Switch to the color mode to use the full spectrumof bright green to red light. For some, tinted light reduces eyestrain and further increases acuity.

1. Select intensity using Lux slider, and keep constant.2. Adjust color temperature at that intensity using Color slider.3. Record the preferred intensity (lux) and color temperature (°K).4. Use the Light Bulb Calculator or LightChooser™ web app to recommend lamps or bulbs.

Finally a scientific basis to discuss and recommend task lighting.

LuxIQ™ Exam Protocol

Here is a protocol similar to what others are using to take near-acuitymeasurements and give practical lighting recommendations in about 5minutes. First set luminance and then select color temperature. Luminancequantifies brightness; color temperature contributes to acuity and comfort.

STEPSLay down a standard acuity chart to quantify change. Acuity gain fromintense light is often greater at low contrast.

1. Record near visual acuity with exam room lighting.This provides a baseline measure of number of characters read.

2. Have patient set their preferred Lux (illuminance), and record acuity.

3. Have patient select the Color (temperature), starting with cold white(6500K).

OPTIONAL4. Re-evaluate the preferred Lux using the preferred Color temperature (step

3 above).

NOTES ON PROTOCOL

The acuity difference measured by the LuxIQ is a conservative estimate ofthe benefit of increased lighting. The “in-home” gain may be even greater asclinic lighting is often better than home lighting.

Using calibrated, white light makes it easy to recommend commerciallyavailable task lighting. Most clinicians work solely with the Lux IQ™ cold-to-warm white continuum. Others work with the green-red continuum as well.

If glare is an issue ask patients to try the green light option and record acuity.Preliminary evidence suggests green is beneficial for some patients. Greenlighting is available with the VisionEdge™ light.

To recommend light bulbs, use either the Light Bulb Calculator described onpage 7 or LightChooser™ App (www.lightchooser.com).

The LuxIQ™ is a calibrated optical instrument and should be handled with care.Prior to first use, please charge the LuxIQ using the provided AC Adapter for2-4 hours. If not in use, store the AC Adapter above the LuxIQ in the storagebox, not in the view area where it might bounce against the optics. If using theLuxIQ soft tote, store the AC Adapter in the zippered pocket on the front flap.

Do not stare into the light when turned on. This could cause temporary visionspots that typically dissipate in a few minutes.

Do not open the enclosure. There are no user serviceable parts, and doing sowould void the warranty.
