Important Portraits in One’s Life In recognition of Father’s Day, commentary and poem sub-mitted by Vi Cortez Ignacio, Ph.D.

PARENTHOOD is the world’s most intensive and most difficult course in love. After all is said and done, the most important part of a child’s background at any time of a “LIFELINE” is the love and companionship of his/her parents. It is a fact that the best gifts in life are the parent’s unconditional love, compassion, patience, un-derstanding, willingness to sacrifice, kindness, empathy, courage, endurance, and trust in the SUPREME BEING.

Being a parent is better than a course in THEOLOGY. It is gener-ally accepted that the most important fundamental right of child-hood is the right to be loved. As a child comes to this world alone, helpless, and defenseless, unconditional love must be given to the child for only love can stand between his/her infant helplessness and the savagery of a world full of hostilities, atrocities, uncertain-ties and challenges.

Each child is unique, a special creation of GOD with talents, abili-ties, personality, preferences, dislikes, likes, potentials, strengths, weaknesses, skills, and intelligence that are his/her own. To par-ents, it is an obligation to seek to identify these in each child and help him/her become the person God intended.

It should be realized that love and discipline are the foundations of training a child. Love is essential from infancy through growing years. Without discipline, one can not hope to teach a child to be respectful, competent, honest, reasonable, and responsible adult, saved from being prejudiced.

Specifically, to a father the relationship with the child is “one-of-a-kind” as no one else will ever be a “Dad” to him/her. It becomes imperative to demonstrate the heavenly father’s never-ending love by showing that child his own unconditional love for a father is a man who is always learning how to love. He knows that his love must grow and change because his children grow and change.

Being a father is teaching an offspring that when he/she is criti-cized, injured, afraid, or disciplined, there is a father who is ready to give comfort, who will hold him/her until one is felling better, help him/her until the child can live with the pain, won’t go to sleep when he/she is afraid of waking up and seeing the dark. To his child, he is strength, security, an example, and number one friend. He is a fellow who replaced the currency in his wallet with snapshots of his family.

A father is the head of a unit of people launched on an exploration of life and all the things that GOD has placed in this world for us to discover and enjoy. He is the “big guy” closest to one’s heart.

And to all the fathers in this cosmos:

ONLY A FATHER CAN GIVE IT ALL, TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR HIS OFFSPRINGS SMALL DOING WITH COURAGE, STERN, AND GRIM, THE KIND DEEDS THAT HIS FATHER DID FOR HIM; THESE ARE THE TRIBUTES THAT FOR HIM I PEN TRULY A DAD, AND THE BEST OF MEN

TO THE WORLD HE’S NOTHING SPECIAL, OH, HE IS GENTLE AND MADE GOD SO REAL, LIKE A STURDY TREE WITH BRANCHES LOFTY; GOD, FOR MY FATHER, I DO THANK THEE.

AND MY FATHER IS MY FOREVER IDOL, WHOSE MEMORIES ARE SWEET, BITTER AND ALL WHO SHOWERED ME WITH FAITH, LOVE AND UNDER-STANDING; NO ONE CAN REPLACE YOU IN MY HEART REVEALING.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! NAMASTE!

Vi Cortez Ignacio, Ph. D.

Bayanihan

Page 4 Tambul i June 2004
