Lyman L. Lemnitzer was born on August 29th 1899 in Honesdale Pennsylvania. He attended West Point graduating in 1920. He then was commissioned in the Coast Artillery which started his currier.

Lemnitzer was promoted to Major General in 1945 and helped in the negotiation of the German Surrender.

He was assigned to the Joints Chiefs of Staff after the Second World War.

He was placed in command of the 11th Airborne Division and saw action in the Korean War in 1950.

On July 20th , 1961 Lemnitzer attended a National Security Council meeting. There he presented to President Kennedy an official plan for a surprise nuclear attack on the Soviet Union.

During World War 2 in particular Lymnitzer played an important role in the strategy used by the allied forces, especially in the invasions of Northern Africa and Sicily.

After he won those important battles he was promoted to one of the top leaders of the allied forces Mediterranean campaign where he served until the end of the war.

November 1962 he became Commander of U.S. Forces in Europe and fallowing that in January 1963 he became the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe.

Lemnitzer retired from the Army in July 1969, back to his home town of Honesdale Pennsylvania.

Lyman died on November 12, 1988 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with his wife Katherine Tryon Lemnitzer.
