Tell us 5 adjecTives ThaT describe you?The 5 adjectives that best describe me are: ambitious, outgoing, loyal, efficient and hard-working.

WhaT do you like abouT your job?As cliché as this is going to sound, I love EVERYTHING about my job! I love how there is NO such thing as a “typical day” in the world of advertising! My job allows me to think “outside of the box” and be creative with my TV buys. I like how challenging my job can be and that I can take on different “non-traditional” roles when needed . Depending on the day and situation, these roles can range from a firefighter to a cheerleader to a negotiator. Most importantly, my job allows me to find a balance between working hard and having fun!

Why are you an asseT To your organizaTion? I feel that I am an asset to MEC because I strive to produce the best work possible as efficiently as possible. I enjoy new challenges and I tend to work well under pressure. I love working with people in order to find a resolution to problems in a timely manner and I also take the initiative to attend industry events (such as the BRC Gala) in order to gain insights on various TV related topics.

WhaT do you hope your Team Will be able To do more of in The fuTure?I am hoping my team will be able to win even more media awards and accolades in the future. Some of the best sales reps have really invested their time into getting to know their clients and brands they work on. Great sales reps focus on building strong rapport with their clients rather than pushing them to make a sale.

on Which device do you mosT ofTen WaTch your favouriTe shoWs? Why? The device I find myself most often watching my favourite TV shows on is my tablet. Since my schedule during the work week is hectic, I usually use the weekend to sit down for a few hours and catch up on the shows I have missed. With the development of downloadable video applications, I can easily watch my shows on a multiple devices, whether I’m on the GO train commuting to work or just hanging out at home in my living room.

WhaT is your favouriTe shaW media shoW?Big Brother is my favourite Shaw Media show. I am a dedicated Big Brother “Superfan” and enjoy spending the summer watching all the house guests conspire and compete against one another in order to win the grand prize! It’s almost as good as watching a daytime soap opera!

WhaT do you like abouT your job?Lots! It is great working in a collaborative environment and being surrounded by, and learning from, smart, dedicated media professionals. I also like the opportunity to get involved in various industry research committees and councils, with exposure to other media researchers and best practices. I like that I’m given the opportunity to determine how to contribute on a project. Recently, I’ve been pushing the limits of our software and using advanced applications and techniques to uncover meaningful consumer insights for our clients. Of course, mingling with my colleagues in the office lounge over beers and snacks on Friday ‘Last Call’ isn’t too bad either.

Why are you an asseT To your organizaTion? Vlookup, Sumproduct, Pivot Table. You may not know what they mean but I do and I know a lot of my colleagues are glad I do as well. Aside from my role as Applications Sherpa, I provide different perspectives on projects because of my cross client exposure. I don’t just produce reports; my goal is to deliver solutions to my internal partners by understanding the unique needs of the end client.

WhaT do you hope your Team Will be able To do more of in The fuTure?With a growing emphasis on the management and use of data to develop insight-based plans and measure and react in real time, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to play an important role in harnessing the vast data to help our planners deliver a truly Live ROI approach for our clients.

I also hope to lead our information sharing initiatives directed at internal colleagues and valued clients. WhaT do you like abouT your job?I’m the type of individual who thrives on change. I always feared that I’d end up in a career where I would be saddled with mundane and monotonous tasks. Luckily, that ended up not being remotely the case. In advertising, every day presents new challenges and opportunities. Part of my job is to continuously learn about people and their behaviours…the more I know about consumers, the better I am able to advise clients on how to connect with their audiences.

Coming from a small city in Ontario, I never knew this industry existed. You see and hear commercials, but you never step back and think of how they come about. I would love to see schools step up their efforts in bringing greater awareness to this field of expertise. I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with some of the brightest people around and it would be great if we as an industry could attract more people to come aboard.

Why are you an asseT To your organizaTion? I strongly believe that the success of any employee is at least partially attributed to the working environment of the company.

At Mindshare, “original thinking” is not just an internal slogan but an actual practice that drives everything we do. When we are encouraged to think freely, collaborate with peers, clients and partners, we are empowered to go beyond the dreaded “mundane” and find talents we never knew existed. Personally, this type of work atmosphere has afforded me the ability to progress and develop my talents much faster than I ever thought I could. The same could be said for many of my colleagues I’ve worked with at Mindshare over the years so I accept this recognition on their behalf as well.

on Which device do you mosT ofTen WaTch your favouriTe shoWs? Why? I really don’t have much spare time to catch up on my favourite shows through traditional means. With a busy schedule and a young child at home, I find myself watching my programs whenever and wherever I have a pocket of free time. I tend to watch a lot of my shows on my iPad or through scheduled recordings on my DVR. I’ve been doing this so much, that even when I do get to watch TV, I’ll have my iPad in-hand to further engage with the program. Times are changing.

WhaT is your favouriTe shaW media shoW?I didn’t originally give this show a chance, but after being invited (coerced) to watch the show with my wife, I found myself becoming a fan of Hawaii Five-O. There’s a nice variety of single serve storylines along with a great mythology story arc (that features the chairman of Iron Chef America…”Allez Cuisine!”) that keep viewers enthralled and entertained throughout the season. It features a great ensemble and over the top storylines that are reminiscent of the early years of CSI Miami. My guilty pleasure is watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but I try not to watch it too often as I usually have an uncontrollable urge to feast on really greasy food after a viewing (yes, that’s how I keep this wonderful figure of mine…need to look good in those sweater vests).

Why are you an asseT To your organizaTion? I can problem solve. Since we are integrated into many aspects of our colleague or client projects, my team is constantly challenged to solve the numerous uncommon problems that often arise. Some simple obstacles are typically overcome by effectively using one of our many tools, while the more complex and sensitive issues often require recruitment of colleagues with specific skill sets to help tackle the job. Not saying that I’m Nick Fury but I can empathize in regards to all the issues he would face when getting certain types of characters together in order to complete a mission.

I am also very proficient with Excel which surprisingly helps…a lot.

WhaT do you hope your Team Will be able To do more of in The fuTure?Technology and data have evolved to the point where management of communication, collaboration, and content now requires instant yet efficient delivery, while adhering to a higher level of standards and quality. I hope that my team will stay at the forefront of creating and establishing effective communication and implementation initiatives.

hoW can shaW media help you accomplish your fuTure goals? We look to our media partners to provide insights and analysis of their own properties beyond what is captured in sales material. I benefit tremendously when relevant information can be shared, as it reduces my extensive internal evaluation efforts and allows me to focus my time on other client needs. With a growing dependence on data and increased expectations for my team to leverage the multiple sources, I look to partners to help make sense of it and provide in a simple to use format on a regular basis.

name The qualiTies of a greaT media parTner?Being proactive and understanding are probably the two most important qualities of a great partner. It’s quite easy to separate those who just want to close a sale and those who genuinely want to provide real solutions to our challenges. Those who can provide long-term solutions or at least have proper follow-up etiquette are the type of people I love to work with.

on Which device do you mosT ofTen WaTch your favouriTe shoWs? Why? Television is still the main screen used for my broadcast consumption but I utilize different devices to source content. Most of the time I’m using On-Demand services or my PVR while other times I dip into the content streaming apps available through my various gaming systems. If I can’t find what I’m looking for through these primary devices then I’ll connect my tablet or smartphone as a browser and then use the TV as my monitor.

WhaT is your favouriTe shaW media shoW?

Hands down it’s The Simpsons. Sometimes I can’t recall what I had for breakfast the other day but I can most certainly bring up an awesome Simpsons quote at any time. “Dental Plan. Lisa needs braces.” “Can’t sleep. Clown will eat me”.

We do this already in terms of placement, but its how we place the media that I believe can be explored a little more.

They’re not afraid to present us with new ideas and new ways of approaching some of the challenges we face so that we can make a plan work. Continuing to understand our clients’ needs and helping us to accomplish our goals with opportunities that TRULY make sense for the advertiser is important. Selling for the sole purpose of selling annoys me – it has to make sense for our clients. And bigger discounts always help.
