PLACE DES TERREAUXPlace des Terreaux was laid out in the 17th century. Its name comes from the Latin word for the ditches (terralia) that once surrounded the Croix-Rousse peninsula. The fountain, a masterpiece by Bartholdi, has been moved several times. It wound up on the north side of the square subsequent to the 1994 renovation by Christian Drevet and Daniel Buren.

The 16th-century building burnt down shortly after its construction. Then, in the early 18th century, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles, renovated and altered it. A statue of Henri IV stands at the pinnacle where a statue of Louis XIV, destroyed during the French Revolution, once stood.

Lyon’s 1831 opera house was refurbished and considerably enlarged by Jean Nouvel in the early 1990s. As there was no land available for lateral extension, the architect doubled the building’s volume vertically by adding five nuderground levels and six levels beneath a roof topped off by an immense glass dome.

Beneath this majestic square, one of the largest in Europe, lies a metro station and a car park. The statue here of Louis XIV is a copy made in the time of Napoleon I. The original was destroyed during the Revolution. The statue of Louis XIV is on the base of a particularly firm urban legend of Lyon. We indeed tell that his(her) sculptor, realizing that he had forgotten stirrups in the statue, would have committed suicide.

Fourvière Basilica…

FOURVIERE

The people of Lyon vowed to build a huge church if they were spared an invasion by the Prussians. This imposing basilica was built during the second half of the century. It is often compared to the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. Unexpectedly, the old photograph feature the metal tower, which stands further away on the left: a photomontage aimed at getting together the two landmarks of Fourvière.

This pink house has one of the highest Renaissance stairwell towers in the neighborhood. It was carefully renovated, despite a few liberties taken with color. It used to be called the maison du crible (the riddle house) because its owner was a tax collector and a tax collector had the reputation of sifting endlessly through the taxpayers’ accounts. Moreover, a legend on the color of the tower reached until us. A head of family wanted to marry her daughter. As she refused the man whom he had chosen, she threw herself down from the tower. The splashed blood gave to this one its current color !!

From the Tête d’Or park to Gerland, the banks of the Rhône are entirely reserved for the pedestrians and for the soft traffic. From north to south, banks offer places of relaxation and freshness at the water's edge and establish a space of walk for children and adults. Entirely reorganized to let the nature express himself, banks are a model of river development. We can also take advantage of barges moored all along the route, which are alternately made bar, restoring or discotheque.
