Purpose   This report illuminates comparative patient experience

using Lyrica® and Cymbalta® to treat fibromyalgia

Company   PatientsLikeMe creates online medical communities

for patients to share health information, find other patients like them, and learn how to improve their outcomes. Our platform enables longitudinal study of disease progression and intervention in the real world.

Real-world fibromyalgia patient experience suggests that Lyrica® is more potent than Cymbalta®, which has both positive and negative consequences

  Patients more frequently report major efficacy on Lyrica® than Cymbalta® –  However, more than 40% of patients on Lyrica® and more than 50% of patients on

Cymbalta® also report little to no efficacy

  Side effects and lack of efficacy are the two main reasons patients discontinue Lyrica® and Cymbalta®

–  Patients cite these reasons more frequently for Lyrica® than for Cymbalta®, which may explain why patients more frequently discontinue Lyrica® than Cymbalta® within 30 days of initiating treatment

–  Only approximately 1 in 10 patients report consulting with their doctor before discontinuing Lyrica® and Cymbalta®

  Patient out-of-pocket costs do not differ between Lyrica® and Cymbalta® –  Access and cost barriers are not a driving issue for most patients

  Patient-to-patient discussions focus on coping with side effects at treatment outset to remain adherent with their prescribed regimen

Patient-to-patient discussions focus on coping with side effects at treatment outset to remain adherent with their prescribed regimen

I was reluctant to stop this drug because I felt major benefit from it, but the scary experience I described (severe brain fog) made me do some searching on the drug. I believe users should be fully informed of the possible long-term effects of this medication and I have chosen to discontinue treatment because of information I got from Googling "Cymbalta AND brain zaps.” My doctor downplayed my experience with the severe brain fog, and told me it was "just normal brain fog.” – PatientsLikeMe fibromyalgia patient

Initially this medication causes nausea. Eventually the severity subsides. Now the most weird side affect is rolling chills. – PatientsLikeMe fibromyalgia patient

Even though I tried to take in the past and could not due to side effects, a crisis event caused it to be prescribed again and I am tolerating it pretty well. Causes confusion, memory problems, blank emotions, in the beginning but it seems to not be working anymore. – PatientsLikeMe fibromyalgia patient

The side effects were very awful in the beginning....but I kept on the med as prescribed and the Dr. was going to increase my dosage but decided not to due to my side effects.
