Johnny Cash’s Hurt (first verse) I hurt myself today to see if I still feel I focus on the pain the only thing that's real the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting try to kill it all away but I remember everything what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end and you could have it all my empire of dirt (From official music video) This very short (one second) shot that I took from the music video was my basis for my whole visual aesthetic. First and foremost, this song was an interpretation of the Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” Their original version fell mostly on the use of drugs, while Johnny Cash (and I) chose the metaphor of reminiscence of the past in relation to nearing the end of life. This image, ironically, was meant to reflect the times he did spend in jail- once due to trafficking narcotics.
