MAHARAJAPURAM KRISHNAMURTHYMaharajapuram Krishnamurthy was the brother of the

legendary Classical Carnatic musician MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer. Blessed with a melodious voice and goodlooks, he went on stage and joined the celebrated KannaiahDrama Company even as a lad.

During the early decades of the 20th century, Tamil theaterwas at its zenith and Kannaiah Company was perhaps themost famous of them all because of its its stage craft, incredibletrick scenes and, what was then a novelty and an innovation, electric lighting. That was the period when the stage wasusually lit only with a couple of gaslights popularly known as“Petromax”, which was a trade name.

Kannaiah was the first play producer in south India to useelectric lights with a generator and it was advertised as anattraction by itself. Indeed people came more to see the lightsthan the play!

Kannaiah had only male performers in his troupe and nowomen were allowed to play roles. He made an exception onlyin the case of the famous stage and movie star, T. P. Rajalakshmi. The top star of the troupe was the immortal legend of Tamiltheater, S. G. Kittappa, who became a star with a fan followingeven outside India in countries like Ceylon (now Sri Lanka),Malaya (now Singapore and Malaysia) and Burma (nowMyanmar). When he left the troupe, M. R. Krishnamurthy andanother stage star, C. V. V. Panthulu took over withKrishnamurthy being more successful than Panthulu.

Krishnamurthy shot into prominence as a movie star in1934 with the release of a major box-office hit Bhama Vijayam”,the familiar mythological tale of Lord Krishna and his two wivesRukmini and Sathyabhama. It was produced by a successfulCoimbatore-based company, Chellam Talkies, at a cost of lessthan one lakh rupees, but grossed a stunningly incredible tenlakhs!

“Bhama Vijayam” was directed by the Hollywood-trainedfilmmaker Manik Lal Tandon and it had M. R. Krishnamurthyas Lord Krishna and the famous Palayamkottah Sisters (alsoknown as Bai Sisters) P. S. Ratna Bai and P. S. Saraswathi Bai,as Rukmini and Sathyabhama respectively. The two sisterswere noted stage stars and their patron, rich entrepreneur andtextile mill magnate interested in arts, P. S. Sathappa Chettiarbrought them into movies and promoted a film company andstudio in Madras.

When cinema began to talk Tamil in 1931, producers madea beeline to the theater and took up popular dramas for filmingin “asis-where-is condition”. Classical Carnatic musicianswere brought in to play the lead roles.

One such trained musician already famous on stage wasMaharajapuram Krishnamurthy. “Bhama Vijayam” was al-ready a successful stage play when it was taken up for filmingwith the same trio Krishnamurthy - Ratna Bai - SaraswathiBai repeating their stage roles.

To play the role of Sage Narada, a new face, the fast-up-andcoming Carnatic musician, soon to be a legend in his lifetimeand an immortal icon of music, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB)was cast.

Like most Tamil movies of that period, this film was also amusical extravaganza. It had as many as fifty-nine songs! AsGNB was better known and more talented and skilled thanKrishnamurthy, he had the edge over the latter. GNB sangmore songs than Krishnamurthy did in this movie.

Krishnamurthy sang in ragas Suratmalhar, Maund, Abheri,Kambhoji, ‘Hindustan Sarang, Hindustan Bhageshri andHindustan Yaman. He also sang the song made famous by S.G. Kittappa on stage “Kaami Sathyabhama kadhavaithiravaai” in raga Khamas.

The practice of bringing out gramophone records of film songshad not yet begun in 1934 and there are no records of songs ofthis film. No print of the film has survived either. Very sadindeed&

One of the interesting features of this film - call it anachro-nism or what you will! Lord Krishna and Narada sang a duet- Saint Thyagarajas composition in raga Thodi “KotinadhuluDhanushkodilo undagaa&”. And there is more to come! The lastsong was a chorus sung by the devotees of Krishna and it is nowthe Indian National Anthem! Yes, “Jana Gana Mana&”. Thissong was introduced to promote the Indian Freedom Move-ment which was then taking the nation by storm under theleadership of Mahatma Gandhi!

Replaced EB transformer yet to be removedSir, We are residents of K. G. Sunshine Apartment, 12th Avenue,

Ashok Nagar. Three months back, EB workers replaced the faultytransformer located within our compound and left behind the defectivetransformer with a promise to remove it in a couple of days. Howevertill date it has not been removed in spite of our repeated reminders andletters to the officials. Since the transformer is lying near the main gate,we are finding it difficult to take out our cars. We appeal to TNEBofficials to make arrangements to remove the transformer withoutfurther delay. – Residents’ Association of K.G. Sunshine Apart-ment, 12th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Ranganathan Street bylane can benefit pedestriansSir, With a view to help pedestrians, who literally get squeezed up

while moving along the ever-busy Ranganathan Street (T Nagar),Chennai Corporation can reserve the bylane between RanganathanStreet and Natesan Street exclusively for pedestrians. The lane is ina bad condition and misused as a urinal by Ranganathan Streetshopkeepers and its employees. Persons who wish to reach MambalamStation can use this lane instead of going via Ranganathan Street. Iappeal to the Corporation to clean up this lane and put it to exclusivelyuse of pedestrians.— V. S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Encroachments hinder traffic on Usman Road service lanesSir, The service lanes of Usman Road, T. Nagar, have been en-

croached upon by hawkers. This inhibits traffic flow and causesinconvenience to pedestrians. Adding to the woes, auto drivers haveconverted the lanes into temporary auto stands to look for potentialcustomers. It is high time Chennai Corporation and traffic officials tookaction to rid encroachments from the service lanes of Usman Road andalso the bylanes of nearby streets. – V. Sethuraman, 23, P.S. Road,T.Nagar, Ph: 96001 88824

By Our Staff ReporterIn reply to the petitions filed against the Chennai Metro Rail

Limited (CMRL), its officials have assured Madras HighCourt that it will not demolish ‘Ramaswami MudaliarChoultry’, a 100-year-old heritage building opposite CentralRailway Station, Poonamallee High Road, for the Metro Railproject.

But other commercial structures on the plot, except a hotel, will have to make way for the project.

The choultry (lodging house) came into existence after thegovernment allotted land in August 1888 to RamaswamiMudaliar with a condition that it accommodate train passen-gers free of cost. The government also made it clear that itcould take back the 1.33-acre land without paying anycompensation if it is used for any other purpose. Now the landbears several commercial establishments, including a hotel.

In 2010, the government realized that the land was requiredfor the Metro Rail project and also that a large portion of theproperty was being used by commercial establishments onlease or sub-lease, in violation of the original grant condition. It sought to take over the choultry and other propertiesthrough the Administrator General and Official Trustee (AG& OT), and a batch of petitions were filed against the takeoverattempt. Rao Bahadur Raja Sir Savalai Ramaswami Mudaliar,a dubash during the British regime, constructed the building

for the use of train commuters fora short stay free of cost after theyalighted at the railway station.

Mudaliar died in 1911 at the ageof 71 and was buried in a privateburial ground off Kilpauk GardenRoad, Kilpauk. His statue waserected by his friends in thechoultry.
