NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

Mr. & Mrs. IyerIn the midst of all the asinine actions of nearly 35 crore

democrats of Mother India jostling to press their blue eyedsaviour’s button on the electronic voting machine, I, withLakshmi, escaped to Bangalore where it is alleged that themercury is afraid to soar beyond 40 and also a whole stackof DVD was crying for our endorsement as ‘right’, havingbeen acquired by daughter Neethi. So, we did not uglify ourfinger nail at some polling booth this time.

“What is your menu, DVD wise, for us today?”, I askedNeethi and she fed the discy wonder into the machinesaying “Here is your pet, Mr. & Mrs. Iyer”. That was quitea name.

That was a picture that was all soul which supersedesthe animalism that envelops most actions attuned togetting ahead of the next fellow. The catch is that life is fullof fellows who want to jet ahead but the couple Mr.&Mrs.Iyer were my true followers and, till the end of the picture,we vibed well.

Konkana Sen, as the mother of a toddler, and Rahul Bose,as a bus passenger who is a wild-life

photographer, become embroiled in an instant commu-nal riot involving Hindus and Muslims. Bose and Konkanaspare detection as killer religionists and their escapadesamong the killer hordes. A Police Officer, charmed by theescapees, gets them train tickets to reach Tamil Nadu. Thedeed done, Rahul Bose returns to his wild picture shootingcareer, leaving a tug at our hearts. BEAUTIFUL!

Continued from page 1customary discounts on pur-chase of gold, some chargedless for wastage and makingcharges and offered gifts. Withvehicle parking being a majorproblem, NAC, a popularjewellery brand, offered its cus-tomers free cab service.

Yesterday, a sovereign of 22-carat gold cost Rs. 22,512, Rs.32 more than previous day’srate. Several buyers alsobooked their ornaments in ad-vance as they had the advan-tage of purchasing gold at arate sold on the date of booking.

N. Ananthapadmanabhan, regional chairman, All IndiaGem and Jewellery Trade Fed-eration, said that this year, light weight jewellery and sil-ver articles were most soughtafter. He however said thatthe business was compara-tively lower than the previousyears owing to higher pricesand the present economic con-dition. Princeson Jose (direc-tor of Prince Jewellery) saidthe sales did not start off wellas the bomb blast had an im-pact. However it slowly pickedup by the afternoon, he added.

P. Pakalavan (Deputy Com-missioner of Police, T. Nagar)said that on account of the twoexplosions in Chennai Central,a bomb squad was also sta-tioned nearby. Additional se-curity was provided along the2-km stretch of Usman Roadand its by lanes as it housesthe most number of jewelleryshops.

CCTV monitoring was donethroughout the day from thecontrol room, he added.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, The pavement on Alagi-risamy Salai (near Anna MainRoad, K. K. Nagar) is in a badcondition.

A year ago, most of the inter-locking slabs were removed andthe pavement was dug up bythe civic authorities to carryout storm water drain work.Since then in spite of a numberof reminders to the Corpora-tion, no action has been takento repair the pavement.

When I tried to lodge an onlinecompliant, to my dismay Ifound that Alagirisamy Salaiis not listed in the Corporation’swebsite.

There are a couple of schoolsin the vicinity and the studentsare forced to walk on the roadrisking their lives.

The photo I am sendingshows the condition of the pave-ment in front of my house.

I appeal to the Corporationto kindly relay the pavementand make this a public friendlystreet. – Sathish, 49, Alagiri-samy Salai, K.K. Nagar

Alagirisamy Salai pavement damaged for over a year

Sir, I wish to bring to yournotice that Baroda Street Ex-tension, which connectsThambiah Road and LakshmiNarayana Street (WestMambalam), is in a bad condi-tion. The surface which wasconcreted many years ago hasworn out. Further frequent dig-ging by civic authorities hasleft a number of potholes.

It is a daily struggle for pe-destrians and motorists to ne-gotiate the lane which getsworse during rains due to wa-ter logging and slush.

I request the concerned authorities to relay the road.— V.Jitendra, 60, Janakiraman Street, West Mambalam

Baroda Street Extension in bad condition

Sir, It is commendable to notethat Corporation of Chennaihas provided for rainwaterharvesting in all the newly con-structed flyovers in the city. The road surface on the flyoveris sloped to allow the rainwaterto flow to the margins fromwhere through pipe conduitsthe rainwater is collected andlet into 10-foot-deep pits dugunder the flyover.

These pits are not deepenough for water absorptionas the soil at 10 feet in mostparts of Chennai including thisneighbourhood is clayey.

Soil tests done by GammonIndia during construction ofG.N. Chetty Road flyovershowed that it is clayey soil upto 18 feet depth, so the pitsneed to be deeper than that foreffective rain water harvest-ing.

Such is the case in UsmanRoad flyover as well wherewater logging during monsoonis a common feature in spite ofprovision for rain water har-vesting.

Further, in one of the RWHstructures on G.N. ChettyRoad flyover, the slab covering

RWH pits under flyovers need to be deepenedthe pit has caved in.

Two-wheelers are oftenparked nearby and it is also aplace where pedestrians crossthe road.

The pit is not visible duringdark hours and hence thereis a risk of someone falling intoit.

I appeal to the Corporationofficials to deepen the pits foreffective rain water harvest-ing and also to replace the coverof the exposed pit in G.N.Chetty Road flyover. – Indu-kanth S. Ragade, Thiruma-lai Road, T. Nagar

‘Nungu’ arrives in the city

By Our Staff Reporter‘Nungu’ has started to arrive

in the city. A. Murugaesan ofAchirapakkam was seen sell-ing the fruit on the pavementof 11th Avenue, near its junc-tion with 7th Avenue (AshokNagar).

He told Mambalam Times

that he charges Rs. 10 for 3pieces.

He buys them fromAchirapakkam and nearbyvillages.

He said that he has regularcustomers and during off-sea-son months he works as a con-struction labourer.

Sir, I am a resident of Rama-nathan Street (T. Nagar).

On April 27, at around 10p.m, when I was returninghome in my car, I took thewestern end of Usman Roadservice lane which connects toRamanathan Street.

A group of hawkers nearAnnai Sathya Bazaar blockedmy way and told me the lanewas banned for vehicular traf-fic and I should take the circui-tous route via Burkit Road-Dhandapanai Road-PinjalaSubramaniam Street-Rameswaram Road to reachRamanathan Street.

Since it was well past 10p.m, and the hawkers werepacking up, I requested themto let me through.

But they stood their ground

and were also rude in behavior.I immediately called the traf-

fic police help-line who immedi-ately sent a patrol to the spot.In the meantime I also alertedT. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation.

I explained to the patrol teamthe predicament of residents, who, for no fault of theirs, areforced to take circuitous routeto reach their homes.

Once the policemen inter-vened, the hawkers relentedand allowed me to pass.

The patrol team also askedme to lodge a complaint in thisregard for them to take suit-able action.

I have also reported the is-sue to the local MLA.

My questions are as follows:When the service lane on the

Hawkers menace on Usman Road service laneeastern end of Usman Road isopen to vehicular traffic, whyis it blocked on the western-end?

Are the hawkers who occupythe entire stretch of the ser-vice lane licensed by the Cor-poration?

If the western-end lane isreserved exclusively for hawk-ers, during emergency, is a firetender or an ambulance al-lowed enter the lane to reachthe nearby streets or take thecircuitous route to the distressof the ailing resident?

I request the authorities totake immediate steps to regu-late the hawkers on the west-ern end of the service lane andopen it to vehicular traffic.—Mohammed Hussain, 19,Ramanathan Street, T. Nagar
