IDEALABS START-UP CONTESTI participated in IdeaLabs’ start-up accelerator contest with my product concept and business plan ‘MicLok’. Out of 70 participating projects, Miclok was selected with 5 other winners to re-ceive funding and coaching.
EXIT DESIGN AWARD My graduating project received a national de-sign award for the best graduating project. It was displayed in the design museum of Ghent during a design exhibition. (Jul.-Dec. 2002)

PROJECT PORTFOLIODuring the past few years I have been providing design consultancy services to different clients. While my client base is specalized in the music industry, my true core competence lies in industrial design that stratgically supports brand portfolio development in general, and coordinating teams to successful achievement. My outsourcing experience has given me the opportunity to develop a solid background in cooper-ating with Asian manufacturers, for an exhaustive range of materials and manufacturing processes. INDUSTRIAL DESIGNAs a design-consultant for a Chinese client, I created this electronic tuner.I handled the entire process, from idea generation to enclosure design, pack-aging design, design of the segmented LCD, and its animations. I further de-signed the device’s UI behavior. The project-flow consisted of an ini-tial concept stage involving the struc-tural design of all enclosure parts and the mechanical design of the versatile clamping mechanism. In a second de-sign stage, I assisted with the engineer-ing of the parts for manufacturing, in close cooperation with the engineers of my client’s R&D department.
ROTOMOLDING DESIGNI invented and designed ‘Staggcase’ in 2003. It is an innovative casing system for transporting & stacking drums. After it was patented, a dedicated roto-molding factory was set up in Foshan, dedicated to the production of the Staggcase line and other lines I de-signed in the following years. I was involved in the optimization of the production site and managed the technical follow-up on EMD’s behalf. ‘Staggcase’ put Stagg in the high-end market segment and contributed to a stronger brand identity. They have be-come the drum cases of choice for sev-eral international celebrity drummers. (They proved their sturdiness during P!nk’s 13 month-long Funhouse tour.)
APP & UI DEVELOPMENTFor EXA I created Drumtune PRO, an iOS drum tuning app. The app’s backbone is a carefully tweaked pitch analysis al-gorithm integrated in a tuning method which I invented and patented. In 2012, I developed the app’s con-cept, designed the UI, and outsourced the coding part. I cooperated closely with the programmer to ensure optimal looks and performance. I handled the sales for Drumtune PRO and gained experience in customer support and online marketing.With +10K users to date, Drumtune PRO has been successful in its niche market.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENTI invented and patented a printable sensor & interfacing technology which enables the digitization of deforma-tions of a sheet material under strain. From January 2014 to June 2015, I planned, organized, and managed a feasibility study in cooperation with different development partners. The patents are now property of Smart-head Innovations. Currently Smarthead is in the process of approaching leading companies in the industry, as a global licensing strategy is being enrolled. Smarthead has been founded with per-sonal funds and venture capital funded by co-founder Rasser | De Haan.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNFor Intermodalics, a leading company in the field of robotics and 3D vision, I cre-ated an IP67 compliant, waterproof in-dustrial 3D camera enclosure & mount-ing in the ‘Pick-it’ line.To ensure ultimate postioning free-dom, I designed a tool-free ‘release ’n lock’ ball joint. In addition I developed a plug-in airflow valve to efficiently re-duce the fail rate of automated pneu-matic picking suction cups. Next, I organized and supervised the manufacturing of this low-volume in-dustrial product and handled the im-port of all components from China for assembly in Belgium. I create many of Intermodalics’ logos , corporate graphics and ads.

MECHANICAL DESIGNCymlok is a quick-release clamping de-vice. It’s a nifty, ergonomic, durable and easy to assemble mechanical product, that I developed in 2009.In 2010 I commercialized this product, managing the design, manufacturing, distribution, branding, and internation-al sales. After 5 years of availability Cymlok is still holding a tight grip on its market share.

MECHANICAL DESIGN + STYLINGI invented a quick-release locking sys-tem for microphone clamps and stands. The system is based on Cymlok’s clamp-ing mechanism and consists out of a line of products that drastically reduces stage set-up / tear-down time. The full line is compatible with both European and American threads and stands. It features a built-in shock-mount func-tionality that eliminates contact & vibra-tion noises, hereby enhancing the audio signal quality of a mounted mike. The project was awarded with a grant of € 15K funded by Idealabs, a Belgian start-up incubator. Ikonoblast Keywords and skills: project management, research, mass manufacturing, overmolding, injec-

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNFrom within Ikonoblast I designed a foldable electronic drumkit for NUX, a leading Chinese manufacturer in the field. The design is loaded with innovative clamping mechanisms, and electron-ic features, currently under further development. The product involves a great deal of injection molded compo-nents, overmolded parts, electronics enclosures, cable routing and sensors. A minimalistic styling sets the product apart from the competition. The smart features differentiate the set from oth-er products within its price range. Final engineering and target costing is taken care of by the NUX engineers, with design consulting by Ikonoblast.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNDesign and development of the com-plete product range, including accesso-ries were my responsability. I handled the complete product development cycle for EMD. Design > Prototyping > Pilot run > Manufacturing control >Set-up of a QC procedure.It involved a total redesign of an elec-tric double bass and violincello to meet a EXW. cost of 150 USD/pc. The product range embrases a line of instruments, support systems, elec-tronic circuitry and a series of bags, cases, and stands. The product range sells well worldwide due to its looks, sound pallette and price-quality balance.

SHOPPING + CRM APPThis project involved a complete revi-sion of an existing app, into which an advanced mobile platform-based CRM system is integrated. The app doubles as a handy tuning tool & as a commercial platform. Hereby the existing user base is uni-fied in a social platform that enables individual users to interconnect, link to artist profiles, share personal settings and purchase products via an integrat-ed shopping system. The platform is designed to offer a discrete stage on which select third party advertisers can present and sell their product range, in a non-intrusive manner to targeted users, hereby selling only relevant products to relevant users at the right time!

PET FOOD CONTAINER LINEAs subcontractor for Pars Pro Toto design agency for an ongoing project, I developed a range of stackable and nesting pet-food containers. The product line consist of a se-ries of 6 containers with either a 6l, 25l or 45l food content. The designed models feature built-in air and moist seals, pouring lids, snap-in wheels, re-inforced flanges, ergonomic handles, conce-lead grips, locking latches, internal stacking supports, an IML and IML flange for advertis-ing puposes, shared pouring lids with over-molded air tight seals and TPE pullers. US/ EU market launch is planned early 2017!

A-CLASS 3D SURFACING My lectures on 3D surfacing, both at UA and Artesis Hogeschool, sharpened the students’ CAD skills. They were aimed at developing enhanced design free-dom, while pushing the students’ 3D modeling capacities and reducing their software dependence for styling.In addition to lecturing, I was hired to provide Solidworks CAD-support to Master’s students during a workshop on car design, to assist transforming their sketches into 3D models. Follow-ing the workshop, 3 teams of my stu-dents partcipated in a design contest by Materialize with a project realized within my class, two of who won the first and second price respectively.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTEMD‘s house-brand ‘Stagg’ is being dis-tributed globally. It carries 8000+ SKU‘s of musical instruments and accessories.Designing products for Stagg, an en-tree-level brand, required vision and creative flexibility to ensure balance between product quality and costs. The numerous ODM products I designed were manufactured by a great diversity of, mainly Chinese, suppliers. I designed for a vast range of manufacturing tech-niques including: die-casting, injection molding, rotational molding, vacuum forming, CNC, lathing, welding,... and worked with a wide variety of materials incl. woods, textiles, plastics, metals...
DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENTFrom 2005 onward I promoted to ‘New Product Development Dept. Manager’ at EMD. The responsibilities provided me the experi-ence required to lead a development team and to manage complex projets from idea to realiza-tion. I became responsible for project follow-up-in-house and I was responsible for the set-up and follow-up of pilot runs at the suppliers’ plants. My job responsibilites involved product development and design input, planning, daily team coordination, setting out project targets and budgets, and making sure they were met and problem-solving regarding economic/man-ufacturing/design/supplier related aspects.I worked with an international team of mixed lan-guage and mixed cultural backgrounds. I regularly traveled to suppliers in China to fol-low up on projects, pilot-runs and production quality.

OEM DESIGN Hired by Glamor, a Chinese manufacturer that is also an ODM supplier for one of the world’s most reknowned drum brands, I developed a range of sheet metal & die cast parts for a travel drum kit, found solutions to ensure that the kit’s structure was sufficiently strong to withstand the forces it was exposed to, yet light enough to haul around. I was requested to solve issues which the manufacturer struggled with in his own concept design. Together we took it to the next level, changing approaches, styling surfzaces and optimizing the components’ designs for tooling and manufactuirng in Glamor’s machine park. Main markets targeted are US and the do-mestic Chinese market.

CONSUMER ELECTRONICSFor Stagg I developed a universal effect pedal casing that enables to house an entire effect range and can be personalized per effect type. The die has several hole templates and re-tractable pins that can be set depending the manufacturings needs. This apporach ensures that the internal PCB layout and knob location and quantity can be altered within a single mold. This concept allows the brand to diver-sify with an effect range with a single die and a paint boot. The internal PCB can be accessed easily for repair and modding. A 9V battery is located under the pedal latch, while a bright LED is built into the hinge with a specially de-signed socket, that doubles as locking part for the hinge nut to keep it centered. A low innovative redesign of a simple and ro-buust, old school product.
MECHANICAL DESIGNFor Hybrid PantoRouter, a miling machine that simplifies making wood-joints re-quested to develop an innovative vac-cuum cap that allows to replace mils and spindles easily while keeping the working space as dust free as possible. I was involved as consultant to enhance the structural rigidity of the machine, design injection molded parts and I also took care of product visualization. The machine is about 55x50x50cm and weighs less than 25kg. Heavy enough to be sturdy, but also lightweight to carry around when needed. The HPR-One fits many routers and thanks to the reduction rings installing the router or swapping it for another model is as easy as pie.
