the issue, we were forced toengage private laborers tomove the branches away fromour gate but they continue toblock the pavement causinghindrance to pedestrians. – N.R. Raghavan, No. 2, 57th

Street, Ashok Nagar

Sir, It has nearly been amonth since the inauguration

Mambalam High Road continues to be a nightmareof the left arm of Rangaraja-puram flyover and yet the stateof Mambalam High Roadremains unchanged.

For decades the road was notmotorable owing to encroach-ments.

Even though the bridge iscompleted, the road is still notpaved and remains a dirt track.

The recent rains have furtheradded to the woes. Boulders, rocks and debris dumped duringthe flyover construction are yetto be removed.

Encroachments block theentire stretch of the road fromRangarajapuram RailwayGate to Duraiswamy Subway.

Though several articles haveappeared in the media, nomeasures have been taken toaddress the problem.

Eateries and other vendorsdump garbage all over the placewhich poses a serious healthhazard to the local residents.

Once the road is re-laid andencroachments are removed,it can carry a significantamount of traffic away fromUsman Road.

I request the authorities towake up to the situation andrid Mambalam High Road ofencroachments and re-lay it. –Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road,T.Nagar.

Sir, The pavement in front ofmy apartment is in bad condi-tion and is also dumped withgarbage.

It has not been cleaned forover a year. A broken wash-basin dumped a year ago is yet

Unlike the puny democrats of our good old India, thetough American not only enjoys the best things of life butthinks a little before entrusting his future not to the handsof the best bargainers, but to the guy who says, “Yes, wecan”.

I am glad Obama won not merely because he had all thatit takes to run the richest and largest country with varie-gated colours of skins, but because he and I entered thisbeautiful world through Kenya, where his father was born.

I too was born in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya where myfather T. A. Nayar was working in the Postmaster General’soffice of the then British Government’s Kenya, Uganda,Tanganika serfdom before Mau Mau overran the imperi-alists and made them tuck their tails and run. If my fatherhad not shipped us back to our beautiful India, particularlyKannur, after Hitler went mad, our family history wouldhave been different and probably I would have knocked thestuffing out of Idi Amin of Uganda.

Glorious fate summoned Obama’s father to Hawaii torewrite history to bless America by giving it an Afro-American amalgam to wipe the river of tears from Ameri-can eyes produced by Harriet Beacher Stowe’s immortalnovel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Abraham Lincoln, as Presi-dent, on being introduced to her, is reported to haveremarked, “So you are the young woman who started theCivil War!”. I hope the Cabin will be recreated as a nationalmonument by friend Barack as a permanent testimony tohis war cry “YES, WE CAN!” .

Train your dog to enjoyDeepavaliBy Dr. K. A. Vijayaraghavan

Kids start firing crackers and sparklers a week before Deepavali andthis continues upto Karthigai Deepam.

During this cracker season, your pets get frightened of the sounds, and tend to take shelter under the cots in dark rooms.

Some dogs are so cared of these sounds that they do not even comeout for answering nature’s calls, and some even go off during theDeepavali season.

Is it not a pity that, when you and your family are enjoying the lightsand sounds, your pets should spend their time in isolation and indarkness?

It is possible for you to train your dog also to enjoy the lights andsounds, and also the good food during this festival season.

The best approach will be to hold the dog and make it watch while thesparklers and crackers go on, so that it will slowly cast off the fear forthem.

Do not at all allow it to go under the cot. Your holding it will help thedog give up its fear gradually.

This is very much like training your pet dog to walk on the road. If yourpet had been mostly an indoor dog and if you take it out on the road allon sudden it will get scared of the vehicles and the crowd on the road.

If you take it out for short distances regularly, it will cast off the fearand start walking boldly on the road.

So, what is needed is a gradual exposure of your pet dog to the lightsand sounds associated with Deepavali.

Do not feed your dog with too many sweets during the season. Aftergiving a sweet or two, give it a raw carrot so that its teeth will getcleaned. If the dog allows it, clean its teeth with vinegar after it hasconsumed some sweets.
