Talk on ThiruArutpa on TuesdayBy Our Staff Reporter

Under the auspices ofVallalar Sanmargasangam(V.O.C Street, MGR Nagar, Ph:98403 66306), K. Kanniappanwill give a discourse on ‘ThiruArutpa – Aanmaye Orumai-patturimai’ on Tuesday, June4, at 6 p.m in Sakthi Vinayagartemple (P.T. Rajan Salai, K.K.Nagar).

All are welcome.

Sir, With the traffic on the new Rangarajapuram flyoverincreasing each day, the traffic jam at Bazullah Road-UsmanRoad junction is becoming unbearable. This has also led toincrease in noise and air pollution which are now constantlytroubling the nearby residents.

The lack of vision in the construction of the bridge is evident.Ideally the bridge should have crossed Usman Road and landedon the Main Bazullah Road.

This would have made traffic flow easier from under UsmanRoad. Now the new Rangarajapuram subway which is underconstruction is going to add to the existing problems. After itscompletion, the entire traffic from West Mambalam side willarrive at Mambalam High Road and exit via Bazullah Road.

Since the service lanes on either side of the Rangarajapuramflyover are narrow, the increase in traffic in this lane will makelife miserable for the residents on either side of the flyover.

Entering and exiting the apartments adjoining the servicelane is going to become a major problem. In case of an emer-gency, fire engines and ambulances will find it very difficult toreach the spot in time and to park and offer their services.

Students studying at Ramakrishna Mission School nearbywill face a traumatic time negotiating the traffic.

Hence I appeal to the Corporation officials to makeRangarajapuram subway a pedestrian-only subway and pro-hibit it from being used by vehicles. – Sriram, 90, BazullahRoad, T. Nagar, Ph: 9840773410.

Rangarajapuram subway should be madepedestrian-only

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, After a report in Mambalam Times a couple of monthsago about an unauthorized hoarding on the parapet wall of NSKflyover on G. N. Chetty Road at its junction with TirumalaiRoad (T. Nagar), the same was removed by the authorities. Now a new advertisement hoarding has appeared at the sameplace.

If immediate action is not taken by Chennai Corporationofficials, more such banners will appear all over the walls of theflyover making it not only an eyesore but also a distraction todrivers. There is also the risk of the banners falling down, leading to accidents.

I hope that the Corporation authorities will act immediatelyto remove the hoarding and also take suitable action againstthe advertiser.—A. K. Kulathu1, Sairam Apartments, 3,Valmiki Street, T. Nagar

Councilor’s actionspraiseworthy

Sir, This is to register myappreciation through Mamba-lam Times the incredible act ofM. Gunasekaran (ChennaiCorporation Councilor of Zone10, Ward No. 131).

Recently, I had brought tohis notice that the propertytax demand card for the finan-cial years commencing from2011-12 have not been distrib-uted by the revenue depart-ment to the houses in thecolony. To my surprise, he per-sonally collected the oldcard from my house the samemorning and personally deliv-ered it to me in the evening.

I found him to be a man ofpleasing manners and havecome to know that he makesregular inspection concerningcivic problems within his juris-diction and takes immediatemeasures to address the same.– R. Sundararajan, 6th Sec-tor, K. K. Nagar

Play apparatus in Jeeva Park damaged

Sir, I have been taking my regular morning and eveningwalks in Jeeva Park (G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar) for the pastseveral years. It used to be a pleasing sight in the evenings tosee the kids enjoying themselves on the slides and the seesawsin the park.

However owing to non-maintenance, most of the children’splay apparatus have got damaged. With the ongoing schoolholidays and the scorching summer, the play apparatus inJeeva Park is a source for entertainment for the neighbourhoodchildren. So I appeal to Chennai Corporation authorities totake immediate action to repair them.—R. Janardhanan, K.R. Koil Street, West Mambalam

When Ambikapathi was remade years later with SivajiGanesan and P.Bhanumathi repeating the roles of MKTBhagavathar and Santhanalakshmi, strangely, TA Mathuramwas to repeat her same role in the later version too, but the filmdid not do well at the box office. The MKT version was still toogreen in the memory banks of Tamil moviegoers.

Interestingly, though T. A. Mathuram and N. S. Krishnan, the greatest comedy pair of Indian Cinema as well as husbandand wife in real life, were cast in the original ‘Ambikapathi’, theywere not paired together as they were in other films. Indeed, they never meet on screen in ‘Ambikapathi’. Krishnan playeda wanderer falling in love with the buxom wife of a friend, playedby P. R. Mangalam. The friend was played by P. G. Venkatesan,a fine singer, known as ‘the Saigal of South India’. Krishnan’sinterest in the woman and the progress of their love affair wereconveyed in detail to the man by Krishnan himself, blissfullyunaware that his friend was the woman’s husband! A nice bitof comedy superbly done by Krishnan.

When screened at the International Film Festival 1991 inMadras, the packed South Indian Film Chamber Auditoriumrocked with laughter watching NSK’s comedy. His comedyremained as fresh as ever and the reception accorded to itduring the Festival clearly showed that Krishnan was still adraw. When he came on screen, even the below-30s in theaudience clapped, showing that he was still a cult figure fortyand more years after his death.

One of the major features of ‘Ambikapathi’ was its poeticand sweetly fascinating dialogues,. Dialogues in Tamil in earlieryears had been stilted or too colloquial, relying much on Brah-min slang. Elangovan changed all that. His Tamil added lustreto the film and, for the first time in Tamil Cinema, the dialogueswere specially noticed by the common person and the critic. The dialogue-writer assumed importance and Elangovan cre-ated waves in Tamil Cinema.

Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, by now a living legend, began toinsist that producers approaching him for a movie should cometo him only after engaging Papanasam Sivan and Elangovanand paying their customary advances. During that period, theBhagavathar - Papanasam Sivan - Elangovan trio was con-sidered just what was needed for box-office success. It all beganwith ‘Ambikapathi’.

With the stunning success of ‘Chintamani’ and ‘Ambikapathi’in a single year, movie enthusiasts started regarding ThyagarajaBhagavathar as a demigod. His subsequent films too beganenjoying yearlong runs. ‘Thiruneelakantar’ (1939), directed byRaja Sandow, was another musical hit of Bhagavathar’s. Oneof its songs ‘Dheena Karunaakarane Nataraajaa...’ joined thelist of great melodies of Tamil Cinema.

A tale of a potter-turned-saint, ‘Thiruneelakantar’ enjoysgreat popularity to this day.

As his films normally enjoyed long runs, Bhagavathar did notbelieve in doing films in quick succession. He engaged himselfin other activities like performing in music concerts, for whichthere was a great demand. That was why during the decade1934-44; Bhagavathar appeared in only nine films, all of themclassics.

‘Ashok Kumar’ (1941), directed by Raja Chandrasekhar, was based on a so-called historical story built around Ashokathe Great, his son Gunalan, and the young queenTrishyarakshitai. A tale of a lustful stepmother trying toentice her stepson, it was indeed a rehash of the popular folkmyth tale ‘Sarangadhara’, which has been filmed in more thanone language. A version with Bhagavathar and S.D.Subbulakshmi came out a ‘Naveena Sarangadhara’ (1936).Why Naveena (means ‘new’)? There had been a film called‘Sarangadhara’ (1935) in the earlier year and so this was called‘Naveena’! Simple, is it not?

In ‘Ashok Kumar’, Bhagavathar played Gunalan. A singingactress, T. V. Kumudhini, a newcomer who had made a markin 1939 with H.M.Reddi’s ‘Mathrubhoomi’, portrayed his wife.A leading Telugu star and fine actress, Pasupuleti Kannamba, who played the lecherous stepmother also came in for noticefor her graceful beauty. ‘Ashok Kumar’ too was a majorsuccess, all its songs becoming hits ....

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

Chief Justice SathasivamThe heir apparent to the Supreme Court Chief Judgeship, Justice

P.Sathasivam, will, when he ascends the Supreme throne on July19, cement the North-South corridor of justice in peninsular India(as not many before him could manage with their respectiveconstituents) into an amalgam which future generations will cite asthe acme of spotless justicing.

Justice Sathasivam, though he has reached the icy heights in theNorth, is rooted in the farm lands (for they are his inheritance inTamilnadu) and, as a commoner, will have two appreciative ears tolisten to the woes of the farming community. I, as GovernmentPleader of the Madras High Court, knew Sathasivam who, as theSpecial Government Pleader for land acquisition cases, could pre-pare and argue Writ Appeals in a trice. That is probably the inherentquality that has taken him to where he is now, as his dedication tohis mission of doing complete justice to the brief he holds, wasappreciated by his client, the government, which bespeaks unsul-lied honesty.

When the Madras Bench had a gaping toothless look, he and someless deserving ministerial cronies became Judges. Soft spoken, extremely respectful to the bar and his colleagues, he is a model tobe emulated by the young lawyer with aspirations to enrich the barand himself which will, in combination, elevate the fora of justice tothe highest level expected in a country governed by the rule of lawand honesty, which Bharat is.

From a pastoral background to the pinnacle in the capital is ajustly rewarded honour by the Central Government which requiressuch redemption in its

tempestuous reign of scam-ridden rule which few governmentshad to face before.

“Honesty is the best policy” says the copy book intelligence foryoung minds, but forgotten the moment it is written in the book.Sathasivam and I carried it in our mind indelibly and he has risento the Everestian heights fuelled by the H-rocket. May his tribeincrease!
