TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 41

The explanation why he did not use D. K. Pattammal’s ‘SriSaraswathi Namosthuthe’ in ‘Miss Malini’ was given by Vasanyears later in a chat with this writer. “The character Malini isa poor woman who, out of poverty, is forced to seek a livelihoodby going onstage. Her father is unwell and she has no moneyto buy medicines for him. So she takes the test and sings thesong. A person of such background in such a difficult situationwill feel nervous and even scared. And Malini is not a trainedmusician. Such a woman could not be expected to sing withsuch class, perfection and brilliance which Pattammal defi-nitely had and revealed in her singing. Malini could never singlike that! That was the reason I did not use Pattammal’srendering and got a regular playback singer, T. V. Ratnam, tosing that song instead!. A convincing explanation from aserious filmmaker!

Pattammal sang songs in Tamil and Sanskrit in Chittoor V.Nagaiah’s Telugu film classic “Thyagaiah”. And a few otherforgotten films.

Because of her family background, tradition and Brahminmiddle class values, Pattammal never sang love duets andhardly saw the films in which her songs were featured! After sherose to dizzying heights of success and fame in the Carnaticmusic world, she moved away from films. Though she had sungin too few films, her songs of Bharathiyar in “Naam Iruvar”shall ever remain immortal melodies!

Papanasam Sivan - A Cinematic PerspectiveIf Tamil film music is today part of life among Tamilians

anywhere in the fast-shrinking world, a good part of the creditshould go undoubtedly to Papanasam Sivan. Classical CarnaticMusic maestro, legend in his lifetime, legend that still lives evenafter his departure for the yonder blue and beyond, a savantof music hailed as “Thamizh Thyagaiah”, his contribution toTamil cinema, its music, and more more precisely its songs, isrichly outstanding. Indeed his body of work in cinema awaitsa proper, full length and in-depth study. He truly laid the firmfoundation for film songs to become popular during the 1930-1940s almost single-handedly. Besides, he made Carnaticmusic popular among the common folks with his scintillatinglymelodious film songs based on traditional Carnatic raagas.

If a list of the immortal melodies of Tamil cinema is taken,a good number of them of the early decades would be hiscreations: ‘Radhey Unakku Kopam” (Chintamani), “NatakameUlagam” Chintamani)”, Gnana Kann Ondru (Chintamani),“Sivaperuman Kripai” (Satyaseelan), “Maa Ramanan UmaRamanan” (Seva Sadanam), “Manamey KanamumMaravathey” (Savithri), “Manmatha Leelayai” (Haridas),“Krishna Mukunda Murarey” (Haridas), “DheenaKarunakaraney Nataraja” (Thiruneelakantar),“Characharangal Varum” (Thiruneelakantar), “Un AzhagaiKaana” (Thiruneelakantar), “Unnai Kandu Mayangaatha”(Ashok Kumar), “Satrey Sarinda Kuzhaley” (Ambikapathi),“Vadhaname Chandra Bimbamo” (Sivakavi), “KavalayaiTheerpathu Naattiya Kalaiye” (Sivakavi), “Soppana Vaazhvil”(Sivakavi), “Neea Illaamal Anuvum Asaiyumo” (Pankajavalli),“Enthan Idathu Tholum Kannum” (Sakunthalai). And dozensmore! Papanasam Sivan created them all!

In recent years, two of his film songs “Maa Ramanan UmaRamanan” and “Manamey Kanamum” are sung regularly byClassic Carnatic musicians in their concerts and have wonpopularity.

Indeed not many are aware that “Maa Ramanan” in Hindolamwas sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi in K. Subramanyams hit film“Seva Sadanam” (1938)!

Cinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931 with H. M.Reddi’s “Kalidas” produced in Bombay by the Indian filmpioneer, Ardeshir Irani, the maker of the first Indian talkingpicture “Alam Ara” in the same year. It inherited the legacy ofTamil theater where songs ruled the roost . Everybody sang:the hero and heroine, message-bearing maids, comedians andall the king’s men and women. Even the villain sang, whileapproaching to dishonour the heroine, in praise of her bodilyassets, and the rare joys and rapturous thrills awaiting herthanks to his macho power! Even a dying man would sing beforehe took his last breath!
