In the field of Education, Michael Bell has helped students earn over ten million in scholarship
offers over the past five years alone, averaging 2 million per year since 2011. Bell has produced seven
back-to-back National Rising Star Award Winners in Art, the most prestigious award presented by the
National Art Education Association (NAEA) to just one student artist in the country annually. In
addition, Bell has produced eight Scholastic Art National Medalists in Painting and Photography. This is
an award presented to just .7% of the nation in art out of 225,000 applicants annually, grades 7 – 12,
and they’ve been awarded in high school to the likes of Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, and Sylvia Plath
to name a few. Bell’s student artists have also earned over three hundred and fifty Northeast-Region-
At-Large awards since 2014. His students move on to the best art schools in the country earning the
top scholarships in the nation. As impressive as all this is, it’s the dramatic transformation of Bell’s
students under his tutelage that’s his greatest legacy.
Bell impact on the arts began while just in his third-year teaching art, when he founded
“ArtQuest", which has grown into one of the largest and most community inclusive student art
exhibitions (K – 12) in the United States, and one that is backed by National Sponsor Kathy Kahre-
Samuels, President of ArtQuest, Inc., based out of St. Louis, MO. This vision became Bell’s legacy and
one that awards student artists over $2,000 in over sixty different categories annually. ArtQuest has
also become the platform for the community to attend and participate, as well as a place to build a
National Art Honor Society chapter that now recognizes close to one hundred members annually.
Bell also co-founded and helped create the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Gifted Visual
Arts (GT) Program with then Coordinator of Art Mark Coates in 2000 to recognize “the best of the best”
in county through a portfolio screening process. Bell developed the curriculum and has taught the
program since its inception. From there, Bell was honored as the Maryland Art Education Association
Teacher of the Year (2002) and Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year (2004),
becoming one of twenty-four Maryland State Teachers of the Year. In 2005, Bell was commissioned to
paint the official portrait of Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland's first female and the U.S.’s longest serving
State Superintendent of Schools. Bell was also selected to become a Mentor for the MSDE’s “Teachers
of Promise Institute,” mentoring the “best of the best” new teacher recruits as deemed by Art Colleges
across the State of Maryland annually since the program’s inception. This led to numerous candidates
across the State being hired in Anne Arundel County due to Bell’s mentorship.
Upon completing his Master’s in 2005 Bell began pioneering the Visual Journaling movement,
giving workshops and keynotes across the country, in addition to numerous webinars and podcasts for
the NAEA and theArtofEd and a TED talk on “Drawing a line from your life to your art that is straight
and clear.” In 2007 Bell co-authored Southern High’s National Blue Ribbon Schools Proposal with
Southern High’s Signature Program Facilitator, which led to Southern High earning a National Blue
Ribbon in 2008. Bell was then promoted to Art Department Chair and expanded his department an
entire full-time position just one year after his first new hire. He has grown his Art Department from a
three to a five-person department since then, which makes Southern High the largest art department
in the smallest, most rural school in county (with just under 1,100 students).
In 2009, Bell was selected as one of just two Secondary National Presenters by Arne Duncan,
U.S. Secretary of Education to share Southern High’s success through “Advanced Programs of Study in
Arts, Innovation, & Design” at the National Blue Ribbon School Ceremonies. This same year, Bell was
instrumental in helping write curriculum for a new Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School (PVA)
Program. In 2010 Bell joined the ranks of just 3% of the nation's educators to earn National Board
Certification, and in 2013 he had one of his most amazing years to date, being awarded: the
CollegeBoard’s William U. Harris Award of Excellence in Brooklyn, NY for demonstrating extraordinary
leadership across the nation in the field of education; the NAEA’s National Art Honor Society Sponsor of
the Year in Fort Worth, TX; the Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year and
the Dr. James Douthat Outstanding Achievement Award from his alma-matter, Lycoming College.
In 2017 Bell published a memoir about his art and life entitled, “DUAL LIVES: from the Streets to
the Studio” which chronicles his meteoric rise to becoming one of the most highly regarded art
educators in America, while also being a father to an incredible autistic son and portrait artist to the
stars. He also returned to his alma matter to do pay tribute to the school and community by doing a
book signing, author talk and month-long art exhibition at Converge Gallery in Williamsport, PA.

Michael Bell has not only excelled in the world of education, but also in the art world, as a
renowned American artist. Bell is best known for his narrative series paintings and for his infamous
portrait clientele, which includes John Gotti, Dominic Capone and numerous actors from hit television
shows and movies such as the Sopranos, Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale and more.
Bell has always been naturally gifted in art, winning 1st Place in the first art show he ever
entered at the age of five. As an emerging artist he spent a lot of his time in and around New York City
studying art with his maternal grandmother, Violet Vallery, a self-taught artist from Lyndhurst, New
Jersey, where he began to explore life's psychological issues through his paintings.
As a domestic violence and anti-bullying activist, Bell has received the Los Angeles Good
Shepherd Domestic Violence Community Service Award in 2005 and champions his activism in schools,
teaching students how to create hundreds of handmade sketchbooks for the women and children’s
shelter annually, just in time for Christmas. Bell has done numerous interviews on the topic with
longtime friend, painting client and former mob wheel woman Georgia Durante, along with Denise
Brown, sister to Nicole Brown Simpson, slain ex-wife of O.J. Simpson. Bell also created the notable
collaborative portrait of Amanda Todd, the Port Coquitlam, B.C. teen that committed suicide after
documenting her years of bullying on YouTube. This portrait made international headlines in the
Huffington Post and forged a lifelong partnership to end bullying between Bell and Carol Todd, mother
of the fallen teen. In 2012, Bell's activism also led to a collaboration with world renowned artist friend
Eric Fischl, contributing projects based on our “30 Human Rights” for Fischl's AMERICA: NOW AND
HERE movement. This sparked an impressive Super Session of Bell's “31Nights” project at the NAEA
Convention in New York City, and has prompted numerous keynotes ever since.
In addition to Bell's incredible contributions to the art world, Bell has donated his time and
thousands of dollars through the sale of his paintings for numerous charities at auctions in New York,
Chicago and Los Angeles. Bell also has authored a screenplay based on the real-life events surrounding
his famous "TICKET TO RIDE" painting series, which was first launched at a Solo Exhibition in New York.
The show was attended by some of Bell’s celebrity portrait clientele, which led to Bell's partnership
with HBO’s Sopranos star Joseph R. Gannascoli and the creation of artwork for Gannascoli's CUGINE
Cigar Line and a celebrity portrait unveiling with other Sopranos stars Dominic Chianese and Frank
Vincent to benefit Bright Steps Forward to help fund their Educational Academy for Autism, years
before Bell’s own son’s diagnosis with Autism.
Bell has also made several television cameos, appearing with his Sopranos pals in Brooklyn and
in Chicago at the World’s First Golden Age of Gangsters Convention doing print signings; doing live
radio shows with the Sopranos John Fiore and Dominic Capone III (Al Capone’s Great Nephew); acting
as a Spy on Season 22 of CBS's The Amazing Race; playing the role of a Pizza Guy on Season 1 of NetFlix
hit series House of Cards; doing a portrait unveiling on Season 3 of VH1's Mob Wives; and another
cameo in Season 1 of The Capones, where Bell was filmed at his Solo Art Exhibition in Chicago and
unveiling a new commissioned portrait at the gallery for pal Dominic Capone III. In 2015 Bell received
another major commission to create an epic portrait for John A. Gotti for the cover of his best-selling
novel "Shadow of my Father," portraying him and his iconic father, John Gotti, Sr. as colossuses over
Manhattan. On January 18th Bell’s portrait made the cover of the New York Daily News. This
experience, along with his son’s inspiring story and the triumphs of all his students in his classes over
the years inspired Bell to write his own memoir that was published in 2017, “DUAL LIVES: from the
Streets to the Studio.”

“Painting, for me, is a dynamic process of self-exploration and a constructive way for me to give
form and expression to an internal experience. While I spend a lot of time on the surface, it’s the inside
of my subjects that I’m really after.
I'm also concerned with the interconnections formed between my works; therefore I present
my narrative series paintings in a specific viewing order. The culminating experience takes the viewer
through a cinematic journey where stories are born. The work becomes a direct reflection of all that
was revealed to me during intense moments of personal clarity. All I am is what I create. It's my
blessing to share with the world.” – Michael Bell

10 min highlights from “Drawing a Line from your Life to your Art”: https://youtu.be/JJFmcVaLXWE
E X C E R P T F R O M T A L K “The most important job of any artist is to draw a line from your life to your art that is straight and
clear. Success is created mentally first. Boxers, like artists, musicians, and writers are all cut from a
similar cloth, born from similar temperament. Something makes us individuals in the extreme. And you
don’t ‘make it’ and then suddenly feel like a rock star. You have to feel like a rock star already! That’s
creating success mentally first. So tap into your ‘why’. Why you do what you do. For me, I’ve always
tried to catch kids before they fall. That’s my why. Each of us has a story to tell. So look no further than
your own story to share with the world. Draw a line from your life to your art that is straight and clear.”
