Coastal ResilienceCoastalCommunityResilienceSpecialist Dr.ThomasHerringtoncontinuedworking withcoastalresidents to

improve their understanding of present andfuture climate change impacts. Dr. Herringtonpartnered with ISeeChange.org to create anapp for residents to document and mapcoastal flooding in their community in real-time, which allowed the community toestablish a local nuisance flood tide elevationfor communicating possible flood events. Dr.Herrington is also working with professors atMonmouth University’s School of Social Work tobetter understand the co-production ofcommunity science and improve Sea Grant’sengagement with citizens for the collection ofactionable science data.

Marine Recreation and TourismMarine Recreation Extension Agent MichaelDanko continued partnerships with NJDEPDivision of Fish and Wildlife, Marine TradesAssociation of New Jersey, Monmouth CountyHealth Department, Ocean County PlanningDepartment and others to provide funds fromthe New Jersey Clean Vessel Act Program tomarinas for installing, operating, andmaintaining pumpout facilities. Coastal waterquality continues to improve and recreational

boaters arenow providedthe necessarypumpoutservices toimprove overallwatershedfunction tocoastalestuaries.

Shellfish AquacultureAquaculture Program Coordinator Lisa Calvoworked collaboratively with educators atUpper Township Middle School and LowerTownship Regional High School in Cape MayCounty, New Jersey to provide studentsexperientiallearningopportunitieson an oysterfarm. Theauthenticexperiencespresented aplatform forlearning aboutsustainability,aquaculture, bay ecology, and aquaculture-related career paths.

Stormwater ManagementWater Resources Extension Agent Sara Mellororganized a Department of Public Works RainGarden training session at the Long BranchPublic Library inSeptember, wherestaff learned howto install a 280square foot raingarden that willtreat 29,200 gallonsof stormwaterannually at theOcean TownshipCommunity Pool.Followingexcavation andpreparation, therain garden wasplanted by volunteers from the Whale PondBrook Watershed Association with plantspurchased by the Ocean TownshipEnvironmental Commission. The prime locationmakes this installation a great demonstrationproject for what homeowners can do on theirown property!

Coastal HazardsMid-Atlantic Coastal Storms Fellow LauraLemke continued working with CoastalProcesses Specialist Jon Miller on thedevelopment of an index for assessing theerosion potential ofapproachingstorms, and recentlypublished an articleon her work in Shoreand Beach. FormerCoastal EcosystemsExtension AgentAmy Williams alsopresented “Sharksvs. Rip Currents” at many schools, libraries, andfestivals throughout the state to raiseawareness of beach safety and oceanhazards.

Living ShorelinesCoastal ProcessesSpecialist Jon Millerworked with agroup of studentsand professors fromStevens Institute ofTechnology andRutgers University onthe development ofa conceptualdesign for an urban ecosystem island off thecoast of Bayonne that would incorporateseveral living shorelines techniques. Extensionagents continue working with staff from TheNature Conservancy and Partnership for theDelaware Estuary to evaluate the costs andeffectiveness of several recently constructedliving shorelines projects.

State of the ShoreThe 17th annualState of the Shoremedia event washeld in Asbury Park inMay. CoastalProcesses SpecialistDr. Jon K. Miller andNJDEP Commissioner Catherine R. McCabereported on beach conditions, coastlineforecasts, and important pre-summerupdates. Former Coastal EcosystemsExtension Agent Dr. Amy Williams also spokeabout rip current safety. The event drewconsiderable press coverage and attention.

New Jersey’s “Favorite Beaches” Survey andCeremonySeveral thousand voters participated inNJSGC’s “Favorite Beaches” poll, withOcean Cityremaining thetop overall victor.A publicboardwalkceremonyattracted dozensof bystanders

and press associates prior to the July Fourthholiday. Representatives from Monmouthand Ocean counties were also recognizedduring a live “sneak peek” radio broadcaston 94.3 “The Point.”

Jersey Shore Photo Contest CalendarNJSGC’s revamped “Jersey Shore” photocontest debuted with the “Favorite Beaches”poll. Afterdozens ofentries andthousands ofvotes, the Top12 imageswere used tocreateNJSGC’s 2020calendar. The competition which embracednatural elements of the state’s beautifulcoastline, garnered vast social mediapromotion. A downloadable desktop versionis available (free of charge) on the NJSGCwebsite.

Professional Development & Student ResearchNJSGC collaborates with extension agents andscientists to help develop curriculum. Newocean acidification material was producedand shared with over 175 educators at

conferences/workshopsin 2019. Approximately40 graduate andundergraduate collegestudents were alsosupported with NJSGCfunds across theresearch portfolio. Students supported byNJSGC-funded researchgain valuable real-worldexperience thatprepares them forcareers in ocean and

coastal sciences. Skills learned such asexperimental design, field methods, labtechniques, and data management andanalysis enable students to collaborate withscientists and professionals in stakeholder-drivenresearch thataddressesNJSGC’s areas offocus. OmanjanaGoswami (RutgersUniversity –Newark)representedNJSGC as part ofthe 2019 John A.Knauss FellowshipProgram.

K-12EducationIn 2019,NJSGCeducatorsfacilitatedmarine andcoastalsciencelearningexperiences

for close to 19,000 K-12 students fromthroughout the State of New Jersey as well asfrom parts of Pennsylvania and New York. Over250 visiting school districts took part in field tripsthat providedoutdoorlearningexperiencesdesigned todevelopunderstandingandawareness ofmarine andcoastalecosystems.Programs are correlated to New Jersey StudentLearning Standards to supplement formalinstruction in schools.

Ocean Fun DaysCelebrating its 16th year in 2019, Ocean FunDays continues to be NJSGC’s premier publicoutreach event drawing approximately 15,000

visitors over a2-day period inMay. Hostedat IslandBeach StatePark andGatewayNationalRecreationArea – SandyHook inconjunctionwith NewJersey NaturalGas, visitors tothis family-friendly eventare treated to

free field trips, laboratory activities andpresentations from NJSGC and its partners. Avariety of exhibitors shares environmentally-relevant information and encouragesstewardship of New Jersey’s coastal resources.

Community PartnershipsNJSGC continues working with diverse audi -ences and partners, including the CentralJerseyChapter ofNorthAmericanAssociationof NegroBusiness andProfessionalWomen’sAssociation,Inc.Educatorsworked with 35 minority students from AsburyPark in an effort to develop environmentalliteracy, provide career awareness, andencourage workforce development.
