2Understand- Students will understand that:Understanding the meaning of words is essential to communication and learning Time is universalThe concept of time is different across cultures and countriesThere are differences in social practices and personal interactions which are significant to culture.

While time is universal, cultures have different concepts of time and schedules. Students will also understand that the different concepts of time and schedules are significant to each culture. In Spain, the two hours spent away from work and at home are significant because they reflect a focus on family3DO- Students will be able to:Demonstrate their knowledge of vocabulary by accurately using the vocabulary words in a sentence. Make connections between a word root and the meaning of the word.Ask and answer questions about time.Identify key differences in social practices and personal interactions among cultures.Compare our schedule with a Spanish schedule.

Lesson #1- vocab acquisitionPretest Knowledge of Critical Content WordsElaborate on and discussed hypothesized meaningsPatterns of meaning: Spanish words have common Latin/Greek roots which can be used to help determine the meaning of words. Read/Study- Put words in context, encourage usePosttest (Formative Assessment) will include identify the word roots

Summative Assessment- Vocab words included within unit test questions.

For example medianoche (midnight) medi- middle noc- night (nocturnal)Put the words on the board to encourage their use in class during and after the lesson.

5Lesson #2- Direct InstructionUse a large, visual clock to teach students how to tell time in SpanishGuided Practice using white boards, students will ask and answer questions about time.

Formative Assessment- Whiteboards to assess student comprehension throughout lessonSummative Assessment- Answer questions on telling time on the Unit Test.

Lesson #3- Socratic SeminarMaterials: Articles to read prior to discussion, discussion questions of varying cognitive demand, exit slipBig Idea: The importance of time depends on culture. Daily schedules in the US and Spain have different practices.Formative Assessment: Exit SlipUnit test questions might include:As we have discussed in class, there are many differences in daily practices/routine in the United States and Spain. Each culture has unique elements. Please identify three (3) differences in daily routine and schedule.

Choose the text- For the Socratic seminar, I chose two short online texts. One is called Spanish Meals & Customs. The second is called Heart of Spain: Families and Food. How would eating at different hours affect other parts of your schedule? Ej. Eating dinner at 10:30?
