Thirumoorthy Street, T. Nagar) collapsed at around 2 p.m on May 16after it was hit by a heavy vehicle. No one was injured in the accident.

Under the auspices of Narayana Sastrigal Meru Trust, ‘VarunaYagam’ comprising of japam and homam was performed in ChakraMaha Meru Dhyana Mandapam in Chakrapani Street (WestMambalam) on Wednesday to invoke the rain god.

Vedic scholars performed kalasa pooja and chanted Vedic mantrasfrom Sapta Kandam of Yajur Vedam.

A large drum filled to brim with water was offered to the Gods toalleviate the prevailing drought conditions in many parts of Tamilnadu.

He said that since the present compound wall of the burial ground willalso have to be demolished to widen the road, a new one will beconstructed 5 feet away from the present spot. Encroachments andother obstructions will also be removed to facilitate the road wideningwork, he added.

Residents’ Association to Chennai Corporation, metal gratings wereused to cover the nine 4-inch-wide openings in the stormwater drainsconstructed on Motilal Street, T. Nagar, on May 4.

Three of the nine gratings are already damaged and one of them ismissing.

The drains were constructed a couple of months ago by ChennaiCorporation but the drain openings were left open.

Last month an elderly woman resident of Motilal Street fractured herleg when it got caught in one of the openings.
