TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema and Music - 11N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

Vasanthakokilam used to live in a spacious bungalow on Eldam’sRoad, Teynampet (where Sachi also lived!) and later she relocatedin Gopalapuram where she died in the early 1950s with TB takingtoll of her.

She was only in her late forties when she died. Very fond offlowers, she used to wear loads of them in her hair! With M. S.Subbulakshmi and D. K. Pattammal reigning supreme in the worldof Carnatic music and with M . L. Vasanthakumari galloping fastto catch up with them, NCV was beginning to get sadly neglected.

Even today, when every Mary, Molly and Mohana releases audiocassettes of their music with fanfare and media hype, it is not easyto find audio cassettes of NCV’s music. Old-timers howeverremember her and her music and recall those gone-forever daysof sixty years ago when she was almost at the top of the heap.

MUSIRI SUBRAMANIA IYERA legend in his lifetime, a legend who still lives long after his

lamented demise and a colossus in the world of classical Carnaticmusic was Musiri Subramania Iyer, affectionately known tomillions of South Indians around the world as “Musiri”.

“Nagumomu”, ”Paahi Ramachandra Raghava”, ““ThiruvadiCharanam”, “Entha Vedukonthu O Raghava” are some of hisimmortal melodies, songs and “keerthanas” (classical composi-tions). Fortunately, these are still preserved in gramophone discsand audio cassette tapes as a part of the invaluable nationalheritage of Classical Indian Music.

Musiri was one of the tradition-bound conservative ClassicalCarnatic musicians but he appeared in a movie ‘Tukaram’ (Tamil,1938) against much protest, hue and cry from his compatriots.

In spite of ‘Tukaram’s success, he chose to forget all aboutmovies. When asked why by this writer many decades later, heexclaimed, “The women in cinema were bitches and the men weresons of bitches!” (His original remark in Thamizh was more colorfuland explosively expletive!)

He was surprisingly fluent and articulate in English, rare amongmusicians of his times and chimes. He was deeply interested inEnglish Literature and one of his favourite authors was D. H.Lawrence! And his favourite novel of Lawrence was, yeah, you, guessed it right, “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”, which had beenbanned in England at that time as being indecent.

This writer knew Musiri quite well and moved with him inti-mately in spite of the generation gap between them. The two metoften at a hideout in Meenambakkam en route to the Airport.Invariably Musiri would talk about “Lady C” and other novels ofLawrence such “Sons and Lovers” (also a controversial book!),“The Virgin and the Gypsy” and others.

He spoke in high flown English and one would get the impressionthat he was writing a book or dissertation! In spite of it all, somehave gone on record that he was not a formally educated man. Buthe told this writer that he had gone to college.

Musiri was a man of culture, charm, polish and old world valueswhich many musicians of that day did not possess! Indeed he wasthe first Carnatic musician to be allowed into the inner sanctumsanctorum of the Indian Civil Service (ICS) officers’ group of S. Y.Krishnaswamy, C. V. Narasimhan, high society ‘maamaas’ like T.T. Krishnamachari, top lawyers V. C. Gopalratnam, (this writer’sguru-in-law), V. L. Ethiraj, K. S. Jayarama Iyer, K. V.Krishnaswamy Iyer and other big wigs of good old Madras.

The westernized barrister Ethiraj often invited Musiri for break-fast at his palatial mansion in Egmore. He would attend Musiri’sconcerts dressed in veshti, jibba and angavastram, much to thesurprise of his pals who had seen him only in silk suits andbarrister’s legal robes in court! Such was the impact of Musiri’scharm and personality on his high class pals. Musiri, the man, wasas splendid as the musician!

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

Lawyer friend P. N. Prakash, who hadprosecuted violators of law and added to theovercrowding of the prisons, but defended theinnocents successfully, has, in an article inCurrent Tamil Nadu Cases dated March 21,2012, concluded his thesis with the moral,“Today’s justice system pampers the ac-cused and crushes the victim”.

The pampered ones, after a brief stay asthe guests of the State until a king’s-ran-som-fee-taking old bounders get the chapsout, go to fresh woods and pastures anew.Money is happiness!

In his research, Prakash collaborated withRajamanickam, one of the best Public Pros-ecutors that the Madras High Court everhad. The arena was not a pugilist’s enclosurefor the duo but a sorting floor for the discoveryof truth.

When the human bomb Dhanu changedthe history of India by taking Rajiv with her,Rajamanickam was appointed Special Pub-lic Prosecutor to conduct the prose-cution before the TADA Court which or-dered the famous Indian Rope Trick to 26 ofthe accused. Rajamanickam did not attendthe valedictory ritual of the verdict which, hesuspected, would exceed all norms. He wasright. The Supreme Court confirmed deathto only 4 among them, reduced the sentenceto life imprisonment to another 3, and ac-quitted the others.

Nalini, whose death sentence was con-firmed by the Supreme Court, was saved bySonia and allowed to live and she is now afrequent visitor to the High Court seekingtotal release.

Several Presidents having slept over themercy petitions of the 3 on the death row, this nearly-quarter-century-old casejustifies Rajamanickam’s high dudgeon onthe mass execution ordered by the trial court.17 of the conspirators were shot dead by thePolice in Konanamkunte in Karnataka. Isalute Rajamanickam’s memory and wouldrequest Prakash to substitute the moral tohis article with “Hang the death sentencebecause Man, which word covers the Statealso, has no right to kill”.
