MAMBALAM TIMES

The heroine of ‘Rajambal’ was an attractive young actress P.K.Saraswathi who was active and popular for sometime but latersadlyfaded into oblivion.

There was a vamp in the movie which was played bythe buxombosomy and oomph-rich Madhuri Devi, a successful star ofTamilCinema and a not so successful producer. The noted actor K.Sarangapani played the detective. The well-known writer -directorofhis day A. T. Krishnaswami wrote the screenplay based on thenovel andthe film was tautly told on screen with success. Balachandaras thesinful magistrate lent much charm to his portrayal. One of hiscatch-lines of dialogue, “Natesan’s plans never fail!” became popular.

Even though M. S. Gnanamani was the music director on record,R.M.Krishnaswami (RMK), as the producer-director, askedBalachandar toscore the background music score, which he did veryeffectively. Thatwas not all. He also composed a song, ‘Maadharmaniyey vaa….’, a duetwhich he sang himself with the popularplayback singerP. Leela. Thesong was inspired by famous Americansong number, “Baby, it’s coldoutside.”

This song, which won an Oscar Award for the Best Song of 1949,was from’’Neptune’s Daughter” featuring the stunning swimmingstar EstherWilliams, the well-known comedian of his dayRed Skelton, the much’macho’ man of moviesRicardo Montalban, famed characteractor KeenanWynn, and the famous band leader Xavier Cugat andhis orchestra. Thesong rendered by Skelton was one of the mostpopular hits of thatperiod not only in America but also elsewhere.(The lines, “Baby, it’scold outside!” were used as catch-line by manyyoung men on dates withtheir girlfriends!)

In that song the opening lines are spoken instead of being sungandtaking the cue from it, Balachander had many lines, which hespoke ina sing- song style with much impact. Many common expres-sions like ‘Marina Beach... Minerva Cinema’ were used in the songbyBalachandar. There was also a teasing kind of humming whichadded tothe appeal of the song.

The success and popularity of “Rajambal” brought more offerstoBalachander in major roles. Some of those movies included ‘Inspec-tor’(1953) and ‘Dr. Savithri’ (1955). He also directed some movieswhichattracted much attention like ‘Avan Amaran’ (1958) and in 1954hecreated Tamil film history with a trail-blazing movie, ‘AnthaNaal’.

‘Antha Naal’ was the first south Indian picture which did not havea song or dance. It was indeed a daring attempt by the producer, theIndian movie mogul AV. Meiyappan to do such a venture duringtheperiod when every Tamil movie had many songs and dances.Indeed eventhe background music score was limited in this film.

Sivaji Ganesanplayed the anti-hero role of a traitor while his wifewas the prettyactress and star Pandari Bai. The noted writer andactor ‘Javert’Sitaraman played the detective. Not many are awarethat this film wasbased on the British movie, ‘Woman In Question’(1949) made by theleading filmmaker Anthony Asquith (son of LordAsquith, a former PrimeMinister of Britain).

The presentation however was inspired by theJapanese movieClassic, ‘Rashomon’ (1951) which created a sensationin India whenit was screened during the first International FilmFestival of Indiaheld in 1952. The Akira Kurosawa classic won itsbrilliant makerworldwide recognition

Interestingly Sivaji Ganesan was not the first choice to play theleadrole. The film began with the well-known stage and screen actor,S. V.Sahasranamam. After a few reels were shot, the producer anddirectorfelt that SVS appeared too old for the role. In his place cameabrilliant actor from Calcutta, N. Viswanathan.Balachander wasnotmuch impressed by the newcomer’s performance, and exit theCalcuttaactor! By now, Sivaji Ganesan had just made a splash inmovies and hewalked into the meaty role.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, A slab coveringthe storm water drainon the narrow MadleyRoad service lane (T.Nagar) broke andcaved in more than afortnight ago.

It is an importantlink for pedestriansand motorists to thevegetable market,Ranganathan Streetand Mambalam Rail-way station.

I complained toMetrowater officialsbut no action has beentaken so far to close

Open drain on Madley Road service lane poses dangerto road users

the opening. A couple of days ago, an elderly man tripped on the opening and

hurt himself. The rear wheel of a tempo had got struck in the openingon Jan. 9 and passersby had to push the vehicle to get it moving.

Following complaints from passersby, traffic police have nowplaced a barricade on top of the opening to warn the road users.

However the barricade now poses an obstruction to 4-wheelerswhich need to take a U-turn back into Madley Road.

I appeal to Metrowater to take immediate action and close thedrain to avoid any future mishaps. – N. Ramanathan, VeerasamyStreet, West Mambalam

Sir, The pavementin Pondy Bazaar

Silt dumped on pavement in Pondy Bazaar

which was re-laid recently has already gotdamaged in a number of places.

Silt from the adjoining storm water drainwhich has been dumped for more than tendays on the pavement is producing a foulsmell and is a health hazard. There is nobarricade between the open drain and thepavement which poses a risk to pedestrians, especially at night. This photo was taken infront of my house. I appeal to the concernedauthorities to remove the silt, close the drain and also barricade the pavement. – Sunil, OldNo. 66, Pondy Bazaar, T. Nagar.

TNEB shut down power in MotilalStreet without intimation

Sir, - On Jan. 8, at around 5.45 p.m., there wasa sudden outage of power in threeresidential apartments in Motilal Street, TNagar.

It was observed by the residents that thepower was switched off by EB staff to connect apower cable coming from an upcoming commer-cial complex nearby to the junction box supply-ing current to the three apartments.

Power was restored after almost two hours. Itis surprising that no prior intimation was given. When a resident accosted an EB official about it,he said that they were just following orders oftheir superiors.

Considering that the work is still underprogress in the commercial complex, and it maytake many more months before it becomes func-tional, what was the hurry to do the powerconnection during the late hours of the day? Itcould have been done during daytime as well.

I request TNEB to give prior notice to theresidents about power outage in the future be-fore carrying out any major work – V. S.Jayaraman, Secretary, Motilal Street Resi-dents’ Welfare Association, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Badly coordinated Aadhar datacollection inconveniences residentsSir, I want to obtain Aadhar card for my

family. My apartment on 7th Avenue, AshokNagar, was missed out in the census in 2010 andI do not have the receipt.

When the camp started in September last yearand since I did not have the receipt, I was told byan official to fill and submit a census form to beprocured from Corporation Zone 10 office(Ambedkar Road). The form was not available inthe Zone 10 office and could I get it from any-where else. After recently reading a press re-lease about the availability of forms and regis-tering of biometric data, I went again to theoffice on Jan. 28. The staff this time told me tocome later as the concerned staff who did thebiometric photo work were on strike. There wasa large crowd and the officials were struggling tomanage it.

Why is the work not being coordinated orstreamlined before making public announce-ments? With Aadhaar card to be made manda-tory, they can ask residents to fill up the formwith copies of relevant documents and give ap-pointments for collecting biometric data. I re-quest the concerned authorities to make properarrangements in its offices in the city beforemaking public announcements to avoid resi-dents from being hassled. – Thiagarajan, 85,7th Avenue, Ashok Nagar
