With mangoes, the mostpopular fruit during summer, beginning to arrive in Chennai, the Corporation is preparingto curb the sale of fruits rip-ened using chemicals.

According to Dr. P. Kuganan-tham (Health Officer), teamsof Health Department officialshave been sensitised andtrained to identify and seizemangoes that have been rip-ened artificially. In the last fewyears, some fruit vendors werefound selling mangoes ripenedusing calcium carbide.

The last few years have seenthe Chennai Corporation con-ducting raids on godowns andstorage points of fruits everysummer. “We have been adop-ting the practice for the lastfour years. We seized over 150tonnes of mangoes in a yearand over 25 tonnes of calciumcarbide kept in some of thegodowns,” Dr. Kugananthamsaid.

Food inspectors, along withsanitary inspectors, will con-duct raids at different pointsacross the 10 zones of the Cor-poration, including the whole-sale market in Koyambedu.

lems.A team of officials of the

Corporation’s Health Depart-ment is in the process of iden-tifying godowns that will stockhuge quantities of mangoes.“We will start picking up sam-ples after the season peaks. The season has just begun,”Dr. Kuganantham said.

S. Srinivasan (President,Wholesale Fruits Commis-sion Agents Association,Koyambedu) welcomed theCorporation’s initiative to raid, seize and destroy fruits rip-

Mangoes that have been rip-ened prematurely can be spot-ted easily, say officials. Thesmell, the sheen of the skin andthe taste will easily give awaythe use of chemicals, if any.“Premature ripening is also donefor papayas and bananas,” Dr.Kuganantham said. Such fruitscan have serious health impli-cations, he added.

While symptoms such asvomiting and diarrhoea arecommon among children whoeat such fruits, adults mightsuffer gastrointestinal prob-

ened artificially. He said, “Af-ter they started the raids, thereis more awareness and suppli-ers are forced to be cautious. That helps us ensure betterquality.”

While a reasonable stock ofmangoes produced in differentparts of Tamil Nadu andKerala, including Salem,Tenkasi and Palakkad hasbegun making its way into thelocal market, wholesalers arewaiting for supplies fromAndhra Pradesh. “It is takingtime. I think it is due to climatechange. What we usually re-ceive in March comes only inMay these days,” Srinivasansaid.

Depending on the quality, one kg of the Banganapallivariety of mangoes is pricedbetween Rs. 40 and 80. Imam-pasand variety costs betweenRs. 80 and100.

Srinivasan said, “Alphonsoor the variety we call Guavahere comes from Ratnagiri,Pune and Mumbai. These vari-eties are slowly coming in andwe hope to have a good sea-son.” Report: courtesy TheHindu.

THE AVM STORY - 63

The reel-life brothers in ‘Bhai Bhai’ were played by the real-life brothers Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar, top stars ofIndian Cinema. This brilliant casting by Meiyappan addedextra impact and interest to the film.

Ashok Kumar Ganguly was perhaps the only movie star inIndia to enjoy the longest innings, dating back to 1936, and wasalmost always at the top. Born into a well-placed lawyer’sfamily in Bhagalpur in Bihar, he too studied law but gave upsuch a career to land in movies in Bombay as a LaboratoryAssistant in the famous Bombay Talkies. Here he had a breakas actor in the milestone movie and film classic ‘Achhut Kanya’(1936) opposite the ‘Grand Dame of Indian Cinema’, DevikaRani. The film dealt with the controversial love affair betweena high-born Brahmin youth (Ashok Kumar) and a low-born‘untouchable’girl (Devika Rani) and the complications thatarise over such socially condemned relationship. However thesuccess of ‘Achhut Kanya’ did not bestow immediate stardomon Ashok Kumar.

As Devika Rani was not impressed with him, he was laterpaired with Leela Chitnis, and his films with her -‘Bandhan’(1941) and ‘Naya Sansar’ (1941) - made him a star. Then came ‘Kismet’(1943) and its phenomenal box-office record-creating success made Ashok Kumar a big name and an all-India star. Since then he never looked back.

He turned producer and also directed a few films but he wasalways a star. His cinematic style of underplayed actingbrought him fame and name, and his long and impressive trackrecord made him an icon of Indian Cinema as an evergreenperson. His fine films include ‘Humayun’(1945), ‘Mahal’(1949),‘Samadhi’(1950), ‘Afsana’(1950), ‘Deedar’ (1950), ‘Chalti KaNaam Ghadi’(1958), ‘Howrah Bridge’(1958), ‘Gumrah’(1963),‘Oonche Log’(1965), ‘Aradhana’(1965), ‘Rajnigantha’ (1966)and many others.

Kishore Kumar (1929-1987), his younger brother, was amulti-faced personality and had a wide range of talents. Actor, singer, music composer and producer, his fame still persists asan off-screen ‘play-back’ singer. An icon of Hindi film music, hesang thousands of songs and many of them became immortalmelodies of Indian Cinema. His song ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ in themusical super hit ‘Aradhana’ is an all time favourite of HindiCinema. He had lent voice for singing to almost every hero ofHindi Cinema of his time, and particularly Dev Anand!

Besides the famous brothers, others in the cast of ‘Bhai Bhai’included the star-mother of Hindi Cinema, Nirupa Roy, Shama,an excellent character actor, Om Prakash and others. Shama,an attractive star, played the ‘other woman’ who lures awaythe elder brother (Ashok Kumar) from his devoted wife (NirupaRoy).

At first the well-known Hindi actress, Meena (1920-1987),the star of the hit film ‘Ek Thi Ladki’(1950), was cast as theother woman. (After the thumping success of ‘Ek Thi Ladki’,she came to be known as ‘the laara lappa girl’, thanks to the hitnumber ‘Laara lappa....’, a catchy melody that made filmhistory!) After a few reels were shot with Meena, Meiyappanand the directors Krishnan-Panju felt that she, with her roly-poly figure, was not the right choice to play the seductress!Indeed Nirupa Roy, with her good looks and slim figure, ap-peared more attractive than the vamp! Ever a perfectionist,Meiyappan did not hesitate to replace Meena with Shama.

After the success of ‘Bhai Bhai’, Meiyappan decided toproduce Hindi films regularly, and his second film in 1956 was‘Chori Chori’. It featured the most famous pair in IndianCinema, Raj Kapoor- Nargis. Both had come to be hailed asicons of Indian Cinema.

Out of an eligible vote bank of four in my family, son Devanand hasbeen enticed as Associate Creative Director by the Bangalore officeof the advertisement giant Ogilvy & Mather, whose kitty did notprovide for his left index finger uglification in Chennai at their expense.

May be Anna Hazare will have one more arrow to shoot at the rankcommercialism of the charade of elections where there is a denial bymere office rule of one’s constitutional right and duty to vote for evenBoris Karloff if, in one’s eyes, he is the redeemer and he hasn’t heardof Spectrum G and its disciples, devotees and adherents.

Somebody asked me if this Anna is related to the original Annaduraiwho wrested what was then Madras Presidency from the Congressand spawned iconoclastic adherents, who changed the face andpolitics of Tamil Nadu. But Anna imbibed tobacco snuff more thanoxygen and left the throaty gang in the lurch, leaving for posterity abrainy legacy. I don’t know if this Anna Hazare can hold a candle tothe original Anna whom even his enemies - and there were many -deified as ‘Arignar’, the ‘know-all’.

The Maharashtrian Anna (wearing the Gandhi cap, which theoriginal Gandhi is not alleged to have worn) may be a historical fadstarted by a colleague who failed to copy anything peculiar toAnnadurai. The quick-fix historian wanted an approximation to theTamil legend and tweeted Anna-2 to the fore, promising a lot of fun.

Stories are doing the rounds that this Hazare is closely related toone of our greatest batsmen ever, Vijay Hazare, who captained Indiaagainst Australia in the 1950s. He scored a century in each inningsagainst Australia when that country had demon bowlers like Lindwall,Miller and co .He had a funny round arm bowling action like LasithMalinga’s which was very effective .If a drop of cricket can beinsinuated in any circumstance, even the great American TeacherCarnegie who wrote ‘How to win friends and influence people’ wouldaward one an honoris causa Doctorate. We have literally a millionsuch geniuses who have been victimized into printing letter-headssporting this fake degree. Anna 2 looks too honest to stoop to conquer.Let’s leave that to politicians, what?
