Getting organized is the first step toward a

successful year

The amount of work expected in middle school can be

daunting to a child. Here are some ways to help your

child get organized:

A planner or calendar to track assignments,

activities, project due dates and test dates.

Different colored binders or folders (one for each

subject) to store papers and materials.

A well-supplied desk or storage box. Middle

schoolers waste time trying to find needed supplies.

Avoid this by keeping supplies in one place. Have

your child tell you when he needs more of something.

A timer. Have your child determine how much

time he plans to study before he takes a break. Then

have him set the timer and work until it rings. Try

this for phone and computer time, too.

Healthy Habits

Make breakfast a family priority

Most children need breakfast to do their

best in school. Yet breakfast remains the

meal that middle schoolers are most

likely to skip. To make sure your child

eats breakfast:

Prepare the night before. Breakfast

can be a premade sandwich your child

can grab as he goes out the door.

Put it in a glass. Blend fruit and yogurt with some milk and juice.

Make it interesting. Keep your child’s

favorite healthy breakfast items on hand.

STUDENTS LEAVING EARLY:

If you know that your child will be leaving early for an

appointment or going out of town etc. we ask that you call ahead

of time and preferably before the day starts so we can get them a

pass at the beginning of the day. This way it cuts down on the

amount of disruptions we have in the classroom during the day!

We will get your student a pass and they will meet you in the

office at the time requested. We do ask that you

come in and sign your student out!

Memorial Office Hours: 7:30am—4:30pm

ATTENDANCE LINE

When calling in absences for the day

or in advance we ask that you use our

attendance line. It is available 24/7

and it is very quick and convenient.

We ask that you leave your students

name, grade and reason for absence.

We thank you for your help in keeping

the office lines open!

Health 101: Important!

Keep Your Children Healthy

NOTICE: The State Department of Health is no longer providing free flu vaccine to schools, which means the Sioux Falls School District will not be holding flu shot clinics in the middle and high schools this year. Families should contact their health care provider for the flu vaccine.

Seasonal colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses are unwelcome interruptions to our lives. Encour-age your child to practice the following prevention tips:

Avoid close contact with those who are sick. Don’t share food/drinks.

Cover coughs and sneezes. Help keep germs from circulating-cover your nose with a tissue when sneezing and dispose tissues properly. When coughing, cover your mouth with your arm, not your hand.

Wash your hands periodically with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when you’re not near a sink.

Avoid touching your face. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, drink plenty of fluids, manage stress and eat nutri-tious foods.

Get a flu vaccine, it’s not too late!

Looking to Declutter? This year, Memorial Library is launching Memorial Makers! What is a makerspace? A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. We are looking for donations of the following items: Legos K’nex Sewing Machine Yarn Crochet Hooks Knitting Needles Embroidery Floss If you have any of these items to donate, please drop them off in the office at Memorial or email at [email protected] for pickup! Thank you for helping to get Memorial Makers off the ground!!

It’s important to us that your child is supervised at all times. We have supervision from 8:00 until 4:00, and request that students who are here after 4:00 be

involved in an event that provides supervision.

(e.g. the Y-Club, athletics, or homework help.) Please help us by arranging rides for your chil-dren right after school, and reminding them that they need to be checked into a supervised event or else on their way home by 4:00.
