Metrowater to add 90 more6000-liter tankers to its fleet

After appeals from the residents of West Mambalam and T. Nagar,Metrowater has decided to add 90 more 6000-liter water tankers to itsfleet to meet the demand. As of now, every time a resident makes abooking for a 6,000-liter tanker, the sender gets an automated mes-sage that says only 50 bookings are allowed and the resident will haveto book a 9,000-liter tanker.

The booking can be done only between 6 a.m and 6 p.m, with optionsof 6,000 liters at Rs. 475 and 9,000 liters at Rs. 700.

Narayanaswamy (resident of Motilal Street, T. Nagar) toldMambalam Times that the 6,000-liter tankers get booked withinminutes of the opening time, and he is forced to book 9,000 liters whichleads to wastage of 3000 liters as his sump’s capacity is only 6,000liters.

When contacted, Metrowater officials said that the agency has 654water tankers of which 225 are of 6,000-liter capacity. Each of the 15zones has about a dozen 6,000-liter tankers, but they are mostly usedto supply water to narrow streets and slums. “So, we are not able tomeet other residents’ demands,” said the official.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORLocal cable TV operator fleeces customers

Sir, As per the new TRAI ruling effective fromMarch 1, cable operators like SCV/KAL CablesP. Ltd., Chennai have announced their new tariffin their website www.scv.in.

Compared to the local cable operator (LCO)VMA charges mentioned in the website, the LCOlocated in Kripasankari Street, West Mambalam, which provides us connection, charges more.

For example, while the prescribed monthlytariff for SCV Tamil Silver Pack including GST isRs. 234.82, the LCO is demanding Rs.270. It is notproviding any clarification for charging the higheramount. It also charges more for a new Set TopBox than prescribed by SCV. If we refuse to paythe difference, important channels are cut.

As this LCO is powerful in our area, we are notable to take a connection from other LCOs whocollect the correct charge.

I appeal to SCV to monitor the local cableoperators to ensure that they do not fleececustomers. Raa Kaysh, 32/33-2, UmapathyStreet, West Mambalam, Ph: 98412 97765

Stray cattle problem in Cart Track RoadSir, There is an increase in the number of stray

cattle in Cart Track Road, Gandhi Street andnearby roads. They roam freely and often squatin groups in the middle of the road or onpavements. They are a danger to both motoristsand pedestrians. Elderly persons fear walking onthese roads. Recently, my neighbour was attackedby a cow and had to spend a few days in hospital.

The residents have made many representationsto the Corporation authorities, but no action hasbeen taken to rid the roads of the cattle nuisance. Will the authorities concerned take immediateaction? P. K. Subramanian, Aishwarya Apts.,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar. Ph: 98402 93321.

Cyclerickshaws ideal for short distancesSir, Due to the unsafe condition of pavements

in the neighbourhood, senior citizens are oftenforced to hire an autorickshaw even for shortdistances like visits to nearby temples, shops, doctors or banks.

From the auto drivers’ point of view, they wantto avoid short trips due to economic factors or theydemand a minimum of Rs. 50 for short trips.

I had recently visited Noida near Delhi wherethere is an abundance of cyclerickshaws whichare comfortable, affordable and charge betweenRs. 10 and Rs. 20 depending on the distance. Itwould be an ideal mode of transport forneighbourhoods like Mambalam and T. Nagar, especially for the elderly, women and even schoolchildren. It will also open up another mode ofearning for needy persons. K. Vaidyanathan,Godsend Apts., 15/1, North Usman Road, T.Nagar, Ph: 2815 6891.

No common pattern in relaying roadsSir, In the area where I reside in T. Nagar, no

scientific pattern is followed while relaying roads. While I understand that Maharajapuram

Santhanam Salai was relaid with concrete surfacedue to the high volume of traffic, I wonder whya small dead-end street close by which hardly hasany traffic was also relaid with concrete surface. At the same time, the busy Cart Track Road whichis a feeder road to Nehru Street, Wasan Street,Gandhi Street and Ramachandra Street has abitumen surface and gets damaged frequentlydue to the heavy and high traffic. The authoritiesconcerned should take the extent of traffic on aroad before deciding whether to relay withconcrete or bitumen. Also, to prevent digging ofnewly laid roads, there should be coordinationwith other civic departments like Metrowaterand TNEB to ensure that all their work on theroad is completed before relaying it. P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321.

Will the 5th reservoir mitigateChennai’s water problem?

Sir, I was pleased to read the recent report thatChennai, which is facing severe drought situation, will get its 5th reservoir at Thervoy Kandigai-Kannankottai in Thiruvallur District by Octoberthis year.

It can store 500 million cubic feet of water.Water from the reservoir will be transported

through a 66-km. long pipeline to Poondi reservoir, from where it will be used for drinking watersupply.

I hope that it will mitigate the regular waterproblem faced by the citizens of Chennai. I alsoappeal to the Govt. to take initiatives for the nextreservoir as it could take another six years forcompletion. V. S. Narayanaswamy, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Aadhaar details not mandatoryfor cremation

Sir, I recently visited the family of a deceasedperson to convey my condolences. I heard thefamily members saying that they had to submitcopy of the Aadhaar and the photograph of thedeceased at the crematorium to facilitatecremation.

After returning home, I sent an email to theCommissioner, Chennai Corporation, informinghim of the problem. I promptly got a replystating ‘Corporation does not seek either the copyof the Aadhaar or the Aadhaar details and thephotograph of the deceased’. I further receivedan email from the officials stating that therespective officer of the zone had visited the saidburial ground and instructed the workers not toask for Aadhaar or the photograph of the deceasedin the future.

I appreciate the prompt action taken byChennai Corporation and also wish to inform thereaders of Mambalam Times that there is no needto submit Aadhaar details of the deceased atcremation grounds, and they should contacthigher officials if the caretaker demands thesame. I also suggest to Chennai Corporation toaffix notices at cremation grounds to that effect.V. S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Owners suffer due to inaction on appeals against property tax revisionSir, Chennai Corporation has announced that those who have not paid the property tax for

the 2nd half of 2018-19 (October-2018 to March-2019) will be treated as defaulters as the taxfor the period became payable by Oct 10, 2018.

The Corporation has also appealed to all the ‘property tax defaulters’ to pay the taximmediately to avoid punitive action.

It may be noted that the Corporation has revised the property tax with effect from April2018 and the information to this effect through demand notices was passed on to the propertyholders by August/Sept 2018. While many have received the notices, there are a large numberof assessees who are yet to get the notices informing them of the revision in the tax.

Many who received the notices have gone in appeal as the revision is either steep or thereis disparity in revision in the same flat complex/street/colony. Further, in certain cases, therevision has been based on the change in the occupancy from owner to tenant. This again isfraught with errors as the civic body has erroneously treated many owner-occupied houses/flats as tenant-occupied leading to a higher revision in tax.

Even after the lapse of over 5 months, many have not received any feedback to the appealsmade by them.

Under the above circumstances, how can the Corporation treat those property owners whohave in fact paid the tax for the period 2018-19 in full, based on the previous rate of tax, asdefaulters? Even here, the delay in payment of tax is due to the non-receipt of reply to theappeals

Further, a number of residential apartments in various streets abutting Usman Road, T.Nagar have been bought by commercial complex owners. It is not known how the Corporationtreats these apartments in terms of levying property tax?

Taking the above facts into consideration, I appeal to Chennai Corporation not to victimizehonest property tax payers and first close all pending appeals before taking any punitive action.T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Petition seeks permanentrecognition for private schools

The Madras High Court has issued notice toTamilnadu Government on a plea seekinggranting of permanent recognition to privateschools in the state instead of the temporarylicense which has to be renewed every year.

Admitting the plea moved by All India PrivateEducational Institutions Association, JusticeD. Krishnakumar directed the School EducationDepartment to file its response in four weeks.

According to the petitioner, the Tamil NaduRecognized Private Schools (Regulation) Actand the Rules framed thereunder do not havea restriction on the number of years.

In Tamilnadu, however, only temporaryrecognition is granted to schools with a riderthat it should be renewed every year, theAssociation said alleging that such a stand isarbitrary, unreasonable and unconstitutional.

“Right to establish an educational institutionis a fundamental right and restricting andforcing institutions to beg for recognition everyyear is unreasonable. Authorities can inspectinstitutions in case of any complaint or evenperiodically and take appropriate action underthe Act if necessary. When there is no provisionunder the Act to restrict the period ofrecognition, the authorities cannot exercise anon-existing power,” the petitioner argued.
