Sir, It has nearly been amonth since the inaugurationof the left arm of Rangaraja-puram flyover and yet the stateof Mambalam High Roadremains unchanged.

For decades the road was notmotorable owing to encroach-ments.

Even though the bridge is

Mambalam High Road continues to be a nightmarecompleted, the road is still notpaved and remains a dirt track.

The recent rains have furtheradded to the woes. Boulders, rocks and debris dumped duringthe flyover construction are yetto be removed.

Encroachments block theentire stretch of the road fromRangarajapuram RailwayGate to Duraiswamy Subway.

Though several articles haveappeared in the media, nomeasures have been taken toaddress the problem.

Eateries and other vendorsdump garbage all over the placewhich poses a serious healthhazard to the local residents.

Once the road is re-laid andencroachments are removed,it can carry a significantamount of traffic away fromUsman Road.

I request the authorities towake up to the situation andrid Mambalam High Road ofencroachments and re-lay it. –Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road,T.Nagar.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 34

Others in the cast in ‘Seva Sadanam’ included Jayalakshmi,Varadachar, B. A.(Hons), Ram Pyari, K. N. Kamalam. G.Pattu Iyer, S. S. Mani Bhagavathar (a close relative ofPapanasam Sivan) and ‘Baby’ Varalakshmi (later, known asS. Varalakshmi, noted Tamil and Telugu film star) andSeethalakshmi Ammal, a real-life Brahmin widow with shavenhead and all, who played the cruel sister-in-law, an unusual anddaring casting indeed by the visionary filmmaker! Not surpris-ingly, it created sensation in the Brahmin community ofThanjavur district!

Lyrics and music were by Papanasam Sivan and his brotherP. Rajagopala Iyer (father of V. N. Janaki, latter-day moviestar, Mrs. MGR in private life and also Chief Minister of TamilNadu for a few days in 1980s). Rajagopala Iyer composedmusic on his own for some films and also played minor roles.Overshadowed by the gargantuan glory and fame of his brother,he is barely known today. Music direction, background scoreand orchestra arrangement were done by Mothi Babu.

Expectedly, most of the songs in this film were sung by MSS.Those included ‘Shyama Sundara Kamala Vadana’ (adaptedfrom the Hindi song, ‘Shyama Sundara Madana Mohana’),‘Aadharavatravarkatkellaam’, ‘Needhu Charana Pankaja’(Ragam Kalyani), ‘Enna Seiven Enge Selven’ (RagamSriranjani, adapted from the popular kirtanam ‘Maarubalka’).And the most popular of them all, ‘Maa Ramanan UmaRamanan’ (Ragam Hindolam).

‘Maa Ramanan’ is a favourite in Carnatic music concertstoday. Not many are aware that this famous song was com-posed by Papanasam Sivan for ‘Naveena Sadhaaram’ (1935,K. Subramanyam) as an invocation at the start of the film.Sivan and S. S .Mani sang it off-screen.

During the 1930s, many Tamil films had such invocationsongs in the first reel, off-screen, following the tradition of stageplays. The lyrics for these songs had words seeking god’sblessings for the production company and the director. Eventoday many stage troupes sing in chorus the prayer songbehind the curtain and break coconuts and burn camphorbefore the curtain rises on the play.

Regretfully no gramophone record of this rare rendering wasmade and is sadly lost forever. Of course, no print of the filmexists. Sivan played Kuchela in the film. S. D. Subbulakshmi(Mrs. Subramanyam in private life) played the unusual doubleroles as Lord Krishna and Susheela, Kuchela’s wife and motherof the brood of 27 children!

When most films in those days were shot in studios on sets,Subramanyam, in an innovative move, shot some scenes in apalatial bungalow on Venkatanarayana Road, ThyagarayaNagar, Madras. It belonged to a successful medical practitio-ner of the city, Dr. U. L. Narayana Rao.

Interestingly Dr. Rao was involved in films for a short whileas partner in the historic Kannada film, ‘ Bhaktha Dhruva’(1934, the first Kannada-talking film to be launched butreleased as the second a few months after Y. V. Rao’s ‘ SatiSulochana’.).

Large crowds of silk sari-diamond-and-gold studded ‘madisaar’mamis of Mambalam, Mylapore, Triplicane and even distantGeorge Town thronged the doctor’s bungalow to get a ‘close-up’view of MSS! The legend was already growing…..!

‘Seva Sadanam’ was a major hit of 1938 and MSS took thetop honors as expected. Her star began to rise fast on the famehorizon. Interestingly, K. Subramanyam came in for brickbatstoo besides bouquets! The orthodox sections of the Brahmincommunity of Thanjavur took him to task for portraying thecommunity in bad light and excommunicated him! He did notcare a damn and felt only amused. A leading lawyer of Mylapore, hailing from Thanjavur, later a judge of the Supreme Court inDelhi, refused to share the same compartment withSubramanyam in the train to Delhi, canceled his ticket andwent home! This incident happened decades after the film wasreleased. Such was His Lordship’s prejudice against the dy-namic filmmaker!

Train your dog to enjoyDeepavaliBy Dr. K. A. Vijayaraghavan

Kids start firing crackers and sparklers a week before Deepavali andthis continues upto Karthigai Deepam.

During this cracker season, your pets get frightened of the sounds, and tend to take shelter under the cots in dark rooms.

Some dogs are so cared of these sounds that they do not even comeout for answering nature’s calls, and some even go off during theDeepavali season.

Is it not a pity that, when you and your family are enjoying the lightsand sounds, your pets should spend their time in isolation and indarkness?

It is possible for you to train your dog also to enjoy the lights andsounds, and also the good food during this festival season.

The best approach will be to hold the dog and make it watch while thesparklers and crackers go on, so that it will slowly cast off the fear forthem. Do not at all allow it to go under the cot. Your holding it will helpthe dog give up its fear gradually.

This is very much like training your pet dog to walk on the road. If yourpet had been mostly an indoor dog and if you take it out on the road allon sudden it will get scared of the vehicles and the crowd on the road.

If you take it out for short distances regularly, it will cast off the fearand start walking boldly on the road.

So, what is needed is a gradual exposure of your pet dog to the lightsand sounds associated with Deepavali.

Do not feed your dog with too many sweets during the season. Aftergiving a sweet or two, give it a raw carrot so that its teeth will getcleaned. If the dog allows it, clean its teeth with vinegar after it hasconsumed some sweets.

Do’s and dont’s for safehandling of crackers

During Deepavali celebrations children get injured due to carelesshandling of fireworks. Parents are indirectly responsible for theseaccidents as they fail to educated and guide the children on the correctways of handling fireworks.

The Loss Prevention Association of India Ltd. (LPA), for the past fewyears, has been guiding children and elders on the proper ways ofhandling fireworks.

Simple rules of safety as described in the Safety Bulletin of the LossPrevention Association are as follows:

Don’t light crackers inside the house, or light candles and oil lampsnear curtains or any other combustible material.

Hold sparklers away from the body.Light rockets pointing them straight up.Never light fireworks from balconies or near buildings: use open

grounds.Don’t bend over fireworks while lighting them: light them from the

side.Don’t wear long, loose, thin flowing dresses while playing with fire-

works.Never put fireworks in pockets.Never light fireworks under confinement in a metal container.Never light a flower pot by holding it.Never store fireworks or unpack them near a flame or a heat source.Never return to a firework once lit – it may explode in your face.Pour water over burns and go to a doctor. Don’t apply ointment,

butter or any oily substance.Show concern for infants, the aged and the sick. Don’t light loud

crackers near them.
