API (American Petroleum Institute) system for classifying engineoilsThe SAE classification does not define the quality of the oil. Quality classification of oils requires anumber of tests of various kinds, both in laboratories and under real-world conditions. These are

conducted in collaboration between vehicle and engine manufacturers and oil companies. The resultsof these tests are used to define the requirements for lubricating oils and the quality classes underlyingoil recommendations for vehicles and engines. In the API classification, the quality of engine oil is de-termined by means of engine tests which include checks on wear and contamination of cylinder walls, piston rings, bearings and valve mechanisms, soot and cinder formation, corrosion and oilacidification.

Petrol enginesThe API classifies the performance of petrol engines into various classes.

SA, SB, SC, SD, SE, SF, SG and SH: No longer used.

SE: Typical requirement for petrol engines built 1972–1980.

SF: Typical requirement for petrol engines built 1980-1988.

SG: Demands better wear, cleanness, soot formation and service life attributes than earlier classifica-tions. A quality requirement for many vehicles from 1989 onwards.

SH: Engines built 1996 and earlier. Engine tests and limits same as class SG, but very strictly definedand monitored testing methods make it much more demanding.

SJ: Engines built 2001 and earlier. Engine tests and limits same as class SH, but with requirements forlower evaporation and lower phosphorus content.

SL: Engines built 2004 and earlier. Engine tests and limits same as class SH, but with tougher require-ments concerning deposits at high temperatures and for lower petrol consumption.

SM: Quality class that came into use in 2004. For all engines now in use. In this classification, oil ac-idification, consumption and deposit prevention properties have been improved, along with performan-ce at low temperatures and fuel economy. Some oils in this classification may also meet the latestILSAC GF requirement for fuel economy. In petrol engines, it is always possible to use oils of higherquality than that recommended by the manufacturer. Obviously, older engines were not required tomeet quality classes that were not introduced until later. It can only be beneficial to use a modern oil ofbetter quality.

Diesel enginesCA, CB, CC, CD, CD-II and CE: No longer used.

CC: Light diesel operation. This oil contains additives against deposits caused by high temperaturesand against rust and corrosion.

CD: Heavily loaded four-stroke diesel engines. Effective additives against wear and deposits andagainst rust and corrosion from the use of fuels of varying quality.

CD-II: 2-stroke diesel engines.

CE: Meets the requirements of earlier classes and has also been developed specifically for situationswhere the engine has to be run at low speeds under very heavy loads or at high speeds under heavyloads.

CF-4: Exceeds CE requirements for oil consumption and piston contamination.

CF-2: 2-stroke diesel engines; supersedes C-II.

Classification of 2-stroke engine oilThe performance of 2-stroke engines is expressed by the API, ISO, JASO or NNMA classification. Aswith 4-stroke oil, the classification is determined with the aid of engine and laboratory tests.

API TA (ISO-L-ETA): 2-stroke engines for mopeds, lawn mowers and other low-powered machines.Generally under 50 cc.

API TB (ISO-L-ETB): The lubricating effect of the oil is sufficient for things like low-powered mo-torcycles and scooters. No longer used. Generally 50-200 cc.

API TC (ISO-L-ETC): Engines that may be susceptible to damage from premature ignition and wherethe oil needs to work at very high temperatures without the piston rings seizing. The performance ofthe oil is also sufficient for lubricating high-powered motorcycles, snowmobiles and chain saws. Gene-rally 50–500 cc.

API TCS: As API TC, but the product is synthetic API TD (ISO-L-ETD): For lubricating outboardengines. No longer used.

JASO FB / ISO-L-EGB: Low-quality oil.

JASO FC / ISO-L-EGC: Minimum requirement for Japanese engine manufacturers.

JASO FCS: As JASO FC, but the product is synthetic.

ISO-L-EGD: 2-stroke oils with excellent cleaning properties and higher performance at hightemperatures.

NMMATC-W3: Outboard engine oil. Supersedes API TD.

ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association)classification system for engine oilsThe ACEA is an industry association for European automotive manufacturers, and the successor to theprevious organisation, the CCMC. One task of the organisation is to develop classifications for engineoils with particular reference to European engines and operating conditions. Engine oils are dividedinto three groups: petrol engine oils for cars and vans (prefixed A), diesel engine oils for cars and vans(B) and diesel engine oils for heavy trucks (E). To meet the requirements for a quality class, the oilmust pass both laboratory and engine tests. The laboratory tests cover things like the viscosity of theoil, its propensity to foam, shear stability and rust properties. The engine tests check things like the ab-ility of the oil to prevent bearing corrosion, piston ring seizure and camshaft and cylinder wall wear. The ACEA classification of engine oils came into effect in 1996, when the earlier CCMC classes G4,G5, PD2, D4 and D5 disappeared.

Petrol engines and light diesel enginesThe ACEA ‘A’ classes 1–5 are intended for petrol engine oils, while the ‘B’ classes 1–5 are for dieselengine oils. From 1996 onwards, ACEA A and ACEA B were separate, but in 2004 they were combi-ned into A/B classes and now apply to both petrol and diesel engines.

A1/B1: Petrol and diesel engines that use low-friction and low-viscosity oil.

A2/B2: Obsolescent, but still applicable for older engines.

A3/B3: Stable high-performance oils that retain their viscosity, for use in petrol or diesel engines withlong oil-change intervals and/or heavy use and/or where low viscosity is needed all year round.

A3/B4: Stable oils that retain their viscosity for petrol or direct-injection diesel engines. Also suitablefor use where class A3/A4 oil is required.

A5/B5: Stable high-performance oils that retain their viscosity, for use in petrol or diesel engines withlong oil-change intervals where low-friction and low-viscosity oil is needed.

Oils for light trucksIn 2004 a new ‘C’ classification was also introduced for oil for catalytic converters:

C1: Stable, high-performance oils that retain their viscosity and are suitable for catalytic converters, for use in petrol and diesel engines in vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and three-way cata-lytic converters (TWCs) and where low-friction and low-viscosity SAPS oil is required. These oils pro-long the service life of the DPF and TWC and offer fuel savings.

C2: Stable, high-performance oils that retain their viscosity and are suitable for catalytic converters, for use in petrol and diesel engines in vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and three-way cata-lytic converters (TWCs) and where low-friction and low-viscosity oil is required. These oils prolongthe service life of the DPF and TWC and offer fuel savings.

C3: Stable, high-performance oils that retain their viscosity and are suitable for catalytic converters, for use in petrol and diesel engines in vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and three-way cata-lytic converters (TWCs). These oils prolong the service life of DPF and TWC.

C4: Stable, high-performance low-SAPS oils that retain their viscosity and are suitable for catalyticconverters, for use in petrol and diesel engines in vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) andthree-way catalytic converters (TWCs). These oils prolong the service life of the DPF and TWC.

Heavy diesel enginesE2: Basic quality oils for diesel engines with or without turbo. Mainly for engines that work under nor-mal operating conditions and without extended oil change intervals.

E4: Very high-performance oil particularly in terms of piston cleanness and cylinder polishing. Theseoils also have very good soot handling and wear prevention properties. Recommended for engines thatmeet Euro 1, 2, 3 and 4 standards and work under tough operating conditions or with very long oilchange intervals. Mainly used for engines without particulate filters and other exhaust gas cleaningsystems.

E6: Very high-performance oil, similar to E4, but with low SAPS content. Recommended for enginesthat meet Euro 1, 2, 3 and 4 standards and work under tough operating conditions or with very long oilchange intervals. ACEA E6 is specially designed for heavy diesel engines with SCRs, particulate filtersor other exhaust gas cleaning systems, but can also benefit engines without any special exhaust gascleaning system.

E7: Very high-performance oil particularly in terms of cylinder polishing, wear and soot handling. The-se oils also give very clean pistons. Recommended for engines that meet Euro 1, 2, 3 and 4 standardsand work under tough operating conditions or with long oil change intervals. Suitable for engines wi-thout particulate filters, with or without EGR and/or SCR.

API service classes for transmission oilsThe most important function of the oil in a transmission system is to prevent wear to the generally hea-vily loaded gears in different types of drive train. The lubrication requirement increases from straight, conical and spiral-shaped gear trains to gears whose axes are in different planes (so-called ‘hypoidgears’). The API has divided these requirements into 5 different quality classes, API GL-1 to 5, ofwhich nos 2 and 3 are now obsolete.

GL-1Oils for conical worm gears, helical gears and manual gearboxes run at such low surface pressure thatpure mineral oils can be used. Oxidation and rust inhibitors, anti-foaming agents and minimal flow-re-ducing additives may be incorporated. On the other hand, friction-modifying and EP additives may notbe used.

GL-2Oil intended for e.g. helical gears. This class has been withdrawn.

GL-3Oil intended for e.g. helical gears. This class has been withdrawn.

GL-4Oil with a large quantity of EP additives, generally used in manual gearboxes.

GL-5Oil with a very large quantity of EP additives (roughly twice as much as GL-4). Used in heavily loadedgear boxes and hypoid gears. When choosing gearbox and differential oil, one should use oil corres-ponding to the recommended GL class. The use of GL-5 class oil in a gearbox for which API GL-4 isrecommended may cause the synchromesh to work more slowly.

ISO viscosity classesIn the ISO viscosity classification system for lubricating oils for industrial use (ISO 3448), the oils aredivided into 18 viscosity classes.

Each viscosity class is coded ISO VG (viscosity grade) and a number representing the viscosity inmm2/sec at 40 °C within a viscosity range with a +10 % variance.

4. GREASES

M0743-220000 GREASE 220

Technical basis

Defence Standard: FSD 8220

DescriptionThe grease consists of a high-viscosity mineral oil thickened with an anhydrous calcium soap. It istough and very adhesive, has very good water resistance and gives very good corrosion protection.

The high base oil viscosity in combination with EP additives gives good resistance to vibration stressesin sliding bearing structures and heavily loaded roller bearings at low to normal speeds. Because thecalcium soap is anhydrous, the grease can withstand higher temperatures than are normal for calcium-saponified greases. The grease is not suitable for fast-moving roller bearings or bearings that need torun freely.

Base oil viscosity at 40 °C: 1300 mm2/sec

Consistency: NLGI 2

Dropping point: min. 145 °C

Principal use• Heavily loaded sliding and roller bearings at normal speeds. Bearings under heavy shock and

vibration stresses. Bearings that need good adhesion

• Open gears.

• Applications exposed to water.

Technical basis

Defence Standard: FSD 8404Equivalent US spec: SAE J 1703, MVSS 116 (Dot 4)

NATO code: H 542

DescriptionBRAKE FLUID 430 is a completely normal brake fluid for motor vehicles, but with enhanced corro-sion protection. Normal retail products do not meet the Swedish Armed Forces’ requirements for corro-sion protection.

The brake fluid is a complex mixture of polyglycols and higher esters with additives against oxidationand corrosion. All brake fluids of this type have the ability to dissolve water, which reduces the boilingpoint and hence increases the risk of steam formation. It is therefore important to change the brake fluidat the specified intervals.

Principal useFor hydraulic braking systems in motor vehicles where this type of brake fluid is specified.

Technical basis

Equivalent US spec: ASTM D 910, Grade 100/130

Equivalent British spec: DEF STAN 91-90, AVGAS 100LL

NATO code: F-18

DescriptionAVGAS 33 is a petrol with an octane rating of 100 according to the engine method. It contains 0.053vol % lead tetraethyl as an octane enhancer. The petrol has Performance Number 130. This is a unit thatis only used for aviation petrol. The value 130 means that the power output of compressor-injected eng-ines can be increased by 30 % with a rich fuel-air mixture without causing knocking.

A major difference between aviation gasoline and normal petrol is that avgas lies within a narrower di-stillation interval and its initial boiling point is lower. On the other hand, it gives lower steam pressure, which reduces the risk of steam lock formation.

Principal useWithin the Swedish Armed Forces, the fuel is used only for unmanned aircraft. Other piston-enginedaircraft have been withdrawn.

11. GENERAL INFORMATION ON OILS

General information on the composition of lubricating oils, hydraulic oils and greasesLubricating oils mainly consist of a base oil (normally >80 %) and also contain additives in the form ofsubstances that improve certain properties. Three main types of base oils can be defined:

1. Mineral oils – refined petroleum oils,

2. Vegetable oils – refined plant oils, and

3. Synthetic oils – synthetically produced oils using petroleum or vegetable oils as raw materials.

The base oil is chosen on the basis of the intended use of the product/lubricating oil.Mineral oil is the most widely used base oil in lubricating oils.

Additives are used to improve the properties of the base oil for its intended use, e.g. to meet the requi-rements placed on the oil with respect to lubrication performance, change intervals, temperature rangeand corrosion protection.

The properties of the end-product are governed both by the base oil and the additives used.

The three main types of base oils and the usual types of additive are described below.

Mineral oilsThe most usual raw material for lubricating oil is petroleum, also known as crude oil. The crude oil isdistilled, which means that it is broken down into a number of fractions according to volatility. Distilla-te from fractions used for the manufacture of lubricating oil contains many chemical compounds. Besi-des saturated hydrocarbons it also contains aromatics, sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen and metalliccompounds. In order to produce a product that can be used as a base oil, the distillate is refined (puri-fied) by various methods. The final base oil consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with diffe-rent structures.

Vegetable oilsVegetable oils are obtained from oil-rich plants such as rapeseed. One area of use for vegetable oils ishydraulics in mobile equipment, as there may be a risk of leakage and spillage into water courses andland. The vegetable oils are relatively easily biodegradable, so they are more environmentally friendlythan similar mineral oil-based products. The main disadvantage of natural vegetable oils, made up ofesters, is that they are sensitive to water which can break the oil down relatively quickly; we say thatthey have poor hydrolytic stability, and they also have low oxidation stability. These drawbacks can beconsiderably reduced by chemical modification of the oil and by additives. The boundary between ve-getable oil and synthetic esters (see below) is therefore fluid.

Synthetic oilsSynthetic oils are a broad term; the only common denominator is that they are made by chemical pro-cesses. The group includes such different products as polyalphaolefins, polyolesters, phosphate esters, silicon oils, polyglycols etc. These oils have quite different properties and hence different applications. The term “synthetic oil” should therefore be used with caution; rather, one should specify the type ofoil that is meant.

PAOThe base oil in synthetic engine oil, intended for petrol and diesel engines for road vehicles, is produ-ced from so-called polyalphaolefins, or PAOs for short. PAOs can be used in most applications that re-quire a stable product. The finished base oil consists of synthetic hydrocarbons, with properties similarto normal mineral oil, and it can also be mixed with these. The difference is that all hydrocarbons inPAOs have basically the same structure, determined during manufacture, while mineral oil is a mixtureof hydrocarbons with an almost infinite number of variations.

FÖRSVARETS MATERIELVERK Product Catalogue, Fuels, Lubricants and Associa-ted Products for the Swedish Armed Forces

11. GENERAL INFORMATION ON OILS

PAOs as base oils are free from the impurities that may be present in mineral oil, such as polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which is an advantage from the health perspective.

Synthetic estersSynthetic ester oils are used as base oils in things like aero engine oils for jets. These ester oils may bediesters or polyolesters. Diesters are the older type, while polyolesters are most common today. A ma-jor advantage that polyolesters have over mineral oils is their stability at high temperatures. The disad-vantage of ester oils is that they attack many rubber materials and, like vegetable oils, can be brokendown by water.

A special category of esters are phosphate esters, which are even more aggressive to rubber, and also tosome plastics and paints. The advantage of phosphate esters is that they are less flammable than “nor-mal” esters and mineral oils. The most important application for phosphate esters is as hydraulic oil incivil aircraft, where mineral oil or polyolesters would pose too great a risk of fire in the event of acrash.

PolyglycolsPolyglycols are a third group of synthetic oils, used in things like brake fluid. They can dissolve a cer-tain quantity of water, which is an advantage in some situations.

AdditivesAdditives can improve the properties of the base oil and introduce quite new properties. Many of theadditives are metal-organic additives containing elements like zinc, phosphorus, sulphur and calcium.Other additives may be purely organic, such as polymetacrylate, a polymer used as a viscosity indeximprover in hydraulic oil. This is the only additive used in very high doses, sometimes as high as 10–20 %.

More detailed information about additives and their health risks can be found in TO AF ALLM 900012507 Oils.

11. GENERAL INFORMATION ON OILS

Breakdown into application areasA simple breakdown into application areas could be as follows: aero engine oil, transmission oil andhydraulic oil. There are also specific application areas that do not fit into these three categories, such asshaft oil, instrument oil, saw chain oil and vacuum oil.

Engine oilEngine oil in vehicles, ships and aircraft with piston engines (i.e. diesel and petrol-powered Otto engin-es) operates in a very tough environment. The temperature is high and the oil comes in contact withcombustion gases and soot particles. The oil’s function is to cool, lubricate and clean the engine. To ful-fil these functions in the tough environment, the engine oil contains many additives.

Engine oil can be made from mineral oil, semi-synthetic or synthetic oil. The base oil in synthetic oil,PAO, dissolves additives rather poorly. To make the solubility better, synthetic ester oil can be added tosynthetic oil. Semi-synthetic engine oils are mixture of mineral oil and PAO.

In certain applications engine oil is also used in transmissions.

Aviation Turbine OilAviation Turbo Oil used in jet engines must be resistant to very high temperatures with peaks up to 300°C. The oil becomes hot as a small amount of oil is to lubricate a hot engine with high output. The oilmust maintain a lubricating film despite very high loads. On the other hand, there are no exhaust gasesto deal with, and the oil stays clean in the system.

Aviation Turbo Oil for turbine engines is made of synthetic diesters and polyolesters with additives toimprove oxidation properties, provide corrosion protection and improve the lubricity.

Aero engine oil can be broken down by hydrolysis and by oxidation. Separation by hydrolysis can oc-cur where water is present. Oxidised or hydrolysed oil may smell bad.

Transmission oilTransmission oil includes e.g. gearbox oil, hypoid oil and ATF oil (for automatic transmission fluid). The main task of the transmission oil is to reduce friction and lubricate the sliding surfaces betweengears in manual gearboxes, angle gears, rear axles, hypoid gears and similar applications. As the namesuggests, ATF oil is intended for automatic gearboxes, which place special requirements on the viscosi-ty and friction properties of the oil.

Generally, mineral oil or PAOs are used as base oils, but synthetic esters are also found.

Transmission oil contains additives, mainly to lubricate the gears. Hypoid gears place extreme demandson the lubrication performance of the oil, so hypoid oil contains special EP additives to handlelubrication.

Hydraulic oilHydraulic oil, i.e. oil used to transfer forces in hydraulic systems, is not always classed as a lubricatingoil, because its main function is not lubrication. A mineral oil with a small quantity of additives is ge-nerally used as hydraulic oil. It has become more usual to use vegetable base oils, particularly for envi-ronmental reasons.

GreaseIn some situations, the lubricating oil has to be soft or firm for e.g. ball-bearings and sliding bearings.A grease may be described as a thickened oil. The thickener (gel former) acts as a sponge that absorbssmall amounts of the grease when it is compressed. In most cases, the gel former is a metallic soap.Apart from oil and thickeners, various additives are needed, depending on the intended use of thegrease.

11. GENERAL INFORMATION ON OILS

Cutting fluid, anti-corrosion agentsThe main purpose of cutting fluid/oil is to cool, lubricate and remove shavings created when cuttingmetal. They can be divided into those that can be mixed with water and those that cannot. The firstgroup contain tensides and often bactericides.

Anti-corrosion agents are used to prevent or reduce corrosion of metals caused by water and oxygen.Their primary function is to form a protective film. Anti-corrosion agents contain additives in the formof water-repelling agents and oxidation and rust inhibitors.

12. ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH RISKS

The safety datasheets for products which are procured/stocked by FMV FSV Resmat are available inPRIO.

Health risks and exposureWorking with oils may carry the risk of exposure via skin contact, inhalation, contact with the eyes andingestion. No oil product may be regarded as completely harmless to health. The degree of health ha-zard depends on the base oil used, how pure the product is, and what additives there are in it. The met-hod of handling may also have a bearing on the health risks. Generally speaking, the health risks fromhandling an oil product increase with the scale of use.

Skin contactFor all types of oil, prolonged and repeated skin contact may have a degreasing effect, which may cau-se irritation and possibly eczema. Prolonged and repeated skin contact may also cause inflammation ofthe hair follicles and sebaceous glands – so-called oil spots. These are usually localised in places whereoil-soaked clothing rubs against the skin, such as the front of the thighs and the forearms.

In some products allergenic components are included in low concentrations e.g. certain resin acids andcertain additives are added which may cause allergic eczema. (Resin acids may be present in vegetableoils.) These are labelled “May cause an allergic reaction” (or similar), but they carry no hazard symbol. The products are not considered a health risk with correct handling and proper use on condition thatprolonged skin contact is avoided and that the person handling the product has not been extra sensitiveof the allergenic component previously. In the case of splashing or direct contact, the skin should bewashed and contaminated clothes changed. (A person who is hypersensitive to allergenic substancesmay get an allergic reaction even if the substance has a very low concentration in the product and thecombined product is not classified as allergenic.)

Low-refined mineral oils may contain so-called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group ofsubstances with carcinogenic properties. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can also form when mineraloil is used, especially if the oil is exposed to high temperatures.

Oils of the PAO type, other synthetic oils and vegetable oils do not contain PAH.

Highly-refined mineral oils are almost free from PAHs and are not considered to pose any risk of carci-nogenic effects. The suppliers’ safety datasheets for mineral oil-based products now almost always sta-te that the oil contained in them is highly-refined. (The text “PCA-content<3 % acc. IP346” or “<3 %DMSO-extract measured acc. to IP346” is also stated frequently. This information gives the PAH con-tent and it means that the oil is not classified as carcinogenic.

Hydraulic oil lines are often under high pressure, which carries an increased risk of leaks and exposureto oil. A small hole in a hydraulic oil line can produce a fine jet coming out at great speed. This jet cancause injury and wounds that are slow to heal. Oil that has penetrated under the skin at high pressurecan cause extensive tissue damage to the dermis.

InhalationInhalation of oil in the form of vapour, fumes or mist causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Pain inthe nose and throat, coughing and hoarseness may also be brought on by inhalation. High concentra-tions and prolonged inhalation can cause inflammation of the trachea and complaints resemblingpneumonia.

Page 203: M7789-000193 - FMV

FÖRSVARETS MATERIELVERK Product Catalogue, Fuels, Lubricants and Associa-ted Products for the Swedish Armed Forces

12. ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH RISKS

Eye contactHigh concentrations of oil in the form of vapour or mist, and direct splashing of oil, can irritate theeyes.

IngestionSwallowing a small amount of oil doe not usually carry an acute risk of poisoning. If a free-flowing(low-viscosity) oil is ingested, there is a risk of chemical pneumonia if the oil is drawn down into thelungs (aspiration). The risk increases if the person vomits after ingestion. Symptoms can appear withinan hour or up to a day after ingestion.

Additives – health risksThe chemical additives used ore of various types and also carry varying health risks.

Often the additives are present in very small amounts which means that even if the substance itself cancause serious health risks, the product (lubricating oil) may not be regarded as hazardous to health.

Apart from the fact that an individual additive may carry a health risk by itself, additives are also sus-pected of producing synergistic (combined) effects, either with the base oil or with other additive con-tained in the product. Chemical additives that contribute to the hazardous character of a product mustbe indicated in the safety datasheet and by labelling the product.

More detailed information about additives and their health risks can be found in TO AF ALLM 900012507 Oils.

Environmental risksSome oils are dangerous to the environment. They can for example be harmful to aquatic organismsand they can cause long-term damage in the aquatic environment.

In nature, the degradation rate (the speed of decomposition) for the base oils in lubricants is in generallow, but they are all potentially degradable. In aquatic environments, vegetable base oils and somesynthetic esters degrade faster compared to other base oils.

Lubricants are not easily soluble in water and they frequently float on the water. The oil layer can causephysical damage to organisms and it has a negative effect on the oxygen transport between air/waterand air/ground. Fish are affected as the water's oxygenation is affected by the oil film and also as theoil can get stuck to the mucous membranes in their gills. Components in mineral oil can give smell andtaste to the water even at low concentrations (down to a few ppm).

After spillage on the ground, lubricants are usually absorbed strongly to the soil.

In general, lubricant additives are not easily degradable in nature and they can be expected to be absor-bed into organic materials.

Used oilsLubricants are complex mixtures and they can also change during use. Base oils and additives canchange by both external and internal factors, and various impurities may be added to the lubricating oilas it is used. The health hazard (possible health risks from the products) generally increases with use.

When oils are used, there is degradation, usually in the form of oxidation. At increased temperature(which is common), degradation is faster. Degradation can cause hazardous substances to be formed.

12. ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH RISKS

Metals, gases of combustion, carbonization and fuel are contaminations the oil can absorb when used.PAH levels (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) may be high in used engine oils. PAH levels may alsoincrease in other types of oil during use, but not to the same extent as in engine oil. Some polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons are carcinogenic.

Safety measuresWorkplaces and working methods should be designed so as to avoid direct contact with oil and greaseand inhalation of any vapour/mist/fumes.

Where there is a risk of splashing, protective glasses or face protection should be worn. Safety glovesshould be used in the case of repeated skin contact.

The risk of damage to the skin decreases with good personal hygiene. There must be facilities to washthe hands, particularly before meals, visits to the lavatory and smoking breaks. By using a softeninghand cream, one can replace the natural oils in the skin which are washed away, significantly reducingthe risk of dry and cracked skin.

It should also be possible to shower before changing into street clothes. Work clothes should be washedregularly.

Work should be carried out in well-ventilated spaces. Work should be planned so as to prevent inhala-tion of oil or products of decomposition. There is a hygienic limit for oil mist and fumes. There are alsospecific limits for many individual substances that may be present in oil or formed by degradation. Theventilation of the premises may need to be supplemented by ducting and/or point extractors to preventthe level of impurities in the air from becoming too high, particularly if oils are handled in such a waythat mist/aerosols are formed.

Personal protective equipmentWhen selecting personal protective equipment, the information contained in the supplier's safety datas-heets must be followed (section 8 in the safety datasheet).

If there is no information about recommended protective equipment in the safety datasheet for a speci-fic product, refer to tables 1-4 in TO AF ALLM 900 012507 Oils. The tables contain information onthe personal protective equipment that is often recommended in the safety datasheets for the specifiedtypes of products.

For more information about the choice of personal protective equipment and for information about al-ternative protective equipment, refer to the TO below.

• Guidelines for selecting protective gloves AFALLM 900 010929.

• Guidelines for selecting and using respiratory protection AFALLM 900 012506.

• Guidelines for selecting and using goggles and protective clothing AFALLM 900 015826.

In workplaces where large amounts of oil are handled in the open every day, or where the oil beinghandled may carry particular risks, written safety and handling instructions may be needed. Examplesare used engine oil with high PAH levels or oils with high concentrations of bactericides.

Any skin problems or irritation of the respiratory tract that may be attributable to exposure to oil shouldbe reported to the employer. If an oil causes problems for many employees, it may make sense to chan-ge to a different one.
