MAAC annual meeting, Halifax, April 23rd

Annual meeting report by Carl LaydenPhotos by Al Eastman

During this past week the MAAC executive, board & AGM meetings were held in Halifax, I audited the BOD meetings and attended the AGM. I wanted to share my view of what happened

around the table and at the AGM.

The level of professionalism has increased significantly. Everyone around the table listened to the different opinions, contributed openly and honestly. This group is very passionate about MAAC and modelling they kept emotions in check, speaking articulately to the issues using

facts and examples. No blood was shed; no one stormed out of the meeting in frustration or anger. A group around a table, working together for everyone, there wasn’t any “we/they”

discussion, just working for all MAAC. There is mutual respect for all disciplines, members and each other.

There has been an increase of approximately 300 new members since the announcement of the TC regs. A few new clubs have formed and several flying sites have been sanctioned. It is

important to note you can have your flying site hidden from public view on the MAAC website.

This was my 18th AGM, it was the first time I have seen the board and audience act in unison on each by-law change & resolution (one minor point, there was one abstention on the budget as

the individual felt to be in conflict). Each motion/resolution was clearly explained by MAAC Constitutional Chair Keith Bennett, he explained the board’s position on each issue. A job very

well done.

The new Executive:

President Craig Ekstrand, Vice Pres Peter Schaffer, Sec/Treas Linda Patrick, M at L Kevin McGrath, Frank Klenk & Roly Worsfold.

MAAC provides many services for all members including; RC aviators, competitors, sport flyers, space modelers, control-line, free-flight, indoor, ground & water based vehicles, helicopters, multicopters, etc. The website offers services for renewal event registration etc. and many documented resources. Many people may not realize the formal relationship with Transport

Canada started several years ago in 2001. Working with the RABC MAAC received acceptance from Industry Canada to use 2.4GHz in 2004. Government involvement is not new, it is perhaps

more important today than it was in the past.

The board has a plan and a vision; I’m 100% confident in their ability to lead and provide services, resources to the membership. This is a great group guiding our association; I look

forward to the future.

MAAC annual meeting, Halifax, April 23rd

The biggest issue was Transport Canada and the new regulations regarding operation of drones/UAVs etc. There are some MAAC members concerned that the new regulations are restrictive preventing them

from flying at their cottage (cabin), or in a field they own or at a friend’s field, etc. That question was raised on the floor of the AGM. Outgoing MAAC president Rodger Williams answered the question

offering 4 possible alternatives, choose the option that suits your situation;

1. Form a club – Requires 3 MAAC members to fill out the appropriate paperwork.

2. You could work with an existing club to have the site added to an existing club.

3. Sanction the event, i.e. fill out the paperwork (submissions can be done online.)

4. Follow the TC regulations.

MAAC member Jim Ewing, owner of Great Hobbies address the executive with a few of his concerns.

VALLEY GATHERING 2017

For the Wings of Wellington members and those that fly indoors with us, the Valley Gathering marks the end of our

indoor season. Our 7th annual Gathering was great success with a

higher pilot and spectator participation than last year. With the support of

Great Hobbies, RC Wings and Wheels, Maritime Hobbies and Crafts, Mighty

Small Cars, and MAAC we were pleased to have more than $1000 of

prizes on hand this year. The sale of a lifelong modellers estate created a

buying spree first thing in the morning which made for lots of open air

available until the rush died down. I know many came away with some

great deals on kits and accessories. The club would like to thank all those who participated and particularly all

our volunteers who work hard behind the seens and during the event to

make it a fun day for all.

Vic Rusgy’s 1/16th Scale Sopwith Triplane build I have recently completed a new

and not overly-modelled addition to my fleet of scale WWI aircraft for

indoor flying. It is a 20 inch wingspan model of the very

successful, but not well-known product from the Sopwith factory of

Great Britain – the Triplane, or “Tripe” or Tripehound”, as it was often called. The Tripe is actually

the aircraft that, due to its outstanding performance, spawned

the German desire to have a triplane of their own, which

resulted in the development of the Fokker Dr.1.

My model, like the rest of my indoor aircraft, is my own design and is

constructed from scratch, primarily from dollar store Adam’s

foamboard with the paper peeled off. It is powered by a tiny 5 gram

out-runner motor and a 260 mAh, 2-cell lipo battery, and the all up

weight of the aircraft comes in at a whopping 3.8 oz. The dimensions

of the model are nearly exactly scale with the exception of the fin

and rudder, which have been increased slightly in area to

improve the flight characteristics. The wings have slightly greater than scale dihedral in order to permit just 3-channel control – throttle, rudder and elevator.

The electronics for this model (motor, ESC, receiver, battery and servos) are contained in what I’ve

called the “power-pod”. It is a self-contained electronics package mounted in a removable, light plywood frame that allows the entire unit to be removed and

installed very quickly into another airframe with just two screws plus the connectors for the elevator and

rudder control rods.

Vic Rusgy’s 1/16th Scale Sopwith Triplane build The wings are under-cambered to give them a scale-like airfoil shape by the simple process of rolling the wing panels over a cardboard tube

until they retain the desired curvature. The cowling was made from the bottom of a plastic dollar store squirt bottle which had the perfect shape and diameter. The pilot was carved from a chuck of blue foam and the twin Vickers

guns were cobbled together from bits of drinking straws and scrap

balsa wood.

Acrylic craft paints applied by brush were used to emulate the

original finish. I enlisted the talents of my girlfriend, Mary, to hand paint the roundels and other details such as the “Black Maria” fuselage side

markings and tail numbers depicting the mount of Canadian

ace, Raymond Collishaw.

I had the opportunity to conduct the maiden flight of my triplane at

the recent Valley Gathering in Kentville. I’m happy to report the

flight was a success and the aircraft flew nicely, although I will need to dial in a little more down-

thrust on the motor as it had a tendency to climb when power was

applied.

All in all, I'm pleased with the result and I have to say there is

something special about watching a three-winged classic cruise

through the air!

The Valley Sport and Multipurpose Facility has recognized our

significant involvement and use of their facility with a new Logo which now includes a model airplane. We were very pleased and surprised to see this. I expect regular flyers may be wearing shirts and jackets with

the Logo in the future.

The 6 month indoor season has wrapped up for the 2016/17 season but we are already looking forward

to next year!

Sabrina has been a regular helper and

participant at Wings of Wellington events for the

past 7 years. Many will know her from our event

registration booths at different events. We may not be seeing as much of her in the future as she

embarks on her continuing education journey at Dalhousie University in the fall.

Thanks so much Sabrina for all you have

contributed to the club!!! The Photo is of Sabrina and Club president Don

dealing with the necessary side of the

business of renting the multipurpose facility.

Last building update for this year. Yup, it's official, Spring has sprung and with that, my spitfire build has ground to a halt. Progress has been very slow, mostly due to waiting for parts ( try 2 mths for one order). Anyway, ailerons and flaps are functional but not permanently attached, that will come after covering is applied.

Landing gear is permanently installed and operates nicely. I did make a slight error on LG leg length and had to re-order longer ones, with the required visit to Pats for a little machine work. Did some preliminary radio programming set up and am quite pleased with the new Turnigy TG-i0 Tx. Other than the Chinese to English translation in the manual, the radio appears to be a great deal........ time

will tell. So, until next year, have a great summer and get lots of flying in!

NOTE: I am opting for a simpler layout for the list of upcoming zone events this year due to the amount of resources needed to place them in the newsletter. While the layout last

season looked much nicer with accompanying photos, it put some demand on the physical size of the newsletter and a couple of times last year it meant delivery problems by email

as the file size exceeded some members email mailboxes. I prefer saving this space to devote to photos and text in reports from the various clubs.

The 2017 Annual General Meeting in Halifax is already a thing of the past and it was very successful and also very pleased with the general attendance of at least

twenty five members from the four provinces of the Atlantic Zone considering the great distances to travel.

In this news letter you will see Carl Layden’s resume of the Annual General Meeting which describes it very well as to what went on during the meetings this past

week end which actually went on very smoothly. Besides Carl Layden being a past president Colin Campbell was in

attendance also. Thank you to Sandy McInnis for taking care of

transportation to and from the airport with help from Glenn Miller and Chris Dean, job well done, thank you.

See you at a flying field Regis Landry

My high school assignment was to ask a veteran about World War II. Since my father had served in the Philippines during the war, I chose him.

After a few basic questions, I very gingerly asked, “Did you ever kill anyone?”

Dad got quiet. Then, in a soft voice, he said, “Probably. I was the cook.”

Bill’s second Anniversary was coming up and if there was one thing that got his wife Suzy upset, it was not getting a thoughtful gift on a special

occasion. Bill quizzed all his friends, co workers, clients and anyone he happened to bump into,

as to what would be a good anniversary present. He finally settled on a huge bouquet of flowers. Not willing to trust himself to pick out the right flowers, Bill called up a local flower shop with strict instructions to deliver the biggest most beautiful bouquet of flowers first thing in the

morning with the following note “Happy Anniversary Year Number Two!” The morning of the Anniversary Bill made sure Suzy would be

the one to answer the door as he waited anxiously in the other room. “WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT?!” Hollered Suzie angrily holding up his well thought out note, “Happy

Anniversary You’re Number Two!”
